The Relationship Between Gesture And Sound: A Pilot Study Of Choral Conducting Behaviour In Two Related Settings, Peter Litman Oct 2021

The Relationship Between Gesture And Sound: A Pilot Study Of Choral Conducting Behaviour In Two Related Settings, Peter Litman

Visions of Research in Music Education

A short pilot study was designed to examine whether choral conducting in a rehearsal context, and the gestures (those gestures determined by the teacher–conductor as being effective) used in teaching an undergraduate conducting class are related. This idea that these contexts are related is widely acknowledged and supported within both choral conducting literature, and more general educational literature (Apfelstadt, 1997; Decker & Kirk, 1992; Durrant, 2003; Green, 1981; Roe, 1983; Thomas, 1979; Wis, 2002) but as yet, has not been subject to systematic research. To this end, a pilot observation took place in October 2005 at the Musikhochschule, in Stuttgart, …

Critical Pedagogy For Music Education: A Best Practice To Prepare Future Music Educators, Frank Abrahams Oct 2021

Critical Pedagogy For Music Education: A Best Practice To Prepare Future Music Educators, Frank Abrahams

Visions of Research in Music Education

This paper describes a best teaching practice called Critical Pedagogy for Music Education as it influences the preparation of future music educators. In a college laboratory school, preservice undergraduate music education majors collaborate with their professor to create music lessons they will teach to sixth-grade students in general music classes that meet once a week for one semester. Grounded in the social theories of Freire, McLaren, Giroux, and Habermas, the music lessons pose and solve problems that engage children in critical thinking, critical action, and critical feeling. The lessons inspire a dialogue that breaks down power structures and barriers that …

Returning Music Education To The Mainstream: Reconnecting With The Community, Patrick M. Jones

Visions of Research in Music Education

School music programs should be fostering both lifewide and lifelong musicing by enabling students to be involved in performing and enjoying a wide range of musical offerings within their communities throughout their lives. They should focus on connecting students with the musical lives of their communities, teaching them to perform, compose and arrange a variety of musical styles available throughout their community, as well as chamber music they can perform at home and with friends. This would move school music from the margins to the mainstream of the musical lives of their communities. The researcher investigated the musical offerings in …

Critical Theory As A Foundation For Critical Thinking In Music Education, Thomas A. Regelski Oct 2021

Critical Theory As A Foundation For Critical Thinking In Music Education, Thomas A. Regelski

Visions of Research in Music Education

Critical theory is the product of a group of German social theorists, first associated with the Institute for Social Research begun in Frankfurt Germany in 1923, and who later moved to and were influential in the US. While they were often critical of each other, their early common agenda was the critique of the unresolved conflict within the Enlightenment of rationalism and empiricism. The former was misunderstood as involving an impersonal faculty of reason that supposedly arrived at universal truth, while the positivism of the later led to wide acceptance of (and even reverence for) the mistaken idea of value …

Music Education As Transformative Practice: Creating New Frameworks For Learning Music Through A Freirian Perspective, Patrick Schmidt Oct 2021

Music Education As Transformative Practice: Creating New Frameworks For Learning Music Through A Freirian Perspective, Patrick Schmidt

Visions of Research in Music Education

The educational perspectives presented by Paulo Freire have been thoroughly analyzed and linked to the general education of children in urban America. Additional studies have focused on Freire’s pedagogy in higher education. Nevertheless, the number of studies that have examined music education and the pedagogy of music teaching and learning as a kind of pedagogy of emancipation are far more restricted, have become available only recently and are still not widely dispersed or read. In this article, Freirian concepts serve to develop frameworks that define the philosophy of a Critical Pedagogy for Music Education. This new conception borrows from Freire’s …

Obesity, Age, And African American Males: The Impact Of Food Security On Cardiovascular Health Outcomes, Tangela G. Towns, Richard G. Moye, Antonius D. Skipper, Daniel J. Rose

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Although prevalence of food insecurity has declined over the last 5 years, food insecurity for African Americans and single individuals is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to examine the male-specific associations between food insecurity and cardiovascular-related health outcomes. We examine the relationship between single, African American male adults and food security, kidney disease risk, diabetes, and related comorbidities using the NHANES dataset (2013-2014). We build multivariate logistic regression models to estimate the association between gender, race, and food insecurity using stratified data from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

An Initiative To Improve Cultural Competence Among Gyn/Ob Providers, Lynn R. Mcdonald, Joshua L. Schwarz, Stephen J. Martin, Susan Brown Will, Shari M. Lawson, Tanesha Stokes, Shannon C. Riley, Katie Reynolds, Betty Chou

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Healthcare cultural competence is defined as a process of delivering care by meeting the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of diverse populations, and should be optimized at all organizational levels to reduce racial disparities and poor patient outcomes. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recognizes the importance of cultural competence and states that research should be conducted to identify and combat barriers that impede equitable care. In this prospective, pre- and post-intervention study design, we used the Healthcare Provider Cultural Competence Instrument (HPCCI) to measure five dimensions of cultural competence within the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in …

Ethnic Disparities In Mental Health Among Asian Americans: Evidence From A National Sample, Fang Gong, Jun Xu Oct 2021

Ethnic Disparities In Mental Health Among Asian Americans: Evidence From A National Sample, Fang Gong, Jun Xu

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing racial group in the United States, yet their health profiles are still under-explored. In particular, the existing research on Asian American mental health has not devoted adequate attention to the enormous ethnic heterogeneity of the group. Grounded upon theoretical frameworks of the tri-racial system and a contextual approach, we examined ethnic disparities in Asian American mental health using data from the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS). We focused on ethnic membership, immigration-related factors, socioeconomic status, and social support as the main correlates of multiple outcomes, including self-rated mental health, psychological distress, and …

"We Had To Rely On Each Other": Voices Of Latinx Foster Youth With Experiences In Care With Siblings, Isabella B. Ginsberg Oct 2021

"We Had To Rely On Each Other": Voices Of Latinx Foster Youth With Experiences In Care With Siblings, Isabella B. Ginsberg

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Relationships between members of sibling groups have been found to impact well-being for children who enter foster care (Herrick & Piccus, 2005). Being placed in stranger foster care is often challenging and can be traumatic with children reporting confusion, worry, and loss of identity and sense of belonging (Herrick & Piccus, 2005, Unrau et al, 2008). While there is some research that explores the experiences of siblings groups in foster care and others separately that examines Latinx children in foster care, there is very little information that looks into the potentially unique experiences of Latinx individuals who were in care …

The Sustainability Institute Publications

Sustainable food systems education (SFSE) is rapidly advancing to meet the need for developing future professionals who are capable of effective decision-making regarding agriculture, food, nutrition, consumption, and waste in a complex world. Equity, particularly racial equity and its intersectional links with other inequities, should play a central role in efforts to advance SFSE given the harmful social and environmental externalities of food systems and ongoing oppression and systemic inequities such as lack of food access faced by racialized and/or marginalized populations. However, few institutional and intra-disciplinary resources exist on how to engage students in discussion about equity and related …

Impacts Of State 4-H Council Service: A Phenomenological Study, Bradd L. Anderson Oct 2021

Impacts Of State 4-H Council Service: A Phenomenological Study, Bradd L. Anderson

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

This qualitative study explored the experience of youth serving on the state 4-H council of Missouri, which provides opportunities to serve as ambassadors of the 4-H organization and influence the experiences of younger members. While many 4-H programs have a statewide youth council, there is little research regarding these groups or the impacts of state 4-H council service. This study employed a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to explore the impacts of State 4-H Council service among alumni, within a framework of positive youth development theory. Council service was found to have provided members experience in working with diverse others, created opportunities …

Janice Forsyth, Reclaiming Tom Long Boat: Indigenous Self-Determination In Canadian Sport. With A Foreword By Willie Littlechild., Gwooyim Gyat Hawaaw

Dalhousie Law Journal

Established in 1951, the Tom Longboat Awards seek to “recognize Aboriginal athletes for their outstanding contributions to sport in Canada.” In her meticulous work of cultural history, the Cree kinesiologist Janice Forsyth places this official discourse in settler-colonial context. “The history of sport and physical activity in Canada,” she clarifies for sports scholars and administrators, “is not a history of empowerment or inclusion, or even of opportunity, accommodation, or amalgamation. Rather, it is a history of containment, control, and elimination.” Forsyth’s incisive analysis consequently goes well beyond the fields of sociology and sport history. On my reading, her work makes …

Evaluating The Feasibility Of A Future Care Planning Program With Older Adults, Jeong Eun Lee, Dahee Kim, Eva Kahana, Boaz Kahana Oct 2021

Evaluating The Feasibility Of A Future Care Planning Program With Older Adults, Jeong Eun Lee, Dahee Kim, Eva Kahana, Boaz Kahana

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Despite potential health care needs, many older adults do not make concrete plans about future care in late life. Prior community programs have not addressed this need via Cooperative Extension systems. To address these gaps, we developed and evaluated the pilot study program, Future Care Planning, designed to help older adults plan for their own personal, health, and environmental care. The Plan Ahead program (Plan Ahead) consists of two sessions implemented over two weeks to teach older adults to plan for their future care across multiple domains, including health communication, aging in place, and end-of-life discussion. Latino Volunteerism In The 4-H Youth Development Program, Steven M. Worker, Maria G. Fábregas Janeiro, Lynn Schmitt-Mcquitty Oct 2021

Latino Volunteerism In The 4-H Youth Development Program, Steven M. Worker, Maria G. Fábregas Janeiro, Lynn Schmitt-Mcquitty

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Nationally, the 4-H Youth Development Program utilizes more than 350,000 adult volunteers annually, and 25% of the nation’s K-12 students identify as Hispanic or Latino; however, there is a dearth of published literature on Latino volunteerism in the 4-H Youth Development Program. Developmental relationships, a critical component of realizing youth development outcomes, are enhanced when adults and young people share cultural values and identity markers. The Cooperative Extension System has an obligation to reach a diverse audience and ensure program participation reflects the demographics of the communities in which youth live. We review the literature on Latino volunteerism in 4-H, …

A Five-Step Stakeholder Communication Plan For More Effective Natural Resource Management, Hannah O. Brown, Susan K. Jacobson, Marcy Cockrell, Jessica Sutt, Katherine Allen, Amy Copeland Oct 2021

A Five-Step Stakeholder Communication Plan For More Effective Natural Resource Management, Hannah O. Brown, Susan K. Jacobson, Marcy Cockrell, Jessica Sutt, Katherine Allen, Amy Copeland

Journal of Extension

Effectively communicating with diverse groups involved in environmental management is critical to facilitating successful projects. This five-step communication plan is designed to enable resource managers and extension professionals to successfully engage their stakeholders. This plan, which uses oyster reef management as an example, was informed by two primary sources: an expert meeting with stakeholder leaders and coastal residents and a review of relevant literature. By incorporating stakeholder input throughout the planning and implementation of natural resource management projects, new and innovative ideas emerge, and relationships between stakeholders, managers, and extension agents are strengthened.

Adverse Childhood Experiences Distinguish Violent Juvenile Sexual Offenders’ Victim Typologies, Michael T. Baglivio, Kevin T. Wolff Oct 2021

Adverse Childhood Experiences Distinguish Violent Juvenile Sexual Offenders’ Victim Typologies, Michael T. Baglivio, Kevin T. Wolff

Publications and Research

Juvenile perpetrators account for over 25% of all sexual offenses, and over one-third of such offenses are against victims under the age of 18. Given empirical connections between adverse childhood experience (ACE) exposure and perpetration of violence, we create victim typologies based on the juveniles’ relationship to their victims among 5539 justice-involved adolescents who have committed violent against-person sexual felonies. Multinomial logistic regression is used to assess which covariates, including individual ACE exposures and cumulative traumatic exposures, are associated with victim typologies. This approach allows for better targeting of violence prevention efforts, as a more nuanced understanding of the increased …

Developmental Evaluation For Extension Programs, Joseph L. Donaldson, Karen Franck Oct 2021

Developmental Evaluation For Extension Programs, Joseph L. Donaldson, Karen Franck

Journal of Extension

Logic models have garnered acclaim for their usefulness and disdain for the time required to create good ones. We argue that the orderly, analytical nature of logic models is opposed to many Extension programs, and we explain developmental evaluation, an approach that highlights ongoing development, adaptations, and rapid response. We use our recently completed evaluation of the 4-H Science: Building a 4-H Career Pathway Initiative to demonstrate developmental evaluation’s key principles. Recommendations for Extension include the need to embrace developmental evaluation for program planning and evaluation and for Extension evaluators to conduct case studies using developmental evaluation and other approaches.

Improving Youth Financial Literacy: A Profile Of Middle School Camp Attendees, Jamie Lynn Byram, John Grable, Kenneth J. White, Michael Thomas, Kimberly Watkins

Journal of Extension

The purpose of this paper is to present a profile of middle-school-age youth who participated in a week-long experiential residential camp focused on helping campers learn about and interact with money, personal finance topics, and mainstream financial service providers. Based on pre- and post-test data, it was determined an experiential real-world camp experience can increase the financial confidence and goal-setting abilities of young people.
