Vulnerable Learners In The Age Of Covid-19: A Scoping Review, Catherine F. Drane, Lynette Vernon, Sarah O’Shea
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020, The Author(s). This scoping review provides an overview of COVID-19 approaches to managing unanticipated school closures and available literature related to young people learning outside-of-school. A range of material has been drawn upon to highlight educational issues of this learning context, including psychosocial and emotional repercussions. Globally, while some countries opted for a mass school shut-down, many schools remained open for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This partial closure not only enabled learning in smaller targeted groups but also offered a safe sanctuary for those who needed a regulated and secure environment. In Australia, if full school closures were …

Postbellum Electoral Politics In California And The Genesis Of The Chinese Exclusion Act Of 1882, Vincent Geloso, Linan Peng
Postbellum Electoral Politics In California And The Genesis Of The Chinese Exclusion Act Of 1882, Vincent Geloso, Linan Peng
School of Business and Leadership Working Papers
After the Civil War, the Democratic party carried an important electoral penalty from being associated with the war. To deal with this penalty, the party took increasingly anti-immigration positions to compete with Republicans. This led some Republican strongholds such as California to become competitive and also forced Republicans to embrace stricter immigration proposals. In this paper, we argue that adopting anti-immigration and raising awareness against immigration made California increasingly competitive in electoral terms. This electoral competitiveness can serve to explain the genesis of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.

Perspectives Of Interactions With Healthcare Providers Among Patients Who Are Blind, Nazanin M. Heydarian, Allyson S. Hughes, Osvaldo F. Morera, Ashley S. Bangert, Angela H. Frederick
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
Healthcare providers’ (HCPs) stereotypes about the incompetence of blind and low-vision patients may lead them to patronize blind patients, over-focus on impairments, and neglect the presenting problem. The content of perceived HCP stereotypes about blind patients in the clinical setting was examined from the patient perspective with seven focus groups, including a total of 42 individual participants. Most participants reported an interaction when their HCPs treated them as if they were incompetent, and discussed how perceived evaluations of their warmth and competence impacted whether their HCPs trusted and respected them. Participants also discussed their evaluations of their HCPs’ warmth and …
A Laboratory Of Common Interest: Contesting The Economisation Of Space In Limerick City Through The Practice Of Aesthetic Work, Fiona Woods
Doctoral
This arts practice-based research [APBR] addresses a political and ethical problem, namely how a creative practice can operate contrary to the destructive, predatory forces of extractive capitalism. The research took the systemic, socio-spatial violence of enclosure and economisation as a starting point, anchored in the concrete conditions of Limerick city, to test the critical, political possibilities of collaborative, cultural work. From an examination of the ways in which lived space is subsumed under the abstractive logic of ‘the Economy’, two processes of abstraction and enclosure are isolated and examined: i) a hollowing out of publicness, captured by the lexigraph public …

Integrative Sonic Urbanism: Artist-Led Strategies For Urban Sound Design In The Contemporary City, Sven Anderson
Doctoral
This doctoral research advances the fields of urban sound design and acoustic planning, presenting new ways of exploring the interrelationship between individual and collective sonic experience, the dynamic potential of the urban sound environment and the complex evolution of the contemporary cityscape. It links urban sound art practices with larger urban design processes, revealing how sound contributes to the production of urban space. The research progresses by crafting a dynamic, integrative methodology that activates contrasting sonic perspectives to critically reassess the role of sound in the public realm. As it discloses this methodology, the research navigates the tension between new …
From Full Irish To Freespace: Irish Architecture In The Twenty-First Century, Brian Ward
From Full Irish To Freespace: Irish Architecture In The Twenty-First Century, Brian Ward
Books/Book chapters
This chapter examines Irish architecture during the Celtic Tiger boom years, the crash, and the eventual economic recovery. Using representations of Irish architecture such as the book, Full Irish, and the Architecture Biennale, FREESPACE, it concentrates on the architectural practices (such as Grafton Architects and O’Donnell + Tuomey) that were the focus of international interest during this period but places their work in the midst of the country’s broader spatial production. Using imagery of ghost estates, it also examines the emergence of a distinct post-Celtic Tiger mode of architecture evident in projects such as Commonage.
A New Epoch For Community Renewable Energy Co-Operatives In Ireland? An Exploration Of The Factors Influencing Their Development, Gerard Doyle
Articles
The paper outlines the capacities required for community groups to successfully establish and maintain renewable energy co-operatives in Ireland. The paper finds that community groups that successfully establish renewable energy co-operatives must possess high levels of resilience, have access to technical expertise, and have appropriate finance. It also highlights how it is crucial that at least one member of each renewable energy co-operative engages with state agencies and the community. Pringle’s (2015) theoretical framework applied in this paper focuses on the capacities required for the successful implementation of community renewable energy projects (which include community renewable energy co-operatives) in rural …

“You Must Have Your Webcam On For The Entire Duration Of The Examination”: The Trade-Off Between The Integrity Of On-Line Assessments And The Privacy Rights Of Students, Damian Gordon, Paul J. Gibson, Brendan Tierney, Dympna O'Sullivan, Ioannis Stavrakakis, Andrea Curley
Conference Papers
The impact of COVID-19 has been widespread and far-reaching, and one domain that has experienced severe disruption is the university education sector, where the entire apparatus of teaching and assessment for many programmes of study had to move on-line in a matter of days. This was accomplished notably through enormous co-operation between staff and students in educational institutions (Adnan and Anwar, 2020). The negative economic impacts of COVID-19 on university students has been highlighted in terms of poor access to online resources, delayed graduation and lost internships with this effect felt more keenly by students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (Aucejo, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The state of African American romantic love and marriage has garnered increased scrutiny over the last 20 years, sparking great attention among scholarly studies, pop culture, and mainstream media to combat marriage decline. African American literature offers a complex view of marriage and romantic love via the works of Zora Neale Hurston as early as the 1930s that predates other studies. Hurstons Their Eyes Were Watching God and Hitting a Straight Lick with a Crooked Stick are the catalysts for understanding black romantic love, questions of marriage, and concerns about black male and female relationships then and now. A close …
Two Hundred Years Of Grit And Grind: A Mythological Geography In The Literary Landscape Of Memphis, Tennessee, Meredith Heath Boulden
Two Hundred Years Of Grit And Grind: A Mythological Geography In The Literary Landscape Of Memphis, Tennessee, Meredith Heath Boulden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Two Hundred Years of Grit and Grind explores literary texts that are set in Memphis and authored by native Memphians which offer scholars unique insight into the city of Memphis, Tennessee. While not intended as essentialized representations of an authentic Memphis, the texts in this dissertation provide an insiders view to Memphians perceptions of their local identity, one that Yi-Fu Tuan argues is but one of several much-needed perspectives into our understanding of a given place. As an entry point into a more comprehensive understanding of the South, Memphians ambivalence toward their status as residents of the Bluff City reflects …
Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes
Exploring Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Emotion Regulation, And Problem Behaviors Among Adolescents In Residential Treatment, Kiersten Alicia Hawes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The high prevalence of conditions among adolescents such as anxiety, depression, substance use and suicide has become a global concern. Given the growing rates of internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems at the onset of adolescence, researchers have begun to find interest in identifying associations that account for dysfunctional patterns and problem behaviors. Findings suggest that these negative psychological and behavioral outcomes could be linked to exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, violence, and household dysfunction. The present study investigated associations between ACEs, difficulties in emotion regulation, and problem behaviors among a sample of 43 adolescents age 11-17 …
Reclaiming The Revolutionaries: African American Organizing During The Interwar Period In Memphis, Tennessee, Matthew Isaacs
Reclaiming The Revolutionaries: African American Organizing During The Interwar Period In Memphis, Tennessee, Matthew Isaacs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The global black freedom struggle of the early twentieth century took many turns, while building momentum into the post-World War II era. Along the way, an interracial coterie of activists and disparate organizations rallied around a mass movement for black advancement. They enlarged avenues of resistance and developed strategies for cooperative alliances that laid the groundwork for future organizations and activists, often in areas that remain understudied. This dissertation examines one of those locations, Memphis, Tennessee, and its engagement with the global black freedom struggle during the interwar period. Due to a convergence of local, national, and international forces, the …
Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels
Social Media Interaction And Self-Perception In Adolescents And Young Adults With Cancer, Sarah Daniels
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The unique psychosocial needs of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer are often overlooked or left unmet during treatment (Zebrack, 2011). Self-development is an important task for all AYA, and it is often informed by social interaction (Goffman, 1959). Given that social interaction among AYA occurs in offline and online spaces, the role of social interaction on social media for self-development is curious (Calvin, 2020). But examining this relationship also requires thoughtful attention by researchers to adequately describe the population being studied (Davis et al., 2020). As such, this exploratory sequential mixed methods research study sought to address the …
Identifying Student, Institutional, And Economic Factors Associated With Increasing Tuition Revenue Through Tuition Discounting At Public Institutions, Bridgette Decent
Identifying Student, Institutional, And Economic Factors Associated With Increasing Tuition Revenue Through Tuition Discounting At Public Institutions, Bridgette Decent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Tuition discounting has long been an important component of revenue management at private institutions and has been steadily growing in prevalence in public institutions. The fundamental assumption of tuition discounting is that student enrollment behavior can be influenced by strategic optimization of student aid and tuition price. However, a literature review reveals the inherent tensions between relevant economic theories describing human behavior at the aggregate level, and student choice theories detailing the complex individual factors that combine to form a student enrollment decision. This three-part quantitative study evaluates trends in institutional tuition discount rates for first-time freshmen at public, four-year, …

Do Not Feed The Fetishizers: Boys Love Fans Resistance And Challenge Of Perceieved Reputation, Hailey Rose Coleman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Existing research on Boys Love (BL) fans has focused primarily on heterosexual womens consumption of the media. Queer audience members have rarely been included in BL studies. Drawing on autoethnographic materials and 36 in-depth interviews, this project documented the ways that individuals who self-identify as BL fans created, resisted, and challenged the perceived stigma that all BL fans are fetishizers of gay men. Respondents relied on Biographical Work to construct their identities and frame their experiences with BL media in relation to fetishizer exemplars. Some participants engaged in Identity Politics where they made claims about the wrong ways and right …

Multi-Modal Narrative Practices In Adult Esl: Fostering Investment In Language Learning And Negotiating Racism, Linguicism, & Identity, Mahmuda Sharmin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Language learners identity construction and language learning through narratives (Norton 2010; Johnson 2015) and multimodal technologies (Lam 2006; White 2007) have been found to be effective ways to facilitate ESL learning. Additionally, Multimodal pedagogies and narrative practices in the language classroom facilitate L2 learning, investment in language learning, and learners identity and agency construction (Crandall 2018; Johnson & Kendrick, 2017). Further, racism and linguicism are aspects of language learners lives that affect their language learning trajectories (Corona & Block, 2020; Dovchin, 2019). Few studies, however, examine how multimodal narrative practices in L2 classrooms can foster learners investment in language learning …

Nodesense2vec: Spatiotemporal Context-Aware Network Embedding For Heterogeneous Urban Mobility Data, Dakshak Keerthi Chandra, Jennifer Leopold, Yanjie Fu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
The problem of learning latent representations of heterogeneous networks with spatial and temporal attributes has been gaining traction in recent years, given its myriad of real-world applications. Most systems with applications in the field of transportation, urban economics, medical information, online e-commerce, etc., handle big data that can be structured into Spatiotemporal Heterogeneous Networks (SHNs), thereby making efficient analysis of these networks extremely vital. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal context-aware network embedding framework that jointly captures the spatial regularities between objects and the sequential transition patterns of human mobility. First, we model the heterogeneous urban mobility data collected …

The sensor is composed of a 32x32 thermopile array with the corresponding 33° × 33° field of view. The outputs of the sensor are sequential images in which each pixel contains a temperature value. According to the thermopile images, the activity recognition system first determines whether the target is within the tracking area; if the target is within the tracking area, the location of …
Examining Individual Differences In Attitudes Toward The Insanity Defense, Dominique M. Kornely
Examining Individual Differences In Attitudes Toward The Insanity Defense, Dominique M. Kornely
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of the present study was to examine how individual differences in stigma against people who are mentally ill, free will beliefs, just world beliefs, and sentencing goals are associated with attitudes toward the insanity defense. Because there are many misconceptions about what the insanity defense is, and how it is actually used as a sentence, the Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) plea may be underutilized due to public opinions reflecting misunderstanding and/or possible biases (Perlin, 2017). Understanding the relation between individual beliefs and attitudes about the insanity defense would help to better understand potential biases present …

This research explored academic supervisors’ experiences with emotion work specifically related to their role of supervision in higher degree by research (HDR) candidates and how supervisors managed the complexities inherent in the role of student supervision. This study utilised 45 to 90 minute semi-structured interviews with seven HDR supervisors and explored their lived experiences with emotion work, in the context of four Australian universities. A qualitative interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach was adopted to elicit a deep and rich understanding of this phenomenon. A comprehensive literature review informed the theoretical discussions and analysis of the data revealed four superordinate themes: …
Making Space For Themselves: Lesbian Separatism In Western Australia, Amber-Lia Van Aurich
Making Space For Themselves: Lesbian Separatism In Western Australia, Amber-Lia Van Aurich
Theses : Honours
This study documented and reconstructed the stories of lesbians who experienced separatism during the 1970s and 1980s in Western Australia. This era of history has received little attention, particularly the Western Australian context, therefore sharing these marginalised women’s stories addresses the knowledge gap and provides a sense of place and identity in the past. I aimed to explore Western Australian examples of lesbian separatism in addition to aspects of identity, connection, community, and culture. The research involved a narrative study of stories by six informants who self-identify as lesbian, collected in multiple one-hour interviews in situ and reconstructed into a …
Down The Rabbit Hole: An Exhibition – And – Alice In Wonderland Engaging With The Reflexive Project Of The Self: An Exegesis, Shana James
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a culturally significant text that is widely known across many cultures. In this Victorian story, a little girl follows the talking White Rabbit down a rabbit hole to uncover a fantastical parallel world. Alice in Wonderland has remained in print for over 150 years, highlighting its continued relevance to generations of readers. This exegesis investigates the making of visual artwork that responds to this significant story, exploring the symbology and metaphorical nature of the text and seeing the story as a “reflexive project of the self” (Giddens, 1991, p. 5).
I began this research having …
