Racial Bias In Pain Perception And Treatment Among Healthcare Pre-Professionals, Raegan Bishop
Racial Bias In Pain Perception And Treatment Among Healthcare Pre-Professionals, Raegan Bishop
Master's Theses
The novel coronavirus has impacted Black Americans who have had higher rates of infection, hospitalization and death compared to White Americans. Although higher rates of obesity and other chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure have been implicated and, likely, play a substantial role in the disparity, racial biases among health care providers that affect the provision of care have yet to be examined. There is some evidence that racial bias among healthcare providers affects pain outcomes among Black American women with healthcare providers prescribing Black women pain medication less often than to White women (Badreldin, et. al., 2019; …

Discretized Geometric Approaches To The Analysis Of Protein Structures, John Holland
Discretized Geometric Approaches To The Analysis Of Protein Structures, John Holland
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Proteins play crucial roles in a variety of biological processes. While we know that their amino acid sequence determines their structure, which in turn determines their function, we do not know why particular sequences fold into particular structures. My work focuses on discretized geometric descriptions of protein structure—conceptualizing native structure space as composed of mostly discrete, geometrically defined fragments—to better understand the patterns underlying why particular sequence elements correspond to particular structure elements. This discretized geometric approach is applied to multiple levels of protein structure, from conceptualizing contacts between residues as interactions between discrete structural elements to treating protein structures …
Using Artificial Neural Networks For The Estimation Of Subsurface Tidal Currents From High-Frequency Radar Surface Current Measurements, Max C. Bradbury, Daniel C. Conley
Using Artificial Neural Networks For The Estimation Of Subsurface Tidal Currents From High-Frequency Radar Surface Current Measurements, Max C. Bradbury, Daniel C. Conley
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
An extensive record of current velocities at all levels in the water column is an indispensable requirement for a tidal resource assessment and is fully necessary for accurate determination of available energy throughout the water column as well as estimating likely energy capture for any particular device. Traditional tidal prediction using the least squares method requires a large number of harmonic parameters calculated from lengthy acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements, while long-term in situ ADCPs have the advantage of measuring the real current but are logistically expensive. This study aims to show how these issues can be overcome with …

Background: The growth and maturation of infants reflect their overall health and nutritional status. The purpose of this study is to examine the associations of prenatal and early postnatal factors with infant growth (IG). Methods: A data-driven model was constructed by structural equation modelling to examine the relationships between pre- and early postnatal environmental factors and IG at age 12 months. The IG was a latent variable created from infant weight and waist circumference. Data were obtained on 274 mother–child pairs during pregnancy and the postnatal periods. Results: Maternal pre-pregnancy BMI emerged as an important predictor of IG with both …

Growth Of Invasive Plant Species Communities As A Substantial Issue In Post-Mining Land Development, Paweł Olszewski
Growth Of Invasive Plant Species Communities As A Substantial Issue In Post-Mining Land Development, Paweł Olszewski
Journal of Sustainable Mining
This article concerns the issue of the appearance and growth of invasive plant species in land degraded by hard coal mining and the repercussions of this process, particularly in the context of land reclamation. These species, such as Canadian goldenrod or Japanese knotweed, which nearly always form extensive and monocultural patches of vegetation, contribute to the displacement of both native species and those introduced as part of biological restoration. In 2015, the Central Mining Institute in Katowice prepared a land development concept for a part of the area of the former KWK Paryż mine in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Upper Silesian Industrial …

Impact Of Grazing Management Strategies On Carbon Sequestration In A Semi-Arid Rangeland, Usa, J. D. Reeder, G. E. Schuman, J. A. Morgan, D. R. Lecain, R. H. Hart
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effects of 12 years of grazing management strategies on carbon (C) distribution and sequestration were assessed on a semi-arid mixed-grass prairie in Wyoming, USA. Five grazing treatments were evaluated: non-grazed exclosures; continuous, season-long grazing at a light (22 steer-days ha-1) stocking rate; and, rotationally-deferred, short-duration rotation, and continuous, season-long grazing, all three at a heavy stocking rate (59 steer-days ha-1). Non-grazed exclosures exhibited a large buildup of dead plant material (72% of total aboveground plant matter) and forb biomass represented a large component (35%) of the plant community. Stocking rate, but not grazing strategy, changed …

The goal in breeding programs is to choose candidates that produce offspring with the best phenotypes. In conventional selection, the best candidate is selected with high genotypic values (unobserved), in the assumption that this is related to the observed phenotypic values for several traits. Multi-trait selection indices are used to identify superior genotypes when a number of traits are to be considered simultaneously. Often, the causal relationship among the traits is well known. Structural equation models (SEM) have been used to describe the causal relationships among variables in many biological systems. We present a method for multi-trait genomic selection that …
