Crisis And Cultural Evolution: Steering The Next Normal From Self-Interest To Concern And Fairness, Robert A. Bohrer
Crisis And Cultural Evolution: Steering The Next Normal From Self-Interest To Concern And Fairness, Robert A. Bohrer
Faculty Scholarship
This essay examines the current time of crisis and offers a vision of the way in which our society and our law can evolve in response. Crises of this scale are evolution-forcing events and I argue that the current moment can move us towards a fundamentally different vision of law and justice. It is the first essay or article to show that the autonomous pursuit of self-interest was a common assumption or value in the major intellectual forces of the twentieth century: classical free market economics, behavioral economics, and sociobiology, as well as in the competing visions of a just …

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion
Chapter 21: Scientific Practice and Democratic Values
Democracy and science, it might be thought, go hand in hand. As we commonly think of it, science has its roots in the heritage of Greek thought, and the same is true of democracy. And while Athenian democracy developed at best a complicated relationship with its intellectual luminaries, Athens was nevertheless home to both Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s Lyceum. Nearly two centuries later, the scientific revolution most quickly took root in those nations that had come to have some semblance of democratic rule. While the Republic of Florence had passed under Medici control …
Stopping Climate Change: Investigating The Effects Of Perceived Issue Importance And Environmental Messaging On Pro-Environmental Behavior Compliance Intention, M. Ryan Nugent
UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses
Climate change is an undeniably anthropogenic issue that is beginning to create irreversible damages (United Nations, 2019). Researchers have investigated various mechanisms that push for individuals to perform behaviors that aim to mitigate climate change (Kronrod et al., 2012; Spelt et al., 2019). Perceived issue importance and environmental message framing have been shown to be possible influencing variables in coercing individuals to comply with performing pro-environmental behaviors. The present study seeks to investigate how both perceived issue importance and environmental messaging effect individuals’ likelihood of performing a rather understudied climate change mitigation behavior (decreasing meat consumption) by directly adapting a …

Cracking Self-Defense’S Intractable “Difficult Cases”, T. Markus Funk Ph.D.
Cracking Self-Defense’S Intractable “Difficult Cases”, T. Markus Funk Ph.D.
Nebraska Law Review
The “ancient right” of self-defense is among the handful of criminal law areas that has received substantial academic (and increasingly public) attention, and deservedly so, given the foundational role it plays in criminal justice systems the world over. The current debate about over-policing, violence, and self-defense has vividly brought to the forefront the challenges inherent in setting boundaries between the state’s claimed “monopoly on force” and the individual’s right to deploy self-preferential violence against an attacker. But, as this Article points out, by continuing to overlook the role values and value judgments play in guiding “just” self-defense outcomes, the bedrock …

Assessing the credibility of research claims is a central, continuous, and laborious part of the scientific process. Credibility assessment strategies range from expert judgment to aggregating existing evidence to systematic replication efforts. Such assessments can require substantial time and effort. Research progress could be accelerated if there were rapid, scalable, accurate credibility indicators to guide attention and resource allocation for further assessment. The SCORE program is creating and validating algorithms to provide confidence scores for research claims at scale. To investigate the viability of scalable tools, teams are creating: a database of claims from papers in the social and behavioral …
Opinion Dynamics Of Stubborn Agents Under The Presence Of A Troll Asdifferential Game, Aykut Yildiz, Ari̇f Bülent Özgüler
Opinion Dynamics Of Stubborn Agents Under The Presence Of A Troll Asdifferential Game, Aykut Yildiz, Ari̇f Bülent Özgüler
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The question of whether opinions of stubborn agents result in Nash equilibrium under the presence of troll is investigated in this study. The opinion dynamics is modelled as a differential game played by n agents during a finite time horizon. Two types of agents, ordinary agents and troll, are considered in this game. Troll is treated as a malicious stubborn content maker who disagrees with every other agent. On the other hand, ordinary agents maintain cooperative communication with other ordinary agents and they disagree with the troll. Under this scenario, explicit expressions of opinion trajectories are obtained by applying Pontryagin?s …

Exploring Change And Continuities In Internationally Mobile Pre-Service Teachers’ Conceptualisations Of Effective Teaching, Rhonda Di Biase, Elizabeth King, Jeana Kriewaldt, Catherine Reid, Mahtab Janfada
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
: This qualitative study investigates the changes and continuities in conceptions of teaching and learning from course commencement to course completion for a group of international pre-service teachers undertaking a two-year Masters-level degree in Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Data were collected through a series of graphic elicitation activities and ranking tasks at baseline and endpoint. Findings indicate that there was: a growing emphasis on student engagement and its linkages to student learning; a shift from viewing teaching as the transfer of knowledge to learning as an active process; and a more developed repertoire of professional language to explain what is …

Students' Transitions Into Initial Teacher Education: Understanding Barriers And Enablers Through An Ecological Lens, Diana L. Amundsen, Nadine Ballam, Katrina Mcchesney
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper presents a small-scale qualitative investigation which explored early first-year transition experiences of pre-service teacher students. The study took place in one university in Aotearoa New Zealand, involving 24 students and three co-researchers from a Faculty of Education. Perceptions of students’ transition experiences were gathered through an essay task six weeks into the first semester; data were analysed using Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological theory to identify barriers and enablers related to students’ transition experiences in various contexts. Diverse transitions accounts of ‘becoming a pre-service teacher student’ were analysed as being complex and intertwined with historical, social, cultural and political elements. …

Learning Transformation Perceptions Of Preservice Second Career Teachers, Shosh Leshem, Rivi Carmel, Merav Badash, Beverley Topaz
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Teachers’ shortage has become a critical issue in most countries in the world. One of the solutions has been the initiation of short-term teacher education programmes which attract adult career changers who enter the programme with prior working experiences and world knowledge. However, the process of transferring previous knowledge is challenging and teachers need to navigate new horizons. The aim of the study is to identify shifts in students’ perceptions regarding the teaching profession, and what experiences prompted the shifts. The research was conducted among 15 students in a teacher education college in Israel. The analysis of interviews exposed five …

Fostering Values Through Authentic Storytelling, Maya Gunawardena, Bernard Brown
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Stories are used for diverse pedagogical purposes. Storytelling is a culturally inclusive and widely used pedagogical technique. However, the success of storytelling interventions in education can be dependent upon how teachers engage students to analyse experiences, and events to gain deeper insights to influence change in their thinking and behaviour. This paper firstly provides a literature review which synthesises Australian Curriculum content and outcome-based approaches used in values education in primary schools including storytelling. Secondly, it offers a novel taxonomy supported by a pedagogical model for storytelling. The proposed pedagogical model contains a constructivist process that can enable teachers to …

How Constructivist Theories Of Development Can Be Used To Re-Conceptualise Naplan As An Opportunity To Develop Student Resilience, Robert M. Vanderburg, Paul Trotter
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Teachers have come under increased pressure to improve educational outcomes as Australia has sought to meet the challenges of competing on an international level. This intensified pressure has been accompanied by improved levels of funding, a National Curriculum for all Australian states, and territories, along with assessments to measure these key outcomes. However, this increased level of scrutiny has affected the pedagogical choices of teachers. Traditional modes of instruction have been reinforced, with teachers moving away from effective constructivist approaches to learning. This article will propose that a reinterpretation of constructivist theories of development is needed to arrest this decline, …
Teacher Perceptions Of Student Developmental Needs: It’S All Emotional, Elizabeth Hinchcliff, Melissa A. Newberry
Teacher Perceptions Of Student Developmental Needs: It’S All Emotional, Elizabeth Hinchcliff, Melissa A. Newberry
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Previous research has suggested that emotional and social developmental domains configure most prominently for adolescents in the classroom. In this qualitative study, we first aimed to explore teachers’ perspectives of students’ needs, then to explore the ways that teachers came to understand those needs, and how that understanding informed their practice of attending to student needs in the classroom. Findings suggest that teachers, also, are more attuned to the emotional domain, interpreting all needs displayed by students through an emotional lens. Additionally, teachers used emotion as an entry point to connect with students and sought to support student development through …
Educational Policies And Schooling For Arabic Speaking Refugee Children In Australia And Turkey, Nina Maadad, Munube Yilmaz
Educational Policies And Schooling For Arabic Speaking Refugee Children In Australia And Turkey, Nina Maadad, Munube Yilmaz
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper aims to compare refugee settlement and education policies between two geographically and culturally distinct nations, Australia and Turkey. Due to its geographical position in the Middle East, Turkey now hosts millions of refugees especially following the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. Australia also has a long history of hosting and supporting refugees from many countries and the Arabic-speaking nations are no exception. Conducting a comparative historical analysis, this study aims to fill the gap in our knowledge about the education policies and practices of both countries. Based on the expectations and needs of refugee students, …

The Professional Profile Of Teachers Working With Roma Students Based On Their Perceptions Of Cultural Diversity. A Study In Compulsory Education, M. Carmen López-López, Clemente Rodríguez-Sabiote, Stefania La Malfa
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Encouraging inclusive and intercultural education has become one of the key objectives for a number of international organisations and educational systems. However, moving towards this goal is impossible without the collaboration of teachers as their perceptions influence the way they organise and carry out their professional activities. The aim of this paper is to define the professional profile of compulsory education teachers working with Roma students in the Italian city of Messina. It is based on a study of their perceptions of cultural diversity and involves 182 teachers responsible for teaching students in the first cycle of compulsory education (6-14 …
“Why I Don’T Teach As I Was Trained”: Vietnamese Early Career Esol Teachers’ Experience Of Reality Shock, Vu Tran-Thanh
“Why I Don’T Teach As I Was Trained”: Vietnamese Early Career Esol Teachers’ Experience Of Reality Shock, Vu Tran-Thanh
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Trained intensively in teaching English for communication, beginning Vietnamese ESOL teachers still follow the traditional approach in their classroom, i.e., teaching for grammar-and-vocabulary exams. This contrast in pedagogical practices is caused by “reality shock”, which happens for most teachers during the first few years into teaching. The current study aims to explore how reality shock influences and transforms early career ESOL teachers’ teaching methodologies. It employs an interpretative case study research design to outline both external and internal factors that characterize reality shock. The results show that besides English education policy, students’ cooperativeness and professional support, the participants were also …
More Than Colleagues: Understanding International Higher Education Partnerships During Crisis, Christina M. Kinney
More Than Colleagues: Understanding International Higher Education Partnerships During Crisis, Christina M. Kinney
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Higher education is now globally connected. While a positive development, such connections make international partnerships susceptible to global and regional crises. This study focused on a consortium partnership called the Cooperation on Higher Education and Professional Development (CHEPD) program. This study examined how international colleagues in China and the United States co-manage partnership challenges using a network approach to social capital theory. Such an approach helps to understand how administrators navigate relational resources by describing the consortium’s network composition. This study used a mixed-methods approach with a social network analysis to supplement the qualitative relational data. The literature shows that …
Hegemonizing The Ajat Indu In Sarawak, Malaysia, Andrew Igai Jamu, Premalatha Thiagarajan
Hegemonizing The Ajat Indu In Sarawak, Malaysia, Andrew Igai Jamu, Premalatha Thiagarajan
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This article discusses the reinvention of women’s dance tradition, Ajat Indu by Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS), a socio-cultural association established for Sarawak’s Ibans in East Malaysia. SIDS aims to standardize, codify, and refine the dance form for tourism and promoting the culture of Iban. Using the concept of cultural hegemony by Antonio Gramsci, this essay examines the role played by SIDS as the hegemonic organization that governs Ajat Indu to the extent that the institutionalization of Ajat Indu was forced to be accepted by the Iban people as a cultural norm. Although such, there is a form of active …

Markets And The City : Planning Interventions & Markets In Guwahati City, India, Taz Mazinder Barua
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Older cities pre-existing the founding of modern Guwahati city were important trade centers in the Indian eastern region. From the nineteenth century, the colonial regime began reorganizing the spaces in Indian urban centers through town planning schemes. The article investigates how town planning schemes and modern urban planning in Guwahati city changed the forms and locations of the public markets with the city’s outwards expansion. An exploratory approach was taken to review the archival and documentary material available on Guwahati’s public markets, including the publicly available historical maps and master plans to understand the public rationale for the changes. Opening The American University: African American, Latino/A, And Women's Activism In Higher Education And Postwar Politics, 1964-1985, Jillian Elizabeth Mcclure
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
After the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, student and faculty activists at public, flagship universities used existing civil rights organizations and founded new activist groups to bring attention to barriers that hindered their equal power and participation within higher education. African Americans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and women created grassroots campaigns and worked within institutional structures to reform universities between 1964 and 1985. Activists worked separately and across gender, racial, and ethnic lines in attempts to gain authority, power, and self-determination within the university system. Students and faculty asserted that flagship universities needed to serve the needs …
Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong
Agency, Responsibility, And Actor Positioning In Courtroom Narratives, Krisda Chaemsaithong
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Viewing language as a system consisting of grammatical resources for meaning making, this study explores how agency and responsibility are attributed in legal narratives through the lens of transitivity. Drawing upon the opening address of three American trials, the quantitative and qualitative findings indicate that agency and blameworthiness of the individuals on trial are discursively negotiated through starkly different grammatical choices, so that polarized positionings of the same social actors and events are accomplished for the audience. It is argued that such manipulation of grammatical resources exhibits subjective intervention on the part of the presenter and constitutes a prime mechanism …
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Aurelio Tolentino (1869–1915) is best remembered as the first nationalist dramatist who was in and out of prison because of his mutinous writings. His five extant novels manifest the sociopolitical struggle of early 20th-century Filipinos from the worldview of a versatile author. Tolentino’s fiction from 1909 to 1914 unveils how the colonized adapted ingrained, rigid, and conventional Spanish influences to the liberal and materialistic scheme imposed by the United States. A sociohistorical approach was used to investigate Tolentino’s narratives, revealing a people with a pliant but firm character brought about by their four centuries of subjugation. The literary method used …
The Unmet Needs Of Academic Support Services For Students At Holmes Community College On The Goodman Campus, Karen Ray
