Mechanisms Of Movement In Meroplankton: A Primer For Dispersal, Molly Kendall James Jan 2021

Mechanisms Of Movement In Meroplankton: A Primer For Dispersal, Molly Kendall James

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Biophysical models have become the ‘go-to’ tool for predicting the dispersive trajectories of planktic marine organisms, and are used to design Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), identify pathways of invasion, and understand metapopulation dynamics and biogeography. Yet, despite this relatively long history of development, continued technological advancement and increased usage, models continue to often fail to predict patterns in nature. As biophysical models are able to accurately predict the dispersal of abiotic particles, it is argued that it is how we incorporate larval behaviour (sensu vertical swimming) in models that may be decoupling predictions of dispersal and species distribution patterns. Yet, …

A Novel Method Based On Long Short Term Memory Network And Discrete-Time Zeroing Neural Algorithm For Upper-Limb Continuous Estimation Using Semg Signals, Yuanyuan Chai, Keping Liu, Chunxu Li, Zhongbo Sun, Long Jin, Tian Shi Jan 2021

A Novel Method Based On Long Short Term Memory Network And Discrete-Time Zeroing Neural Algorithm For Upper-Limb Continuous Estimation Using Semg Signals, Yuanyuan Chai, Keping Liu, Chunxu Li, Zhongbo Sun, Long Jin, Tian Shi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper, a novel closed-loop model based on surface electromyography (sEMG) comprised a long short term memory (LSTM) network and discrete-time zeroing neural algorithm called zeroing neural network (ZNN), which is developed to estimate joint angles and angular velocities of human upper limb with joint damping. The dynamic model of human upper limb with joint damping is set up as the initial equation. Then, the LSTM network is proposed as an open-loop model which described the input-output relationship between the sEMG signals and joint motion intention. Besides, a novel closed-loop model is built via ZNN for eliminating the predicted …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Vitamin K content of foods is known to vary substantially by geographical location. In Australia, no Vitamin K database of food exists, thereby creating ambiguity when trying to develop national dietary intake guidelines. This investigation aimed to develop a Vitamin K database for commonly consumed foods that are commercially available in Australian supermarkets. The Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone; PK) and K2 (menaquinone; MK4, MK7) content of 60 foods known to contain Vitamin K were assessed (e.g., vegetables fruits, oils, animal products, dairy and fermented foods). A liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS) method was developed and used to measure PK …

Pleural Fluid Investigations For Pleural Infections, Bapti Roy, Hui Juin Shak, Y. C.Gary Lee

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Over 1.5 million patients are admitted to hospital with pneumonia in the United States each year. Up to 50% of them can develop a parapneumonic effusion which is associated with higher mortality. The incidence of pleural infection continues to rise, particularly in the elderly and those with comorbidities. Parapneumonic effusions cover a spectrum of presentations from a free-flowing 'simple parapneumonic effusion' to a septated 'complicated parapneumonic effusion' (CPE) (usually from bacterial pleural invasion) and 'empyema' (presence of pleural pus). Pleural infection is defined as either CPE or empyema, and usually requires evacuation of the infected fluid. Laboratory investigations play an …

The interplay between the compositional changes in the gastrointestinal microbiome, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) susceptibility and severity, and host functions is complex and yet to be fully understood. This study performed 16S rRNA gene-based microbial profiling of 143 subjects. We observed structural and compositional alterations in the gut microbiota of the SARS-CoV-2-infected group in comparison to non-infected controls. The gut microbiota composition of the SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals showed an increase in anti-inflammatory bacteria such as Faecalibacterium (p-value = 1.72 × 10–6) and Bacteroides (p-value = 5.67 × 10–8). We also revealed a higher relative abundance of the highly …

Led Illumination For High-Quality High-Yield Crop Growth In Protected Cropping Environments, Md Momtazur Rahman, David L. Field, Soyed M. Ahmed, Md Tanvir Hasan, Mohammad Khairul Basher, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Vegetables and herbs play a central role in the human diet due to their low fat and calory content and essential antioxidant, phytochemicals, and fiber. It is well known that the manipulation of light wavelengths illuminating the crops can enhance their growth rate and nutrient contents. To date, it has not been easy to generalize the effects of LED illumination because of the differences in the plant species investigated, the measured traits, the way wavelengths have been manipulated, and the plants’ growing environments. In order to address this gap, we undertook a quantitative review of LED manipulation in relation to …

Follow The Leader: Child-Led Inquiries To Develop Science Learning Of Young Children, Pauline Roberts Jan 2021

Follow The Leader: Child-Led Inquiries To Develop Science Learning Of Young Children, Pauline Roberts

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Science education in the early years has been found to be lacking when compared to other content areas, specifically numeracy and literacy. It has been suggested that this lack of opportunity for young children to learn science is due to educator’s lack of confidence to teach science, fuelled by concerns regarding a reduced understanding of science concepts. For young children, however, science is everywhere and is embedded in all aspects of their lives as they explore and interact to make sense of the world around them. Given this natural connection to science, it is important for educators to notice and …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic autoimmune disease caused by the specific destruction of pancreatic islet β cells and is characterized as the absolute insufficiency of insulin secretion. Current insulin replacement therapy supplies insulin in a non-physiological way and is associated with devastating complications. Experimental islet transplantation therapy has been proven to restore glucose homeostasis in people with severe T1DM. However, it is restricted by many factors such as severe shortage of donor sources, progressive loss of donor cells, high cost, etc. As pluripotent stem cells have the potential to give rise to all cells including islet β …

A Survey Of Western Australian Teachers’ Use Of Texts In Supporting Beginning Readers, Simmone Pogorzelski, Susan Main, Susan Hill

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Connected text reading is crucial to beginning reading development as this is where children apply the reading skills they are learning. The most recent version of the Australian Curriculum includes the requirement that teachers use both predictable and decodable texts in early reading instruction. As each text type is underpinned by a different approach to reading instruction, this creates a potential dilemma for teachers when implementing the curriculum. A preliminary study of the instructional practices used to teach reading in the first two years of schooling was therefore conducted to investigate how early years teachers make use of two different …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Data that can be used to monitor biodiversity through time are essential for conservation and management. The reef-forming worm, Sabellaria alveolata (L. 1767) is currently classed as ‘Data Deficient’ due to an imbalance in the spread of data on its distribution. Little is known about the distribution of this species around Ireland. Using data archaeology, we collated past and present distribution records and discovered that S. alveolata has a discontinuous distribution with large gaps between populations. Many regions lack data and should be targeted for sampling. Biodiversity surveys revealed that S. alveolata supported diverse epibiotic algal communities. Retrograding (declining) reefs …

Numerical Assessment Of The Overall Heat Transfer And Pressure Drop Performances Of An Aqueous Ammonia Base-Nanofluids In Rectangular Microchannel Heat Sinks, Ahmed Mohammed Adham, Hussein A. Mohammed

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In this paper, the thermal and hydrodynamic performances of an aqueous ammonia base-nanofluid (Al2O3-NH3(aqu)) cooled in a rectangular microchannel heat sink was numerically investigated. The range of Reynolds number used in the investigation were between 140-1400. In order to assess the performance of the system during the employment of the proposed nanofluid, H2O and Al2O3-H2O were also tested and their performances were compared to Al2O3-NH3(aqu) performance in terms of thermal resistance and pressure drop. Results from the simulation showed that the proposed nanofluid outperformed pure water and slightly higher than Al2O3-H2O in terms of thermal resistance (for Re = 1400, …

Setting Tidal Forcing For Regional Modelling Of Internal Waves, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Nataliya Stashchuk Jan 2021

Setting Tidal Forcing For Regional Modelling Of Internal Waves, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Nataliya Stashchuk

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Two methods for setting tides in regional numerical models focussed on replication of internal waves are discussed in this paper. A traditional procedure prescribes the tidal forcing at the boundaries of the model domain. As it follows from our analysis, this method works well in some cases but does not allow to control identical generation conditions in all points of the model grid. Tidal ellipses are spatially dependent on the relative distance to the model boundaries. An alternative method for activation of tidal motions in general circulation models is to set a tidal body force on the right-hand side of …

Heterogeneous Tidal Marsh Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation Among And Within Temperate Estuaries In Australia, Connor Gorham, Paul S. Lavery, Jeffrey J. Kelleway, Pere Masque, Oscar Serrano Jan 2021

Heterogeneous Tidal Marsh Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation Among And Within Temperate Estuaries In Australia, Connor Gorham, Paul S. Lavery, Jeffrey J. Kelleway, Pere Masque, Oscar Serrano

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The scarcity of data on tidal marsh soil accumulation rates (SAR) and soil organic carbon accumulation rates (CAR) globally precludes a comprehensive assessment of the role of tidal marshes in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Particularly few data exist from the southern hemisphere and for Australia in particular, which contains ~24% of globally recognised tidal marsh extent. Here we estimate SAR and CAR over the last 70 years using 210Pb-based geochronologies in temperate estuarine tidal marsh ecosystems in southern Western Australia (WA). Specifically, we assessed tidal marsh ecosystems situated in two geomorphic settings (marine vs. fluvial deltas) within 10 wave-dominated, …

Boras, Vanessa Balagué, Eva Calvo, Josep M. Gasol, Cèlia Marrasé, Carles Pelejero, Jarone Pinhassi, Maria Montserrat Sala, Dolors Vaqué

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Anthropogenic carbon emissions are causing changes in seawater carbonate chemistry including a decline in the pH of the oceans. While its aftermath for calcifying microbes has been widely studied, the effect of ocean acidification (OA) on marine viruses and their microbial hosts is controversial, and even more in combination with another anthropogenic stressor, i.e., human-induced nutrient loads. In this study, two mesocosm acidification experiments with Mediterranean waters from different seasons revealed distinct effects of OA on viruses and viral-mediated prokaryotic mortality depending on the trophic state and the successional stage of the plankton community. In the winter bloom situation, low …

Accounting For The Influence Of Temperature And Location When Predicting Seagrass (Halophila Ovalis) Photosynthetic Performance, Nicole E. Said, Kathryn Mcmahon, Paul Lavery Jan 2021

Accounting For The Influence Of Temperature And Location When Predicting Seagrass (Halophila Ovalis) Photosynthetic Performance, Nicole E. Said, Kathryn Mcmahon, Paul Lavery

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

We show that the effect of temperature on photosynthesis of a widely distributed and ecological important seagrass species was not consistent among locations, with some evidence of acclimation to the local temperature range. This has important implications for modelling seagrass productivity and the impacts of light reduction on seagrass ecosystems. Reduced light availability is one of the main pressures negatively impacting on seagrass meadows worldwide. Our knowledge of seagrass photosynthetic characteristics is critical to predicting and managing impacts of light reducing activities but suffers from two critical information gaps: first, data is overwhelmingly derived from studies of leaf tissue and …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Measuring bile acids in feces has an important role in disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and can be considered a measure of health status. Therefore, the primary aim was to develop a sensitive, robust, and high throughput liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method with minimal sample preparation for quantitative determination of bile acids in human feces applicable to large cohorts. Due to the chemical diversity of bile acids, their wide concentration range in feces, and the complexity of feces itself, developing a sensitive and selective analytical method for bile acids is challenging. A simple extraction method using methanol suitable for subsequent …
