Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"One skill that is integral to instruction centered around students’ thinking is attending to, interpreting, and responding to students’ thinking, a cluster of skills referred to as noticing (Luna & Sherin, 2017; Mason, 2002; Stroupe, 2014; Thompson et al., 2016). Video clubs, in which groups of teachers meet to analyze recordings of classroom practice, have been shown to be effective in supporting teachers in developing noticing of students’ ideas and adopting an interpretive lens to make sense of students’ ideas (Johnson & Mawyer, 2019; Luna & Sherin, 2017). However, simply gathering teachers together to analyze videos of teaching is not …

Unspoken Criticism: Audiovisual Forms Of Critique As Fair Use, Alec Fisher Jan 2021

Unspoken Criticism: Audiovisual Forms Of Critique As Fair Use, Alec Fisher

Kernochan Center for Law, Media, and the Arts

This Note argues that the traditional legal framework for analyzing a work of alleged criticism as fair use is particularly constraining for YouTube reaction videos and other audiovisual forms of criticism that largely critique or comment on an original work in a non-spoken, visual manner. It discusses the emphasis that the current fair use jurisprudence places on spoken and written critical elements when undertaking a fair use analysis of a work of criticism, then advocates for a new conception of fair use criticism that incorporates film-specific analytical techniques and concepts when analyzing the critical elements of online audiovisual works. Part …

The Influence Of Infant Formula On The Growth Of Commensal And Pathogenic Streptococcus Species In The Infant Oral Cavity, Geneva Waynick Jan 2021

The Influence Of Infant Formula On The Growth Of Commensal And Pathogenic Streptococcus Species In The Infant Oral Cavity, Geneva Waynick

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The oral microbiome is a complex community of microorganisms that can both reflect and greatly influence the health of the human host. A number of diseases are associated with dysbiotic oral microflora in infants and children, including dental (e.g. dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontal disease), and gastrointestinal diseases (e.g. pediatric appendicitis, celiac disease, and pediatric inflammatory bowel disease). A variety of factors can influence the composition of the oral microbial community in infants, including gestation length, mode of delivery, feeding method, and diet. This study focuses on the effects of diet on the growth of a commensal bacterium (Streptococcus …

Dietary Assessments And Their Association With Psychological Factors, Inflammation, And Cardiovascular Health Outcomes, Junghee Kang Jan 2021

Dietary Assessments And Their Association With Psychological Factors, Inflammation, And Cardiovascular Health Outcomes, Junghee Kang

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, are the leading cause of death worldwide, causing one-third of deaths each year. Diet is one of the most important behavioral risk factors for CVD. The effects of behavioral risk factors, such as diet, may lead to increased blood pressure, increased blood glucose, raised blood lipids, and overweight and obesity. Inflammation contributes to the development of CVD and can be influenced by diet. Dietary assessment indices can measure diet quality from an individual's dietary intake by scoring food and nutrient intakes. However, the mediation effects of diet …

Populist And Progressive Strands In American Constitutionalism, Louis Michael Seidman Jan 2021

Populist And Progressive Strands In American Constitutionalism, Louis Michael Seidman

Connecticut Law Review

Modern constitutional law can best be understood as the product of conflicting populist and progressive sensibilities with deep roots in the nation’s past. Populist and progressive versions of constitutional law stem from different versions of the corruption that the Constitution should address. For progressives, corruption consists of contamination of government expertise by ignorant and prejudiced mass opinion. In contrast, populists distrust rationalistic, elite opinion. The corruption they fear is elite government control that leads to the oppression of ordinary people by “their betters.” Progressive “civil liberties” focus on protection of government from mass hysteria and prejudice, while populist “civil liberties” …

Effects Of Salt Runoff On Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Colonies, Kendra Fink Jan 2021

Effects Of Salt Runoff On Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Colonies, Kendra Fink

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Aquatic macroinvertebrates bridge the gap in part between primary and secondary consumers, making them ecologically important for most aquatic systems. They are used as biotic indicators for water quality due to their sensitivity to pollutants and may be affected, specifically, by chloride ion concentrations in the water. Water quality can be evaluated by looking at species compositions and their respective tolerance values. To determine long-term effects of road salt on macroinvertebrate colonies, a total of 338 identified macroinvertebrates of 10 families (two generalized to class) at 9 sites were collected from before, after, and between three bridges on Turtle River …

Relationship Between Urinary Energy And Urinary Nitrogen Or Carbon Excretion In Lactating Jersey Cows, D. L. Morris, Jeffrey L. Firkins, C. Lee, W. P. Weiss, Paul J. Kononoff Jan 2021

Relationship Between Urinary Energy And Urinary Nitrogen Or Carbon Excretion In Lactating Jersey Cows, D. L. Morris, Jeffrey L. Firkins, C. Lee, W. P. Weiss, Paul J. Kononoff

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Measurement of urinary energy (UE) excretion is essential to determine metabolizable energy (ME) supply. Our objectives were to evaluate the accuracy of using urinary N (UN) or C (UC) to estimate UE and ultimately improve the accuracy of estimating ME. Individual animal data (n = 433) were used from 11 studies with Jersey cows at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where samples were analyzed after drying (n = 299) or on an as-is basis (n = 134). Dried samples resulted in greater estimated error variance compared with as-is samples, and thus only as-is samples were used for final models. The as-is …

Counting Chins To Count People: Determining Mni For Umm An-Nar Tombs From Mandibular Fragments, Chaylee Arellano, Quentin Burke, Lesley A. Gregoricka, Jaime M. Ullinger

Year 1: AAPA 2021 – virtual

Background: The Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BCE) was a time of rapid transformation within the Oman Peninsula, characterized by changes in mortuary practices, agriculture, and settlement. Located in the United Arab Emirates, Unar 1 (2400-2200 BCE) and Unar 2 (2300-2100 BCE) are two large Umm an-Nar tombs that held commingled, fragmented remains, posing a challenge in determining the minimum number of individuals (MNI). Based on the larger size of Unar 2, we hypothesized that the number of interred individuals would increase over time.

Methods: MNI was calculated using the zonation and landmark methods for the mandible. MNI and tomb size …

Effects Of Physical Activity On Physical Health, Cognition, And Activities Of Daily Living In Persons At Risk Of Alzheimer's Disease Or All-Cause Dementias, Trevon Hodge

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to summarize the effects of physical activity (PA) as a nonpharmacological preventative measure in people at risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) or all-cause dementia. It was hypothesized that persons at risk of AD or all-cause dementia who engage in sustained and continuous PA would fare better in terms of physical health, cognition, and activities of daily living (ADLs). A systematic literature review was conducted in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) using 12 keywords. Studies were included if they were randomized controlled trials with people at risk of AD or …

This manuscript will explore the intersection of perceived disability due to limb loss and self-identity. The research is centered around the work in the Limbitless Solutions laboratory, where clinical research is providing children with customized prostheses. This research applies a focus on how customization can lead to positive identity construction. By facilitating active engagement in the design process a stronger connection is formed between the participant and their prosthetic device.

Miocene-Pleistocene Diatom Oxygen Isotope And Biogenic Silica Record From Iodp Site U1523, Ross Sea, Antarctica, Donald James Mclennan Jan 2021

Miocene-Pleistocene Diatom Oxygen Isotope And Biogenic Silica Record From Iodp Site U1523, Ross Sea, Antarctica, Donald James Mclennan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) plays a significant role in Earth’s climate. WAIS is currently retreating due to changes in wind-driven oceanic currents resulting in an increasing flux of warm waters to ice margins. Brine rejection in the Ross Sea is also major source of High Salinity Shelf water (HSSW) and Antarctica Bottom Waters (AABW), which creates a stratified ocean and plays a significant role in regulating Earth’s climate. Currently, there are very limited proxies that can quantify the variable input of HSSW formation on geologic time scales. Here we provide a 18Odiatom and biogenic silica (BSi) record which …

Bridge Initiative for Science and Technology Policy, Leadership, and Communications

The waters of West Virginia are essential to the state’s economy. From the water we drink to the rivers where we play to businesses and industries that provide our income, clean water is an essential element for West Virginia’s future economic success. West Virginia’s water resources are also precious to the nation. The headwaters of the Potomac and Ohio Rivers, which eventually reach 9% of the U.S. population, include waters that originate in West Virginia. These resources provide for quality of life, community development and resiliency, and economic opportunity

Several related viral shell disorder (disorder of shell proteins of viruses) models were built using a disorder predictor via AI. The parent model detected the presence of high levels of disorder at the outer shell in viruses, for which vaccines are not available. Another model found correlations between inner shell disorder and viral virulence. A third model was able to positively correlate the levels of respiratory transmission of coronaviruses (CoVs). These models are linked together by the fact that they have uncovered two novel immune evading strategies employed by the various viruses. The first involve the use of highly disordered …

A Brief Zoom-Facilitated Mindful And Intuitive Eating Intervention To Decrease Disordered Eating, Jenna K. Anderson Jan 2021

A Brief Zoom-Facilitated Mindful And Intuitive Eating Intervention To Decrease Disordered Eating, Jenna K. Anderson

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Clinical eating disorders are psychological disorders that impact a small percentage of the population. In the United States, prevalence rates range from 2-8% with a point prevalence of 4.6% (Galmiche et al., 2019). Subclinical disordered eating is a broader term for eating patterns and behaviors that do not meet clinical threshold, but that still may be life impairing (Burnette & Mazzeo, 2020). Subclinical disordered eating impacts many more individuals than clinical eating disorders do and is often present without the direct awareness of the people affected by it. With the prominence of diet culture in the United States that supports …
