School-Based Sex Education In The United States And Its Association With Sexual And Reproductive Health Outcomes, 2000-2020, Priscilla M. Lopez

Dissertations and Theses

Background: There are significant sexual and reproductive health disparities in the United States (US). A significant proportion of sexual health disparities among adolescents is likely due in-part to inadequate school-based sex education. Sex education encourages sustainable and informed sexual behavior and has the potential reach adolescents prior to sexual debut and throughout the years at highest risk for adverse sexual health outcomes. However, the way in which sex education is defined and operationalized, as described in the literature, varies substantially, which may lead to wide variation in implementation in schools and this might explain the disparities seen. State-level sex …

A Rare Case Of Thiamine Responsive Megaloblastic Anemia Presenting With Seizures, Waleed Shahzad, Tehmina Inayat, Mansoor Iqbal, Muhammad Hassan, Fibhaa Syed, Naveed Ullah Khan, Mazhar Badshah Sep 2021

A Rare Case Of Thiamine Responsive Megaloblastic Anemia Presenting With Seizures, Waleed Shahzad, Tehmina Inayat, Mansoor Iqbal, Muhammad Hassan, Fibhaa Syed, Naveed Ullah Khan, Mazhar Badshah

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Thiamine responsive megaloblastic anemia (TRMA) also known as Rogers syndrome is a rare entity inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder. It consists of a pentad of diabetes-mellitus, megaloblastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia and sensory-neural hearing loss. The defect occurs due to mutations in SLC19A2 gene resulting in the deficiency of a thiamine transporter proteins which prevents the transport of thiamine in to the cells and tissues. Here we report a 13 year old boy with megaloblastic anemia, sensory-neural deafness and young onset diabetes mellitus who presented with generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Diagnosis was based on clinical features and a rapid response to …

Effects Of Intermittent Fasting On Cognition And Neurodegeneration, Dureshahwar Kanwar, Mohammad Wasay Sep 2021

Effects Of Intermittent Fasting On Cognition And Neurodegeneration, Dureshahwar Kanwar, Mohammad Wasay

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Intermittent fasting (IF) can facilitate neurodegenerative, neuroadaptive and neuroprotective processes leading to profound effects on cognition and dementias. The impact that IF has on the central nervous system is still not fully known. Several factors come into likely effect including changes in energy metabolism, oxidative damage, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and functional changes related to various neurotransmitters and hormones. During IF ketones are produced in large quantities and the brain consumes these for energy. The presence of ketone bodies increases the expression of the genes for brain derived neurotrophic factor which has a powerful effect on dementia and cognition. Brain derived …

Call For Action: Provinces And Territories Must Protect Our Genetic Information, Leah Hutt, Elaine Gibson, Erin Kennedy Sep 2021

Call For Action: Provinces And Territories Must Protect Our Genetic Information, Leah Hutt, Elaine Gibson, Erin Kennedy

Dalhousie Law Journal

The Genetic Non-Discrimination Act (GNDA), passed by Parliament in 2017, seeks to protect Canadians’ genetic information. The GNDA establishes certain criminal prohibitions to the use of genetic information and also amends federal employment and human rights legislation to protect against genetic discrimination. However, we argue that the GNDA alone is insufficient to protect Canadians given constitutional limitations on the powers of the federal government. Areas of profound importance relating to genetic discrimination are governed by the provinces and territories. We identify three key areas of provincial/territorial jurisdiction relevant to protection against genetic discrimination and outline the applicable legislative environments. We …

Assessing The Water Quality Of Three Bar-Built Estuaries In The Central Coast Of California, Micaelina Sarmiento Martinez Sep 2021

Assessing The Water Quality Of Three Bar-Built Estuaries In The Central Coast Of California, Micaelina Sarmiento Martinez

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

Estuaries are coastal confluences with innumerable ecosystem services. With the continuous change in land use including the increasing number of people moving to live in coastal areas and on-going agricultural operations, these coastal systems are being adversely impacted. Climate change is also negatively affecting estuaries. Subsequently, this research study assessed the water quality, monthly, at three different locations of three bar-built estuaries in the Central Coast of California. Water quality was evaluated by the change in chlorophyll-a, nitrogen, phosphorus, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and specific conductivity over the course of 19 months. The eutrophication potential and the role of open …

The City As A Learning Lab: Using Historical Maps And Walking Seminars To Anchor Place-Based Research, Anne E. Leonard, Jason Montgomery Sep 2021

The City As A Learning Lab: Using Historical Maps And Walking Seminars To Anchor Place-Based Research, Anne E. Leonard, Jason Montgomery

Publications and Research

Information literacy, inquiry, and empirical observation skills are essential to undergraduate students’ success, supporting the development of their independent critical thinking skills. In this chapter, we discuss an interdisciplinary course that we, an architecture professor and a librarian, co-taught at New York City College of Technology. The course, Learning Places: Understanding the City, combines place-based learning with primary source research, developing students’ abilities to observe an urban site chosen for study and to document their observations, and in the process build a line of inquiry for further research. The documented observations, newly created primary sources in their own right, initiated …

Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In New Hampshire: Prevalence And The Influence Of Microbial Communities On Removal During Wastewater Treatment, Carmela Sarah Antonellis Sep 2021

Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products In New Hampshire: Prevalence And The Influence Of Microbial Communities On Removal During Wastewater Treatment, Carmela Sarah Antonellis

Master's Theses and Capstones

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) represent a class of 10,000+ emerging contaminants that are widely used in communities for a variety of medical, health, and care applications. Many PPCPs are biologically active compounds, are typically unregulated in drinking water and surface waters, and may be incompletely removed in our municipal wastewater treatment systems. Understanding the sources and fate of PPCPs in the environment is important to protecting ecosystems because some compounds may pose toxicity or result in behavioral impacts to aquatic species. This thesis evaluated the presence and concentration of PPCPs in surface water sample locations in New Hampshire's …

The Presence Of Sea Lice On Steelhead Trout At A Marine Farm In Nh Waters And The Utilization Of Lumpfish As A Biological Delouser, Michael Brian Doherty Sep 2021

The Presence Of Sea Lice On Steelhead Trout At A Marine Farm In Nh Waters And The Utilization Of Lumpfish As A Biological Delouser, Michael Brian Doherty

Master's Theses and Capstones

Sea lice are copepodid ectoparasites that infect fish, and cost salmonid farmers millions of dollars each year in damaged product and mitigation efforts. Conventional treatments can unintentionally impact the ambient environment and lead to the lice developing resistance to the treatments. In recent years, lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) have been utilized successfully to naturally clean sea lice from infected salmonids in European and Atlantic Canadian farms, however this technology has yet to be used in US farms. In New Hampshire coastal waters, New Hampshire Sea Grant and the University of New Hampshire operate an experimental steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farm, AquaFort. …
