Perspectives Of Interactions With Healthcare Providers Among Patients Who Are Blind, Nazanin M. Heydarian, Allyson S. Hughes, Osvaldo F. Morera, Ashley S. Bangert, Angela H. Frederick

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Healthcare providers’ (HCPs) stereotypes about the incompetence of blind and low-vision patients may lead them to patronize blind patients, over-focus on impairments, and neglect the presenting problem. The content of perceived HCP stereotypes about blind patients in the clinical setting was examined from the patient perspective with seven focus groups, including a total of 42 individual participants. Most participants reported an interaction when their HCPs treated them as if they were incompetent, and discussed how perceived evaluations of their warmth and competence impacted whether their HCPs trusted and respected them. Participants also discussed their evaluations of their HCPs’ warmth and …

Disenfranchised Losses: Grief And Growth In Non-Death Loss Events, Mae-Lynn Germany Jan 2021

Disenfranchised Losses: Grief And Growth In Non-Death Loss Events, Mae-Lynn Germany

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Although non-death losses (NDLs) can be recognized as grieveable events, they rarely benefit from the social recognition, support, and empirical examination afforded to death-related bereavement. Disenfranchised losses can result in prolonged grief reactions and lead to increased vulnerability, challenges to meaning making, and confusion. Dynamics related to the global COVID-19 pandemic and political unrest in 2020 have resulted in myriad NDLs for individuals and communities, making the salience of and for fuller understanding of NDLs more important than ever. To this end we examined tangible and intangible loss experiences (e.g. loss of safety, security, respect, housing) associated with NDL events, …

Antecedents: Diminished Perceptions Of Po Fit, Pg Fit, Ps Fit, Pj Fit, Frances M. Preston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines antecedents that negatively impact fit, specifically person-organization (PO) fit, person-group (PG) fit, person-supervisor (PS) fit, and person-job (PJ) fit. Organizational members who do not perceive fit with their environment may experience multiple negative outcomes including workplace stress and strain. However, antecedents that negatively impact fit have received scant attention. This dissertation contributes to the literature by assessing hostility from multiple levels of analysis as antecedents to the corresponding level of diminished perceptions of fit. This dissertation further introduces and defines the construct of organizational hostility, provides a measurement tool, and situates organizational hostility within a nomological network. …

Rising Above The Stigma: Developing Young Leaders Through Peer Mentoring, Shawn Miller Jan 2021

Rising Above The Stigma: Developing Young Leaders Through Peer Mentoring, Shawn Miller

Graduate Research Papers

Permanence is ideally the ultimate goal of the child welfare system, however it is unrealistic to believe that every young adult transitioning out of care will not only find a permanent home, but have had the opportunity to build the social capital needed for a successful transition in today’s society (Scannapieco, Smith, Blakeney-Strong, 2015).

The Impact Of Advocacy And Social Justice Work On Nonprofit Funding And Support, Brittany Appleton Jan 2021

The Impact Of Advocacy And Social Justice Work On Nonprofit Funding And Support, Brittany Appleton

Graduate Research Papers

Advocacy and social justice work has become a widely discussed topic over the past year, especially in the nonprofit world. As organizations work to move their mission forward and address critical issues in their community, they must balance the delicate relationships they have with their clients, their supporters, other organizations, and the community as a whole. This includes navigating their mission, vision, and values and the values and beliefs of supporters and community members. Taking an active role in advocacy and social justice work can impact these relationships, but little research has been done that shows what that impact could …

Educators’ Emotions Involved In The Transition To Online Teaching In Higher Education, Dawn Naylor, Julie Nyanjom

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Higher education (HE) has seen a growing trend towards online study. However, teaching is deeply connected to one’s beliefs, values, commitments and to relationships with students. A change in the mode of instruction and pedagogy has the potential to disrupt these deep and personal connections giving rise to an emotional response. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the nature and significance of emotions in HE educators transitioning to online teaching. Findings indicate a dynamic relationship between the type of emotional responses and the amount of institutional support. Based on the type of emotional response and amount of …

The Psychological And Physical Well-Being Of Transgender People, Charlene Johnson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine components of support that may predict better mental health outcomes for transgender people. Gender is typically associated with natal sex. When a persons gender identity does not match their assigned sex at birth, living their life and feeling accepted by society can be challenging. Previous research suggested that support across a variety of settings such as in the home, interpersonal relationships, work, and academic settings are predictive of better overall life outcomes and when this support is lacking, psychological distress such as depression, anxiety, shame, guilt, low self-esteem, and suicidal ideation may …

Being Needed, Cared For, And Present: Belonging And Disability In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In North America, Shannon M. Trecartin, Mikelle Wile, Terrance P. Trecartin, Petr Činčala

Faculty Publications

Many Christian churches seek to be places of belonging, yet present barriers to inclusion. The present research focuses on disability and belonging in members of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in North America. Data from the SDA Global Church Survey (2017–2018) were used to measure attendance, perceived care, and sense of being needed. Results: Differences in attendance, leadership, and “feeling cared for” were observed. The findings of this study suggest that the SDA Church has had both successes and room for growth in terms of creating opportunities for belonging among people with disabilities. Implications for other denominations are also discussed.

The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Ingrid Weiss Slikkers, Erick Pena Jan 2021

The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Ingrid Weiss Slikkers, Erick Pena

Faculty Publications

It was in the late 1990’s that the original Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs- https:// www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/index.html) study through CDC-Kaiser Permanente was done. This groundbreaking research opened the door to the reality that childhood and household challenges, including but not limited to abuse, neglect and even divorce, can dramatically impact a person’s health and well-being throughout life. Much work has been done since 1997 to further study and subsequently reduce ACEs’ impact, but the sad truth is that although much effort has been put forth to combat adverse experiences, ACEs are still very prevalent today and even our own congregations are touched. …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper examines methodological issues related to an innovative online qualitative research project that explored ‘safe spaces’ with mental health service users. The project used photovoice and focus groups conducted via Zoom videoconferencing software. Eleven participants shared photographs, discussing their meaning and significance in relation to ‘safe spaces’. The photographs were then synthesised into an artist's impression of a safe space and transcripts of the online photovoice discussion analysed thematically and triangulated with the artist's impression. The paper provides a reflexive discussion of the research process and explores methodological and ethical implications of conducting sensitive qualitative research in online spaces.

Mediation Ethics After The Singapore Convention, Zachary R. Calo

Scholarly Works

The aim of this essay is to consider the shape of mediation ethics after the Singapore Convention. It assesses the role of ethics with the Convention framework, as well as how the Convention can inform broader conversations about mediation ethics. The international commercial mediation landscape initiated by the Convention commends certain approaches to ethics for its effective and efficient operation. In particular, it is argued that the Convention system is best complemented by codes of ethics that are clear and standardized in their norms as well as modest in the scope of their regulatory ambitions. An ethical system defined by …

Sent Out Or Sent Home: Understanding Racial Disparities Across Suspension Types From Critical Race Theory And Quantcrit Perspectives, Yolanda Anyon, Kathryn Wiley, Ceema Samimi, Miguel Trujillo Jan 2021

Sent Out Or Sent Home: Understanding Racial Disparities Across Suspension Types From Critical Race Theory And Quantcrit Perspectives, Yolanda Anyon, Kathryn Wiley, Ceema Samimi, Miguel Trujillo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Although in-school suspensions may be viewed as less severe than out-of-school suspensions, both discipline consequences limit students’ access to learning opportunities and are negatively associated with a range of educational outcomes. Moreover, if sending students out of class perpetuates the same racial disparities as sending them home, this practice does not realize the equity goals of discipline reforms over the last decade. Our study draws on Critical Race Theory and QuantCrit to understand racial discipline gaps across in-school and out-of-school suspensions using data from students and schools in one large district. Results of multilevel regression models indicate similar racial disparities …

Incorporating stakeholder engagement into environmental management may help in the pursuit of novel approaches for addressing complex water resource problems. However, evidence about how and under what circumstances stakeholder engagement enables desirable changes remains elusive. In this paper, we develop a conceptual framework for studying social and environmental changes possible through stakeholder engagement in water resource management, from inception to outcomes. We synthesize concepts from multiple literatures to provide a framework for tracing linkages from contextual conditions, through engagement process design features, to social learning, community capacity building, and behavioral change at individual, group, and group network levels, and ultimately …

Starting With Life: Murder Sentencing And Feminist Prison Abolitionist Praxis, Debra Parkes Jan 2021

Starting With Life: Murder Sentencing And Feminist Prison Abolitionist Praxis, Debra Parkes

All Faculty Publications

Advocates of decarcation often focus their critiques on imprisonment for non-violent offences. In this vein, current advocacy efforts to end mandatory sentences in Canada tend to carve out “serious violent offences” as not part of a reform agenda. In this chapter, Debra Parkes sketches out the contours of an argument for why feminists might not want to cede that ground, why anti-carceral feminism might involve centering our analysis on the most, rather than the least, serious crimes – starting with those who are serving life sentences for murder. Parkes identifies four non-exhaustive reasons for that focus. The first reason relates …

Distance Education Administrators Starting Online Programs In Higher Education: A Case Study Of The Tasks, Processes, And Challenges Of Change To E-Learning, Jason P. Johnston

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

While total enrollment for Title IV universities in the United States has declined 4 percent from 2013-2018, overall online course enrollment has rapidly increased by 22 percent (National Center for Education Statistics, 2020). Not long ago, distance education had limited diffusion in universities and was considered a tertiary, experimental “add-on” to education (Burnette, 2015). Now, online learning is becoming a transformative power striking profound influence and change on all aspects of higher education (Otte & Benke, 2006). Beaudoin (2015) claims this may be the most crucial change impacting education since the printing press. This study explores the tasks, processes, and …

Exploring Preservice Teachers’ Practices And Perspectives On Whiteness: Development And Initial Validation Of The Whiteness Components Scale, Falynn Amor Thompson

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

For decades, educational scholars have considered and investigated a number of factors (e.g., teacher beliefs and expectations, racism, and inadequate school resources) that maintain the negative schooling experiences of Black students. Recently, scholars have identified components of whiteness as factors informing the adverse educational experiences of these students. To date, however, few researchers have empirically examined attitudes, behaviors, and perspectives of whiteness in educational settings and among educational stakeholders. In addition, no study has explored an association between whiteness components and Black students’ overall educational experiences. The dearth of these studies in the educational and psychological literatures is due in …
