Variants Of Social Disorganization: A Comparison Of Community Characteristic Measures On Crime Between Urban And Rural Counties In The United States, Shun Q. Feng Apr 2021

Variants Of Social Disorganization: A Comparison Of Community Characteristic Measures On Crime Between Urban And Rural Counties In The United States, Shun Q. Feng

Student Theses

Abstract

Statement of Problem: This research examines the difference in the predictive nature of conventional social disorganization measures on seven (7) different crime types between urban and rural counties in the United States during 2014. There is a well-developed body of criminological research examining the effect of neighborhood disadvantage on crime through the social disorganization framework. However, social disorganization has been tested almost exclusively in urban or metropolitan areas, suggesting the current framework explaining criminal incidents through conventional measures of neighborhood disadvantage may be limited by “urban bias”. The present study seeks to test the conventional measures of social disorganization …

Are Underprivileged And Less Empowered Women Deprived Of Respectful Maternity Care: Inequities In Childbirth Experiences In Public Health Facilities In Pakistan, Waqas Hameed, Mudassir Uddin, Bilal Iqbal Avan

Community Health Sciences

Background: Attainment of healthcare in respectful and dignified manner is a fundamental right for every woman regardless of the individual status. However, social exclusion, poor psychosocial support, and demeaning care during childbirth at health facilities are common worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We concurrently examined how women with varying socio-demographic characteristics are treated during childbirth, the effect of women's empowerment on mistreatment, and health services factors that contribute to mistreatment in secondary-level public health facilities in Pakistan.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during August-November 2016 among 783 women who gave birth in six secondary-care public health facilities …

Racial Racial Discrimination Within The United States Criminal Justice System, Courtney Speigal Apr 2021

Racial Racial Discrimination Within The United States Criminal Justice System, Courtney Speigal

Honors Projects

For my senior honors project, I chose the topic of discrimination within our criminal justice system. I will be attending law school next year, and this topic has inspired me to become a lawyer. 2020 has been a year with a lot of protesting against social injustice, and change in our democracy. The Black Lives Matter Movement came to light once again, because of a number of questionable cases involving African American citizens. Considering all of this, I decided to research further the discrimination in our country, in a number of areas. I also will be looking at how we …

Population Health Leadership Series: PopTalk Webinars

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, increased stress and anxiety has only further exacerbated the problem of violence in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Through the Safer Hospitals Initiative, Connecticut hospitals have united to develop and implement strategies to create a culture of safety for patients and staff within each of the institutions. This initiative applies the power of high reliability principles to standardize approaches to combatting violence in microsystems and macrosystems throughout an organization. We will share the strategies that may be replicated in your organizations to keep individuals working in healthcare organizations safer by stopping violence before it begins.

Reconceptualizing Cannabis, Julia Peoples Apr 2021

Reconceptualizing Cannabis, Julia Peoples

Honors Theses

Inflammatory rhetoric and increasingly punitive drug policies dominated marijuana politics in the past. Today, as 36 have legalized cannabis in some form and 17 states have legalized recreational marijuana, the federal government continues to perpetuate policies of the past. The following analysis investigates rhetoric and policies that led to the War on Drugs as well as their outcomes, the dramatic shift in public opinion as states began to legalize marijuana, and the successes and failures of state cannabis programs to identify gaps within the MORE Act, the ideal policy, and politically viable incremental change. State programs are incapable of …

Safeguarding Adults At Risk: Critical Commentary On The Construction Of The Adult At Risk In Ireland, Susan Flynn Apr 2021

Safeguarding Adults At Risk: Critical Commentary On The Construction Of The Adult At Risk In Ireland, Susan Flynn

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Sociocultural constructions of the adult at risk prompt important theoretical and practical implications for adult safeguarding. Reformulations of the meaning of practice with adults at risk have been provoked by legislative, policy and procedural changes underway in the Irish context. These include the implementation of the Assisted Decision-Making Capacity Act (2015) with corresponding changes regarding informed consent and mental capacity; long anticipated ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCPRD) (United Nations, 2006); and advancement of the Adult Safeguarding Bill 2017. The concern is that procedural, legislative and policy advancement must not outpace critical …

Lobbying For Medicated Assisted Treatment In Montana, Asia Chhon, Mason Hutchinson, Taylor Hill, Alex Whaples, Kian Speck

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Despite spending more than any other county on incarceration and reentry programs, the United States continues to have some of the highest rates of reincarceration. Programs designed to teach inmates job skills, GED programs, and new Medicaid measures have proved moderately successful for reducing recidivism among certain offenders, but one class continues to suffer high recidivism rates. People imprisoned for opioid drug use are more likely to reoffend than any other group, but very few governments in different countries around the world have allotted the resources to establish effective treatment facilities, creating a cycle very few can escape. This project …

How Do Race And Gender Impact Perceptions Of The Wrongfully Convicted?, Talley Bettens, Amye Warren Apr 2021

How Do Race And Gender Impact Perceptions Of The Wrongfully Convicted?, Talley Bettens, Amye Warren

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

Official misconduct contributes to many wrongful convictions, disproportionately affecting more black than white individuals. Previous research on perceptions of exonerees has yielded mixed results on race differences and none has investigated gender differences. This study compared perceptions of exonerees, wrongfully convicted due to official misconduct, manipulating race and gender. Participants read a mock news article detailing the double homicide of the exoneree’s children. Participants recognized that official misconduct was more likely to occur for black individuals. They were generally supportive of compensation for exonerees but rated the white female as least deserving. Participants also held more favorable attitudes towards black …

When Your Identity Is Inherently "Unprofessional": Navigating Rules Of Professional Appearance Rooted In Cisheteronormative Whiteness As Black Women And Gender Non-Conforming Professionals, Shannon Cumberbatch

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

Several years ago, I attended my first large-scale career fair as a recruiter where I screened a mass of aspiring lawyers for staff attorney positions at my legal organization. During our brief break from marathon interviewing, my white colleagues shut down their tables to enjoy their downtime and as I prepared to do the same, I looked up to find a critical mass of Black women excitedly converging upon my interview station. Forming a half circle around my table, they began exclaiming how enamored they were by my appearance and how it countered much of the counseling they had …

Increasing Law Enforcement Understanding Of Special Needs And Disability Populations: The Role Of The Occupational Therapist, Rekha Tabjula

MOT Student Capstones

Incidences of fatalities and injuries among populations with disabilities continue to occur during police interactions. There is an increased need to address this concern with a new method, or reform, to training that has not allowed law enforcement to properly and safely engage with those who have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and mental health conditions. Occupational therapists can provide a collaborative approach to increasing law enforcement's awareness, knowledge, and confidence to these aforementioned 0 conditions.
