Reducing the risk of large, severe wildfires while also increasing the security of mountain water supplies and enhancing biodiversity are urgent priorities in western US forests. After a century of fire suppression, Yosemite and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks located in California’s Sierra Nevada initiated programs to manage wildfires and these areas present a rare opportunity to study the effects of restored fire regimes. Forest cover decreased during the managed wildfire period and meadow and shrubland cover increased, especially in Yosemite’s Illilouette Creek basin that experienced a 20% reduction in forest area. These areas now support greater pyrodiversity and consequently greater …

Analysis Of 316 Omnitrophota (Op3) Genomes Reveals A Diverse And Ubiquitous Candidate Phylum Of Putative Syntrophs, Predators, And Free-Living Nanobacteria Encoding Giant Open-Reading Frames., Cale O. Seymour
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Candidate bacterial phylum Omnitrophota has never been isolated and is poorly understood. In this study, we explored the genomics, phylogeny, taxonomy, distribution, cell size, and predicted physiology of Omnitrophota based on 316 genomes. Phylogenomic concordance identified seven classes accommodating 144 species. Calibration of genome-based taxonomy to ribosomal SSU profiling revealed most Omnitrophota classes are prevalent in the Earth Microbiome Dataset, particularly in soils and sediments. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting and differential size filtration experiments showed ultra-small (<400 >nm) cells are common across the phylum, as are parasitism-related genes, including a conserved tight adherence (Tad) complex and ATP/ADP translocase. However, nucleotide and …400>

Phytochrome Physiology And Plant Perception Of Far-Red Photons, Paul Kusuma
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Photons are the primary energy source for most life on Earth, as they drive photosynthesis, a process that turns the CO2 in air into food. One crucial parameters for the optimization of growth is leaf area, which determines the ability of a plant to capture photons for photosynthesis. In order to gain access to photons in shaded environments, plants have evolved unique sensors, called photoreceptors, which respond to changes in the color and intensity of light.
Far-red photons (photons at the edge of human vision that appear as dim red light) hold particular promise in regulating plant shape and …

A Whole New (Eastern) World: Ramy Youssef’S Role In The Undoing Of Orientalism In Modern-Day Media, Mary Hanna
A Whole New (Eastern) World: Ramy Youssef’S Role In The Undoing Of Orientalism In Modern-Day Media, Mary Hanna
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
In 2019, writer and director Ramy Youssef debuted his semi-autobiographical television series, Ramy. Youssef’s series is a coming-of-age story that documents the typical trials and tribulations of entering adulthood all while navigating these issues as a young Muslim Egyptian American. The creation of the show in part serves to address common Orientalist misconceptions regarding religion, customs, and gender roles that exist in mainstream media, especially in a post 9/11 world. Youssef’s intention is to derail the trajectory of this discourse by offering an often overlooked first-hand portrayal of a diasporic Arab and Muslim experience in America that defies the predominant …

The Effects Of Ketamine Administration On Novel Object Placement And Hippocampal Ampa Receptor Expression In The Male Long Evan Rats, Ruchael Mcnair
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Many psychiatric and neurological disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) present with deficits across many cognitive domains including spatial memory and structural dysfunction of the hippocampus. The dorsal hippocampus is indicated to play a special role in spatial memory. Synaptic plasticity mechanisms are also critical in memory function in the hippocampus. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is one type of synaptic plasticity that is directly associated with memory function. Mechanisms of LTP increase α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4- isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors through n-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor activation. Ketamine is an NMDA antagonist that has recently gained attention for its rapid …

The Influence Of Incubation Conditions On Oxygen Consumption During The Development Of Pantherophis Guttatus, Celeste Gallardo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The flexible shell of some oviparous reptiles has led to differences in nutrient mobilization and water relations when compared to their rigid-shelled counterparts. Flexible-shelled eggs gain more water during development, and because of the shell structure, yolk calcium content is higher than that of eggshells. When water availability is altered for reptiles with flexible-shelled eggs, differences in both energy and nutrient utilization are observed. This study was designed to determine the baseline metabolic rate during development for the snake, Pantherophis guttatus under normal conditions, and to observe how changes in eggshell calcium and water availability impact embryonic oxygen consumption. Eggshell …

Endothelial Heat Shock Protein A12b And Yes-Associated Protein Cooperatively Promote Angiogenesis Following Myocardial Infarction, Min Fan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heart failure after myocardial infarction (MI) remains the leading cause of mortality among all cardiovascular diseases globally. Angiogenesis plays a critical role in cardiac functional recovery after MI. Heat shock protein A12B (HSPA12B) is predominately expressed in endothelial cells and required for angiogenesis. Yes-associated protein (YAP) has been reported to promote tumor angiogenesis.
In the present study, we investigated the cooperative role of HSPA12B and YAP in angiogenesis following myocardial ischemic injury. Endothelial specific deficiency of HSPA12B (eHspa12b-/-) or YAP (eYap-/-) impairs angiogenesis and exacerbates cardiac dysfunction after MI, when compared with wild type …

Gabaergic-Related Pathology In The Anterior Cingulate Cortex Of Postmortem Human Brain Tissue In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Gethien Andrew
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is part of the cognitive and emotional brain circuitry that mediates social interaction. Imbalances between inhibitory, GABAergic neurons, and excitatory, glutamatergic neurons, in this region are essential to brain circuity during social responses and are thought to be involved with behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Enriched cell populations of glutamatergic neurons, obtained through laser capture microdissection, were used for gene expression studies of GABAergic receptors (GABRA1, GABRA4, and GABBR1). Additionally, proteins that impact GABAergic synapses (Spinophilin, CPLX1, mTOR, IGF1R, PSD95, PARP1) were investigated using Western Blotting with punchdissected homogenate brain tissue from ACC …

Mitophagy Protein Pink1 Suppresses Colon Tumor Growth By Metabolic Reprogramming Via P53 Activation And Reducing Acetyl-Coa Production, Kunlun Yin, Jordan Lee, Zhaoli Liu, Hyeoncheol Kim, David R Martin, Dandan Wu, Meilian Liu, Xiang Xue
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US. Understanding the mechanisms of CRC progression is essential to improve treatment. Mitochondria is the powerhouse for healthy cells. However, in tumor cells, less energy is produced by the mitochondria and metabolic reprogramming is an early hallmark of cancer. The metabolic differences between normal and cancer cells are being interrogated to uncover new therapeutic approaches. Mitochondria targeting PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) is a key regulator of mitophagy, the selective elimination of damaged mitochondria by autophagy. Defective mitophagy is increasingly associated with various diseases including CRC. However, a …

How Do You Visit: Identifying Addicts From Large-Scale Transit Records Via Scenario Deep Embedding, Canghong Jin, Dongkai Chen, Zhiwei Lin, Zemin Liu, Minghui Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Identification of individuals based on transit modes is of great importance in user tracking systems. However, identifying users in real-life studies is not trivial owing to the following challenges: 1) activity data containing both temporal and spatial context are high-order and sparse; 2) traditional two-step classifiers depend on trajectory patterns as input features, which limits accuracy especially in the case of scattered and diverse data; 3) in some cases, there are few positive instances and they are difficult to detect. Therefore, approaches involving statistics-based or trajectory-based features do not work effectively. Deep learning methods also suffer from the problem of …
Node-Wise Localization Of Graph Neural Networks, Zemin Liu, Yuan Fang, Chenghao Liu, Steven C.H. Hoi
Node-Wise Localization Of Graph Neural Networks, Zemin Liu, Yuan Fang, Chenghao Liu, Steven C.H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graph neural networks (GNNs) emerge as a powerful family of representation learning models on graphs. To derive node representations, they utilize a global model that recursively aggregates information from the neighboring nodes. However, different nodes reside at different parts of the graph in different local contexts, making their distributions vary across the graph. Ideally, how a node receives its neighborhood information should be a function of its local context, to diverge from the global GNN model shared by all nodes. To utilize node locality without overfitting, we propose a node-wise localization of GNNs by accounting for both global and local …
