Synthetic lethality (SL) is a very important concept for the development of targeted anticancer drugs. However, experimental methods for SL detection often suffer from various issues like high cost and low consistency across cell lines. Hence, computational methods for predicting novel SLs have recently emerged as complements for wet-lab experiments. In addition, SL data can be represented as a graph where nodes are genes and edges are the SL interactions. It is thus motivated to design advanced graph-based machine learning algorithms for SL prediction. In this paper, we propose a novel SL prediction method using Multi-view Graph Auto-Encoder (SLMGAE). We …

Development Of A Correction For Defensiveness In The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Second Edition-Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) Profiles Of Adult Male Sex Offenders, Katie Marie Glauner
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical and forensic psychologists often evaluate sex offenders to determine the level of risk they pose to the community and identify their treatment needs to reduce the risk of future recidivism. Personality assessments are administered in sex offender evaluations to aid in answering these referral questions, while also providing information regarding the evaluees’ response style to the test and descriptions of their personality functioning. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and its revisions have been the most widely used personality assessments in sex offender evaluations, with previous research demonstrating that sex offenders often respond defensively to the test by minimizing …

Many modern problems arise from the misinterpretation of the Bible, unfortunately. One of my best Church History teachers Amadeo Molnár at the Protestant Faculty in Prague told us: “The history of the Christian Church is the history of the interpretation of the Bible.” At first, I doubted this statement’s truth, but after some reflections, I understood. Divisions were created and wars were fought because of certain dogmas, and millions were tortured, killed, or enslaved due to specific ideologies and wrong belief systems by believers. So many atrocities were committed in the name of God!

Boosting cold stress tolerance in crop plants can minimize stress-mediated yield losses. Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.), one of the most consumed cereal crops, originated from subtropical regions and is generally sensitive to low temperature environments. Within the two subspecies of rice, JAPONICA, and INDICA, the cold tolerance potential of its accessions is highly variable and depends on their genetic background. Yet, cold stress tolerance response mechanisms are complex and not well understood. This study utilized 370 accessions from the Rice Diversity Panel 1 (RDP1) to investigate and correlate four cold stress tolerance response phenotypes: membrane damage, …

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have been labeled as a modern-day epidemic, increasing exponentially with the advancement of technology and society. Gaining a better understanding of the cognitive paths, including the chemical and electrical signals of the brain, neural correlates, and possible interventions for TBI patients allows for the best possible outcome for every patient, and allows for the further advancement of care. By revising and reassessing the ways in which TBIs are categorized and described the prognosis for recovery paints a more realistic view for each individual patient case. The symptoms and impairments that may occur post-injury can be monitored …

Individuals suffering from anorexia nervosa experience dysmorphic perceptions of their body and desire to act on these perceptions by refusing food. In some cases, anorexics want to refuse food to the point of death. This paper explores the following question: If an anorexic, A, wants to refuse food when the food would either be lifesaving or prevent serious bodily harm, can A's refusal be valid? It is shown that there is compelling reason to think that anorexics can validly refuse food, even in these extreme circumstances.

The Holistic Self-Care Learning Experience Of Rn-To-Bsn Students: A Phenomenological Study Of Meaning And Value, Elaina C. Mahlan
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The health of the nursing workforce is a critical aspect of high-quality health care and community health promotion, but extensive research indicates that too many nurses neglect selfcare and suffer negative health outcomes. While nursing education must provide self-care learning experiences to improve the health of nurses, the value and influence of a learning experience must be interpreted from the learner’s point of view. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to elicit the personal value that RN-to-BSN students ascribed to a self-care learning experience within a holistic nursing course at a public university. The holistic nursing paradigm offers a …

Burkholderia cenocepacia is a member of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc), a group of bacteria with members responsible for causing lung infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The most severe outcome of Bcc infection in CF patients is cepacia syndrome, a disease characterized by necrotizing pneumonia with bacteremia and sepsis. B. cenocepacia is strongly associated with cepacia syndrome, making it one of the most virulent members of the Bcc. Mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of B. cenocepacia in lung infections and cepacia syndrome remain to be uncovered. B. cenocepacia is primarily an intracellular pathogen and encodes the type VI secretion system …

Ground-based animal models have been used extensively to understand the effects of microgravity on various physiological systems. Among them, hindlimb suspension (HLS), developed in 1979 in rats, remains the gold-standard and allows researchers to study the consequences of total unloading of the hind limbs while inducing a cephalic fluid shift. While this model has already brought valuable insights to space biology, few studies have directly compared functional decrements in the muscles of males and females during HLS. We exposed 28 adult Wistar rats (14 males and 14 females) to 14 days of HLS or normal loading (NL) to better assess …

Sparsity-Based Recovery Of Three-Dimensional Photoacoustic Images From Compressed Single-Shot Optical Detection, Dylan Green, Anne Gelb, Geoffrey P. Luke
Dartmouth Scholarship
Photoacoustic (PA) imaging combines optical excitation with ultrasonic detection to achieve high-resolution imaging of biological samples. A high-energy pulsed laser is often used for imaging at multi-centimeter depths in tissue. These lasers typically have a low pulse repetition rate, so to acquire images in real-time, only one pulse of the laser can be used per image. This single pulse necessitates the use of many individual detectors and receive electronics to adequately record the resulting acoustic waves and form an image. Such requirements make many PA imaging systems both costly and complex. This investigation proposes and models a method of volumetric …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in the elderly population, but its underlying cause has not been fully elucidated. Recent studies have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in regulating the expression levels of genes associated with AD development. In this study, we analyzed miRNAs in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from AD patients and cognitively normal (including amyloid positive) individuals. miR-1273g-3p was identified as an AD-associated miRNA and found to be elevated in the CSF of early-stage AD patients. The overexpression of miR-1273g-3p enhanced amyloid beta (Aβ) production by inducing oxidative stress and mitochondrial …

Race-Based Remedies In Criminal Law, Ion Meyn
Race-Based Remedies In Criminal Law, Ion Meyn
William & Mary Law Review
This Article evaluates the constitutional feasibility of using race-based remedies to address racial disparities in the criminal system. Compared to white communities, communities of color are over-policed and over-incarcerated. Criminal system stakeholders recognize that these conditions undermine perceptions of legitimacy critical to ensuring public safety. As jurisdictions assiduously attempt race-neutral fixes, they also acknowledge the shortcomings of such interventions. Nevertheless, jurisdictions dismiss the feasibility of deploying more effective race-conscious strategies due to the shadow of a constitutional challenge. The apprehension is understandable. Debates around affirmative action in higher education and government contracting reveal fierce hostility toward race-based remedies.
