Using Visual Storytelling To Design Solutions-Based Approaches To Homelessness, Peggy Peattie
Using Visual Storytelling To Design Solutions-Based Approaches To Homelessness, Peggy Peattie
Dissertations
Despite millions of dollars spent over several decades on assistance programs, the nation’s homeless population has increased for the last four years in a row. The number of people reporting as homeless for the first time doubled in San Diego between June 2019 and June 2020. Trying to impose a one-size-fits-all model of care on a population comprised of unique individuals has resulted in many homeless opting for the street rather than subjugating themselves to rules they feel do not treat them with respect and dignity. Yet, the perspectives of homeless individuals are excluded from decision-making dialogue around policies and …

Indonesia Criminal Law Review
Chemical castration sanctions were applied in Indonesia through Law No. 17 of 2016 on the Second Amendment to Law No. 23 of 2002 on Child Protection. Since 2016 until now in 2021 there has only been 1 (one) Judge’s Decision on additional chemical castration sanctions imposed on perpetrators of child sexual abuse, namely the Verdict of PN Mojokerto No. 69/Pid.sus/2019/PN.Mjk, May 2, 2019. The verdict provoked a strong reaction from human rights observers. The Impelementation Regulation on Procedures for the Implementation of Chemical Castration, Installation of Electronic Detection Devices, Rehabilitation, and Announcement of the Identity of Perpetrators of Sexual Violence …

Principle Of Simple, Speedy, And Low-Cost Trial And The Problem Of Asset Recovery In Indonesia, Febby Mutiara Nelson, Topo Santoso
Indonesia Law Review
This article discusses whether simple, speedy and low-cost principles have been implemented in the criminal justice in Indonesia and the obstacles faced by the Indonesian criminal justice system, especially in terms of returning state losses due to corruption cases. The findings indicate that such principles are yet to be effectively implemented in the criminal justice system in Indonesia. Some obvious issues have emerged as an area for attention; first, that law enforcement in corruption cases takes a long time, remains complicated, and is also high-priced. Second, there are a number of obstacles confronted by the Indonesian criminal justice system, especially …

Taking The Measure Of Addiction Recovery: A Brief History Of Recovery Capital, Austin Brown
Taking The Measure Of Addiction Recovery: A Brief History Of Recovery Capital, Austin Brown
Population Health Research Brief Series
Drug overdose and alcohol-related deaths continue to rise in the United States. Despite the billions of dollars spent on drug and alcohol treatment annually, the U.S has failed to properly deal with addiction. This brief discusses the concept of ‘recovery capital’ as an important theoretical advancement in the field of addiction treatment. It argues that health policies should promote personal, social, community and cultural capital to increase recovery success and measure an individual’s capacity to heal from a substance use disorder.

Indonesia Law Review
This article aims to examine what the pre-trial judges consider in determining whether a suspect's determination is legal. The basis of the reason "not based on the provisions and legal procedures in force" is a pre-trial petition. Including examining whether the Notification Letter for the Commencement of Investigation has not been submitted to the Reported Party and the Reporting Party, it can be used as a basis for the judge's consideration to judge the legality of the determination of the suspect. This article uses a legal research method through a statutory, conceptual, and case approach. This article finds that after …
The Experiences Of Cohort Membership In An Alternative Certification Program, Roxanne Marie Sanchez
The Experiences Of Cohort Membership In An Alternative Certification Program, Roxanne Marie Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Employing and retaining teachers has been a rising problem affecting employment at school districts. Nationwide school districts have noted high instances of teacher shortages and are finding it more difficult to fill positions with traditionally trained teachers. In the 2019-2020 school year, at a local district in South Florida, it was assessed that 56% of new teachers to the district were of a noneducation background or career changers.
Retention of this subgroup of teachers is pertinent to reducing teacher attrition, specifically within the school districts that most frequently employ them. Certificate expiration, due to not completing their certification requirements within …

Misunderstood: A Phenomenological Study On Intersectionality And The Lived Experiences Of Black Millennial Student Affairs Professionals At Pwis, Emily P. Dixon
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation was designed to further understand the lived experiences of Black millennial student affairs professionals navigating and advancing through a predominately white institution in the southern United States. This phenomenological study, framed by critical race theory and intersectionality, sought to ultimately use these lived experiences to advocate for change. A review of the literature highlighted the needs, values, and experiences of Black Millennials based on both identities, the experiences of working in student affairs/higher education with these experiences, and the need for intentional diversity efforts by higher educational institutions.
The researcher interviewed nine participants to learn more about …

Replacing The Cd With A Cassette Tape And Other Foundational Considerations Brought Upon By Remote Justice, Renee Danser
Replacing The Cd With A Cassette Tape And Other Foundational Considerations Brought Upon By Remote Justice, Renee Danser
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
I once knew a couple who bought a brand new car but asked to remove the CD player and replace it with a cassette tape player. The couple thought the CD was just a fad. Putting aside that the CD is now obsolete (and the cassette tape before it), and some adult readers will not know what CDs were in the first place, those of us that do will chuckle at this choice. During the peak of the pandemic, justice moved completely online. As society contemplates a return to normal, the justice system considers whether to sustain those remote processes …

A Sociolegal Perspective To Legal Research In The Digital Field: A Methodological Proposition (Penelitian Hukum Berperspektif Sosiolegal Pada Ranah Digital: Satu Tawaran Metodologis), Lidwina Inge Nurtjahyo
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
Technological developments have brought people, capital, goods, ideas, and even laws into mobility. During the Covid-19 pandemic, technology made mobility possible. Adaptation to pandemic situations occurs by changing physical interactions into interactions in the digital space with the help of technology. These changes also bring consequences to changes in the way of society's law. For example, digital transactions no longer require the presence of a customer or online trials. The challenge that arises then is how to find the method to conduct legal research during the pandemic situation. One of the options presents is socio-legal research conducted digitally. The focal …

The State In Private Security: Examining Mexico City’S Complementary Police, Logan Puck
All Faculty Scholarship
This study investigates the participation of the Mexico City government in the private security market through the Policía Complementaria (Complementary Police), a grouping of public police forces that provide protection to clients in exchange for a fee. By providing these forces with special powers and advantages, the state can outcompete traditional private security firms and profit handsomely. The state’s encroachment into the market for security raises concerns about democracy, inequality, and policing. Moreover, it challenges traditional conceptions about the relationship between the state and private security.

Impact Of Parental Involvement On Serious Juvenile Offenders' Views Of Police Legitimacy With Parental Incarceration As A Moderator, Kyler Brinkley
Student Theses and Dissertations
The trust between the public and the police is a foundation of exemplary community law enforcement. Tensions between the public and police are at historic highs, so understanding what impacts attitudes toward the police is essential. Comprehending juveniles’ attitudes toward the police before they become adults can illuminate an issue beforehand. The current study aims to explore the impact of informal social controls on serious juvenile offenders’ views of police legitimacy. This study uses data from the Pathways to Desistance Study data set to examine how informal social controls, such as parental involvement, influence serious juvenile offenders’ perceptions of the …

Jurnal Kajian Bimbingan dan Konseling
This study aims to develop a peace guidebook as a medium for school counselors in reducing student aggressiveness. The research employed research and development design proposed by Borg and Gall model, which includes identifying aggressive needs and problems, drafting a hypothetical product, and expert and user assessment of the product. The data analysis technique used descriptive analysis to describe the level of aggressiveness. In addition, this study uses Cohens Kappa’s inter-rater reliability (IRR) coefficient to identify expert and user agreement on product feasibility. The results of the descriptive analysis show that aggressiveness needs more attention from school counselors, one of …
When ‘Inside-Out’ Goes ‘Upside-Down’: Teaching Students In A Jail Environment During The Covid Pandemic And Implications For The Use Of Correctional Technology Post-Pandemic, Kimberly Collica-Cox
When ‘Inside-Out’ Goes ‘Upside-Down’: Teaching Students In A Jail Environment During The Covid Pandemic And Implications For The Use Of Correctional Technology Post-Pandemic, Kimberly Collica-Cox
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
The transient population of county jails pose unique challenges for program implementation and maintenance. This past year, the spread of COVID-19 substantially increased such challenges, particularly since most correctional institutions are opposed to using Internet-based technologies, such as Zoom, in the secure part of their institution. Although college programming is rare in most jails, Inside-Out type classes, which allow college students to take a credited course alongside the incarcerated in a correctional setting, is a great way to provide a missed opportunity for purposeful intervention for the incarcerated, while providing a unique experiential learning opportunity for traditional undergraduate students. Based …

Bridging The Divide: Community Centers As A Catalyst Of Socioeconomic Opportunity Cultivation For At-Risk Youth, Grayson Bourke
Capstone Projects – Politics and Government
The East Bluff Community Center (EBCC)’s mission is to “foster community engagement and neighborhood stabilization by providing a vibrant place to gather.” This paper seeks to shed light on the role that community centers play in creating socioeconomic opportunities for at-risk youth in low-income, American communities. The author completed an 11-month internship through Illinois State University’s Stevenson Center in which I was placed as a Community Engagement Coordinator at the EBCC. While at EBCC, I conducted a neighborhood needs assessment, strengthened existing and built new interorganizational partnerships, and launched a building revitalization within the context of the Integrated Prevention and …

Painting Outside Of The Lines: How Race Assignment Can Be Rethought Through Art, Giovanni Mella-Velazquez
Painting Outside Of The Lines: How Race Assignment Can Be Rethought Through Art, Giovanni Mella-Velazquez
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
For centuries art has been used to make us think about our own human experiences. Unfortunately, works usually reflect the era which they were painted in; this has led to various artists showing, maintaining, and therefore reinforcing racist thoughts in our cultures. Art can be used to create a new narrative for our race assignments and their meanings. The idea of loving one's roots has been prevalent in many cultures, but in art form a disconnect between history and the everyday experience can arise which could miss the mark in helping us redefine our own race. Therefore, artwork which empowers …

Sanctuary In The City Of Brotherly Love: Probing The Effectiveness And Broader Implications Of Philadelphia’S Sanctuary City Policies, Thomas A. Koenig
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
Amidst the already fraught politics of immigration, “sanctuary” policies, whereby state and local law enforcement agencies limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement authorities to varying degrees, have emerged as a particularly contentious issue. This paper sifts past the political vitriol surrounding the issue of “sanctuary” and uses original survey research in Philadelphia to answer a straightforward question: Are these policies working? That is, are the city of Philadelphia’s sanctuary policies actually building trust between its undocumented residents and local law enforcement, thereby laying the groundwork for higher rates of crime reporting and safer communities? My results from a survey …

Aung San Suu Kyi’S Defensive Denial Of The Rohingya Massacre: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Denial And Positive-Image Construction, Idhamsyah Eka Putra, Hema Preya Selvanathan, Ali Mashuri, Cristina Jayme Montiel
Psychology Department Faculty Publications
In December 2019, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accused the Myanmar government of genocide against Rohingya Muslims. Represented by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar authorities denied such accusations. To understand how a political leader can deny ingroup wrongdoings, we unpacked Suu Kyi’s ICJ speech and analyzed her defensive rhetorical style through critical narrative analysis. We aimed to identify and describe the denial strategies Suu Kyi used as well as how she maintained a positive ingroup image to support her position. Our findings showed that Suu Kyi engaged in interpretative denial of genocide by arguing that …
