Brain Drain Situation Of Thai Skilled Workers: Push-Pull Factors And Intentions To Return, Nawapat Choosuwan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Brain Drain occurs when a country loses human capital with specialized skills or with higher education due to worker emigration. In Thailand, the brain drain index has risen in recent years. As the problem of migration of Thai skilled workers remains and becomes worse, it is necessary to investigate the factors that contribute to brain drain of highly trained Thai professionals. The push and pull factors of international migration are used to investigate what motivates skilled people to leave their home country (push factor) and what motivates skilled workers to stay in the destination country (pull factor). Furthermore, the study …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A mixture of age diversity in workplace had been witnessed, yet an understanding of the association between multigenerational workforce and their work values was little known. As a result, many firms reported that the domestic conflicts were most likely to be due to the lack of generational understandability and appropriate HR policy in response to such a context. This study therefore aimed to: (1) examine the differences in work values across the generations of employees; (2) explore whether the demographic factors and parenthood status were associated with the work values of employees; (3) provide the policy suggestions/discussions on human resource …

This independent study examines a sample of n=4716 Thai elderly. The statistical techniques used in this study are Linear Regression and …

Privacy needs and stigma pose significant barriers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people sharing information related to their identities in traditional settings and research methods such as surveys and interviews. Fortunately, social media facilitates people’s belonging to and exchanging information within online LGBT communities. Compared to heterosexual respondents, LGBT users are also more likely to have accounts on social media websites and access social media daily. However, the current relevant LGBT studies on social media are not efficient or assume that any accounts that utilize LGBT-related words in their profile belong to individuals who identify as LGBT. Our …

Planning And Evaluating Policy To Address Information Inequalities: An Information Worlds Matrix Approach, Kim M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
One objective of public policy is to solve social problems and often it is through policy that digital inclusion efforts enter our information society. Digital technologies can help accelerate progress in fighting poverty, hunger and ill-health, in improving educational outcomes and in reducing gender and other inequalities. Digital inclusion is a means to empower underserved and marginalized populations. Policy related to digital inclusion often starts with building infrastructure and providing affordable access to information and communication technologies such as through phone connections, broadband, computers in classrooms or a computer (i.e., smartphone) in every pocket. But how can we know whether …

Coming To Terms: Using Contract Theory To Understand The Detroit Water Shutoffs, Marissa Jackson Sow
Law Faculty Publications
After the City of Detroit underwent financial takeover and filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history in 2013, the city’s emergency manager encouraged mass water shutoffs as a way of making the city’s water utility a more attractive asset for sale—and for privatization—by ridding the water department of its association with bad debt. The sale never took place, but the water shutoff, too, became the largest ever in American history, with over 141,000 homes subjected to water disconnections over a period of over six years. The governor of the State of Michigan ordered that the shutoffs be temporarily suspended …

Domestic Customers' Perceived Value Toward Thai Cultural Products, Krittanan Deedenkeeratisakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
As Thai cultural identity is one of the remarkable assets in Thai culture and has gained wider attention, there is a growing trend for the market to capture domestic customers' behavior. This study investigates consumers' value perceptions and their intentions to purchase Thai cultural products by extending the theory of consumption value through four values that influence perceived value of product attitude, which also affect purchase intention and customer satisfaction. Online Survey data from 412 people in Thailand were used to test the hypotheses, and content analysis of 9 in-depth interviewees was used to understand the product's perceptions better. The …

Environmental Ethics, Survival And Apocalypse: An Analysis Of Margaret Atwood’S Maddaddam Trilogy, Sarawut Kururatphan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This thesis examines the connection of ethics and survival in the pre- and post-apocalyptic worlds in Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy: Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013). It investigates the author’s imaginings of a dystopian society marked by rampant technocratic capitalism and unchecked scientism in Oryx and Crake. Applying Murray Bookchin's social ecology to shed light on the root causes of the apocalypse, it argues that hierarchical ideology and diversiform inequality deeply rooted in society lead to warped ethics, affecting the crisis. This thesis also examines environmental ethics which is embedded in the belief …

Queering The Migrant Experience: Gay Filipino Workers’ Performance Of Gender And Sexual Identities In Bangkok, Hans Kevin Madanguit
Queering The Migrant Experience: Gay Filipino Workers’ Performance Of Gender And Sexual Identities In Bangkok, Hans Kevin Madanguit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The Philippine migration scholarship heavily focuses on heteronormative issues that depict the migrant workers as heterosexuals. Due to this trend, there is a scarcity of studies on overseas Filipino workers who identify as part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Community. Hence, this qualitative research focuses on eleven documented Filipino workers in Thailand who are males assigned at birth and identify as gay homosexuals. Individual informal interviews were employed to investigate how they practice their non-normative gender and sexuality, given their multiple yet intersectional social identities in a country with vibrant queer cultures. It also probes the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Recent studies have focused on the role of Official Development Assistance (ODA) in financing infrastructural projects and rural development programs. This study demonstrates how Japanese and Filipino aid authorities facilitated a Japan ODA-funded Farm-to-Market Road (FMR) subproject as a solution aiming to achieve the Agrarian Reform Community’s (ARC) overall poverty reduction and rural economic growth agenda to contribute to this literature. Drawing on Foucault's governmentality, Escobar’s development discourse, and Li’s “The Will to Improve,” this study shows ODA as an alliance emphasizing power relations and analyzing processes and interactions within the ODA-funded FMR subproject management stages. This study also examines …

This paper explores the relationship between young people aged 15 to 24 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET) and socio-economic background in Thailand. Using a linear probability model with 16,329 samples with data from 2007 Socio-Economic Survey of Thailand and 12,813 samples with data from the 2017 Socio-Economic Survey of Thailand, I find that the results are sensitive to the definition of NEET used.
