When A Ban Is Not A Ban: Institutional Work And The Russian Doping Scandal, Mathew Dowling, Spencer Harris, Marvin Washington Dec 2021

When A Ban Is Not A Ban: Institutional Work And The Russian Doping Scandal, Mathew Dowling, Spencer Harris, Marvin Washington

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

There are fewer cases of such blatant acts to defy and subsequent heroic efforts to rearrange institutional norms than the Russian doping scandal. In adopting a neo-institutional perspective, the authors theorize the scandal as a case of attempted but failed institutional disruption. More specifically, the authors draw upon the institutional change literature and the institutional work perspective to explain the key events surrounding actors’ response to the scandal. The analysis utilized Gioia’s methodological approach to examine secondary empirical data. Findings reveal how stakeholders circumvented traditional governance structures in an attempt to disrupt institutional arrangements, but despite this, much of the …

Going Beyond The Data: Using Testimonies To Humanize Pedagogy On Black Health, Keisha S Ray Dec 2021

Going Beyond The Data: Using Testimonies To Humanize Pedagogy On Black Health, Keisha S Ray

Faculty and Staff Publications

When health professions learners' primary pedagogical experience of Black people and how they become patients is through statistics, it becomes very easy for learners to think of Black people as data points rather than as individuals whose health is often at the mercy of racist institutions. When the human dimension of Black people's health is ignored, specifically the ways that poor health affects individual wellbeing, one of the barriers to proper health for Black patients is how to be seen and considered as a part of a larger problem of systemic racism and institutional injustices as well as individuals whose …

The Inequitable Consequences Of School Disciplinary Policies On Black Girls In Ohio, Terry Husband, Shamaine Bertrand

Journal of Global Education and Research

Studies have examined the effects of school disciplinary policies and practices on Black boys. Much of this research highlights the degree to which many of these disciplinary policies and practices have affected Black boys in P-12 contexts in negative ways. A small and emerging body of scholarship has begun to investigate the effects of school discipline policies and practices in P-12 contexts on Black girls. The focus of this study was to investigate the effects of disciplinary policies on Black girls in comparison to girls from other races in the 15 largest school districts in Ohio. Drawing from recent out-of-school …

Why Study Abroad: Differences In Motivation Between Us And International Students, Phillip Haisley, Catherine Grandorff, Osasohan Agbonlahor, Sylvia L. Mendez, Mandy Hansen

Journal of Global Education and Research

Globally, collegiate students possess distinct drives, opportunities, and constraints that influence their choices regarding if, when, and where to study abroad. This research explored the study abroad motivations of US students who were studying in other countries as well as international students who were studying in the US. Data was collected using a cross-sectional survey constructed from pre-existing study abroad motivation instruments. Human capital theory and the push-pull model of international education flow were used as the theoretical frameworks grounding this study’s survey. A principal components analysis helped determine the most parsimonious number of latent motivation constructs in the survey. …

An Examination Of Parental Temperament And Rearrest Among A Sample Of Serious Adolescent Offenders, Lina Maria Jackson

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The relationship of child to parent, is one that has continuously been regarded as an impactful and important one. Parents are often held responsible for the character of their child as well as being responsible for their actions. Whether or not the parental relationship plays a part in an adolescent's re-arrest is what this paper aims to find, specifically looking at parental temperament. In order to lower the rate of rearrests it is important to unpack the factors that contribute to recidivism and where it may begin. This paper examines an adolescent’s rate of rearrest and analyzes if parental temperament …

Gender Norms And Their Impact, Sarah Shirdon

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

This study examines how gender norms/stereotypes affect people and the different ways these expectations manifest in society. This scholarship shows how media, school, careers, and other sources are indicated to greatly impact the enforcement of stereotypes. It also presents the way people’s behavior is encouraged and discouraged to conform to the norms affecting overall productivity, performance, psychological well-being, and physical well-being. Studies have also shown a correlation in the future careers that are pursued by men and women in relation to the social norms imposed throughout development. The results in this study reveal a shortage of gender diversity in career …

Settlement Patterns And Urbanization In The Yautepec Valley Of Central Mexico, Timothy S. Hare Dec 2021

Settlement Patterns And Urbanization In The Yautepec Valley Of Central Mexico, Timothy S. Hare

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We carried out a full-coverage survey of the Yautepec Valley in the 1990s to reconstruct demography and settlements and their changes through time. We investigated the extent to which well-documented developments in the adjacent Basin of Mexico were paralleled in Yautepec, as well as the impact of regional empires and economies on local society. Our analyses focused on Teotihuacan relations in the Classic period and relations with the Aztec empire and the Mesoamerican world system in the Middle and Late Postclassic periods. In addition to locating, mapping, and describing sites and taking grab-bag artifact collections, we also made a series …

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

Within an evolving regulatory context, this paper identifies some of the emergent challenges and opportunities for social care education in Ireland. The paper discusses the potential offered by the Integrative Framework for Practice Teaching to address some of these contextual demands and examines the pedagogy underpinning this approach. A number of educators’ experiences of using this framework are provided, demonstrating how they innovatively integrated the framework with commonly used teaching and assessment strategies within social care education, such as mind-mapping, problem-based learning and the use of creative media. These experiences are offered to other educators who may wish to utilise …

Communities Of Play And Practice: Collaborating With Audiences And Coworkers In Performative Online Spaces, Paul Oppold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This study describes an ethnographic investigation of Communities of Play within Communities of Practice. As professional 'content creators', whose 'work' is 'play', are increasingly interacting with non-professional content consumers, whose 'play' is a kind of 'work', the barriers between 'work' and 'play' are increasingly dissolving. The purpose of this study was to examine the nature and frequency of the professionals' interactions with coworkers in an office and with the content consumers while working from home. Data were collected in the form of gameplay videos uploaded by the professional streamers from January of 2017 to March of 2018, downloaded by the …

Background and Purpose:

Asymmetry during walking may be explained by impaired interlimb coordination. We examined these associations: (1) propulsive symmetry with interlimb coordination during walking, (2) work symmetry with interlimb coordination during pedaling, and (3) work symmetry and interlimb coordination with clinical impairment.

Methods:

Nineteen individuals with chronic stroke and 15 controls performed bilateral, lower limb pedaling with a conventional device and a device with a bisected crank and upstroke assistance. Individuals with stroke walked on a split-belt treadmill. Measures of symmetry (%Propulsionwalk, %Workped) and interlimb phase coordination index (PCIwalk, PCIped) were …

Examining The Effect Of Perceived Responsibility On Online Bystander Intervention, Target Hardening, And Inaction, Leah C. Butler, Amanda Graham, Bonnie S. Fisher, Billy Henson, Bradford W. Reyns

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Failure to take responsibility for intervening has been identified as a primary barrier to bystander intervention. Building on these findings, we examine how perceptions of responsibility affect responses to witnessing victimization in the online realm—a topic that has received limited attention. Using a maximum-likelihood selection model, we analyze data from the Pew American Trends Panel (N = 3709) to estimate the effects of respondents’ perceptions of the role different groups should play in addressing online harassment on their likelihood to engage in intervention, target hardening, or inaction in response to witnessing online harassment, conditioned upon their likelihood of having …

The Empowerment Of Migrant Workers In A Precarious Situation, Fay Faraday Dec 2021

The Empowerment Of Migrant Workers In A Precarious Situation, Fay Faraday

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

The experience of transnational migrants working for low pay under exploitative conditions has been well-documented for many years. Yet, a sizeable catalogue of binding international instruments establishes a rights-based framework through which states commit to deliver substantive labour protections to migrant workers. By focusing on the operation of labour inspectorates in five countries – Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Qatar and South Africa – this paper undertakes a comparative analysis to explore what accounts for the persistent gap between the vision of the rights-based framework and the reality of rights violations that migrant workers experience. These countries were selected for comparison because …

Praising Papers, Clarifying Concerns: How Writers Respond To Praise In Writing Center Tutorials, Mike Haen Dec 2021

Praising Papers, Clarifying Concerns: How Writers Respond To Praise In Writing Center Tutorials, Mike Haen

The Writing Center Journal

In face-to-face writing center tutorials, tutor praise is an action that builds rapport and motivates writers (Mackiewicz & Thompson, 2013). Drawing on and extending prior interactional analyses of praise, this article examines writers’ responses to text-based praise across 10 tutorials, with a particular focus on interactional segments in which writers reformulate their previously mentioned concerns in response to tutor praise. Unlike more common responses that signal acceptance of the praise, such as appreciation, overt acceptance, and alignment, this responding action reflects some momentary misunderstanding between tutor and writer in the tutorial interaction. Despite this, these segments also show writers taking …

Building Networks Of Enterprise: Sustained Learning In The Writing Center, Steve Sherwood Dec 2021

Building Networks Of Enterprise: Sustained Learning In The Writing Center, Steve Sherwood

The Writing Center Journal

This essay examines the learning processes of writing center professionals through the lens of “networks of enterprise” (Wallace & Gruber, 1989), which reflects on the dynamic processes through which creative people, like writing center professionals (WCPs), bring together the diverse and complex tasks undertaken in their everyday work into a cohesive and satisfying career. While there is substantial turnover in the profession, some WCPs stay in writing center positions for decades. Drawing on information gathered through surveys and interviews with ten long-term WCPs (with an average of 28 years of experience), as well as reflecting on his own career, the …

The Measuring Of Assortativeness In Marriage, Pierre-André Chiappori, Monica Costa-Dias, Costas Meghir Dec 2021

The Measuring Of Assortativeness In Marriage, Pierre-André Chiappori, Monica Costa-Dias, Costas Meghir

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Measuring the extent to which assortative matching
differs between two economies is challenging when the marginal distributions of the characteristic along which sorting takes place (e.g. education) also changes for either or both sexes. Drawing from the statistics literature we define simple conditions that any index has to satisfy to provide a measure of change in sorting that is not distorted by changes in the marginal distributions of the characteristic. While our characterisation of indices of assortativeness is not complete, and hence cannot exclude the possibility of multiple indices providing contradictory results, in an empirical application to US data we …

Republicans Are More Optimistic About Economic Mobility, But No Less Accurate, Matt Grossmann, Kayla Hamann, Jennifer Lee, Gabrielle Levy, Brendan Nyhan, Victor Wu Dec 2021

Republicans Are More Optimistic About Economic Mobility, But No Less Accurate, Matt Grossmann, Kayla Hamann, Jennifer Lee, Gabrielle Levy, Brendan Nyhan, Victor Wu

Dartmouth Scholarship

Do Americans overestimate economic mobility? Using representative surveys of the public and local government officials, we assess claims of widespread misperceptions about economic mobility by measuring the accuracy of participants’ perceptions of both relative and absolute mobility. Republican members of the public and government officials are more optimistic than are Democrats about poor children’s chances of reaching the highest income quintile (relative mobility) and earning more than their parents (absolute mobility). Democrats also rate race and family wealth as more important to children’s chances than do Republicans. However, partisan tendencies to overestimate or underestimate mobility are roughly symmetric despite differences …

Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports (Pbis): Does Stronger Implementation Relate To More Equitable Student Outcomes In School Discipline?, Stephenie C. Bruce

Dissertations

For this study, I explored the degree of implementation of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework and the existence of disproportionality of formal school disciplinary responses to behavioral occurrences by race/ethnicity, sex, special education status (SPED), and socioeconomic status (SES) of students. Further, I investigated the relationship between a school’s degree of implementation of PBIS and the existence of disproportionality by race/ethnicity, sex, SPED, and SES, and investigated the differences in the existence of disproportionality in schools that fully implemented PBIS and schools that did not fully implement PBIS.

Literature exists on PBIS implementation and, separately, on the …

The Moderating Role Of Social Exchange In The Relationship Between Work-Family Backlash And Injustice, Joel Hernandez Dec 2021

The Moderating Role Of Social Exchange In The Relationship Between Work-Family Backlash And Injustice, Joel Hernandez

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In consideration of an employee’s wellbeing, both the government and organizations are providing additional work-family benefits to employees to reduce work-family conflicts. Though there are good intentions with these policies, it is important to investigate how employees react to these policies and the utilization of those benefits. One reaction of interest is work-family backlash (WFB), which includes negative emotions, attitudes, and behaviors made by both individuals and groups directed towards multiple forms of work-life benefits practices and policies (Perrigino et al., 2018; Young, 1999). In this paper I draw from the multifoci approach of organizational justice (Lavelle et al., 2007) …

Social Identities At Work : How Do Multiple Social Identities Influence Organizational Attraction?, Aileen Dowden Dec 2021

Social Identities At Work : How Do Multiple Social Identities Influence Organizational Attraction?, Aileen Dowden

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Social Identity Theory posits that people hold a social identity from which they derive meaning to groups and organizations they join. That individuals use group affiliation to serve social identity concerns is a hallmark of social identity theory. In these studies, two social identity concerns were tested, social adjustment and value expression, to examine if people could hold both or neither concerns simultaneously (study 1) and how they influenced attraction to organizations (study 2). For study 1, archival data was analyzed using latent class analysis to extract groups of respondents for different levels of social identity concerns. Five classes were …
