Systemic inflammation may increase risk for prostate cancer progression, but the role it plays in prostate cancer susceptibility is unknown. From a cohort of over 10,000 men who had either a prostate biopsy or transurethral resection that yielded a benign finding, we analyzed 517 incident prostate cancer cases identified during follow-up and 373 controls with one or more white blood cell tests during a follow-up period between one and 18 years. Multilevel, multivariable longitudinal models were fit to two measures of systemic inflammation, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), to determine NLR and MLR trajectories associated with increased risk …
Aquatic Macrophyte Communities In Five Sibley County (Minnesota) Lakes And The Factors That Affect Their Distribution, Samuel A. Schmid
Aquatic Macrophyte Communities In Five Sibley County (Minnesota) Lakes And The Factors That Affect Their Distribution, Samuel A. Schmid
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The purposes of this study are to 1) quantify the shifts in the macrophyte community structure of five lakes in Sibley County, and 2) to assess the relationships between the macrophyte communities and abiotic factors in these five lakes. In both the early and late growing season of 2019, point-intercept surveys were conducted on High Island Lake, Titlow Lake, Schilling Lake, Silver Lake, and Clear Lake. At each point, water depth was recorded, and all macrophytes sampled were identified and recorded as “present.” There was not a late season survey conducted for High Island Lake in 2019 due to a …
Sexual Assault In The News, Sydney Blair
Sexual Assault In The News, Sydney Blair
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Previous research has evaluated the presence of blame, myths, and stigma that sexual assault survivors experience online and within interactions with others. In the era of the #MeToo movement, has that changed? With perpetrators recently being held legally accountable for their crimes, my research addresses the current representation(s) of sexual assault through a content analysis of existing news media. I found a variety of rhetoric that supports survivors, #MeToo and perpetrators accountability, with additional evidence that negatively counters those positive changes. My research is important because these findings contribute to social science literature by examining the current representation of sexual …
Mediating The German Case System Through Concept-Based Instruction In An Online Learning Environment, Lea Pienkoss
Mediating The German Case System Through Concept-Based Instruction In An Online Learning Environment, Lea Pienkoss
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The English language clarifies the role of nouns through sentence structures, something German does through a case system consisting of four cases that are dependent on gender, form, and quantity (Stocker & Young, 2012). This complexity of the concept of cases often results in difficulties German language learners encounter when identifying and producing the correct forms in the new language. Thus, Ritterbusch et al. (2006) suggested teaching the case system concept-based, allowing a holistic understanding of the cases and their meaning. This case study reacts to the call to action by developing and analyzing the teaching of the meaning of …
A Dozen To One: An Examination Of Workers' Satisfaction In Menial Labor, Colin Larter
A Dozen To One: An Examination Of Workers' Satisfaction In Menial Labor, Colin Larter
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This mixed-methods study explores the workplace experiences and employee satisfaction of menial laborers. Using an anonymous online survey, this thesis examines workers’ experiences through the lens of K. Marx’s and M. Seeman’s forms of alienation. From the perspective that part of general satisfaction comes from the differences between what an employee value and what they actually perceive at their job, this study found quantitative evidence of the relationships between the need for pride in work and satisfaction. In the data analysis, satisfaction’s predictability is measure both by the perceived experiences of workers but also in the difference in those perceived …
Effects Of Voluntary Exercise On Pressure-Induced Natriuresis In Hypertensive Female And Male Rats, Keshari Sudasinghe
Effects Of Voluntary Exercise On Pressure-Induced Natriuresis In Hypertensive Female And Male Rats, Keshari Sudasinghe
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Hypertension (HT) is one of the major diseases associated with the circulatory system and remains a public health problem with a high rate of prevalence in the adult population in the USA. The pressure natriuresis mechanism which is Na+ excretion in respond to rise in blood pressure acts as a long-term regulator of arterial blood pressure. Recent studies have demonstrated that impairment of this long-term pressure natriuresis mechanism is involved in hypertension (HT) and many other renal disorders. Exercise is a nonpharmacological treatment to help control HT, and exercise has a beneficial effect on vascular health, endothelial functions, arterial stiffness, …
Peoples’ Experiences With Birth Doulas, Emily A. Gunderson
Peoples’ Experiences With Birth Doulas, Emily A. Gunderson
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Birth doulas, as a non-medical resource for people going through the birthing process, have seen overall positive reception by providing a service otherwise missing from the recently medicalized birth environment (Gruber et al. 2013, Steel et al. 2015); this coincides with a time when fathers are being asked to play a more active role in their child’s birth (Coltrane 1996, Odent 2009). However, while we know a little about how mothers experience the services of a birth doula and how fathers experience birth generally, we have yet to find out how birthing people, both partnered and un-partnered, make sense of …
The Evaluation Of An Amino Acid- Oral Re-Hydration Solution (Enterade®) To Improve Quality Of Life In Solid Tumor Cancer Patients By Reduction Of Chemotherapy Related Diarrhea, Holly Chitwood
DNP Projects
Background: Chemotherapy related diarrhea (CRD) is a common adverse effect of many chemotherapy agents used to treat cancer. CRD negatively affects quality of life (QOL) for cancer patients and often results in treatment delays, hold, dose reductions, and hospitalizations affecting morbidity and mortality. Proper management of CRD with novel therapeutics is needed to improve the quality of life and patient outcomes for this population.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a proprietary amino acid-oral rehydration solution (AA-ORS) known as Enterade® to reduce the severity of CRD, to improve patient reported QOL among patients over …
Secular Trends In Low Birth Weight And Preterm Birth Disparity Between Infants Born To Teenage And Adult Mothers: An Exploratory Analysis, Elizabeth Edwards
Secular Trends In Low Birth Weight And Preterm Birth Disparity Between Infants Born To Teenage And Adult Mothers: An Exploratory Analysis, Elizabeth Edwards
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Introduction. Increased risk of preterm birth and low birthweight for infants born to teenage mothers (15-19), when compared to infants born to adult mothers (20-29), is well documented in the United States. Trends in preterm birth and low birthweight are also well documented over time. Examination of the difference in incidence of preterm birth or low birthweight between infants born to teenage mothers and to adult mothers over time is not present in the literature. This study aimed to fill this gap in the literature and determine how preterm birth and low birthweight differences have changed over time.

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. Historically, the Appalachian region of Kentucky has experienced disparities in colorectal cancer screening and survival as compared to both the non-Appalachian region of the state and the United States. The aim of this paper is to investigate the differences in cancer staging and survival after diagnosis in Appalachian and non-Appalachian Kentuckians. The present time period of study is a retrospective, population-based cohort with data taken from the Kentucky Cancer Registry. Binomial logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios …
A Transnational Law Of The Sea, Josh Martin
A Transnational Law Of The Sea, Josh Martin
Chicago Journal of International Law
It is widely accepted that we are presently struggling to govern the vast expanse of the ocean effectively. This Article finally gets to the real cause of much of the failures of the law of the sea: Westphalian sovereignty. In particular, it evidences that certain features of our obstinate model of public international law—such as sovereign exclusivity, equality, and territoriality—can be linked with a large majority of the governance “gaps” in the global ocean context. It thereby exonerates the falsely accused Grotius’s mare liberum doctrine and flag state regulation, which both still continue to receive an unmerited level of condemnation. …
The Legal Man In The Moon: Exploring Environmental Personhood For Celestial Bodies, William B. Altabef
The Legal Man In The Moon: Exploring Environmental Personhood For Celestial Bodies, William B. Altabef
Chicago Journal of International Law
The rise of the commercial space industry endangers the preservation of environments, such as the lunar surface and other celestial bodies, with the threat of contamination and resource exploitation. In the coming decades, flights to space will become commonplace—but at present, there is no way to hold outer space polluters accountable. The existing international legal regime is weak, with the United Nations’ space treaties offering limited enforcement mechanisms against offenders. The increasingly popular concept of environmental personhood offers a solution by rethinking the meaning of a juridical person within the text of the United Nations Outer Space, Space Liability, and …

Family and Community Medicine Faculty Publications
Nicotine, the primary addictive substance in tobacco, is widely abused. Relapse to cues associated with nicotine results in increased glutamate release within nucleus accumbens core (NAcore), modifying synaptic plasticity of medium spiny neurons (MSNs), which contributes to reinstatement of nicotine seeking. However, the role of cholinergic interneurons (ChIs) within the NAcore in mediating these neurobehavioral processes is unknown. ChIs represent less than 1% of the accumbens neuronal population and are activated during drug seeking and reward-predicting events. Thus, we hypothesized that ChIs may play a significant role in mediating glutamatergic plasticity that underlies nicotine-seeking behavior. Using chemogenetics in transgenic rats …
Characteristics Of Wild Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Vocalizations In Different Sized Groups, Emily Garcia
Characteristics Of Wild Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Vocalizations In Different Sized Groups, Emily Garcia
Theses & ETDs
Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) are semi-social animals that are most often found in groups. They produce generally tonal, short vocalizations that vary in structure and temporal characteristics based on age, sex, and activity. In this study, the frequency and temporal characteristics of Florida manatee vocalizations found alone or in groups of various sizes were compared. These vocalizations were recorded via digital acoustic tags deployed on wild manatees in Florida. Eleven tagged manatees and nearby manatee conspecifics were recorded in the southwest region of Florida. High-quality vocalizations (n = 225) that were considered ‘clean’ with a minimum signal-to-noise ratio of …
Post-Liquefaction Residual Strength Of Saturated And Partially Saturated Soils, Ian Douglas Gates
Post-Liquefaction Residual Strength Of Saturated And Partially Saturated Soils, Ian Douglas Gates
Master's Theses and Capstones
Post-liquefaction response and residual strength play important roles in stability assessment of liquefied ground. Considering the recent advancements in application of induced partial saturation for liquefaction mitigation, the state of knowledge in estimating the residual strength should be extended for liquefied desaturated soils. In this thesis, the residual strength response of a clean sand at different saturation levels was investigated using a Ring Shear Device (RSD). Direct air injection was used to desaturate the soil, which helped mitigating the liquefaction under cyclic loading. However, by raising the shear strain level, both saturated and partially saturated soils were liquefied followed by …

Nature’S Awakening Agents: The Relationship Between Classic Psychedelics, Mystical Experience, And The Increase Of Nature-Relatedness, Alexandra Mars
Theses & ETDs
The recent revival of psychedelic research has revealed that classic psychedelics (LSD, Psilocybin, DMT, and Mescaline) have the potential to increase nature-relatedness during and after receiving the substance, particularly when the recipient has a mystical experience during the session. This thesis is an assessment of classic psychedelics and psychedelic triggered mystical experience as a means to increase long term connection with nature and environmental lifestyle change. This will be executed through the examination of prehistoric to modern use of classic psychedelics, their profound effects, recent research and qualitative interviews with individuals. In the interviews, 90% of the participants mentioned nature …

How Bavinck Responds To The Challenges Of The Theory Of Evolution: The Primacy Of Biblical Revelation, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa
How Bavinck Responds To The Challenges Of The Theory Of Evolution: The Primacy Of Biblical Revelation, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa
CTS Student Publications and Creative Works
In his discussion of evolution, Bavinck offers a modified theory of development, rooted not under a mechanistic and naturalistic worldview, as Darwin does, but under a “theistic-friendly” framework. This article argues that Bavinck’s discussion of evolution as a whole endorses a modified Aristotelian/ Thomistic framework in order to understand the theory of development, and thus overcomes the challenges raised by Darwin’s naturalistic worldview to biblical revelation.

Neuronal networks vary dramatically in size, connectivity structure, and functionality across downstream layers of the brain. This raises the question of whether information is lost as it is re-encoded along compressive and expansive pathways. In this work, we develop a potential data-driven mechanism for the preservation of information in the activity of neuronal networks across downstream layers, which uses the widespread linearity of individual neuronal responses to sufficiently strong ramped artificial inputs to fit a linear input-output mapping across the network. We analyze the dynamics of several families of two-layer neuronal network models, where the input components far outnumber the …

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate And The Racial Multiplier: Clinical Implications And Current Attitudes, Brittney A. Spooner
Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate And The Racial Multiplier: Clinical Implications And Current Attitudes, Brittney A. Spooner
Honors Theses and Capstones
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with high morbidity and mortality and has high and increasing incidence worldwide. CKD is characterized by a reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), but as GFR is difficult to measure directly, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) equations have been created to measure serum creatinine levels as a function of GFR. Some eGFR equations contain a racial multiplier that increases the eGFR of black patients, causing a spurious increase in reported kidney function. This study included a literature search that collected information on the rationale behind the multipliers usage and a survey that gathered information …

Integrating Environmental Protection Into Asean Trading System, Kittinut Supsoontornkul
Integrating Environmental Protection Into Asean Trading System, Kittinut Supsoontornkul
Dissertations & Theses
Integrating environmental protection into ASEAN trading system is pivotal for ensuring long-term economic development and environmental sustainability. Due to its resource-based economy, ASEAN's economic performance highly depends on the sustainable condition of the environment. The ASEAN approach prioritizing economic growth without environmental consideration leads to environmental degradation and economic loss. Many transboundary environmental problems in ASEAN result from unsustainable production methods aiming to maximize advantages in trade competition. There are growing international efforts in addressing production and process methods as a part of the sustainable development goal. Major trading partners of ASEAN increasingly employ unilateral environmental trade measures and environmental …
Evaluation Of Methods For The Restoration Of Native Grasslands On Abandoned Center Pivots In The Sandsage Prairies Of Southwestern Kansas, Alonso Barragan-Martinez
Evaluation Of Methods For The Restoration Of Native Grasslands On Abandoned Center Pivots In The Sandsage Prairies Of Southwestern Kansas, Alonso Barragan-Martinez
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Throughout southwestern Kansas thousands of acres of native grassland have been converted to cropland for agricultural use, reducing native prairie by over 60% in the sandsage prairie. Due to low precipitation and arid conditions, much of these croplands are irrigated by center pivot irrigation systems fed by the Ogallala Aquifer. These fields are abandoned when the aquifers dry up, resulting in erosion of the unused farmland. Conservation programs such as the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) were established to address this problem but have been unsuccessful in restoring native grasslands in abandoned croplands in southwestern Kansas. We hypothesized that insect …
Acquitted Or Confined: The Impact Of Jury Instruction, Biological Sex Of Mock-Juror, And Defendant Mental Illness On Insanity Defense Attitudes And Verdict Outcomes, Haley Moon
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Approximately 20% of incarcerated individuals in jails and 15% of those in state prisons have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness, meaning that there are approximately 356,000 incarcerated persons with serious mental illness in jails and prisons alone (Torrey et al., 2014). Today, mental health stigma is widely prevalent amongst society and particularly there is a strong stigma associated with mental illness and criminality (Maeder & Mossière, 2015). Thus, when mental illness is present in criminal court cases, there is the potentiality of those stigmatic views impacting verdict outcomes accommodating for mental illness (e.g., Not Guilty by Reason of …
