BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Introduction: The nursing profession has advanced immensely from the onset. Remarkable changes in medical technology facilitated patients’ survival and treatments which were unimaginable during the period of Florence Nightingale. Although, technology empowered the nurses to provide quality care to patients, some of these technologies can break the bond of therapeutic nurse - patient relationship and make it mechanical, instead. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate nurses caring behavior during blood pressure monitoring with manual and electronic devices. Objective: Compare the nurses caring behavior while monitoring blood pressure by electronic and manual devices. Methods: a descriptive comparative design …

One Or The Other: Parent Religiosity Or Private School Choice May Reduce Crime And Paternity Disputes In Milwaukee, Marilyn Anderson Rhames, Patrick J. Wolf
School Choice Demonstration Project
Religious faith is one of the strongest motivators known to man. For millennia, human beings have turned to a higher power to help them cope with the challenges of life and define their values and behaviors. Millions of people have died for their faith. Yet, when it comes to public education reform and research, the influence of religion is grossly underexplored. This study takes some initial steps to change that. We analyze parent survey responses from the 2008 Milwaukee Parent Choice Program (MPCP) Longitudinal Education Growth Study Baseline Report. Our analysis compares MPCP students who were matched to students from …

Falk College Research Center
Purpose: Children who grow up outside the care of their biological parents – e.g., those in adoptive, foster, or kinship (AFK) care – experience poorer educational outcomes than their peers. However, the protective factors that could mitigate any risks of AFK care have received less attention. One understudied area is the participation of AFK youth in organized activities (e.g., extracurricular or afterschool programs).
Method: Drawing on nationally representative data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (n=16,197), this study used multilevel modeling to (1) examine the association of AFK care status with organized activity participation and …

Challenges In Language Planning And Policies In The Western Balkans, Agim Poshka
UBT International Conference
The language policies in the Western world are closely related to administrative planning procedures which allow pragmatic application of expected procedures and responsibilities. Unfortunately, this is not the case in the Western Balkans. Based on the Socio-Historic practices, the language planning and policies are often a political and human rights issue. The right to speak, get educated and get serviced by the public servants in your own ethnic language was an issue that was prolonged in the region. The status of Albanian language in Kosovo drastically improved after the independence and in Macedonia this is an ongoing process that requires …

Recent legislation in multiple states has called for studies on the scope of missing Native American persons. Here we report on one such study from Nebraska by first describing the practical and methodological issues for researchers to consider when examining data on missing Native persons. Then, using data from four point-in-time-counts in 2020, rates of Native American missing persons as well as case contexts over the study period are reported. Findings show that Native Americans are disproportionately represented among Nebraska's missing persons, that reports often involve minor boys, and that cases are dynamic and most are resolved quickly. Relatedly, most …

Racial Captialism And Race Massacres: Tulsa's Black Wall Street And Elaine's Sharecroppers, André Douglas Pond Cummings, Kalvin Graham
Law Faculty Scholarship
United States history is marked and checkered with grievous race massacres dating back to the end of slavery. These race “riots,” as they are benignly referred to in some quarters, occurred infamously in Tulsa, Elaine, Rosewood, Chicago, Detroit, and so many other lesser remembered cities. The starkest period of race massacres in the United States, including each of those just mentioned, occurred in the early 1900s, between 1919 and 1923 when Black Americans, newly empowered by service in a world war and having gained available land grants in territories where indigenous peoples were forced to abandon, began finding economic and …

Demographic Factors As Determinants Of Adolescents’ Help-Seeking Intention For Sexual Exploitation In Tanzania, Budeba Petro Mlyakado, Jessica Chi-Mei Li
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study examines the influence of adolescents’ gender, age, locality, and history of sexual victimisation on adolescents’ help-seeking intention for sexual exploitation. It compares how these demographic variables influence adolescents’ intention to seek help from formal sources (teachers, police, doctors/nurses, counsellors/social workers, local government leaders, and religious leaders); informal sources (parents, i.e., father and mother), guardians (uncles, aunts and grandparents); siblings (brothers, sisters or cousins), and friends. In this study, a cross-sectional survey is used to examine responses from a stratified random sample of 1,116 adolescents aged 13-17 years (M = 15.66; SD = 1.09), recruited from rural and urban …

Gender Inequalities In Pedagogical Classroom Practice: What Influence Do Teachers Make?, Rehema J. Mwakabenga,, Sotco Claudius Komba
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Most Sub-Saharan African countries have made great efforts towards promoting gender equality in gaining access to, and completing, education cycles. Regardless of such efforts, less attention has been paid to gender-biased classroom practices that affect students’ effective learning. This disparity calls for nuanced understanding of teachers’ classroom practices that perpetuate gender inequality with a view of devising mechanisms for improvement. This paper specifically analyses patterns of gender inequalities caused by teachers in the classroom through their knowledge, beliefs and behaviours. Data were obtained from a review of 55 empirical and theoretical publications on gender in education, of which 26 articles …

The teaching process is one of the most complex and sensitive processes in terms of education. It includes many areas through which this process can function. To create a better and more efficient learning process, relations must first be formed between the two key subjects of the process, the teacher and the student. A healthy relationship between these subjects is the main step in creating an ideal learning process. It provides a safe environment and confidence work and perform without pressure. When the classroom in which teaching takes place is a safe and supportive environment, students are more motivated and …

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is an information systems theory that models how users come to accept and use a technology. The actual system use is the end-point where people use the technology. Behavioural intention is a factor that leads people to use the technology. Virtual Reference Service (VRS) has been found to be successful and effective in providing remote assistance to the library patrons online. VRS is the extension of the age-old reference service being offered by the libraries worldwide. This extension is brought through technology and techniques augmented and enriched by implementation ICTs including software and hardware. Present …

“Swooping In To Save The Day?”: Investigating The Effects On Musical Identity Of A Choral Collaboration Between Amateur And Professional Singers, Hermione Ruck Keene
“Swooping In To Save The Day?”: Investigating The Effects On Musical Identity Of A Choral Collaboration Between Amateur And Professional Singers, Hermione Ruck Keene
Visions of Research in Music Education
Choral singing by amateur musicians forms a significant part of the Western Art Music tradition in the United Kingdom. Professional singers conventionally inhabit a different performance sphere to their amateur counterparts, with substantially different motivations for making music. There is a hierarchical relationship between amateur and professional musicians based on perceived differences in musical ability, training, and competence. If they are called upon to rehearse and perform side-by-side, the effects on the musical identity of the amateurs in particular may be disruptive. I conducted a case study of a choir established to combine amateur and professional singers and promote a …

Performing The “Exotic?”: Constructing An Ethical World Music Ensemble, Juliet Hess
Visions of Research in Music Education
The Sankofa Drum and Dance Ensemble was a Ghanaian music ensemble that focused on Ewe music. I founded this ensemble in the elementary school where I taught in the Toronto area. From the time of its founding, one of the overarching goals I had for the group was a disruption of images and stereotypes that the students held of Africa in general, and more specifically, of Ghana. How did the students perceive Africa? Did the ensemble change their perceptions at all? How did my own positionality, as a white, Western woman enter the picture? How did students’ ensemble participation affect …
