SDSU Beef Day 2021 Summary Publication

Objective
Our objectives were to determine the effects of hybrid rye inclusion on finishing steer performance and carcass characteristics, and to estimate net energy (NE) value.
Study Description
Predominately Angus steers (n = 240, initial shrunk bodyweight [BW] = 891 ± 40.8 pounds) were used in 117-d finishing experiment. Hybrid rye was used to replace either one-third, two-thirds, or 100% of dry-rolled corn (DRC) resulting in four treatments: [DRC:Rye, DM basis (60:0), (40:20), (20:40), and (0:60)] with six pens per treatment and 10 steers/pen. Performance adjusted NE values were calculated from performance and carcass data. Replacing DRC with rye linearly …

Material Properties And Application Of Biomechanical Principles Provide Significant Motion Control Performance In Experimental Ankle Foot Orthosis-Footwear Combination, Christopher F. Hovorka, Géza F. Kogler, Young Hui Chang, Robert Gregor Jan 2021

Material Properties And Application Of Biomechanical Principles Provide Significant Motion Control Performance In Experimental Ankle Foot Orthosis-Footwear Combination, Christopher F. Hovorka, Géza F. Kogler, Young Hui Chang, Robert Gregor

Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research

© 2021 The Author(s) Background: This study, the first of its kind, originated with the need for a brace (an ankle foot orthosis), to constrain ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion within a motion threshold of < 5°. A conventional thermoplastic, solid brace failed during a quasi-static loading study, informing the investigation and development of an experimental carbon composite brace, maximizing stiffness and proximity of shank and foot cylindrical shells to provide the required degree of control. Methods: Two experiments were conducted: a quasi-static loading study, using cadaveric limbs (n = 2), and a gait study with healthy subjects (n = 14). Conditions tested were STOP, FREE, and CONTROL. Data for all studies were collected using six motion-capture cameras (Vicon, Oxford, UK; 120 Hz) tracking bone-anchored markers (cadaveric limbs) and skin-anchored markers (subjects). In the quasi-static loading study, loading conditions were congruent with the gait study. Study 1 involved a quasi-static loading analysis using cadaveric limbs, compared motion data from a conventional thermoplastic solid brace and the experimental brace. Study 2 involved quantifying ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion in subjects during treadmill walking, in brace STOP, FREE, and CONTROL conditions. Findings: The experimental brace in STOP condition consistently constrained ankle plantarflexion and dorsiflexion below the motion threshold of < 5°, across all studies. Interpretation: Collectively, these findings demonstrate (1) that a conventional thermoplastic, solid brace was ineffective for clinical applications that required significant motion control, and (2) that ankle motion control is most effective when considered as a relationship between the brace, the ankle-foot complex, and the external forces that affect them both.

Management Innovations For Resilient Public Rangelands: Adoption Constraints And Considerations For Interagency Diffusion, Gwendŵr R. Meredith, Mark W. Brunson, Stuart P. Hardegree

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Maintaining healthy rangeland ecosystems requires adaptive co-management at the landscape scale. Because the majority of western rangelands are publicly owned, it is critical that federal land management agencies work together in generating and sharing information. Promotion and communication of rangeland management innovations among agencies is one means of sharing information. Two rangeland management innovations, the Weather-Centric Restoration Tool and Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health, were studied in order to better understand agency adoption decisions and barriers to diffusion of the innovations across agencies. Using a mixed qualitative methodology, we interviewed land managers across the floristic Great Basin and in southeastern …

Formulation And Characterization Of Beeswax/Rosemary Oil Nanostructured Lipid Carrier For Drug Delivery System, Mohd Latif Farhanim

Student Works (2020-2029)

A stable colloidal suspension of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) was synthesized from natural source of lipid. The toxicity and insolubility of drugs in water remain a significant problem and has led to the development of food-grade drug delivery systems such as nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs). NLCs composing various amount of beeswax (BW), rosemary oil (RO) and poloxamer 188 (P188) were prepared by melt-emulsification combined with ultrasonication method. The physicochemical properties of NLC also were determined. Optimization of the formulation (F) was performed based on the criteria of stability. Formulation with the smallest particle size and highest magnitude of zeta potential …

The management of natural resources based on local wisdom has become a crucial issue lately. Mainstreaming local values and norms is one of the best practices in managing community resources and can minimize social conf licts. However, the fact that the practice of managing natural resources often has an impact on the emergence of conf lict and community unrest over environmental degradation. As is the case in Wadas Village which became the location of andesite stone mining as material for the construction of the Bener Dam. Environmental degradation arising from the practice of andesite rock mining also has an impact …

Many ambush-foraging snakes move their tails to entice prey within striking range ('caudal luring'). During ontogeny, the conspicuous hues of caudal lures change to match the cryptic patterning of the body/head. This coincides with decreased luring behaviour and reflects the trade-off between prey acquisition and camouflage as the snake grows. Australo-Papuan death adders (Acanthophis, Elapidae) are unique in that both juveniles and adults use caudal luring, but ontogenetic colour change has not been investigated. We examined the spectral reflectance, microstructure and pigmentation of caudal skin in wild-sourced and captive bred Acanthopihs antarcticus ranging in body size (snout-vent length 116-674 mm; …

Reflection And Emotional Well-Being In Nietzsche And Zhuang Zi, Danesh K. Singh Jan 2021

Reflection And Emotional Well-Being In Nietzsche And Zhuang Zi, Danesh K. Singh

Comparative Philosophy

Nietzsche and Zhuang Zi both believe that the supposed value of certain emotions they deem harmful should be questioned and that reflection can be utilized to change the emotions. They intend to disabuse those of their respective times of conventional morality, with the aim of achieving a state in which negative moral emotions are eliminated and a more natural way of life is embraced. Specifically, Nietzsche examines guilt, a remnant of an ascetic morality endorsed by the religious elite; Zhuang Zi, similarly, considers grief, a moral emotion tied to traditional culture and endorsed by Confucian morality. Living naturally involves the …

“Wild Neat Cattle…”: Using Domesticated Livestock To Engineer Colonial Landscapes In Seventeenth-Century Maryland, Valerie M. J. Hall Jan 2021

“Wild Neat Cattle…”: Using Domesticated Livestock To Engineer Colonial Landscapes In Seventeenth-Century Maryland, Valerie M. J. Hall

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The excavation of two 17th-century sites in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, provides an opportunity to explore the impacts of domesticated livestock on the surrounding landscape. Faunal assemblages are analyzed following Henry Miller’s (1984, 1988) foundational study of subsistence practices of early English colonists in the Tidewater region. Data sets from Sparrow’s Rest (18AN1436) and Shaw’s Folly (18AN339) are examined to determine the percentages of domestic livestock vs. wild game consumed by the families at each site as compared to the patterns identified on contemporaneous sites in Miller’s survey, as well as to elucidate potential environmental impacts from the free-ranging herds …

Shell Button-Making On The Delmarva Peninsula, Ca. 1930s-1990s, Siara L. Biuk

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Shell button-making in the United States began in northeastern industrial cities like New York in the late 19th century, using ocean shell imported from Australia and the south Pacific. A German immigrant brought the industry from Austria to the American Midwest after recognizing the potential of the freshwater mussel beds of the Mississippi River as a resource for shell button-making. The industry flourished for several years but suffered from labor strikes and depletion of the local mussel population. In the early 1930s entrepreneurs established shell button factories in rural portions of eastern Maryland and Delaware (Delmarva), again using imported ocean …

Environmental Archaeology In Recent Contexts: Migration, Scale, And Landscapes, Barnet Pavao-Zuckerman

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Environmental archaeology is a diverse field of study focused on understanding the complexity of human ecological relationships. Environmental archaeologists use a wide range of approaches to examine human-ecosystem interactions, including zooarchaeology, paleoethnobotany, geomorphology, archaeomalacology, and geochemistry, among others. Human-environment interactions, and research in environmental archaeology, occurs at many scales, from local to global. This is particularly true for environmental archaeological research from the past few hundred years as human environmental impacts became increasingly far-reaching and global in scale. The last 500 years has been particularly significant for human-ecosystem relationships as a result of the global movement of human populations, the …

Functional Influence Of 14-3-3 (Ywha) Proteins In Mammals, Elizabeth Barley, Santanu De

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

The 14-3-3 (YWHA) proteins are homologous, ubiquitous, and conserved in most organisms ranging from plants to animals and play important roles in regulating key cellular events such as cell signaling, development, apoptosis, etc. These proteins consist of seven isoforms in mammals, termed under Greek alphabetization: beta (β), gamma (γ), epsilon (ε), eta (η), tau/theta (τ), sigma (σ), and zeta (ζ). Each of these isoforms can interact with a plethora of binding partners and has been shown to serve a distinct role in molecular crosstalk, biological processes, and disease susceptibility. Protein 14-3-3 isoforms are scaffolding proteins capable of forming homodimers and …

Building Excellence In Scientific Teaching: How Important Is The Evidence For Evidence-Based Teaching When Training Stem Tas?, Lorelei E. Patrick, Hillary A. Barron, Julie C. Brown, Sehoya Cotner

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Evidence-based teaching practices (EBTP)—like inquiry-based learning, inclusive teaching, and active learning (AL)—have been shown to benefit all students, especially women, first-generation, and traditionally minoritized students in science fields. However, little research has focused on how best to train teaching assistants (TAs) to use EBTP or on which components of professional development are most important. We designed and experimentally manipulated a series of presemester workshops on AL, dividing subjects into two groups. The Activity group worked in teams to learn an AL technique with a workshop facilitator. These teams then modeled the activity, with their peers acting as students. In the …
