The Experiences Of Psychologists Working In Federal Policy Positions, Kimberly Lauren Adams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

APA has long emphasized the importance of psychologists involvement in federal policy work and in recent years the number of psychologists choosing to make careers in this field has increased. Despite the growth of policy work as a vocation for psychologists, there is little empirical research looking into the experiences of psychologists who enter this career. Eight license eligible psychologists were interviewed about their experiences working on policy within the federal government and interview data were analyzed using grounded theory methodology. The core category that emerged from this study was, Psychologists are well-suited to work in federal policy development; however, …

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo Jan 2021

Corporate Entanglement With Religion And The Suppression Of Expression, Ronald J. Colombo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The power and ability of corporations to assert their First Amendment rights to the detriment of others remains both a controversial and unresolved issue. Adverting to relevant strands of existing jurisprudence and certain constitutionally relevant factors, this Article suggests a solution. The path turns upon the recognition that whereas some corporations are appropriately categorized as rights-bearing entities (akin to associations), others are more appropriately categorized as "entities against which the rights of individuals can be asserted." Legislation, in the form of the draft "CENSOR" Act, is provided as a means by which to implement this categorization. What hopefully emerges is …

Virtuous Law-Breaking, G. Alex Sinha Jan 2021

Virtuous Law-Breaking, G. Alex Sinha

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A rapidly growing body of scholarship embraces virtue jurisprudence, a series of (often ad hoc) attempts to incorporate the philosophical tradition of virtue ethics into legal theory. Broadly understood, virtue ethics describes an approach to moral questions that emphasizes the importance of developing and embodying various virtues, often as manifestations of human flourishing. Scholars typically contrast virtue ethics with deontological and consequentialist moral theories, tracing virtue-centered analysis to ancient Greek philosophers, and in particular to Aristotle. Virtue ethics has experienced a revival over the past 65 years; but, long before that, it proved especially influential in Catholic moral thought, particularly …

Children And Crime: In The Moment, K Haines, S Case, R Smith, Laidler K Joe, N Hughes, C Webster, T Goddard, J Deakin, D Johns, K Richards, P Gray

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Traditional approaches to understanding and responding to children and crime are fundamentally based on ‘miniaturised’ adult models. The assumption appears to be that children are adults in the making, essentially just smaller, developing versions of grown-ups. This view of children is increasingly being challenged. Children are not simply putative adults, they are different, distinct and developing. This article sets out to explore the notion that children essentially think and behave ‘in the moment’. The implications of this for our understanding of children and crime are also explored.

Judgemental rationality is infrequently referenced within discussions of Realist Evaluations. Judgemental rationality refers to researchers’ capacity to assess which, potential, meanings provide the most credible explanations. In evaluation work, rationale for analysis is provided, though rarely do we see how an evaluator made judgements between competing theories, and which theories were discarded and why. We provide a worked example of the application of judgemental rationality. The Engager intervention offered support to prison leavers with common mental health problems. The data for 24, purposively sampled, participants from the intervention arm of the trial were integrated. Bhaskar’s DREIC, a five-step analytical procedure, …

Illegal Waste Exports: Misdescription At Point Of Export, J Lowther Jan 2021

Illegal Waste Exports: Misdescription At Point Of Export, J Lowther

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Hazardous waste exports are, rightly, the subject of a significant and complex legal regime operating at levels from international through to domestic law. A murky history of developed countries exporting waste to their less developed counterparts prompted the development and agreement of the Basel Convention on Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.1 This Convention has a broad constituency for an international environmental law instrument, having almost universal membership.2 Amendments and protocols to enhance the basic obligations in the Convention have been adopted, including the Liability Protocol and the Basel Ban amendment, which applies in the main …

When Is A Child Not A Child? When They Offend. The Minimum Age Of Criminal Responsibility In Western Australia: Insights From The Public, Natalie Gately, Suzanne Rock, James Finney Jan 2021

When Is A Child Not A Child? When They Offend. The Minimum Age Of Criminal Responsibility In Western Australia: Insights From The Public, Natalie Gately, Suzanne Rock, James Finney

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

In 2016, Australia was in the international spotlight after an 11-year-old child became the ‘youngest known person’ to be charged with murder (Booth, 2016). The minimum age of criminal responsibility (MACR) in Australia is 10 years old, with children being charged, trialled, sentenced, and imprisoned for breaking the law. In response to the case, Amnesty International called on the Australian Government to raise the MACR to 12 years, noting that ‘Australia’s out-of-step laws dictate’ that this boy could be held criminally responsible (Booth, 2016; O’Brien & Fitz-Gibbon, 2017). Australia has been under constant national and international pressure to align its …

Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes Jan 2021

Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The high prevalence of conditions among adolescents such as anxiety, depression, substance use and suicide has become a global concern. Given the growing rates of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems at the onset of adolescence, researchers have begun to find interest in identifying associations that account for dysfunctional patterns and problem behaviors. Findings suggest that these negative psychological and behavioral outcomes could be linked to exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, violence, and household dysfunction. The present study investigated associations between ACEs, difficulties in emotion regulation, and problem behaviors among a sample of 43 adolescents age 11-17 …

Examining Individual Differences In Attitudes Toward The Insanity Defense, Dominique M. Kornely Jan 2021

Examining Individual Differences In Attitudes Toward The Insanity Defense, Dominique M. Kornely

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to examine how individual differences in stigma against people who are mentally ill, free will beliefs, just world beliefs, and sentencing goals are associated with attitudes toward the insanity defense. Because there are many misconceptions about what the insanity defense is, and how it is actually used as a sentence, the Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) plea may be underutilized due to public opinions reflecting misunderstanding and/or possible biases (Perlin, 2017). Understanding the relation between individual beliefs and attitudes about the insanity defense would help to better understand potential biases present …

The Influence Of Camera Perspective And Viewer Attitudes Towards Police On Perceptions Of Police-Civilian Encounters, Anna-Louise Skidmore Jan 2021

The Influence Of Camera Perspective And Viewer Attitudes Towards Police On Perceptions Of Police-Civilian Encounters, Anna-Louise Skidmore

Theses : Honours

Research suggests there may be a Camera Perspective Bias (CPB) effect across different camera footage types which influences viewer perceptions of police use of force encounters. Police body-worn camera (BWC) footage presents a first-person perspective from the officer’s point of view which predominantly captures the civilian. It is suggested that viewing an encounter from this perspective elicits a positive bias towards the officer when compared to CCTV footage. Additionally, research also shows that attitudes towards police influence perceptions of a filmed police-civilian encounters. This research aimed to investigate the effect of different camera evidence types (i.e., CCTV, BWC without audio …

The Characteristics And Effectiveness Of Treatment For Young Sex Offenders In Australia And New Zealand: A Systematic Review, James Finney Jan 2021

The Characteristics And Effectiveness Of Treatment For Young Sex Offenders In Australia And New Zealand: A Systematic Review, James Finney

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Sexual offending by young people presents a serious and devastating issue effecting victims, families, and wider society. This has led investigative efforts to understand the efficacy of treatment programs to cease or at minimum reduce sexual recidivism. Evaluations examining treatment efficacy have predominately been conducted in the United States and Canada, with limited research focused exclusively on young sex offenders in Australia and New Zealand. To address the paucity of information, a systematic review of young sex offender treatment research in Australia and New Zealand was conducted. The systematic review employed a comprehensive search strategy and rigorous vetting procedure, which …

Identity: A Crisis Of Confidence? Or Is It Resemblance? An Exploration Of The Different Approaches By Which Eyewitness Evidence Can Be Obtained From Lineups, Dominic T. Jordan Jan 2021

Identity: A Crisis Of Confidence? Or Is It Resemblance? An Exploration Of The Different Approaches By Which Eyewitness Evidence Can Be Obtained From Lineups, Dominic T. Jordan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Research has shown that eyewitness identification decisions are fallible and often mistaken. Although considerable attention has been afforded to identification decision accuracy and its improvement, mistaken identification decisions continue to contribute to costly errors at the evidentiary stage of the criminal justice system process (i.e., wrongful convictions). Several prominent researchers have suggested, by way of explanation, that the existing framework for obtaining eyewitness evidence from lineups, namely, identification, is inadequate. Indeed, the assumption that witnesses when presented with a lineup, can make reliable identification decisions (i.e., can reliably determine that a lineup member is the same unfamiliar person seen previously …

Offenders, Victims, And Perceptions Of Crime From An Evolutionary Perspective, Jordan Meadows Jan 2021

Offenders, Victims, And Perceptions Of Crime From An Evolutionary Perspective, Jordan Meadows

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzed how positive attitudes associated with individuals of high reproductive value impacted decision-making, specifically in the area of punishing offenders who commit crime. Reproductive value in this study was manipulated by controlling the age of both victims and offenders in a crime scenario; the type of crime was also manipulated to measure potential variation caused by differences in reproductive impact. The primary areas of research that supported this study are based on evolutionary psychology, which argues that human behavior is impacted by proximate factors in socio-environmental contexts (Crawford & Anderson, 1989). This study used a model that views …

The Psychological And Physical Well-Being Of Transgender People, Charlene Johnson Jan 2021

The Psychological And Physical Well-Being Of Transgender People, Charlene Johnson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine components of support that may predict better mental health outcomes for transgender people. Gender is typically associated with natal sex. When a persons gender identity does not match their assigned sex at birth, living their life and feeling accepted by society can be challenging. Previous research suggested that support across a variety of settings such as in the home, interpersonal relationships, work, and academic settings are predictive of better overall life outcomes and when this support is lacking, psychological distress such as depression, anxiety, shame, guilt, low self-esteem, and suicidal ideation may …
