A Simple Method For Estimating Alfalfa Fiber Content In The Field, Reuben M. Sulc, K. A. Albrecht, V. N. Owens

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Predictive equations for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) quality (PEAQ) based on length of the longest stem and maturity stage of the most mature stem in a sample were developed and validated for estimating neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) concentrations in alfalfa. The objective of this research was to validate PEAQ with a simplified maturity scale when estimating fiber content. Alfalfa samples varying in height and maturity were collected throughout the growing season from fields across six states in USA. Observed NDF and ADF values (determined via wet chemistry) were regressed on estimated values. The estimated …

Professional Caring In Affective Services; The Ambivalence Of Emotional Nurture In Practice, Niall Hanlon Nov 2021

Professional Caring In Affective Services; The Ambivalence Of Emotional Nurture In Practice, Niall Hanlon

Articles

Emotional nurturance is a fundamental feature of all forms of professional caring. As well as delivering expert social, health, education, practical or personal services, good caregivers possess an other-centred disposition, are emotionally intelligent and relationally skilled, and morally caring. Despite this, the value, role, and status of emotional nurturance in professional care is ambivalent. Drawing on feminist care theory, Hochchild’s emotional labour theory, and Bourdieusian social reproduction theory, as well as diverse empirical studies, this paper identifies how emotion is marginalised and misrecognised and calls for the reappraisal of emotion in professional care work in ways that appreciate tensions, contradictions, …

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Parental support (PS) and parental monitoring (PM) are known protective factors against adolescent substance use (SU). However, little is known about whether PS and PM may affect SU outcomes differently by gender and age. This study examined the relationship between PS and PM and adolescent SU, specifically alcohol and tobacco use, stratified by gender and age group.

Methods: Middle and high school students (n = 2351, 48.5% Female) completed surveys of self-reported SU, perceived PS and PM, and socioeconomic background. Age group was defined dichotomously as grade 7–8 Middle school and grade 9–10 High school students. PS and …

Human-Human Hand Interactions Aid Balance During Walking By Haptic Communication, Mengnan Wu, Luke Drnach, Sistania M. Bong, Yun Seong Song, Lena H. Ting

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Principles from human-human physical interaction may be necessary to design more intuitive and seamless robotic devices to aid human movement. Previous studies have shown that light touch can aid balance and that haptic communication can improve performance of physical tasks, but the effects of touch between two humans on walking balance has not been previously characterized. This study examines physical interaction between two persons when one person aids another in performing a beam-walking task. 12 pairs of healthy young adults held a force sensor with one hand while one person walked on a narrow balance beam (2 cm wide x …

Gender Differences In Urothelial Bladder Cancer: Effects Of Natural Killer Lymphocyte Immunity, Charles T. Lutz, Lydia Livas, Steven R. Presnell, Morgan Sexton, Peng Wang

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

Men are more likely to develop cancer than women. In fact, male predominance is one of the most consistent cancer epidemiology findings. Additionally, men have a poorer prognosis and an increased risk of secondary malignancies compared to women. These differences have been investigated in order to better understand cancer and to better treat both men and women. In this review, we discuss factors that may cause this gender difference, focusing on urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) pathogenesis. We consider physiological factors that may cause higher male cancer rates, including differences in X chromosome gene expression. We discuss how androgens may promote …

Assessing The Role Of Photochemistry In Driving The Composition Of Dissolved Organic Matter In Glacier Runoff, Amy D. Holt, Anne M. Kellerman, Wenbo Li, Aron Stubbins, Sasha Wagner, Amy Mckenna, Jason B. Fellman, Eran Hood, Robert G. Spencer

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in glacier runoff is aliphatic-rich, yet studies have proposed that DOM originates mainly from allochthonous, aromatic, and often aged material. Allochthonous organic matter (OM) is exposed to ultraviolet radiation both in atmospheric transport and post-deposition on the glacier surface. Thus, we evaluate photochemistry as a mechanism to account for the compositional disconnect between allochthonous OM sources and glacier runoff DOM composition. Six endmember OM sources (including soils and diesel particulate matter) were leached and photo-irradiated for 28 days in a solar simulator, until >90% of initial chromophoric DOM was removed. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry was used to …

Investigating Values In Discourse: Ideals And Social Plans, Luke Edward Hanst Nov 2021

Investigating Values In Discourse: Ideals And Social Plans, Luke Edward Hanst

Dissertations and Theses

Social scientists argue that values enable group coordination. I explore two theories of values before turning to evidence provided by Amanda Gorman's inaugural poem, "The Hill We Climb." First, the paradigm of Shalom Schwartz describes values as transsituational goals which enable groups to coordinate action and evaluate the world. I argue the Schwartz paradigm zooms out from values into categories while I need a means to zoom in to understand values in discourse. I turn to the Pragmatic Prospection paradigm to elaborate the cognitive ontology of goals and to understand the function of language. I argue that values are shared …

Research Sites Get Closer To Field Camps Over Time: Informing Environmental Management Through A Geospatial Analysis Of Science In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Stephen M. Chignell, Madeline E. Myers, Adrian Howkins, Andrew Fountain

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As in many parts of the world, the management of environmental science research in Antarctica relies on cost-benefit analysis of negative environmental impact versus positive scientific gain. Several studies have examined the environmental impact of Antarctic field camps, but very little work looks at how the placement of these camps influences scientific research. In this study, we integrate bibliometrics, geospatial analysis, and historical research to understand the relationship between field camp placement and scientific production in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of East Antarctica. Our analysis of the scientific corpus from 1907–2016 shows that, on average, research sites have become less …

Preventing Substance Abuse Among Pregnant And Gestating Mothers In Texas State, Latosha Belton Nov 2021

Preventing Substance Abuse Among Pregnant And Gestating Mothers In Texas State, Latosha Belton

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

Nationally, substance use during pregnancy “…increased from 1.19 to 5.63 per 1,000 hospital births.” (SAMHSA, 2016) Infants born with substance withdrawal symptoms leading to a diagnosis of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) affect infant mortality rate (IMR) data. Statewide research shows that in 2015, Texas’ PHR 2/3’s IMR surpassed that of the state and national average. Gleeson, (2017) Further research documents the concentration of high IMR averages being located in communities at or below the poverty line representative of underrepresented, minority populations. Bishop, Borkowski, Couillard, et al., (2017) In efforts to reduce the amount of infants born with substance ab/use diagnoses …

Preventing Adolescent Suicide In Washington State, Kevin Mangat Nov 2021

Preventing Adolescent Suicide In Washington State, Kevin Mangat

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

The population that I am addressing is the adolescent population within Washington State. The problem is that suicide rates for adolescents in Washington State have been increasing in the past decade. After doing research, some key findings are that our society and with Washington State, we focus more on acute care for mental illness than using preventative measures to help with mental illness. The recommendations are to find and implement resources through preventative measure that can help prevent adolescent suicide in Washington State.

An Examination Of Freshman Non-Nursing Students' Attitude Toward Nursing As A Career Choice For Males In The Southeastern United States, Tiffany Gordon Cox Nov 2021

An Examination Of Freshman Non-Nursing Students' Attitude Toward Nursing As A Career Choice For Males In The Southeastern United States, Tiffany Gordon Cox

Dissertations

The nursing shortage is predicted to continue into the year of 2030. Governmental and nongovernmental healthcare stakeholders have recognized a key factor in decreasing the shortage is to increase the recruitment and retention of males in nursing. The United States has a workforce comprising 3.5 million nurses. Yet, males represent only 9% of the working nurses in the United States. To decrease the nursing shortage, males must be a part of the equation. Male patients typically feel more comfortable discussing certain conditions, especially those related to sexual and reproductive health with other men than with women. Male nurses add to …

Machine Learning For Species Habitat Analysis, Abigail Lavallin Nov 2021

Machine Learning For Species Habitat Analysis, Abigail Lavallin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Management and conservation initiatives will always be controlled by finite resources, whether financialor temporal. Understanding a species’ spatial ecology, and how its requirements vary across habitats and locations is key to a successful species management plan. During recent decades, it has been noted how many species populations have declined, despite conservation practices working to increase their numbers. The most prevalent impacts affecting fauna populations have come from anthropogenic change in the form of habitat loss and destruction, along with fragmentation, and global climate change. There is a clear need for management practices to now operate on an entire landscape instead …

Insights Into Abscisic Acid And Phosphatidic Acid Signal Transduction Dynamics In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Ruth Wanjiru Ndathe Nov 2021

Insights Into Abscisic Acid And Phosphatidic Acid Signal Transduction Dynamics In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Ruth Wanjiru Ndathe

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant hormone that triggers a signaling transduction in response to drought, salinity, and cold. The core components in the ABA signaling pathway that lead to downstream ABA responses have been identified.

Phosphatidic acid (PA) is a membrane phospholipid that is involved in the signaling pathway for ABA-induced stomatal closure. We tested whether PA is involved in the signaling pathway for ABA-induced gene expression as well, using model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We selected the RD29A gene which is a canonical drought gene that is induced by ABA. We found that PA is not involved in …

An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Liesman, Olcay Akman, Daniel Hrozencik Nov 2021

An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Liesman, Olcay Akman, Daniel Hrozencik

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Genes are segments of DNA that provide a blueprint for cells and organisms to effectively control processes and regulations within individuals. There have been many attempts to quantify these processes, as a greater understanding of how genes operate could have large impacts on both personalized and precision medicine. Current biological methods cannot easily reveal the details of gene interactions. Therefore, we use gene expression data to infer networks of interactions, which are called gene regulatory networks or GRNs. These methods are designed to bypass the need for large amounts of data and extensive knowledge about a network. In this work, …
