Oscar Wilde And The Invention Of A Life-Creating Fiction, Michael Lackey
Oscar Wilde And The Invention Of A Life-Creating Fiction, Michael Lackey
English Publications
When discussing the origins, rise, and contemporary legitimization of biofiction, Oscar Wilde is a crucial figure. This is not just because he authored one of the first and most important reflections about the aesthetic form, but also because he became the subject of many biofictions, most notably Desmond Hall's I Give You Oscar Wilde: A Biographical Novel {1965), Peter Ackroyd's The Last Testament of Oscar Wilde (1983), Louis Edwards's Oscar Wilde Discovers America (2003), and Colm Toibin's The Master (2004). Some, of course, would question and challenge my decision to include Toibin's novel in this list, as many would say …
Modifying An Ergosterol Extraction Protocol To Quantify Fungal Biomass At The University Of Minnesota-Morris, Alex Carroll
Modifying An Ergosterol Extraction Protocol To Quantify Fungal Biomass At The University Of Minnesota-Morris, Alex Carroll
Student Research, Papers, and Creative Works
In aquatic ecosystems, fungi play an essential role in decomposing leaves and making nutrients available to other organisms such as invertebrates and detritivores. Therefore, it is useful to quantify the amount of fungal biomass growing on submerged leaves, and this quantity can be estimated by measuring the chemical ergosterol, which is found only in fungi. Gessner (2005) developed an ergosterol extraction protocol using lipid extraction, purification with solid-phase extraction (SPE), and analysis with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, not all of the equipment mentioned in the protocol was available at the University of Minnesota-Morris. Therefore, the goal of this project …

Understanding the response of the coral holobiont to environmental change is crucial to inform conservation efforts. The most pressing problem is “coral bleaching,” usually precipitated by prolonged thermal stress. We used untargeted, polar metabolite profiling to investigate the physiological response of the coral species Montipora capitata and Pocillopora acuta to heat stress. Our goal was to identify diagnostic markers present early in the bleaching response. From the untargeted UHPLC-MS data, a variety of co-regulated dipeptides were found that have the highest differential accumulation in both species. The structures of four dipeptides were determined and showed differential accumulation in symbiotic and …

Exploring Living Conditions And Asthma Among Migrant Farmworkers, Jenelle Williams
Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Migrant farmworkers are exposed to many physical, chemical, and biological hazards that pose human health risks. Quality of housing is a major factor that contributes to asthma disparities around the world; however, no study to date has explored the factors associated with the high rates in this population. Poor housing conditions are associated with a wide range of health conditions, including respiratory infections and asthma. Addressing housing issues offers public health practitioners an opportunity to address an important social determinant of health. Using the Social Ecological Model, the objective of this quantitative, cross-sectional dissertation study is to examine the presence …

Stilbenes are a class of natural compounds with a wide variety of biological effects, such as antitumor activity. The best-known stilbene is resveratrol, whose clinical application is limited due to its low bioavailability. Methoxylated derivatives of this stilbene, including cis-trimethoxystilbene (cis-TMS) and trans-trimethoxystilbene (trans-TMS) have demonstrated more pronounced cytotoxic and anti-proliferative effects than resveratrol. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the cytotoxicity and antiproliferative effects of cis-and trans-TMS in MCF-7 and its normal counterpart MCF-10A. Both compounds were cytotoxic, genotoxic, and induced G2-M accumulation and cell death in the two cell lines. These results suggested …

Expression Of Trefoil Factor 3 Is Decreased In Colorectal Cancer, Ingrid Espinoza, Sumit Agarwal, Amit Reddy, Veena Shenoy
Faculty and Student Publications
In colorectal cancer (CRC), high expression of trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) is associated with tumor progression and reduced patient survival; however, bioinformatics analyses of public 'omics' databases show low TFF3 expression in CRCs as compared to normal tissues. Thus, we examined TFF3 expression in CRCs and matching normal tissues to evaluate its role in CRC progression. TFF3 gene expression was char- acterized using the bioinformatics portal UALCAN (http:// ualcan.path.uab.edu). Tissue microarrays (TMAs) of archival CRC specimens (n=96) were immunostained with anti-human TFF3 antibodies. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining intensity was semi-quantitatively scored. For this cohort, the median follow-up was 5.4 years. Associations …

Triclosan and isoniazid are known antitubercular compounds that have proven to be also active againstLeishmaniaparasites. On these grounds, a collection of 37 diverse 1,2,3-triazoles based on the antitubercular molecules triclosan and 5-octyl-2-phenoxyphenol (8PP) were designed in search of novel structures with leishmanicidal activity and prepared using different alkynes and azides. The 37 compounds were assayed againstLeishmania donovani, the etiological agent of leishmaniasis, yielding some analogs with activity at micromolar concentrations and againstM. tuberculosisH37Rv resulting in scarce active compounds with an MIC of 20 μM. To study the mechanism of action of these catechols, we analyzed the inhibition activity of the …

"Universities and public research institutes play a key role in the innovation ecosystem. Many countries have implemented national strategies to support the commercialization of knowledge produced by public institutions, to help take their innovations and scientific breakthroughs to market and ultimately boost economic growth. Research bodies themselves have also introduced practices to support knowledge transfer activities. The legal, policy, and institutional approaches to knowledge transfer are diverse, and there is no standardized set of assessment metrics relevant to both high- and middle-income countries. In this context, how can policymakers best help countries and institutions improve the efficiency of their knowledge …

While many classes of chemotherapeutic agents exist to treat solid tumors, few can generate a lasting response without substantial off-target toxicity despite significant scientific advancements and investments. In this review, the paths of development for nanoparticles, oncolytic viruses, and oncolytic bacteria over the last 20 years of research towards clinical translation and acceptance as novel cancer therapeutics are compared. Novel nanoparticle, oncolytic virus, and oncolytic bacteria therapies all start with a common goal of accomplishing therapeutic drug activity or delivery to a specific site while avoiding off-target effects, with overlapping methodology between all three modalities. Indeed, the degree of overlap …

Three Roles Of Narratives In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain, Nina Atanasova
Philosophy and Religious Studies Department Faculty Publications
In this paper, I discuss the roles narratives play in the diagnostics, treatment, and recovery of chronic pain patients. I show that the successes of this narrative approach to the treatment of chronic pain support the biopsychosocial model of disease. The central example of narrative interventions discussed in the paper is pain neuroscience education. This is an intervention which aims at helping chronic pain patients reconceptualize their pain experiences so as to align them with neuroscientific knowledge of pain. Multiple clinical trials have established the success of these interventions in pain reduction. This shows that neuroscience pain education is in …

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of release parameter changes within individuals (intra-individual) on basketball shooting performance across both free throws and three-point shots, and identify whether any velocity dependence exists. Twelve male basketball players were recorded shooting seventy-five three-point shots (6.75 m) and fifty free throws (4.19 m). Ball release parameters were estimated by combining an analytic trajectory model including drag, a least squares estimator, and gradient-based release distance compensation. Intra-individual re-lease velocity standard deviations (SD) were found to be significantly smaller across all distances ([0.05 - 0.13 m/s] when com-pared to statistics reported by …

Experiencing God Together: A Phenomenology Of Campus Revival And Its Impact On Student Faith And Spirituality, Caleb Hoelscher
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Campus revivals are a significant historical phenomenon in higher education, and interest in faith and spirituality is gaining significant amount of attention in student development literature. However, there are currently no studies exploring the connections between campus revival and father and spirituality from a student development perspective. In order to fill this gap in the literature, two questions guided this study: What is the shared experience of students who participated in a campus revival? What impact, if any, does participation in a campus revival have on student faith and spirituality? The study employed a phenomenological design, interviewing nine alumni who …

The ongoing opioid crisis in the United States is continuing to worsen as prevention strategies for opioid abuse and addiction are ineffective or improperly regulated. Behaviors of the providers, the public, and the patients must all be addressed to create effective prevention strategies because the attitude toward opioid addiction is a significant factor in the treatment of the disease. Many people view substance abuse as a choice and while this may be an accurate assumption in the beginning, citizens across America are not comprehending the full impact these substances have on a person’s body over time, specifically their brain. In …
