Integrating Dance And Language Education: A Pedagogical Epiphany, Nan Zhang, Jane Southcott, Maria Gindidis

The Qualitative Report

Dance fulfils several educational purposes, particularly in the context of second language teaching and learning. Nevertheless, challenges to implementing dance as an approach to teach and learn a second language do exist. For teachers, it is essential to develop varied pedagogical approaches to suit different student cohorts. But it is not reasonable to expect that every language teacher is a born expert and connoisseur of dance or every dance teacher a born expert and connoisseur of the target language. Moreover, we have not seen studies focus on the development of the pedagogy of using dance as an approach for teaching …

Food Insecurity, Climate Change And Role Of Physicians, Joe Bhagratie, Bashyam Iyengar

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Food insecurity is a growing concern both locally and globally. Food insecurity has a number of causative factors. The food delivery system is laden with many inequities and fragilities. We will outline a framework of the food delivery system and the areas where inequities exist.

Climate change is an equally expansive topic. Changes to our climate have a myriad of impacts on our food delivery systems and in turn can exacerbate our already tenuous delivery system. Continued impacts on our environment creates even more imbalance and can subsequently exacerbate food inequities further.

The role climate change has is significant when …

This article comprehensively details the culture clash that took place between Native Americans, the North Group Science Panel, and the Science Advisory Team (SAT) involved in the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). In 1999, the California Legislature passed the Marine Life Protection Act to create a statewide, science-driven network of marine reserves along the 1,100 miles of the California coast. The MLPA was meant to protect marine areas from overharvesting, and an initiative was formed to create a state marine reserve system advised by regional science panels. The science panel, a public body, decided that Native Americans science was not …

Applying Liberation Psychology Tenets To The Career Trajectory Of The First Chicano Psychologist, Sarah E. Sanders, Alejandra Gonzalez Lopez

Psychology from the Margins

Castañeda experienced a prolific career in teaching and research that began by investigating universal elements in children’s learning and anxiety and ultimately transformed into an emphasis on multiculturalism, cultural strengths, advocacy, and social justice. A combination of data was used to inform the current project, including interviews from Castañeda’s former graduate students, published obituaries and memorial tributes, …

An Inquiry Into The Life And Accomplishments Of Dr. Robert L. Williams, Javier Martin-Fernandez, Kiarra King, Jusiah Prowell, Nathan Bitecofer

Psychology from the Margins

Like other fields, the field of psychology can trace its roots back to the pioneering efforts of early scientists, scholars, and professionals. The current commentary fills a gap in psychology's history by providing an inside look into the accomplishments of Dr. Williams. Particular attention is paid to four notable accomplishments: the founding of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi), the development of the Black Intelligence Test of Cultural Homogeneity (BITCH-100), the coining of the term Ebonics, and the development of the concept of racial scripting. This is important because our present is a reflection of our past. The more that …

Psychology from the Margins

This paper presents a review of the historical context and the prominent debates about rural education that occurred from 1900-1940 and connects current trends in rural education to this history. Outmigration of rural youth continues to be a concern for rural communities, and the continued and important role of modern education in this phenomenon is discussed. Additionally, the current paper offers a review of other historic concerns regarding rural education …

New Census Reflects Growing U.S. Population Diversity, With Children In The Forefront, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that the U.S. population grew by a modest 7.4 percent during the past decade to 331.4 million in April 2020. Yet, there was significant variation in the rate and direction of population change among the numerous racial and Hispanic origin groups that together represent the U.S. population. The net result was a significant increase in racial diversity over the course of the decade, both in the population as a whole, and children in particular. Diversity was geographically widespread and increased in every region of the country.

The nation’s growing racial-ethnic diversity increases the …

Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is an approach commonly used to recruit nonprobability samples of rare and hard-to-find populations. The purpose of this study was to explore the utility of phone- and web-based RDS methodology to sample sexual minority women (SMW) for participation in a telephone survey. Key features included (i) utilizing a national probability survey sample to select seeds; (ii) web-based recruitment with emailed coupons; and (iii) virtual processes for orienting, screening, and scheduling potential participants for computer-assisted telephone interviews. Rather than resulting in a large diverse sample of SMW, only a small group of randomly selected women completed the survey …

A Comprehensive Antiracist Framework For Slhs Education: A Sample Curriculum Related To Arab American Populations, Reem Khamis-Dakwar

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students in higher education programs in Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences (SLHS) experience structural racism, entering a majority white profession, while confronting social inequalities in their personal and professional communities. A vision of an antiracist decolonized antiracist curriculum enhances the integration of BIPOC students in academic programs in the field, while also facilitating the preparation of non-BIPOC students to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community of individuals with communication disorders. Such a curriculum must be comprehensively designed to include pedagogy, community-based, and research based educational activities, and to adequately prepare …

Teaching Culturally Responsive Evidence-Based Practice In Speech Language Pathology, Ramonda Horton, Maria L. Munoz Oct 2021

Teaching Culturally Responsive Evidence-Based Practice In Speech Language Pathology, Ramonda Horton, Maria L. Munoz

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Faculty teaching students in communication sciences and disorders to engage in evidence-based practice (EBP) must consciously work to overcome the lack of considerations for cultural and linguistic differences. Much of the literature on evidence-based treatment approaches fails to address contextual aspects of cultural-linguistic diversity or actively excludes non-white speakers of languages and dialects that are not White Mainstream American English from studies and analyses to maintain homogeneity. Cultural adaptation frameworks developed in the fields of education and psychology can provide guidance for integrating culturally responsive frameworks, tools, and strategies with EBP pedagogy. This paper provides the reader with an overview …
