Constructing Bicultural Identity And Shame Resilience In Chinese* Americans, Natalie Wei-Mun Hsieh
Constructing Bicultural Identity And Shame Resilience In Chinese* Americans, Natalie Wei-Mun Hsieh
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Mental health and family therapy professionals must respond to the resurgence of race-based trauma experienced by Asian Americans during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic (Cheah et al., 2020). Yet Asian Americans are the lowest helpseeking group for mental health needs (NAMI, n.d.), often due to shame (Masuda & Boone, 2011). Dominant theories of shame resilience (Brown, 2006; Van Vliet, 2008) assume Western norms of an autonomous self, missing important aspects of Asian American collectivist, bicultural, and minority understandings of self, and the salience of interpersonal shame (Wong & Tsai, 2007; Shih et al., 2019; Yeh & Hwang, 2000). Bicultural …
The Effects And Mechanisms Of Phytochemicals On Alzheimer’S Disease Neuropathology, David Ross
The Effects And Mechanisms Of Phytochemicals On Alzheimer’S Disease Neuropathology, David Ross
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Alzheimer’s disease effects millions of people, yet pharmacological treatments are limited. In the absence of effective treatments, identifying factors that can decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is of significant interest. A growing body of epidemiological and experimental evidence suggests that dietary fruits and vegetables can have neuroprotective effects against the harmful effects of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and aging. These effects are mediated by various phytochemicals, which are compounds found in plants that can possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other beneficial properties. This review addresses epidemiological and experimental evidence for the effects and potential mechanisms of several commonly consumed phytochemicals …
The Association Between Stigma And Violence Among Individuals With Schizophrenia, Christopher Law
The Association Between Stigma And Violence Among Individuals With Schizophrenia, Christopher Law
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder characterized by positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms. Individuals with schizophrenia (IWS) are often stigmatized and portrayed as dangerous. While the majority of IWS are not dangerous or violent, this image of the dangerous IWS is still pervasive across different cultures. Apart from the individuals who have exhibited antisocial traits prior to the onset of their psychosis, medication can significantly reduce the risk for aggressive and violent behaviors among IWS. However, as the literature reveals, medication noncompliance has become an significant issue among IWS. Studies show that stigmatization of schizophrenia has significantly contributed to individuals not …

Stage Two Outpatient Adolescent Recovery Program, Kaylin Miller
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Non-suicidal self-harm is a broad term used to describe the intentional injury to oneself. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment, originally developed for adults with Borderline Personality Disorder, that has been adapted for use with adolescents to treat self-harm and suicidal ideation (DBT-A). Stage one of DBT, which focuses on teaching skills to replace self-harm behaviors and reduce suicidal ideation, has been researched extensively. However, there is limited research on stage two of DBT, which focuses on treating the underlying psychological causes that lead to self-harm. Loma Linda University’s Behavioral Medicine Center offers intensive outpatient DBT stage one …
Inflammation In Older Adults: Stress, Depression, And Aces, Kerianne Kramer
Inflammation In Older Adults: Stress, Depression, And Aces, Kerianne Kramer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Studies conducted on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have shown that childhood adversity is relatively common, likely to co-occur, and have dose-dependent relationships with mental and physical health in adulthood. People with a history of ACEs are likely to experience dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to increased inflammation production, greater stress reactivity, and decreased serotonin production. This longitudinal study explored the role depression and perceived stress have in the relationship between ACEs and inflammation while controlling for demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity, education, difficulty meeting expenses). The study sample included 288 (61% female, 66% white, Mage = 68, …

Estimating The Value Of Disease Regulation Services Under Climate Change: A Bioeconomic Model Of Coffee Leaf Rust And Shade-Grown Coffee, Khashayar Ghorbani
Master's Theses and Capstones
Coffee is the most valuable agricultural product in international trade. It is projected to face a decrease in production by as much as 50% by 2050, mainly due to rising temperature, changes in rainfall patterns, deforestation, and the spread of fungal pathogens and pests. Among the biological threats to coffee, the Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR) has the most destructive economic impact all around the world. The most recent widespread outbreak resulted in a 16% harvest loss in Central America and a 31% loss in Colombia during the 2012-2013 season, and a record of 50% loss was reported in Costa Rica …
Biogeochemical Stressors And Ecological Response In Great Bay Estuary, Nh/Me, Anna Lowien
Biogeochemical Stressors And Ecological Response In Great Bay Estuary, Nh/Me, Anna Lowien
Master's Theses and Capstones
Estuaries are threatened by eutrophication due to increasing anthropogenic nutrient loading from surrounding coastal watersheds. The Great Bay Estuary, NH/ME, has been designated as nitrogen impaired primarily due to a 44% loss in eelgrass coverage since 1996. Since 2014, wastewater treatment plants in the watershed have begun upgrading to reduce nitrogen loads to Great Bay. This region has also experienced changes in climate, with multiple, consecutive years of low annual precipitation totals. The loss of eelgrass, increased variability in precipitation, and continued anthropogenic land-use influence on the region have biogeochemical consequences for Great Bay. Solute budgets for a portion of …

Striped Bass Population Genetic Structure And Bait Panel Development For Mixed Stock Analysis, Kristopher Wojtusik
Master's Theses and Capstones
The delineation of genetic stock structure and population connectivity are key components in the effective management of exploited fishes, and in preserving the biocomplexity of populations which is critical for maintaining a species resilience to environmental and anthropogenic pressures. The information gained from identifying the genetic structure among populations is important for ensuring that the spatial scale of management makes biological sense, for identifying genetically compatible individuals to be used in stocking and supplementation efforts, and for use in population assignment methods. This body of research focuses on delineating the genetic stock structure of Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) and building …

Forests, and the vertebrate species within them, are irreplaceable sources of food and nutrition for millions of people living in areas of high biodiversity. Unfortunately, many of these forests are being cleared for agriculture, and many animals are threatened with extinction from unsustainable hunting. Forest clearing and the hunting of threatened species are untenable solutions to long-term food insecurity and adequate nutrition, jeopardizing these species' survival, the healthy functioning of ecosystems, and the cultural identities of local people. Working with communities to develop culturally appropriate ways for people to obtain sustainable and legal sources of food from forests outside of …

Gender Differences In The Clinical Presentation Of Borderline Personality Disorder: A Review, Kimberly Glover
Gender Differences In The Clinical Presentation Of Borderline Personality Disorder: A Review, Kimberly Glover
Dissertations
Borderline personality disorder is diagnosed in women three times more than men and represents a significant gender disparity amid considerable stigmatization compared to other psychological disorders. Empirical studies have investigated the gender prevalence for borderline personality disorder and further determined that findings may be due to differences in how borderline personality disorder clinically manifests in men and women. Common areas of investigation have included developmental features, diagnostic symptomology, psychiatric comorbidities, and the level of functional impairment for individuals with borderline personality disorder. An analysis of existing data was indicative of shortcomings in methods that include small samples of men, a …

Ovarian Cancer (OC) is the most lethal female malignancy worldwide, mainly due to its high recurrence rate and poor diagnosis. Most patients present with late stage of the disease, and less than 25% of patients survive the five years mark. Nanotherapy provides significant and unique benefits for drug efficacy, as nanoparticles (NPs) can increase the solubility, bioavailability, and permeability of many potent drugs. Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is one of the most successful biodegradable polymers used in NPs formulations, mainly due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is one of the most commonly used moieties to prolong the NPs …
Conformation Of The Protein-Free Spliceosomal U2-U6 Snrna Complex And Remodeling By Mg2+ And Proteins, Huong Chu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Splicing of precursor messenger RNA is an essential process in eukaryotes in which the non-coding regions (introns) are removed and coding regions (exons) ligated together to form a mature mRNA. This process is catalyzed by a multi-mega Dalton ribonucleoprotein complex called the spliceosome, which is assembled from five small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNP) in the form of RNA-protein complexes (U1, U2, U4, U5 and U6) and hundreds of proteins. U2 and U6 small nuclear (sn)RNAs are the only snRNAs directly implicated in catalyzing the splicing of pre-mRNA, but assembly and rearrangement steps prior to catalysis require numerous proteins. Previous studies have …

Bioactive venom peptides are increasingly being explored as drug leads in pharmaceutical research because of their immense therapeutic potential, however there is a need to more efficiently screen and characterize these peptides to discover medicinal leads more quickly.1,2 The Holford lab has leveraged recent technological achievements in genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to produce a leap in the discovery of venom peptides from previously hard to characterize small and neglected venomous animals such as Terebridae, an understudied lineage of the Conoidea Superfamily.4, 5–7 With the rise of -omic technologies the floodgates have opened and venom researchers are awash with large datasets …
Training And Individual Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Serious Mental Illness Amongst Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students, Lauren K. O'Connor
Training And Individual Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Serious Mental Illness Amongst Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students, Lauren K. O'Connor
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Clinical psychologists are grossly underrepresented in treatment provision for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI; Roe, Yanos, Lysaker, 2006). Systemic (e.g., emergence of managed care) and training-based (e.g., limitations to SMI specific training) factors contribute to the establishment of this underrepresentation, while mental health stigma amongst psychologists may play a role in perpetuating it. Many individual and experiential factors have been found to impact clinicians’ attitudes toward those with SMI (Henderson et al., 2014; Schulzes, 2007). Though many of these factors are present and relevant from the beginning of one’s career and may involve elements related to training, little research …
Food Restriction And Body Image Distortion In Pregnant Mothers: Outcomes For Exposed Children, Kathryn M. Dana
Food Restriction And Body Image Distortion In Pregnant Mothers: Outcomes For Exposed Children, Kathryn M. Dana
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: Developmental trajectories in the growing child do not originate at birth. Rather, critical periods may exist in pregnancy, during which the determinants of malnutrition are especially vulnerable to the effects of stress and other complications. Prenatal malnutrition has been consistently associated with negative consequences for the growth, development, and overall physical and mental health of affected offspring in both human and animal models. While most available literature on human prenatal malnutrition comes from famine research, there is some evidence that restrictive eating disorders in pregnant women may be associated with similar outcomes.
Hypotheses: We hypothesize that prenatal exposure to …

Dual Control Of One Component Signaling: Mechanistic And Structural Insights Into El222 Active States, Uthama Phani R. Edupuganti
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Photoreceptors play a crucial role in signal transduction as specialized proteins which sense light as environmental stimuli and transduce the signal to control of downstream functions. Here we focus our attention on one class of these proteins, the Light-Oxygen-Voltage (LOV) domain, which is sensitive to blue light via an internally-bound flavin chromophore. Since their initial discovery in plant phototropins, many details of their photochemistry, chromophore interactions, and use with a diverse set of functional effectors have been described. However, several key details, especially a comprehensive understanding of signaling mechanism and its regulation, still remain elusive due in part to the …

Three Lc-Ms Plant Metabolomics Studies Of Hop (Humulus) Species: Wild H. Neomexicanus, Drought Stress, And Agricultural Terroir, Taylan Morcol
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The hop plant (Humulus L., Cannabaceae) is a dioecious, perennial, twining vine with a long history of human use. Nowadays, hop plants are generally grown for their inflorescences (“cones”), which are used in brewing for their phytochemical metabolites. Many of these metabolites are involved in plant stress response and communication. Genetics and environment are two major factors that affect plant metabolism. In three separate metabolomics studies, this project examined the effects of both genetic and environmental factors on hop phytochemistry.
In the first study, 23 hop genotypes were grown in two different locations in the Pacific Northwest region of …
Unthinkable Conditions: Affect And Environment In Romanticism And Speculative Fiction, Amelia Z. Greene
Unthinkable Conditions: Affect And Environment In Romanticism And Speculative Fiction, Amelia Z. Greene
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Unthinkable Conditions bridges two literary periods and two theoretical modes in order to illustrate important parallels between historical periods and the writers who attempted to approach the changing environmental conditions of their respective eras. Each chapter names and theorizes a unique form of feeling which then serves as a framework for eco-affective analysis, drawing from existing studies in the environmental humanities and in studies of affect in order to construct a hybrid theoretical model which more fully accounts for the work of the writer treated in each chapter. The central claim of this dissertation is that vital affective innovations accompany …
Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assemblies In Nature And Nanotechnology, Phu Khanh Tang
Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assemblies In Nature And Nanotechnology, Phu Khanh Tang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Nature usually divides complex systems into smaller building blocks specializing in a few tasks since one entity cannot achieve everything. Therefore, self-assembly is a robust tool exploited by Nature to build hierarchical systems that accomplish unique functions. The cell membrane distinguishes itself as an example of Nature’s self-assembly, defining and protecting the cell. By mimicking Nature’s designs using synthetically designed self-assemblies, researchers with advanced nanotechnological comprehension can manipulate these synthetic self-assemblies to improve many aspects of modern medicine and materials science. Understanding the competing underlying molecular interactions in self-assembly is always of interest to the academic scientific community and industry. …
Vertebrate Scavenger Diversity And Ecosystem Services Along An Elevational Gradient In Central Nepal, Aishwarya Bhattacharjee
Vertebrate Scavenger Diversity And Ecosystem Services Along An Elevational Gradient In Central Nepal, Aishwarya Bhattacharjee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A growing number of studies recognize the ecological significance of vertebrate scavengers, and several species belonging to this diverse, functional guild are of high conservation importance around the globe. Studies on taxonomic and functional components of biodiversity often use elevation gradients to comprehensively examine patterns and drivers across multiple spatial scales. Yet, there are relatively few elevational studies on large vertebrates or multi-taxa guilds, and the related variation of their ecosystem services. In particular, scavenger research has largely focused on local-scale studies or regional/global comparisons of local-scale investigations. Moreover, these studies primarily consider taxonomic community characteristics and the patterns of …
Essays On Communication, Shawn M. Simpson
Essays On Communication, Shawn M. Simpson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
One of the central issues of contemporary philosophy and biology is the nature of communication. Early accounts of communication tended to focus on just one side of the communicative divide – the speaker side or the receiver side – and took as their starting point the case of human language. Animal communication, historically, was largely treated as a special case. Now things are different. Now it appears we might have a model that makes sense of sign use in both the human and animal realms and brings together both sides of the signaling divide. It’s still to be seen, however, …
The Role Of Tbx2 In Germ Layer Suppression And Dorsoventral Patterning During Early Vertebrate Development, Shoshana Reich
The Role Of Tbx2 In Germ Layer Suppression And Dorsoventral Patterning During Early Vertebrate Development, Shoshana Reich
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The differentiation of the three primary germ layers is precisely regulated by inductive cues, the intracellular networks through which these signals are transduced, and a broad array of nuclear proteins, such as transcription factors and epigenetic modifiers. Precise regulation of these various factors is crucial to proper development. Members of the T-box family of DNA-binding proteins play a prominent role in the differentiation of the three primary germ layers. VegT, Brachyury, and Eomesodermin function as transcriptional activators, are expressed in the presumptive mesendoderm and, in addition to directly activating the transcription of endoderm- and mesoderm-specific genes, serve variously as regulators …

Avocado Mania: The Rise And Costs Of Our Obsession With Avocados, Rosa C. Lourentzatos
Avocado Mania: The Rise And Costs Of Our Obsession With Avocados, Rosa C. Lourentzatos
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The past two decades have seen a surge in global demand for avocados, which have become popular among middle- and high-income fractions of society in developed regions of the world. Avocados are predominantly consumed far from their centers of origin and out of their traditional cultural context. The United States imports 87 percent of its avocados from a single region in Mexico, Michoacán. The systems of production and provision that have risen to meet the demand for this fashionable fruit have had devastating social and environmental effects, including deforestation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, pollution, displacement of indigenous populations, food insecurity, …
Here Time Becomes Space: The Victorian Spatial Imaginary, Jonathan E. Rachmani
Here Time Becomes Space: The Victorian Spatial Imaginary, Jonathan E. Rachmani
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
My dissertation, “Here Time Becomes Space: The Spatiality of the Victorian Novel,” addresses the Victorian realist representation of space as the open zone of interaction where the circulation of affect among embodied subjects and the places and things in their environment challenges the individualist axis of Victorian plots. I envision this spatiality as a composite literary practice emerging from contact with eighteenth-century realism, the Gothic novel, and the radical revision of the social imagination under the Romantics. Through an analysis of major works by Charlotte Brontё, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Henry James, I trace the dialectical development of realist …
