Water Dynamics In A Peptide-Appended Pillar[5]Arene Artificial Channel In Lipid And Biomimetic Membranes, Daniel Ryan Barden, Harish Vashisth

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Peptide-appended Pillar[5]arene (PAP) is an artificial water channel that can be incorporated into lipid and polymeric membranes to achieve high permeability and enhanced selectivity for angstrom-scale separations [Shen et al. Nat. Commun. 9:2294 (2018)]. In comparison to commonly studied rigid carbon nanotubes, PAP channels are conformationally flexible, yet these channels allow a high water permeability [Y. Liu and H. Vashisth Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 21:22711 (2019)]. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we study water dynamics in PAP channels embedded in biological (lipid) and biomimetic (block-copolymer) membranes to probe the effect of the membrane environment on water transport characteristics of PAP …

Faculty Authored Articles

Forest fires modify soil organic carbon and suppress soil respiration for many decades after the initial disturbance. The associated changes in soil autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration from the time of the forest fire, however, are less well characterized. The FireResp model predicts soil autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration parameterized with a novel dataset across a fire chronosequence in the Yukon and Northwest Territories of Canada. The dataset consisted of soil incubation experiments and field measurements of soil respiration and soil carbon stocks. The FireResp model contains submodels that consider a Q10 (exponential) model of respiration compared to models of heterotrophic respiration …

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting 70 million people worldwide. Owing to the similarity in anatomy and physiology between human and mouse eyes and the ability to genetically manipulate mice, mouse models are an invaluable resource for studying mechanisms underlying disease phenotypes and for developing therapeutic strategies. Here, we report the discovery of a new mouse model of early-onset glaucoma that bears a transversion substitution c. G344T, which results in a missense mutation, p. R115L in PITX2. The mutation causes an elevation in intraocular pressure (IOP) and progressive death of retinal ganglion cells (RGC). These ocular phenotypes recapitulate …

Laboratory Diagnostic Testing For Covid-19, Nuntra Suwantarat, Sidayu Suriya

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Laboratory tests play an important role for Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) diagnosis. The diagnostic key point is an appropriate testing during the course of disease. In the early course of COVID-19 infection, nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) especially real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of the respiratory specimen is the gold standard test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) detection due to the highest sensitivity and specificity during the first 2 weeks after the exposure. A rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 has less complexity of the testing procedure and the faster TAT. However, a rapid antigen test …

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

In the crisis of COVID-19 pandemic, there is no specific agent to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection. Repurposing medication can be an alternative agent. Remdesivir is the first antiviral drug that has been approved for COVID-19 treatment whereas lopinavir/ritonavir and hydroxychloroquine, which was early used in SARS-CoV-2 widespread, are against by well-known guidelines due to lack of efficacy and potential toxicity. Corticosteroids are an essential supportive care in COVID-19 patient with severe disease to reduce lung inflammation. Favipiravir may have a potential benefit for COVID-19 patient, but the data is still uncertain. Ivermectin, an antihelmintic agent, may be used against SARS-CoV-2 but …

Covid-19 Associated Coagulopathy: Inflammation And Coagulation Linkage, Lantarima Bhoopat

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

The severe acute respiratory distress syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19), has become a worldwide pandemic since emerging in December 2019. The severity of the disease ranges from asymptomatic carriers to severe manifestations, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multiorgan failure. The proposed etiology for severe disease and death were micro- and macro-vascular thromboses, which are major components of COVID-19 associated coagulopathy (CAC). CAC is associated with cytokine storm, causing inflammation, endothelial injury, and subsequent thrombosis. Heparin is useful in this circumstance because of many proposed mechanisms. Multiple studies have reported the benefit of …

Heat stress affects oocyte developmental competence and is a major cause of reduced fertility in heat stressed cattle. Negative effects of heat stress on the oocyte have been observed at morphological, biochemical and developmental levels. However, the mechanisms by which heat stress affects the oocyte at the transcriptional and epigenetic levels remain to be further elucidated. Here we aimed to investigate the effect of heat stress on oocyte quality, transcriptomic profiles and DNA methylation of oocytes collected through the transition from spring to summer under Louisiana conditions. Summer season resulted in a lower number of high quality oocytes obtained compared …

Researchers have called for more empirical research exploring better ways to organize clinical practice around teacher candidate (TC) learning and the coursework-fieldwork gap. This study responds to their call by exploring secondary mathematics TC learning in early clinical placements that use co-teaching. Further, this study views co-teaching in clinical practice through the lens of an activity system. An activity system conceptualizes co-teaching in clinical practice as a complex learning environment or a learning ecology. This study uses a convergent mixed methods design. Findings reveal evidence of TC learning of eight key practices associated with co-teaching in their early clinical placements. …

Use Of Biochar And Zeolite For Landfill Leachate Treatment: Experimental Studies And Reuse Potential Assessment, Thanh Thieu Lam Oct 2021

Use Of Biochar And Zeolite For Landfill Leachate Treatment: Experimental Studies And Reuse Potential Assessment, Thanh Thieu Lam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Leachate is a highly colored liquid waste product of landfills that contains high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), refractory organic matter, and heavy metals. It is commonly disposed to local publicly owned treatment works (POTWs). With these potent characteristics, it interferes with the physical, biological, and chemical treatment processes within POTWs. Sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBR) and hybrid subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CW) have been used in the past to treat landfill leachate, but their design and performance can still be optimized. Addition of low-cost adsorbent materials to SBBRs and CWs, such as biochar and zeolite, have the potential to …
