Biopolitics' New Iteration: Gay Men, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis And The Pharmaco-Pornographic Imagination, Rory David Crath, J. Cristian Rangel, Adam Gaubinger
Biopolitics' New Iteration: Gay Men, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis And The Pharmaco-Pornographic Imagination, Rory David Crath, J. Cristian Rangel, Adam Gaubinger
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
This article builds upon Paul Preciado’s conceptualisation of pharmaco-pornographic power to understand the ongoing affects and effects of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) on queer men’s sexual socialities and subjectivities. Drawing from a new-materialist epistemology, we analyze data from a sexual health pilot study in NYC to trace the techno-sexual health assemblages forming in queer life worlds. Our analysis suggests that these assemblages, entangling PrEP and other pharmacological substances, pornographic imaginaries together with mediatic technologies and public health rationalties, are creating paradoxical desires and practices of intimacy that are both normative and exceed rational health-actor logics and normative understandings of risk. These …
Menstruation And The Bar Exam: Unconstitutional Tampon Bans, Bridget J. Crawford
Menstruation And The Bar Exam: Unconstitutional Tampon Bans, Bridget J. Crawford
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Some states have policies that prevent bar exam candidates from bringing their own menstrual products to the test. Via social media, awareness of these policies achieved new heights in the weeks leading up to the July 2020 bar exam. While states adopted different approaches to administering the bar exam during the COVID-19 pandemic, a small number of jurisdictions responded to public criticism by permitting test-takers to bring menstrual products with them to exams. Not all states have adopted permissive policies, however. This essay explains why outright bans on menstrual products at the bar exam likely are unconstitutional. So-called alternate policies, …

Compared To What? Menstruation, Pregnancy, And The Complexities Of Comparison, Emily Gold Waldman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
When crafting a sex discrimination argument, finding the right comparison can be crucial. Indeed, comparison-drawing has been a key strategy for advocates challenging the constitutionality of the tampon tax. In their 2016 lawsuit challenging New York’s tampon tax, the plaintiffs alleged that the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance had imposed a “double standard” when deciding which products would be considered tax-free medical items and which would not. Similar arguments were made in the subsequent challenge to Florida's tampon tax. In both cases, the arguments had powerful rhetorical force, helping to effectuate legislative repeal of the tampon taxes …
How To End Our Stories: A Study Of The Perspectives Of Seniors On Dementia And Decision-Making, James Toomey
How To End Our Stories: A Study Of The Perspectives Of Seniors On Dementia And Decision-Making, James Toomey
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Because dementia can cause individuals to make decisions that they otherwise would not, the law needs a mechanism to determine which decisions are entitled to the respect of the legal system and which may be overridden by others. In the philosophical literature, three primary theories for how to make this determination have been offered. First, "Cognitivism" posits that whether a decision should be recognized is a function of the mechanical functioning of the individual's brain at the time the decision is made. Second, "Essentialism" holds that decisions should be recognized so long as they are consistent with the cluster of …
Wills Formalities In Post-Pandemic World: A Research Agenda, Bridget J. Crawford, Kelly Purser, Tina Cockburn
Wills Formalities In Post-Pandemic World: A Research Agenda, Bridget J. Crawford, Kelly Purser, Tina Cockburn
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 global pandemic has brought new focus to human mortality. The virus has reminded many people that they need to have a valid will or otherwise make plans for the effective transmission of their property on death. Yet stay-at-home orders and social distancing recommendations make it difficult or impossible to comply with the traditional rules for validly executing wills. Across most common law jurisdictions, the traditional requirements call for two witnesses in the physical presence of the testator. Because of the practical difficulties of safely executing documents during the pandemic with witnesses assembled in physical proximity, many jurisdictions internationally …

Teaching With Feminist Judgments, Bridget J. Crawford, Kathryn M. Stanchi, Linda L. Berger
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This chapter, part of Integrating Doctrine and Diversity: Inclusion and Equity in the Law School Classroom (Carolina Academic Press 2021), provides an overview of the U.S. Feminist Judgments Project, a collaboration of feminist scholars and lawyers who rewrite significant judicial opinions using feminist methods and reasoning. One of the primary goals of the series of Feminist Judgments books is to demonstrate that the law has a vast, but often unrealized, potential for social justice. The feminist judgment methodology requires the authors of rewritten opinions to act as judges in following the rules of precedent and custom—and to be bound by …
In The Eyes Of The Beholder: Rapid Body Color Change Provides Facultative Crypsis In A Lizard, Kelly Wuthrich, Amber Morgan
In The Eyes Of The Beholder: Rapid Body Color Change Provides Facultative Crypsis In A Lizard, Kelly Wuthrich, Amber Morgan
Research Days Posters 2021
Camouflage is an important component of antipredator behaviors. In many species, rapid color change provides plasticity in camouflage as animals move through their environments. As rapid color change can also play a role in other aspects of behavior such as territory defense and courtship, an experimental approach is required to determine color change’s function. In the Anolis genus, rapid color change is a signal in social interactions, but why color changes as anoles move through different microhabitats is not well explored. Anolis aquaticus has a rapid dark-to-light color change with an unknown function. We tested the hypothesis that A. aquaticus …

Do Biogeographical Patterns In Morphological Traits Of Insect Host And Parasitoid Wasp Communities Contribute To Ecological Release Of A Range-Expanding Host Via Trait Mismatching?, Kelly Mcgourty, Dylan Jones, Haley Hurst, Sarah Martin, Catherine Ruis
Research Days Posters 2021
Climate change is causing species to expand their ranges poleward into new locations. As species move, they will lose interactions with species that fail to follow and gain new interactions with species with which they are not coevolved or coadapted. As a result, one common outcome for range expansions is that species outbreak in their expanded ranges in response to altered antagonistic interactions (“ecological release”). Insect hosts have a suite of morphological adaptations to evade parasitoid enemies, and enemies have adaptations to effectively attack hosts. Here, we study a recent range expansion of an insect host. Neuroterus saltatorius (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) …

Research Days Posters 2021
Poker is a high-stakes game involving a deceptive strategy called bluffing and is an ideal research subject for improving high-stakes deception detection (HSDD) techniques like those used by interrogators. Multiple HSDD studies involve staged scenarios in controlled settings with subjects who were told to lie. Scenarios like staged interrogations are inherently poor data sources for HSDD because the subjects will naturally respond differently than someone who actually risks imprisonment, or in the case of poker, loses great sums of money. Thus, unstaged data is a necessity. Unlike traditional HSDD methods involving invasive measurement of biometric data, using video footage of …

Biogeographical Patterns In Oak Gall Wasp-Parasitoid Communities Associated With Oregon White Oak, Quercus Garryana, Under Anthropogenic Change, Rachel Chen, Dylan G. Jones, Aly Milks
Research Days Posters 2021
Species are expanding their ranges poleward as a consequence of global climate change. However, natural enemies may lag behind range-expanding hosts, facilitating “ecological release.” A species that has experienced a recent poleward range expansion is Neuroterus saltatorius, an oak gall wasp (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) that expanded its range from mainland western North America to Vancouver Island, BC. In its expanded range, it is threatening oak savanna ecosystems. This species induces gall structures on its host plant, Quercus garryana. Parasitoid wasps are attracted to galls and feed on developing insects in galls, acting as population control agents. We examine how interactions with …
Is Mitochondrial Recombination A Source Of Reproductive Barriers?, Gabrielle Mcmillan
Is Mitochondrial Recombination A Source Of Reproductive Barriers?, Gabrielle Mcmillan
Research Days Posters 2021
In fungi and some plants, mitochondrial DNAs are biparentally inherited and can recombine to create novel mtDNAs. When Saccharomyces yeast hybridize, either a parental or recombinant mtDNA is inherited but the fitness effects of this is not understood. The mtDNAs from S. paradoxus have two distinct gene orders, one similar to S. cerevisiae mtDNAs and one unique. Our hypothesis is that recombination between mtDNAs with different gene orders will be more likely to produce recombinant mtDNAs that lack important regions and therefore will have lower fitness. I will test this by performing controlled crosses and evaluating mtDNA inheritance and hybrid …

The Role Of Apparent Competition In Facilitating Ecological Release Of A Range-Expanding Insect, Serena Feldman, Rachel Chen, Aly Milks, Dylan Jones, Leslie Huang, Jenna Ross, Lilly Griffen, Will Smisko
Research Days Posters 2021
Due to anthropogenic climate change, species are expanding their historical natural ranges. However, interacting species will not shift synchronously and range-expanding species are likely to lose interactions and pick up novel ones in their expanded range. If antagonistic interactions, such as with competitors or enemies are lost, range-expanding species may experience “ecological release” and have impacts in their expanded range. Of the parasitoid wasps that attack phytophagous insects, some are specialists and some are generalists attacking alternative hosts (competitors). Range-expanding species may lose enemies if their specialists fail to follow from their native range and if generalist enemies fail to …
Targeted Delivery Of Tlr-Agonists Using Adc Technology, Brittany Brems, Emmanuel Olawode, Siteng Fang
Targeted Delivery Of Tlr-Agonists Using Adc Technology, Brittany Brems, Emmanuel Olawode, Siteng Fang
Research Days Posters 2021
Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are a method of targeted drug delivery that transport a payload to a desired cell type. By directly targeting the cell type of choice, off-target effects experienced by non-diseased cells can be mitigated. Currently, the majority of clinical-stage ADCs are directed to tumor cells and contain a cytotoxic payload. In contrast, this work focuses on the design and evaluation of ADCs that deliver Toll-Like Receptor (TLR)-7/8 agonists to B-cells. TLR-7/8 agonists activate an intracellular cytosolic receptor that leads to the activation of NFκB, which results in the production of proinflammatory cytokines. This forms a link between the …
Inferring The “Meaning” Of Wing-Tail Flicking Behavior In American Crows, Avree Kestay, Aardash Devkota
Inferring The “Meaning” Of Wing-Tail Flicking Behavior In American Crows, Avree Kestay, Aardash Devkota
Research Days Posters 2021
Wing and tail flicking is observed in many bird species, but the interpretation of this behavior ranges from signaling aggression to reflecting fear. In American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos), wing-tail flicking (WTF) may reflect unease and may even be a signal to other birds. We report the first quantitative analysis of wing-tail flicking by crows with respect to its use by context and identity of the crow. We analyzed pre-recorded videos from other experiments exposing crows to novel objects, both on territory and at a group foraging site. WTF was recorded quantitatively (scale of intensity 1-3 and rates/min), along with context …
Urban And Rural Riparian Forests: Coleoptera Communities And Soil Characteristics, Amanda Sprague-Getsy, Vashti Mahadeo
Urban And Rural Riparian Forests: Coleoptera Communities And Soil Characteristics, Amanda Sprague-Getsy, Vashti Mahadeo
Research Days Posters 2021
Urbanization has been shown to be detrimental to ecosystems and to negatively impact ecosystem services and biodiversity, contributing to biological homogenization. This study focused on Coleoptera communities and soil characteristics (pH and conductivity) in urban and rural riparian forests, which are streamside forests that serve as transitional zones between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Urbanization in these areas can lead to habitat loss, increased pollution, excess nutrients, and altered hydrology. Beetles (order Coleoptera) in these ecosystems can be affected by urbanization and preserving their biodiversity is important since they provide essential services such as decomposition and nutrient cycling. In 2019, beetles …

Uncovering How Partner Interchangeably Affects Mutualistic Outcomes In A Species Complex Of Seed-Dispersing Ants, William Smisko, Carmela Buono
Research Days Posters 2021
Generalized mutualisms involve guilds of partners exchanging services with reciprocal fitness benefits. Partners within guilds vary in traits, affecting the quality of services and partner fitness. Research aimed at uncovering how partner interchangeability affects mutualistic outcomes largely considers variation in partner species identity. Aphaenogaster ants are mutualists, dispersing seeds of 30-40% of understory plants in North American forests that are adapted to dispersal by ants (myrmecochores). This dispersal by ants is highly specialized and disruptions due to climate change could greatly affect forest understory communities. Impacts such as changes in temperature could result in shifting functional ranges of species causing …
