Environmental Toxicant Trichloroethylene (Tce) Impacts Macrophage Function, Emily Schellenboom, Eleanor Scheeres, Ethan Houskamp, Rita Loch − Caruso, Sean Harris, Erica Boldenow
Summer Research
- Trichloroethylene (TCE) is an industrial solvent commonly used as a metal degreaser which accumulates as a toxicant in water and soil1
- There is little known about how environmental toxicants and infectious diseases (such as Group B Streptococcus) interact in pregnant women2
- Cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α are proinflammatory cytokines important to immune function2
- Previous studies have shown that DCVC, a metabolite of TCE, has immunosuppressive effects3
- This summer we sought to discover a more comprehensive picture of DCVC’s effects on immunosuppression in macrophage-like cells

Angiosarcoma is a rare cancer of blood vessel–forming cells with a high patient mortality and few treatment options. Although chemotherapy often produces initial clinical responses, outcomes remain poor, largely due to the development of drug resistance. We previously identified a subset of doxorubicin-resistant cells in human angiosarcoma and canine hemangiosarcoma cell lines that exhibit high lysosomal accumulation of doxorubicin. Hydrophobic, weak base chemotherapeutics, like doxorubicin, are known to sequester within lysosomes, promoting resistance by limiting drug accessibility to cellular targets. Drug synergy between the beta adrenergic receptor (β-AR) antagonist, propranolol, and multiple chemotherapeutics has been documented in vitro, and …

Xerostomia is a common adverse effect of radiation therapy at the head and neck area. Radiation-induced xerostomia can be severe and detrimental for the quality of life. Clinicians and radiologists have focused on the prevention of xerostomia as feasible, which has been significantly improved in the recent decades with the use of the contemporary radiation technology. However, radiation-induced xerostomia still remains one of the most devastating side effects of radiation therapy. Clinical risk factors have been identified, but the variation of its incidence and presentation has turned the focus on the investigation of parameters that would be able to predict …

This study examines the racial, socio-economic, and political factors that shaped The House of Yisrael, a Black Nationalist community in Cincinnati, Ohio. The members of this community structure their lives following the Black Hebrew Israelite ideology sharing the core beliefs that Black people are the "true" descendants of the ancient Israelites of the biblical narrative. Therefore, as Israelites, Black people should follow the Torah as a guideline for daily life. Because they are the "chosen people," God will judge those who have oppressed them. This ideology, which began in the U.S. during the nineteenth century, has recently been growing more …

Extracellular signal-regulated kinase 3 (ERK3) is a member of the atypical mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) subfamily, whose members have been shown to play important roles in a number of cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, migration, and apoptosis. While signals regulating ERK3 kinase activity remain unclear, ERK3 is known to be an unstable protein with function tightly regulated via ubiquitination and proteasomal turnover. The deubiquitinating enzyme USP20 has been shown to regulate ERK3 by stabilizing the kinase, but presently, no destabilizing ubiquitin ligases have been identified. The SKP1-CUL1-F-box protein (SCF) E3 ligases are a subfamily of ubiquitin E3 ligases composed of …

Academic Performance, Anxiety, And Feelings Of Classroom Displacement In College Students Amidst The Covid-19 Pandemic., Myron Eusebio
Psychology | Senior Theses
Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, universities are beginning to shift primarily to online courses and hybrid courses. This presents a potential issue because it disrupts the traditional learning experience that students expect from attending an academic institution. The pandemic and sudden disruption of traditional classroom learning may cause adverse changes in a student’s anxiety levels and academic performance. Research has shown that online courses often require students to have lower anxiety levels to perform well academically, which highlights a problematic relationship in students feeling higher levels of anxiety in online classes. (Solimeno et., 2007). The goal of this study is to …

The Effects Of Rolipram, A Selective Phosphodiesterase Inhibitor, On Immortalized Schwann Cell Proliferation, Akap95 And Cyclin D3 Expression, Kyle P. Kenney, Mary Pistack, Angela Asirvatham
Student Research Poster Presentations 2021
Schwann cells are a vital component of the Peripheral Nervous System and aid in the repair of axons following injury. The regulation of Schwann cell growth in vitro is facilitated by heregulin, a neuron-secreted growth factor, and an unknown mitogen that activates the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) pathway. The abundance of intracellular cAMP is regulated by a family of enzymes called phosphodiesterases (PDEs). PDE inhibitors such as rolipram have therapeutic potential in various disorders and function by increasing the levels of intracellular cAMP. A-Kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs), a family of scaffolding proteins that belong to the cAMP/Protein Kinase A (PKA) …

Investigating The Role Of Schizophrenia-Associated Gene Expression In The Developing Human Brain Using Machine Learning, Katie Kelly
Other resources
Schizophrenia is a debilitating condition that affects 1% of the population, causes significant hardship and though there are treatments available they are characterised by several limitations. It is a complex mental disorder where some individuals show mild subclinical cognitive symptoms before psychosis onset in adolescence. The treatments available only target a portion of the symptoms and although extensive research has been conducted, a comprehensive understanding of the nature of schizophrenia remains elusive. Unlike other neurodevelopmental disorders, schizophrenia symptoms do not typically present themselves until adolescence. This study aimed to discover gene co-expression networks at multiple developmental stages to identify candidate …

Hurricane Irma Induces Divergent Behavioral And Hormonal Impacts On An Urban And Forest Population Of Invasive Anolis Lizards: Evidence For An Urban Resilience Hypothesis, Haralambos Fokidis, Taylor Brock
Faculty Publications
Hurricanes can have both profound short-term effects on animal populations and serve as long-term drivers of evolutionary change. Animals inhabiting varying habitats may differ in their response to hurricane impacts. Increasing evidence sug- gests that animals from urban areas exhibit different behavioral and physiological traits compared to rural counterparts, in- cluding attenuated hormonal stress responses and a lowered propensity for flight behavior. A unique opportunity was pre- sented when Hurricane Irma hit Florida on 10 September 2017 and interrupted a study of invasive brown anoles (Anolis sagrei) at an urban and a forest. Using data collected before and after Hurricane …

Trichotorquatus Gen. Nov. - A New Genus Of Soil Cyanobacteria Discovered From American Drylands, Nicole Pietrasiak, Sharon Reeve, Karina Osorio-Santos, David A. Lipson, Jeffrey R. Johansen
2021 Faculty Bibliography
Cyanobacteria are crucial ecosystem components in dryland soils. Advances in describing a–level taxonomy are needed to understand what drives their abundance and distribution. We describe Trichotorquatus gen. nov. (Oculatellaceae, Synechococcales, Cyanobacteria) based on four new species isolated from dryland soils including the coastal sage scrub near San Diego, California (USA), the Mojave and Colorado Deserts with sites at Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve, California (USA), and the Atacama Desert (Chile). The genus is morphologically characterized by having thin trichomes (<4.5 lm wide), cells both shorter and longer than wide, rarely occurring single and double false branching, necridia appearing singly or in rows, and sheaths with a distinctive collar-like fraying and widening mid-filament, the feature for which the genus is named. The genus is morphologically nearly identical with Leptolyngbya sensu stricto but is phylogenetically quite distant from that genus. It is consequently a cryptic genus that will likely be differentiated in future studies based on 16S rRNA sequence data. The type species, T. maritimus sp. nov. is morphologically distinct from the other three species, T. coquimbo sp. nov., T. andrei sp. nov. and T. ladouxae sp. nov. However, these latter three species are morphologically very close and are considered by the authors to be cryptic species. All species are separated phylogenetically based on sequence of the 16S-23S ITS region. Three distinct ribosomal operons were recovered from the genus, lending difficulty to recognizing further diversity in this morphologically cryptic genus.

The Economics Of Biodiversity The Dasgupta Review Abridged Version, Sir Partha Dasgupta
The Economics Of Biodiversity The Dasgupta Review Abridged Version, Sir Partha Dasgupta
Environmental Economics
In 2019, Her Majesty’s Treasury (UK) commissioned Sir Partha Dasgupta, an economist and Professor Emeritus at Cambridge University to produce an independent, global review on the Economics of Biodiversity. Sir Partha was assisted by a multi-disciplinary Advisory Panel that included representatives of public policy, science, economics and business. The Review argues that countries should de-emphasize GDP as an index of progress and instead should focus on a national Wealth measure that includes an accounting for Natural Capital. After World War II, when the world was very different from what it is now, Sir Partha argues the economic questions being faced …

Genes May Have A Big Influence On Vegetarianism, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Dietary Issues
A Dutch research project found that identical twins were more similar than fraternal twins in giving up meat. This suggests that one’s genetic make-up may play a role in whether one is a vegetarian or not. The genetic effect became less influential in males than in females as they grew older.

Review Of The Evidence Of Sentience In Cephalopod Molluscs And Decapod Crustaceans, Jonathan Birch, Charolotte Burn, Alexandra Schnell, Heather Browning, Andrew Crump
General - Animal Feeling
Birch and colleagues have developed an important and useful framework for evaluating the evidence for sentience – namely, the capacity to experience pain, distress and suffering, in cephalopod molluscs (cuttlefish, octopods and squid) and decapod crustaceans (including crabs, crayfish, lobsters, prawns, shrimps). Birch and colleagues develop eight criteria in their evaluation framework which are used to weigh the evidence from over 300 scientific publications. The report also investigates the potential welfare implications of current commercial practices on these species. The report concludes that cephalopods and decapod crustaceans are probably sentient.
