Basic Police Officer Training In The U.S., Bryan Cammerino May 2021

Basic Police Officer Training In The U.S., Bryan Cammerino

Theses

Policing in America has grown to become a topic of paramount interest within society today. This interest has included increased attention to the role that the police play within local communities. Gaining a greater understanding of where policing started, how it has evolved, and where it is today can help us better understand the importance of police officer training. Focusing on Americas policing eras and various policing models will establish a precedent to explain why policing is the way it is today. This paper will then be able to pinpoint various current events that make the history of policing come …

Introducing The Principles And Practice Of Restorative Justice: Reactions From A Generalist Audience, Grace Michels May 2021

Introducing The Principles And Practice Of Restorative Justice: Reactions From A Generalist Audience, Grace Michels

Undergraduate Theses

Legislative activity and public opinion polling, among other indicators, suggests there is growing support for change in how our justice system functions. As the country begins to look for other tools and more knowledge of different practices, a key challenge will be bridging the gap between the public’s general support for a new path moving forward and a clear picture of what that path could look like. The goal of this project was to help propel this movement toward exploring justice alternatives forward by making this knowledge accessible and persuasive. As such, this project involved the creation of a material …

You Are Not Welcome Here: Sloterdijk’S Posthumanism And The Rhetoric Of Hostile Urban Architecture And Design, Brandon William Aungst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation brings together three scholarship areas: rhetorical theory and analysis, hostile urban architecture and design, and Sloterdijk’s version of posthumanism. I synthesize these complementary areas to address the following questions: How do architecture and design contribute to the rhetorical meaning-making of being human and facilitate the communication of that meaning to others? How do different types of architecture and design produce the material contexts for conceptualizing what humanness means and contribute to the development of fore-structures for interpreting and communicating that humanness (e.g., hostile architecture and barbed wire)? How can we conceptualize various types of architecture and design, or …

Handle With Care: Domestic Violence Safety Planning In The Age Of Data Privacy Laws, Jenny Wu May 2021

Handle With Care: Domestic Violence Safety Planning In The Age Of Data Privacy Laws, Jenny Wu

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

The United States has been patiently waiting for a comprehensive federal data privacy law to protect consumers. However, strong data privacy laws can also protect a less thought-about group: survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence. As new technology proliferates into our daily lives, technology-based abuse is quickly becoming a common form of intimate partner abuse. Domestic violence survivors and advocates have to stay extra vigilant about who has access to their internet data. Needing to understand technology-specific safety measures and learn technology-literacy skills adds more work to already overwhelmed domestic violence advocates and survivors. Could the law serve …

The Effects Of Legalization Of Recreational Cannabis In Illinois, Stephanie Chambers-Baltz May 2021

The Effects Of Legalization Of Recreational Cannabis In Illinois, Stephanie Chambers-Baltz

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

In 2019, the Illinois House passed the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act that legalized the recreational use of cannabis. The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act became law in the state of Illinois as of January 1, 2020, making Illinois the first state to establish such a law via state legislation, as opposed to a ballot measure approved by voters. This law allows adults aged 21 and older to legally purchase cannabis for recreational purposes. This law has significant implications for social equity and for public health. The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act was intentionally designed to address and repair some …

The Journey To Crime For Drug Offenders, Jennifer Schmitz May 2021

The Journey To Crime For Drug Offenders, Jennifer Schmitz

Theses

When a person wants to purchase drugs, they are not going to randomly choose a location, many factors will impact their location choice. A seller may choose to sell drugs in an area with abandoned buildings and a lack of natural lighting to avoid being seen. A drug buyer may choose a location that is close to other places they frequent such as home or work. However, the proximity to these locations may also cause a co-worker or neighbor to identify them, so they may travel a distance from their home before seeking drugs.

To understand how drug buyers and …

Education For Healthcare Providers, Nurses, And The Public On Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia, Jenny Greene May 2021

Education For Healthcare Providers, Nurses, And The Public On Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia, Jenny Greene

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

This project evaluated the knowledge of the public, healthcare providers, and nurses regarding opioid induced hyperalgesia (OIH). OIH is an elevated pain response because of high dosage or chronic use of opioids. Opioids are a problem not only in the United States but throughout the world; addiction, constipation, and overdose are the most frequently mentioned consequences of opioids. Little is known about other consequences to the body caused by chronic or high dose opioid usage, such as OIH. This project sought to increase awareness and caution against the utilization of opioids by patients and their healthcare providers and nurses practice. …

When Crime Moves Where Does It Go? Analyzing The Spatial Correlates Of Robbery Incidents When Crime Moves Where Does It Go? Analyzing The Spatial Correlates Of Robbery Incidents Displaced By A Place-Based Policing Interventiondisplaced By A Place-Based Policing Intervention, David N. Hatten, Eric L. Piza

Publications and Research

Objective:

Examine the place-based correlates of robbery incidents displaced by a foot-patrol intervention in Newark, NJ. We use constructs from Crime Pattern and Social Disorganization theories to test hypotheses concerned with associations between the structure of the environment and the displacement of crime.

Method:

Robbery incidents were spatially joined to street segments to study micro-level displacement processes. Predictor variables were operationalized using data from the Newark Police Department and Infogroup USA. Generalized Linear models tested associations between the characteristics of street segments and displaced robbery in the target area as compared to a control.

Results:

Environmental structure is important to …

Increasing Patient Access To Medication-Assisted Treatment Programs For Opioid Use Disorder, Matthew J. Bednarchik

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The project sought to explore the perceived need for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder among primary care providers in a rural central Illinois county. This project’s primary goal was to measure the prevalence of OUD in the community and the likelihood of primary care providers referring to an outpatient MAT program. A secondary objective was to utilize the survey results as a tool for the development of a MAT program. A cohort of twenty-five primary care providers were invited to participate in a survey to assess the perceived prevalence of OUD as well as the need for increased …

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The city of Baltimore is known for its beautiful harbor, distinct neighborhoods, unique museums and the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital. Most notably, however, Baltimore is known for its delicious choices of crabs and other types of seafood. It is not Maryland’s capital, but it is Maryland’s biggest city and economic hub. The Inner Harbor, Baltimore biggest tourist attraction, is also one of America’s major import and export stations. However, it wasn’t always like this. After World War II, the city lost so much in population and business it became as financially depressed as it had been during the Great Depression. …

A Look Into Wrongful Conviction Within The U.S. Justice System, Isabella T. Likos May 2021

A Look Into Wrongful Conviction Within The U.S. Justice System, Isabella T. Likos

The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University

The United States justice system has principles in place in order to prevent wrongful convictions such as the presumption of innocence and having to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. However, even with these principles in places there are times that people are wrongfully convicted. There are multiple reasons why wrongful conviction occur, including false confessions and erroneous eyewitness testimony. Wrongful conviction impacts not only the wrongfully convicted, but their family, friends, and the victims. While wrongful convictions do happen, there are steps that can be taken going forward that can help prevent them and exonerate the wrongfully convicted.
