Genetic mutations in >50 genes, including RSPH4A, can lead to primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). RSPH4A mutations affect radial spokes, which alter the configuration of the ciliary ultrastructure and lead to chronic oto-sinopulmonary disease. The RSPH4A [c.921+3_6delAAGT] founder mutation was described as one cause of PCD without laterality defects in Puerto Rico. The average Puerto Rican genetic composition includes 64% European, 21% African ancestral, and 15% Native-American or Taino, a native tribe in the Caribbean at the start of the European colonization, genes. Due to the relatively elevated Taino ancestry on the island, it might have contributed to the endemicity of …

Methylmercury concentrations vary widely across geographic space and among habitat types, with marine and aquatic-feeding organisms typically exhibiting higher mercury concentrations than terrestrial-feeding organisms. However, there are few model organisms to directly compare mercury concentrations as a result of foraging in marine, estuarine, or terrestrial food webs. The ecological impacts of differential foraging may be especially important for generalist species that exhibit high plasticity in foraging habitats, locations, or diet. Here, we investigate whether foraging habitat, sex, or fidelity to a foraging area impact blood mercury concentrations in western gulls (Larus occidentalis) from three colonies on the US west coast. …

Delirium In Frail Older Adults, Min Ji Kwak
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Delirium and frailty are prevalent geriatric syndromes and important public health issues among older adults. The prevalence of delirium among hospitalized older adults ranges from 15% to 75%, while that of frailty ranges from 12% to 24%. The exact pathophysiology of these two conditions has not been clearly identified, although several hypotheses have been proposed. However, these conditions are considered to be multifactorial in etiology and are associated with inflammation related to aging, alterations in vascular systems, genetics, and nutritional deficiency. Furthermore, clinically, they are significantly associated with frailty, which increases the risk of delirium by almost two- to three-fold …

The Interaction Of Global Motion And Global Form Processing On The Perception Of Implied Motion: An Equivalent Noise Approach, Mahesh R. Joshi, Anita J. Simmers, Seong T. Jeon
School of Health Professions
Global motion and global form are proposed to be processed through functionally differentiated independent channels along dorsal (motion) and ventral (form) pathways. However, more recent studies show significant interactions between these pathways by inducing the perception of motion (implied motion) from presenting the independent frames of static Glass patterns. The mechanisms behind such interaction are not adequately understood with studies showing a larger contribution of either a motion or form processing mechanism. In the current study, we adapted the equivalent noise paradigm to disentangle the effect of internal noise (local processing) and sampling efficiency (global processing) on global motion, global …

We explore how digital technologies are helping address grand challenges to tackle climate change and promote sustainable development. With digital technologies, entrepreneurial organizations have adopted innovative approaches to tackle seemingly intractable societal challenges. We refer to these broadly as digital sustainability activities. By focusing on the digital toolbox employed by pioneering organizations, we propose a research agenda that generates novel questions for entrepreneurship, business models, and ecosystems as well as new ways of thinking about trust and institutional logics. We believe that digital sustainability can spur empirical advances in entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategy with potential for positive impact on society.

A number of neuroimaging techniques have been employed to understand how visual information is transformed along the visual pathway. Although each technique has spatial and temporal limitations, they can each provide important insights into the visual code. While the BOLD signal of fMRI can be quite informative, the visual code is not static and this can be obscured by fMRI’s poor temporal resolution. In this study, we leveraged the high temporal resolution of EEG to develop an encoding technique based on the distribution of responses generated by a population of real-world scenes. This approach maps neural signals to each pixel …

A Review Of Fixed Drug Eruption With A Special Focus On Generalized Bullous Fixed Drug Eruption., Hannah J. Anderson, Jason B. Lee, Md
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Fixed drug eruption (FDE) is a cutaneous adverse drug reaction characterized by the onset of rash at a fixed location on the body each time a specific medication is ingested. With each recurrence, the eruption can involve additional sites. Lesions can have overlying vesicles and/or bullae, and when they cover a significant percentage of body surface area, the eruption is referred to as generalized bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE). Due to the widespread skin denudation that can be seen in this condition, GBFDE may be confused clinically with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN). While treatments described for GBFDE include supportive …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The obesity rate in the U.S. adult population has increased to epidemic levels despite attempts to decrease obesity through evidence-based knowledge, clinical practice guidelines, medical interventions, and individual efforts. For certain individuals, food addiction behaviors such as food cravings, loss of control, and binge eating contribute to obesity and require a different approach to care. Little work has been done on adding the possibility of food addiction to obesity screening and treatment. This study utilized a quasi-experimental quantitative pre- and postsurvey research design based on Lewin’s change theory. Nurse practitioners were surveyed regarding the provider’s perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs about …

Background: Little is known about what distinguishes those who are resilient after trauma from those at risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous work indicates white matter integrity may be a useful biomarker in predicting PTSD. Research has shown changes in the integrity of three white matter tracts—the cingulum bundle, corpus callosum (CC), and uncinate fasciculus (UNC)—in the aftermath of trauma relate to PTSD symptoms. However, few have examined the predictive utility of white matter integrity in the acute aftermath of trauma to predict prospective PTSD symptom severity in a mixed traumatic injury sample.
Method: Thus, the current study …

Abstract
Youth at risk for negative health outcomes due to reduced access to social, mental health, and educational support systems are in particular need of resources promoting social-emotional resilience and positive educational outcomes. A growing body of research documents the positive benefits of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), but few studies have examined the impact of MBIs for at-risk adolescents, particularly in school settings where barriers to access can be minimized. This pilot feasibility study examined the effects of a nine-week school-based MBI, augmented by cross-course curricular material, in a group of high school students attending a transfer school, designed to re-engage …

Federal and state initiatives designed to improve schools have created unintended, negative consequences. Educational research studies link these initiatives to declines in teacher job satisfaction, decreased teacher retention, and the potential development of adversarial relationships between teachers and administrators (Darling-Hammond, 2010). The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the FranklinCovey Leader in Me Program’s effect at an identified, Title I school in Georgia that implemented the program as a means of school reform and improvement. Data were obtained through observations, document analysis, and interviews. A constructivist epistemology was used to synthesize collected data to create meaning. …
