Health Experiences In The Lgbtq+ Community: An Ethnographic Analysis With Recommendations, Tyler Davis
Undergraduate Review
This article aims to share and raise awareness of LGBTQ+ realities in healthcare. It explores the reality of discrimination and disparities in healthcare faced by LGBTQ+ people and recommendations to work towards a system that recognizes the unique challenges and circumstances LGBTQ+ people face that are influenced by social and environmental factors. This article uses Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach (1979), as well as Martha Nussbaum’s revisions to that approach (2011), and Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory (1979) to analyze the experiences of participants who are LGBTQ and healthcare professionals. This article also uses Glynos and Howarth’s model of practices and …

Online crowdfunding can help address the perennial financial shortfalls in environmental conservation and management. Although many online crowdfunding campaigns fail to collect any funds due to not achieving their targets, little is known about what drives success. To address this knowledge gap, we applied a mixed-methods approach to data from 473 successful and failed campaigns hosted on the online crowdfunding platform Readyfor. We found that fundraising performance varied by topic, with campaigns on pet animal management outperforming those focussed on landscape management and sustainable use. We also found that marketing strategies associated with online findability and increased reach through social …

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)
The practices of strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches have been reported in various professional sports. This study aims to comprehensively assess this available evidence to help establish whether theoretical, practical, and evidence-based guidelines align with the practices employed by these experienced S&C coaches. Three databases were searched (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Cochrane) until November 2020. Studies surveying the practices of S&C coaches in professional sports using a survey design with common questions, written in English, and published in peer-reviewed journals were reviewed. Eight studies (n = 318 S&C coaches) were finally included. All studies adapted a similar survey, providing a strong …

Global and local anthropogenic stressors such as climate change, acidification, overfishing, and pollution are expected to shift the benthic community composition of coral reefs from dominance by calcifying organisms to dominance by non-calcifying algae. These changes could reduce the ability of coral reef ecosystems to maintain positive net calcium carbonate accretion. However, relationships between community composition and calcification rates remain unclear. We performed field experiments to quantify the metabolic rates of the two most dominant coral reef substrate types, live coral and dead coral substrate colonized by a mixed algal assemblage, using a novel underwater respirometer. Our results revealed that …
How Do We Learn To Hope? The Development Of The Parent Report Of Child Hope, Lauren A. Sparks
How Do We Learn To Hope? The Development Of The Parent Report Of Child Hope, Lauren A. Sparks
Wayne State University Dissertations
Hope has been shown to be an important protective factor, with hypothesized origins in early childhood (Snyder, 2002). However, despite the established importance of hope, little research to date has examined its developmental origins. Specifically, a lack of appropriate instrumentation represents a significant barrier to detecting hope in children under the age of eight years old. The current study meets this need by examining the reliability and validity of a novel parent-report measure of hope in early childhood, titled the Parent Report of Child Hope (PRCH). The PRCH represents an initial step towards understanding individual differences in early childhood hope. …

Obesity, a characteristic of metabolic syndrome, is also associated with chronic inflammation and the development of autoimmune diseases. However, the relationship between obesity and autoimmune diseases remains to be investigated in depth. Here, we compared hepatic gene expression profiles among high-fat diet (HFD) mice using the primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) mouse model based on the chronic expression of interferon gamma (IFNγ) (ARE-Del-/- mice). The top differentially expressed genes affected by upstream transcriptional regulators IFNγ, LPS, and TNFα displayed an overlap in HFD and ARE-Del-/- mice, indicating that obesity-induced liver inflammation may be dependent on signaling via IFNγ. The top pathways …

Natural Killer Cell Transcript 4 Promotes The Development Of Sjӧgren's Syndrome Via Activation Of Rap1 On B Cells, Peng Qu, Todd Wuest, Yongfen Min, Ilias Alevizos, Howard A. Young, P. Charles Lin
United States Public Health Resources
Autoimmune disorders are the third most common diseases in the United States, and affect the daily lives of millions of people. In this study, we analyzed patient samples, utilized a transgenic mouse model and human B cells to reveal Natural Killer Cell Transcript 4 (NK4) as a novel regulator that promotes the development of autoimmune disorders. NK4 was significantly elevated in samples from patients with Sjӧgren's Syndrome (SS). SS patients show elevated NK4 levels. There is a strong and positive correlation between the increased levels of NK4 and the duration of SS. Interestingly, transgenic expression of NK4 in a mouse …

Conclusion
As we learn the lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and start recovering and rebuilding, we have an opportunity to offer a more comprehensive, more fulfilling, and more inclusive vision of what constitutes public health. And for a generation of children facing unprecedented pressures and stresses, day in and day out, change can’t come soon enough.
It won’t come overnight. Many of the recommendations offered in this Advisory require structural buy-in and change.
But everyone has a role to play in combating this mental health pandemic. Without individual engagement, no amount of energy or resources can overcome the biggest barrier …

Amphiphilic Cell-Penetrating Peptides Containing Natural And Unnatural Amino Acids As Drug Delivery Tools And Antimicrobial Agents, David Salehi
Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses
Cell-penetrating peptides containing arginine as positively charged residues and tryptophan or diphenylalanine as hydrophobic residues were synthesized. The synthesis was accomplished through the Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis in the presence of HBTU and DIPEA. The side-chain protected linear peptides were cleaved from the resin and cyclized in the presence of DIC and HOAt in the solution phase overnight. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was used to characterize the peptides.
The cytotoxicity of the synthesized peptides was determined in CCRF-CEM (human, lymphoblast peripheral blood), and HEK-293 (human, embryonic epithelial kidney healthy) cells using the MTS assay. A concentration of 10 µM was found …

Abstract
This research is a case study of a 34-year-old patient that presented with a right breast lump measuring 1.9cm found to have invasive mammary carcinoma. Diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound were followed by ultrasound guided breast biopsy to make the diagnosis.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women between the ages of 15-39 inthe United States. Annual mammograms are recommended to begin at age 40, therefore younger women often do not have mammograms or breast ultrasounds unless they have symptoms. As a result, younger …

Multiparametric Quantitative Acoustic Imaging Of Cervical Remodeling During Pregnancy, Yan Yan
Multiparametric Quantitative Acoustic Imaging Of Cervical Remodeling During Pregnancy, Yan Yan
Wayne State University Dissertations
The uterine cervix plays a central role in the maintenance of pregnancy and the process of parturition. Untimely cervical ripening in early gestation predisposes to preterm labor and delivery, the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide. The current approach to evaluate the status of the cervix relies on digital and sonographic examination, which indicates the morphological changes of the cervix (cervical length). Therefore, assessing cervix tissue composition changes may provide more sensitive evaluations about cervix status beyond cervical length. Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a relatively new, non-invasive ultrasound (US) based technology that captures acoustic signals emitted by tissue components in …
Regression-Based Mediation Analysis: A Formula For The Bias Due To An Unobserved Precursor Variable, Steven B. Kim, Joonghak Lee
Regression-Based Mediation Analysis: A Formula For The Bias Due To An Unobserved Precursor Variable, Steven B. Kim, Joonghak Lee
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Researchers want to know whether the change in an explanatory variable X affects the change in a response variable Y (i.e., X causes Y). In practice, there can be two causal paths from X to Y, the path through a mediating variable M (indirect effect) and the path not through M (direct effect). The parameter estimation and hypothesis testing can be performed by a regression-based mediation model. It is already known that randomization of X is not enough for unbiased estimation, and the bias due to an unobserved variable has been discussed in literature but often overlooked. In …

Using Wavelet Coherence To Characterize Surface Water Infiltration Into A Low‐Lying Karst Aquifer, Philip Schuler, Èlia Cantoni, Léa Duran, Paul Johnston, Laurence Gill
KIP Articles
Karstified carbonate aquifers may receive significant recharge contributions from losing streams, hence, the knowledge about surface water‐groundwater (SW‐GW) interactions is crucial with regard to water management (e.g., source protection zone delineation). The dynamics of SW‐GW interactions may depend on factors such as the relative water levels between streams and aquifers, resulting in a temporal variation of exchange, which imposes complexity to the understanding of such dynamics. This study highlights the use of high‐resolution time series and multiresolution analysis to help to gain insights into such complex dynamics. Wavelet coherence is applied on hourly time series of rainfall, stream, and spring …
