The Electoral Success And Representation Of Minorities: Different Cost Of Voting Scenarios, Shalisha M. Hill
The Electoral Success And Representation Of Minorities: Different Cost Of Voting Scenarios, Shalisha M. Hill
Honors Capstones
This research tests whether minorities are underrepresented in state legislatures due to restrictive state election laws that hinder voting. Some states like Oregon make it easier for citizens to vote and other states like Texas make it more difficult. The Cost of Voting Index (COVI) is a measurement of the electoral/institutional restrictiveness of each state and values are available for presidential election years from 1996 to 2020. Previous research has revealed that the amount of voting restrictions that citizens face makes it harder for them to vote (Li, Pomante Schraufnagel, 2018). What is less understood is whether restrictions hurt Blacks …

Parchman Farm Penitentiary Exists As Modern Day Slavery, Savannah Plaisted
Parchman Farm Penitentiary Exists As Modern Day Slavery, Savannah Plaisted
Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society
This research explores the connections between convict leasing in the state of Mississippi and the current state of prison labor at Parchman Farm Penitentiary (Mississippi State Penitentiary). The use of unpaid labor, the grossly disproportionate representation of Black men, the inhumane and grotesque conditions of the prison, the abnormally high death rate, and the continued execution of a disproportionate number of Black men of today’s Parchman Farm and the version of the prison at its initial founding in 1901 will be analyzed. All of these factors combined provide the foundation for the argument that slavery never ended in the state …

The Opportunities And Challenges Of Internet Of Things Evidence In Regard To Criminal Investigations, Nathan Mcclaran
The Opportunities And Challenges Of Internet Of Things Evidence In Regard To Criminal Investigations, Nathan Mcclaran
Honors Theses
As internet-connected devices become more prevalent, the need for police and law enforcement to be able to utilize these devices when solving crimes steadily increases. Law enforcement agencies are already aware of the opportunities and challenges when interacting with computers and mobile cellular devices, but many agencies are unable to utilize these avenues of evidence because of limited access to resources able to forensically examine computing devices. In addition, the introduction of internet of things devices, such as Amazon Alexa and other microphone or camera connected devices, allows new opportunities for law enforcement agencies to gather digital forensic evidence either …

"Coming For To Carry Me Home": Lessons For White Christians On The Integral Role Of Christian Faith In The Fight For Racial Justice In America From Slavery To #Blacklivesmatter, Mary J. Greenfield
Undergraduate Theses
In July 2020, the New York Times reported an increase of 15-26 million people across the United States engaging in #BlackLivesMatter protests. Blackout Tuesday, a social media movement aimed at showcasing solidarity with the movement for racial justice in America, amassed a total of 24 million posts on Instagram, making it easily one of the top hashtags of 2020. There is no doubt that 2020 was the year the Black Lives Matter movement witnessed the most engagement of white Americans since its inception in 2013. Despite this fact, there remains an inability for many white Christians to engage in the …

Transforming Impossible Into Possible (Tip) For Fatherhood: An Empowerment-Based Social Work Intervention, Philip Young P. Hong, Dara Lewis, Jang H. Park, Rana Hong, Ed Davies
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
The purpose of this study is to examine the psychological self-sufficiency (PSS) process among low-income men participating in the Transforming Impossible into Possible (TIP) program and explore the implications of TIP as a fatherhood intervention. Sample from 324 men participating in a community-based fatherhood initiative and four local job training programs in a large Midwestern city was used to examine the group differences in PSS as it relates to economic self-sufficiency (ESS). Men in the fatherhood TIP program and those in the general TIP program had significantly greater relationships between PSS and ESS than those in the non-TIP comparison group. …
Felony Disenfranchisement Through Rousseau's Social Contract, Blake Donohue
Felony Disenfranchisement Through Rousseau's Social Contract, Blake Donohue
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In America, 1 in 13 African Americans are disenfranchised. The history of felony disenfranchisement, as well as the cases often used when discussing the constitutionality of felon disenfranchisement policies, aligns with the history of racial discrimination in the United States. The disproportionate impact of felony disenfranchisement laws on African Americans makes such laws invalid if analyzed through Rousseau’s social contract.

Just Mercy: Mass Incarceration And The Death Penalty, Sophie Auerbach
Politics and International Relations Presentations
My poster will examine criticisms by Bryan Stevenson in his book Just Mercy. Stevenson points to problems in the U.S. Prison and Justice systems, including mass incarceration, racial bias and sentencing, unfair convictions, and why the use of the death penalty is an unjust and impractical form of punishment that should be abolished. My poster will summarize many of these problems, as well as examine supporting evidence and evaluate different proposals for criminal justice reform.

Forget doom and gloom. Let’s educate students about the Rights of Nature, an inspiring, evolving legal development which is gaining traction in the US and around the world, and which can promote the cultural shift needed to address our overlapping intersecting environmental crises — climate change, accelerating species extinction, and ecosystem collapse. The Rights of Nature is one aspect of Earth Law. Some of …

“Police Perceptions Amid The Black Lives Matter Movement”, Eadoin Grim
“Police Perceptions Amid The Black Lives Matter Movement”, Eadoin Grim
Honors Theses
In 2014, following the police-involved deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, researchers focused their attention on the existence of a “Ferguson Effect,” such that rising homicide rates could be attributed to a reduction in proactive policing due to concerns over heightened public scrutiny. While UCR data would eventually refute the existence of such an Effect, previous research has found that there does appear to be evidence of a perceptual belief in the Ferguson Effect among municipal officers. To date, very little research concerning officer perceptions or experiences has been conducted with campus police departments, creating a substantial gap in …

The Center for the Human Rights of Children (CHRC), in collaboration with signatory organizations, submits this input in response to the call for submissions made by the Special Rapporteur’s Report on the Role of Organized Criminal Groups with regard to Contemporary Forms of Slavery to inform the forthcoming report to the 76th session of the General Assembly. This input will focus upon the role of organized criminal groups with regard to child labor trafficking (forced labor), and specifically, forced criminality as a form of forced labor.1 We provide input on cases both in the interior of the United States, and …
Community Violence And Code Of The Streets: A Person-Centered Examination Of General Strain Theory, Hannah Corinne Gilliam
Community Violence And Code Of The Streets: A Person-Centered Examination Of General Strain Theory, Hannah Corinne Gilliam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Anderson’s code of the streets (COS) model outlines one potential response to high community violence exposure (CVE) in which individuals regard physical violence as an effective means to maintain respect and reduce victimization. Previous research has separately linked CVE, strong negative emotions, and low social support to greater violence, and suggests these factors may also relate to acceptability of violence. The current study used these factors to derive empirically-driven profilesin a latent profile analysis, and examined the relationships between theseprofiles and COS adherence among 694 undergraduates (Mage=20.72; 81.0% female; 57.1% White).A 4-class model emerged as the best fit:High Community Violence …
