However, one thing has never changed – Chinese Americans are perpetual foreigners. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the representations of Chinese Americans in American popular culture (2010-2020) by comparing these images in Americans’ minds with Chinese American …

The Heritagescape Of The Egyptian Natural Lakes, Magdi Ahmed Ragheb Koutkat

Student Theses and Dissertations

It is well-established that the ancient Egyptian civilization is water-based and derives its core cultural heritage assets from the country’s natural heritage constructs. Despites the scholarly studies on the Egyptian Natural Lakes (herein referred to as ENLs), from both natural and cultural perspectives, 1) these studies lack integration between the natural and cultural components of the ENLs, 2) the environmental studies do not provide continuous evolution of the ENLs, and 3) the cultural studies hardly touch on the role of the ENLs in the Egyptian civilization, which has not been thoroughly understood. This study investigates how far the ENLs were …

The Limitations Of Being A Good Antiracist, Pauli Badenhorst, Jenna Min Shim Nov 2021

The Limitations Of Being A Good Antiracist, Pauli Badenhorst, Jenna Min Shim

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

In this paper, we take up our shared antiracist identity aspirations as teacher educators and investigate how complex racialized emotions generated in interracial encounters trouble the idealized object of a good antiracist identity. Utilizing redirected antiracist psychoanalytic method to parse stories created through collective memory work, persistent emotional defenses that diminish an ability to dismantle oppressive racist structures, both internal and external, are uncovered and theorized. Later, contrary to some transmissive curricular and pedagogical texts and discourses that prioritize resolve, the contours of a relational antiracist curriculum and pedagogy that welcomes and integrates ambivalent, ambiguous emotional dilemmas present and inevitable …

"Theology" In The Public University, Sarah T. White

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have suggested the transformative potential of “theological” inquiry anddiscourse in religious studies, particularly, in furthering religious literacy and peace building initiatives through greater understanding of “other”. Yet, “theology” is a relatively new academic approach to peace building and conflict studies and is still marginalized to a large degree in secular universities. Vigorous inquiry into the intrinsic value and potential role of “theological” inquiry and discourse in secular academics, as well as possible pedagogical strategies, are worthwhile and necessary towards achieving the wider aims of the secular university. To those ends, this paper presents a broad survey of the …

Washington Monthly Interviews Vinay Harpalani: Asian Americans And The Pursuit Of Unhappiness, Vinay Harpalani, Reginald C. Oh Nov 2021

Washington Monthly Interviews Vinay Harpalani: Asian Americans And The Pursuit Of Unhappiness, Vinay Harpalani, Reginald C. Oh

Faculty Scholarship

EXCERPT:

There are, however, several problems with depicting Asian Americans as victims of affirmative action. First, it is necessary to distinguish between affirmative action and negative action. Affirmative action refers to admissions policies that use the race of an underrepresented racial group as a “plus factor” in admissions. According to the law professor Vinay Harpalani, negative action “refers to policies or practices which disadvantage Asian Americans” in comparison to whites. If schools like Harvard covertly impose a higher standard for Asian Americans than for whites, the problem is negative action, not affirmative action. And if Harvard’s admissions decisions are …

Can We Sustain Sustainability? A Critical Synthesis Of Pertinent Literature, Jay L. Brand, Sally J. Augustin

Faculty Publications

Architects and designers, along with their corporate clients, generally embrace the importance of environmental stewardship, saving the earth’s ecosystem, and sustainable design. However, research is needed to link sustainable design with relevant human behavior (e.g., in corporate offices and educational settings) to ensure its enduring legacy. Regarding changing people’s behavior, the majority of human experience results from unconscious processes, i.e., brain–environment interactions not available to awareness; thus, in general, people cannot articulate the nature of these associations. Using theoretical roots stemming from William James and running through ecological psychology (e.g., James J. Gibson to Roger Barker), Harry Heft has argued …

Aesthetic Judging And The Constitution (Or, Why Supreme Court Justices Are Less Like Umpires And More Like Figure-Skating Judges), Chad M. Oldfather Nov 2021

Aesthetic Judging And The Constitution (Or, Why Supreme Court Justices Are Less Like Umpires And More Like Figure-Skating Judges), Chad M. Oldfather

Florida Law Review

This Article extends the project of exploring the metaphor to the specific context of constitutional adjudication and change. It works from the understanding that both sports and constitutional law can be understood as “practices” in the philosophical sense, as “activities that are constituted by the convergent or overlapping understandings, expectations, and intentions of multiple participants.” The analysis is thus fundamentally comparative in nature. Conceiving of the operation of constitutional law in these terms, like any comparative analysis, helps to uncover and highlight certain of its features, including the ways in which its content is susceptible to change, only some of …
