Bonded Or Broken? An Expansion Of Goodman And Gotlib’S Depressive Symptom Transmission Model Extended To Foster Parents And Grandparent Caregivers, Acacia Lopez Dec 2021

Bonded Or Broken? An Expansion Of Goodman And Gotlib’S Depressive Symptom Transmission Model Extended To Foster Parents And Grandparent Caregivers, Acacia Lopez

Theses and Dissertations

Current literature establishes a relationship between maternal depression and offspring depression. Goodman and Gotlib’s “Developmental Model for Understanding Mechanisms of Transmission” suggests possible mechanisms including attachment. Prior research also demonstrates a link between fathers’ depression and pediatric psychopathology risk, but further research is needed to elucidate the effect of other non-parental caregivers. Children raised by both types of non-parental caregivers are vulnerable to attachment disruptions due to separation from their parental caregivers and the prevalence of children residing with these caregivers is on the rise in recent years. Using the Goodman and Gotlib framework, this study examined the relation between …

Initial Characterization Of Prna From Burkholderia Ambifaria: Developing An Nadph-Dependent Activity Assay For Tryptophan Halogenation, Mahmuda Akter

Theses and Dissertations

Some bacteria produce a potent antifungal agent (pyrrolnitrin) from tryptophan using four dioxygen dependent steps to outcompete other microbes. Each step of this process is catalyzed by an oxygenase encoded by the prnABCD cassette. The first enzymatic step in pyrrolnitrin biosynthesis is the regioselective chlorination of tryptophan to form 7-chlorotryptophan. This halogenation is catalyzed by PrnA, a Flavin dependent oxygenase, which has been isolated and characterized from P. fluorescens. The pyrrolnitrin biosynthesis pathway (prnABCD) has been also observed in the Burkholderia genus. This thesis comprises my studies on the expression, purification, and characterization of PrnA from Burkholderia ambifaria. Beyond the …

Urban-Rural Differences In Lifespan Variation In The United States, Benjamin H. Walker Dec 2021

Urban-Rural Differences In Lifespan Variation In The United States, Benjamin H. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Since the mid-1980s, mortality rate improvements in urban areas have outpaced those in rural areas, leading to substantial urban-rural disparities in mortality. Research on urban-rural mortality disparities has focused exclusively on differences in mortality between urban and rural areas and has not examined differences in the amount of inequality in the length of life within these areas. Lifespan variation is an important dimension of health inequality that complements traditional metrics of mortality (i.e., mortality rates and life expectancy) by indicating the amount of inequality of lifespans within a population. This dissertation provides several contributions to our understanding of urban-rural differences …
