BACKGROUND: Optimal management for recurrent IDH-mutant glioma after radiation therapy (RT) is not well-defined. This study assesses practice patterns for managing recurrent IDH-mutant astrocytoma (Astro) and 1p/19q codeleted oligodendroglioma (Oligo) after RT and surveys their clinical outcomes after different salvage approaches.
METHODS: Ninety-four recurrent Astro or Oligo patients after RT who received salvage systemic therapy (SST) between 2001 and 2019 at a tertiary cancer center were retrospectively analyzed. SST was defined as either alkylating chemotherapy (AC) or nonalkylating therapy (non-AC). Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method from the start of SST. Multivariable analysis …

Validation Of Diffusion Mri As A Biomarker For Efficacy Using Randomized Phase Iii Trial Of Bevacizumab With Or Without Vb-111 In Recurrent Glioblastoma, Benjamin M Ellingson, Jian L Campian, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Evidence from single and multicenter phase II trials have suggested diffusion MRI is a predictive imaging biomarker for survival benefit in recurrent glioblastoma (rGBM) treated with anti-VEGF therapy. The current study confirms these findings in a large, randomized phase III clinical trial.
METHODS: Patients with rGBM were enrolled in a phase III randomized (1:1), controlled trial (NCT02511405) to compare the efficacy and safety of bevacizumab (BV) versus BV in combination with ofranergene obadenovec (BV+VB-111), an anti-cancer viral therapy. In 170 patients with diffusion MRI available, pretreatment enhancing tumor volume and ADC histogram analysis were used to phenotype patients as …

Broadening The Capability Of Kinetics Analysis In Biomechanics, Nicholas Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Two studies are discussed in this manuscript each preceded by a literature review of the topic. The first review and study explore agility movements and the effect that alternative upper designs in shoes might have on ground reaction force measures of performance. The second review and study evaluate methods of predicting ground reaction forces without the use of a force platform. A method of using effective forces and ways of improving its accuracy are evaluated in depth.

Health Disparities And Treatment Approaches In Portopulmonary Hypertension And Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: An Analysis Of The Pulmonary Hypertension Association Registry, Hilary M Dubrock, Murali Chakinala, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Compared to idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH), patients with portopulmonary hypertension (POPH) have worse survival. Health disparities may contribute to these differences but have not been studied. We sought to compare socioeconomic factors in patients with POPH and IPAH and to determine whether socioeconomic status and/or POPH diagnosis were associated with treatment and health-care utilization. We performed a cross-sectional study of adults enrolled in the Pulmonary Hypertension Association Registry. Patients with IPAH (n = 344) and POPH (n = 57) were compared. Compared with IPAH, patients with POPH were less likely to be college graduates (19.6% vs. 34.9%, p = …
Reconstructability Analysis Of The Predictors Of Physical Functioning Status In Older Americans By Race And Ethnicity, Amanuel Melekin, Martin Zwick
Reconstructability Analysis Of The Predictors Of Physical Functioning Status In Older Americans By Race And Ethnicity, Amanuel Melekin, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper demonstrates the use of reconstructability analysis to examine race/ethnic differences in physical functioning status among older Americans. Reconstructability analysis is an information theory and graph theory method which has been successfully used in multivariate data modeling. The health and retirement study data from 2004 are used for this demonstration. Out of eighteen independent variables included, seven variables appeared in the best models selected. Uncertainty reductions in physical functioning status were substantial across the models but the magnitudes and predictive variables varied slightly by race/ethnicity. Examination of the model probability distributions indicated that composite independent variable states of overlapping …

Assessing Barriers And Benefits To A Food Waste Composting Pilot Program In Oberlin, Ohio, Julia Halm
Honors Papers
Food waste represents significant amounts of money, energy, and natural resources throughout its lifecycle from production to disposal. Diverting the quantity of food waste sent to landfills is necessary to address the growing strain on resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study was a collaborative effort between the City of Oberlin and Oberlin College designed to identify challenges and benefits to establishing a pilot municipal composting program. Establishing a citywide composting program will help Oberlin achieve its goal of carbon neutrality. We used food audits, stakeholder interviews, and emissions reduction models to better understand the best approach to municipal …

Impact Of Race, Tracking And Advanced Course Experiences On Self-Esteem, Identity And Access To Higher Education Among Students Of Color, Katharine A. Ware
Honors Papers
This paper contributes to existing research on race, educational experiences, access to higher education, and self-esteem. Through fifteen in-depth interviews with Oberlin students of color, I investigate the impact of tracking in high school experiences as it relates to self-esteem and identity. Additionally, I examine how these experiences, along with educational support, affect access to higher education. Three major findings emerge. First, during late elementary school/early middle school, students are assessed, grouped by presumed abilities, and placed in specific, racialized educational tracks. My participants described a train analogy in which the advanced track train leaves the station in early middle …
Dancing On The Dead: Death, Entertainment, And Respectability In Victorian London, Noa H. Segal
Dancing On The Dead: Death, Entertainment, And Respectability In Victorian London, Noa H. Segal
Honors Papers
As industrializing nineteenth-century London found itself in the position of a prominent world capital, the city faced problems of overcrowding, high poverty, and waves of epidemics, making the dead progressively more visible in public spheres of society. This thesis examines different forms of publicly-spectated death in Victorian London, moving from anatomical dissections to funerals to burials, following the Victorian corpse in these moments of dealing with the dead and the level of media involvement in structuring and marketing each of these spectacles to the public. While the current historiographical debate surrounding spectacles of death in nineteenth-century Europe agrees that death …
Grotesque, Bodily, And Hydrous: The Liminal Landscapes Of The Underworld In Homer, Virgil, And Dante, Sophia Zandi
Grotesque, Bodily, And Hydrous: The Liminal Landscapes Of The Underworld In Homer, Virgil, And Dante, Sophia Zandi
Honors Papers
This paper traces the liminal hydro-geologies of the Underworld through the works of Homer, Virgil, and Dante with the intention of understanding the Western Underworld as an ecosemiosphere—a mythological place with a close reciprocity to a physical environment. I focus on the entrances and margins of the infernal realm, the places where myth and world merge most intensely. Located in the fluid interspace between the world and the Underworld, this project is fundamentally about permeable boundaries. Particularly because of the boundary-crossing nature of fluids, water guides this journey into the margins of the nether realm. The infernal realm is accessible …
From Transnormativity To Self-Authenticity: Shifting Away From A Dysphoria-Centered Approach To Transgender Identity, Matty Lavalley
From Transnormativity To Self-Authenticity: Shifting Away From A Dysphoria-Centered Approach To Transgender Identity, Matty Lavalley
Honors Papers
"Transnormativity" is a social ideology concerning the validity and perceived "realness" of transgender individuals and identities. In this thesis, I investigate current transgender issues through the lens of transgender medicalization and its resulting sociocultural impacts, prioritizing trans identities and individuals that surpass binary categorizations. Under transnormativity, nonbinary gender identity is continually made invisible and unintelligible in both popular and trans discourse, however, nonbinary users of social media find creative means to express their authentic sense of self nonetheless. The resulting implications of such work to socially, culturally, and psychologically resist and deconstruct transnormativity.
Intellectual Property Through A Non-Western Lens: Patents In Islamic Law, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim
Intellectual Property Through A Non-Western Lens: Patents In Islamic Law, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim
Faculty Scholarship
The intersection of secular, Western intellectual property law and Islamic law is undertheorized in legal scholarship. Yet the nascent and developing non-Western law of one form of intellectual property—patents—in Islamic legal systems is profoundly important for transformational innovation and economic development initiatives of Muslim-majority countries that comprise nearly one-fifth of the world’s population.
Recent scholarship highlights the tensions of intellectual property in Islamic law because religious considerations in an Islamic society do not fully align with Western notions of patents. As Islamic legal systems have begun to embrace patents in recent decades, theories of patents have presented conceptual and theological …

Soil Moisture And Porosity Affects The Abundance And Distribution Of Ageratum Houstonianum, Sahar Fattani, Christabel-Anne Forka, Monique Garcia, Thao Huynh, Torre Merricks, Morgan Robinson, Charcacia Sanders
Pursue: Undergraduate Research Journal
Introduction: Ageratum houstonianum is an herbaceous, drought-tolerant plant also known as Blue billygoat weed. It grows well in drained soil and shaded areas. Soil moisture and porosity are two abiotic factors that affect the abundance and distribution of A. houstonianum. An ideal condition for plants to grow includes a greater amount of soil moisture and porosity. Higher porosity would mean that there is a greater number of pores, which would result in more significant plant nutrients because of its ability to retain more water. The purpose of this research was to see how soil moisture and porosity based on …

The Negativity Bias, Revisited: Evidence From Neuroscience Measures And An Individual Differences Approach, Catherine Norris
The Negativity Bias, Revisited: Evidence From Neuroscience Measures And An Individual Differences Approach, Catherine Norris
Psychology Faculty Works
Past research has provided support for the existence of a negativity bias, the tendency for negativity to have a stronger impact than positivity. Theoretically, the negativity bias provides an evolutionary advantage, as it is more critical for survival to avoid a harmful stimulus than to pursue a potentially helpful one. The current paper reviews the theoretical grounding of the negativity bias in the Evaluative Space Model, and presents recent findings using a multilevel approach that further elucidate the mechanisms underlying the negativity bias and underscore the importance of the negativity bias for human functioning.

Assessment Of Work-Related Feelings Among Teachers Within The United States And Jordan, Shahed Obeidat
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Human personalities combined with working conditions affect how employees react to different work situations. Personality and work environment have also been shown to affect workers' feelings. Employees' psychological health plays an essential role in their performance and productivity in the workplace, and organizational awareness of work-related feelings has sparked interest in investigating this field of study. Teaching is a stressful job; however, research evaluating discrete states of work-related emotions in teachers remains somewhat limited. This study investigated the effects of job demands on teachers' work-related feelings within middle and high schools in the United States and Jordan. The study results …
Reclaiming The Long History Of The "Irrelevant" Nineteenth Amendment, Tracy A. Thomas
Reclaiming The Long History Of The "Irrelevant" Nineteenth Amendment, Tracy A. Thomas
Akron Law Faculty Publications
The Nineteenth Amendment has been called an “irrelevant” amendment. The women’s suffrage amendment has been deemed insignificant as a constitutional authority, reduced to a historical footnote. In the Supreme Court canon, it has been diminished as a text that “merely gives the vote to women.” With the accomplishment of that simple task, the amendment has been assumed to offer little guidance to modern constitutional analysis or gender equality. The Nineteenth Amendment has become a “constitutional orphan,” disconnected from its historical origins and precedential place in constitutional jurisprudence. This constricting view of the Nineteenth Amendment ignores the structural implications and significant …
Influence Of Iceberg-Discharge Events On The Climate And Circulation Of The Central North Atlantic Ocean During The Last Glaciation, Ava Mcilvaine
Influence Of Iceberg-Discharge Events On The Climate And Circulation Of The Central North Atlantic Ocean During The Last Glaciation, Ava Mcilvaine
Scripps Senior Theses
The repeated occurrence of episodic iceberg-discharge events and abrupt climate change in the North Atlantic Ocean is well-documented for the late Quaternary period. However, much of the evidence for these periods known as Heinrich Events comes from the subpolar region, where deposition can be dominated by ice-rafted debris (IRD) and overwhelm other oceanographic and climatic indicators. Thus, the following analysis of coarse sediment from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Core Site U1313 (41°0.0'N, 32°57.42'W) evaluated ocean cooling related to ice-rafting, water mass migration, and climate change over the approximate last 100,000 years. Site U1313 is located near the North Atlantic …

Summer Treatment Programs: Counselors And Care Practices, Christina X. You
Scripps Senior Theses
Employing a mixed psychosocial and pharmacological approach, STPs offer six to nine weeks of intensive treatment for children deemed to have social and behavioral difficulties. One major asset STPs claim is their natural, fun setting—a true summer camp space for activities and open peer interaction—in which children learn positive behaviors that they can generalize into external social settings. Yet STPs are also highly structured. Staff, who are often undergraduate and graduate students, are trained in operant learning strategies to promote “positive” and suppress “maladaptive” behaviors, strict activity guidelines, and evaluations for procedural adherence. The program was developed based on the …

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Cluster Analysis Differentiating Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors Of Children, Alexandria Capolino
Open Access Master's Theses
While decades of research have identified an association between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), minimal research focuses on differentiating the two phenomena. This can make assessing and treating symptoms of ADHD and exposure to childhood trauma a challenging and confusing process. The present study used cluster analysis to determine children’s behavior profiles based on internalizing and externalizing behaviors at age nine and examined whether these behavioral profiles differentiate the following four groups of children: children not exposed to ACEs or who were exposed to a low number of ACEs and indicate little to no ADHD …

Scholarly Works
When invited to write an essay on clinical legal education honoring our friend, we were struck by the importance of a focus on clinical legal education in any collection of work paying tribute to Professor Deborah Jones Merritt. Legal education has benefited from a fifty-year movement for clinical education. This movement necessarily interrogates and seeks to overcome the anachronistic, inherited Langdellian paradigm that dominates and continues to define the curricula and policies of our law schools. But the movement for clinical education has been exponentially confounded by contemporary legal education’s shape as a pyramid of statuses and privileges accumulated over …

Biodiversity is increasingly threatened by anthropogenic disturbance globally. Information on the status of species and their response to changing environments is required to determine mitigation strategies before range contractions, population declines, or extinctions occur. Madagascar is a renowned biodiversity hotspot, comprising some of the highest levels of floral and faunal endemism in the world. Madagascar is also home to the most understudied family of carnivorans in the world, Eupleridae. Eupleridae is comprised of eight unique species that we currently lack fundamental knowledge about yet are of high conservation concern. Madagascar has experienced intense landscape changes from human expansion and resource …

Hybridization Between A Native Lizard (Anolis Carolinensis) And A Cryptic Invader (A. Porcatus) Across An Urban Landscape, Tyler B. Devos
Open Access Master's Theses
Invasive species impact native biota through competition, predation, and habitat alteration but can also transform native populations through hybridization. Outcomes of such hybridization events are variable and may result in the formation of a stable hybrid tension zone, extinction of one parental species via genetic swamping, hybrid speciation, or adaptive introgression. Hybrid population dynamics are further complicated by anthropogenic habitat disturbance, which has been shown to influence patterns of admixture and introgression between native and invasive species. Hybridization between the native lizard Anolis carolinensis and a morphologically similar invader (A. porcatus) in South Miami, Florida provides an ideal …
