Resentenced And Released: Re-Entry Needs Following Release From Juvenile Life Without Parole, Daphne M. Brydon Jan 2021

Resentenced And Released: Re-Entry Needs Following Release From Juvenile Life Without Parole, Daphne M. Brydon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over 2,100 individuals serving juvenile life without paroles (JLWOP) sentences in the U.S. became eligible for resentencing following the 2016 Montgomery v. Louisiana Supreme Court ruling. Michigan housed an estimated 370 juvenile lifers at that time, the second largest JLWOP community in the country and has since resentenced and released approximately 120 juvenile lifers. Folx released from prison encounter many barriers to successful re-entry. Barriers are often amplified for those incarcerated as adolescents. Further, services are de-prioritized for folx serving JLWOP sentences, which can be especially damaging for this community whose life experiences are marked by high rates of trauma, …

A Grounded Theory Inquiry Into The Pedagogical Socialization Of Graduate Students Within Graduate Quantitative Methods Courses, Amanda Kay Thomas Jan 2021

A Grounded Theory Inquiry Into The Pedagogical Socialization Of Graduate Students Within Graduate Quantitative Methods Courses, Amanda Kay Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quantitative methods are one of the most highly technical fields of study within social sciences graduate programs. Although classroom pedagogy is an important factor connected to student success within graduate quantitative methods courses little is known on the pedagogical socialization experiences of masters and doctoral students. The purpose of this grounded theory inquiry was to discover graduate students perspectives on their pedagogical socialization experiences and the norms, values and role expectations transmitted during the teaching and learning of quantitative methods. Narrative data was collected from in-depth interviews among a theoretical sample of 31 masters and doctoral students enrolled in introductory, …

A Case Study Of Children's Programming In Transitional Housing, Crystal L. Coffman Jan 2021

A Case Study Of Children's Programming In Transitional Housing, Crystal L. Coffman

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects

Background: Female-headed households with children makeup nearly 30% of the homeless population, and are challenged to become self-sufficient while embodying multiple roles with inadequate supports (Bassuk, 2010; Crncec, 2008; Fisher, 2000; Schultz-Krohn & Tyminski, 2018). While there is growing literature to support the social-cultural and occupational needs of adults in this population, few programs and research efforts have explored the life skill and developmental needs of children (Fleary et al., 2019).

Purpose: The purpose and objectives of this capstone project were to examine the planning, execution, follow-up, and contextual adaptation of the programs provided to children and youth at a …

Increasing Minority Representation In The Healthcare Field Through A Girl’S Summer Camp, Anna Christiansen, Dzifa Agbossey-Dimado, Adejoke Ayoola Jan 2021

Increasing Minority Representation In The Healthcare Field Through A Girl’S Summer Camp, Anna Christiansen, Dzifa Agbossey-Dimado, Adejoke Ayoola

Summer Research

  • Despite increasing diversity among the United States’ population, the healthcare workforce, particularly in highly skilled roles, has failed to keep pace. The underrepresentation of minority groups within healthcare professions comes at the expense of quality and access to care, patient satisfaction, acceptability, general experience, and health outcomes.
  • One promising approach to addressing this health inequity is increasing the diversity of the healthcare workforce across all skill-level roles so that it is representative of the population which it serves. Research suggests that exposing underrepresented groups to healthcare professions as a possible career path during formative career planning years (early middle school), …

Grow Your Own: Educating Social Workers In Rural And Frontier Areas To Address The Behavioral Health Workforce Crisis, Michelle M. Levy, Christina D. Boyd

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Workforce shortages in behavioral health are a longstanding reality in most rural areas. Given the increasing impact of mental health and substance abuse in rural communities, it is critical to seek solutions to address the inadequate number of behavioral health professions in these areas. This paper focuses on a university’s efforts to prepare and support master’s level social workers for practice in their rural and frontier communities to address behavioral health workforce shortages.

Attuning To Need: Reconceptualizing “Help” In Poor Rural Areas, Jennifer M. Frank, Laura Brierton Granruth, Brittany Leffler, Rachel Preibisch, Dawn Watson, Heather Girvin, Mary Glazier Jan 2021

Attuning To Need: Reconceptualizing “Help” In Poor Rural Areas, Jennifer M. Frank, Laura Brierton Granruth, Brittany Leffler, Rachel Preibisch, Dawn Watson, Heather Girvin, Mary Glazier

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Social isolation is closely linked to overall health and well-being and is a serious concern for those in rural areas. Our research seeks insights into the needs experienced in poor rural areas by utilizing letter writing between students and community agency participants as a research methodology. In the letters, we observed that community participants relied upon friend and family style relationships and even viewed their agency relationships as such. This suggests that transforming "professional helping relationships" into alliances that are less impersonal might be in order. Such relationships and connections seemed conducive to the development of empowering self-efficacy. This finding …

The Effects Of Yoga On Incarcerated Youth, Kyle Eyman Jan 2021

The Effects Of Yoga On Incarcerated Youth, Kyle Eyman

ETD Archive

Prior research has shown that yoga and mindfulness-based practices have been used to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety (Chong et al., 2011; Riley et al., 2014). Additionally, there has been a push to introduce yoga into prison through the Prison Yoga Project (PYP). Yoga has been studied in adult prison and has had success in aiding inmates with improvements of stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as improvement of self-regulation (Auty et al., 2015). However, yoga and the PYP are unstudied in juvenile correctional facilities. The present study examined the usage of the PYP in one juvenile …

Literature Review: Covid-19'S Impact On Violence, Jean Cheek, Laura Ashworth Jan 2021

Literature Review: Covid-19'S Impact On Violence, Jean Cheek, Laura Ashworth

VCU Health Nursing

Violence has been exacerbated by the pandemic, resulting in a plethora of research that can be complementary and contradictory. A preliminary thematic literature search was performed using keywords such as human trafficking, IPV, sexual assault, pandemic, covid, and child abuse. This resulted in over 100 articles between 2019 and 2021. The literature review revealed common themes such as pandemics and natural disasters increase the risk for violence in women, children, and marginalized populations. Stay-at-home orders put vulnerable populations in closer proximity to the abuser. A low socioeconomic standing increases the propensity to abuse and be abused. Calls to human trafficking …

Operationalizing A New Method For Defining And Scaling Social Innovations Using Tiny Home Communities As A Case Study, Jennifer H. Wilson Jan 2021

Operationalizing A New Method For Defining And Scaling Social Innovations Using Tiny Home Communities As A Case Study, Jennifer H. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social innovations are new approaches to addressing unmet need. In an increasingly globalized and interconnected world, social innovations propagate rapidly in response to the dynamic conditions of our modern world. An example of an emergent social innovation, tiny home communities are gaining traction as a more economically, socially, and environmentally favorable response to homelessness and inadequacies in the current shelter and housing system. The use of tiny homes communities (that is, intentional clusters of small-scale structures) as an innovative response to homelessness is relatively new. As such, there is limited empirical evidence on the topic. Lack of research and defined …

15th Annual Higher Ground Women's Leadership Conference Booklet, The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute At Virginia Commonwealth University Jan 2021

15th Annual Higher Ground Women's Leadership Conference Booklet, The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute At Virginia Commonwealth University

The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute Publications

The practice of leadership is most often understood within the

context of relationships inside organizations and institutions. The

boundaries that dictated our lives months before have all but

dissolved, prompting the need to reconsider our definition of

leadership, where it takes place, and who controls it.

Circumstances and opportunities have required women to

readjust their expectations and what is expected of them. While

the past 18-months took a physical, emotional, social, and political

toll on many families, it has also provided a moment for reflection,

resignation, recovery, and reimagination of what our lives could

be beyond this moment. It has …

Direct File Of Youthful Offenders In Florida, Onetha Belgrave Jan 2021

Direct File Of Youthful Offenders In Florida, Onetha Belgrave

Undergraduate Research Posters 2021

In the State of Florida, children are sent through the court system by the appointed state prosecutor to adult jails, “forced” to take plea bargains, and enter into a diversion program or prison. Upon exiting this system, they face barriers finding employment or housing. The label “convicted felon” follows them for the rest of their lives. The lack of resources and opportunities might be the reason behind the high recidivism rate. In this project, we explore the issues regarding youth offenders direct file, how it affects families especially those who are “at-risk”, why blacks are arrested and incarcerated more than …

Data was collected retrospectively from electronic medical records of Stage IV metastatic lung cancer patients with palliative care referrals between January 2019 and March 2020. The palliative care referrals between January 2019 and August 2019 were given per oncologist discretion in timing compared to August 2019-March 2020 when new patients received nurse navigator driven palliative care referrals immediately upon diagnosis. Data analysis looked at correlations for each …

Meek Mill's Trauma: Brutal Policing As An Adverse Childhood Experience, Todd J. Clark, Caleb G. Conrad, Andre D.P. Cummings, Amy D. Johnson Jan 2021

Meek Mill's Trauma: Brutal Policing As An Adverse Childhood Experience, Todd J. Clark, Caleb G. Conrad, Andre D.P. Cummings, Amy D. Johnson

St. Thomas Law Review

Meek Mill, in his intimate autobiographical tracks of Trauma, Oodles O’Noodles Babies, and Otherside of America, describes experiencing not just several instances of childhood trauma as identified by the CDC-Kaiser Permanente study, but as a teenager, he suffered additional cruel trauma at the hands of U.S. police and a criminal justice system that wrongly imprisoned and unfairly positioned him in a revolving door between probation and prison. The data tells us that the trauma Meek experienced as a child and teenager statistically predicts a poorer life expectancy for him than those individuals that experienced no trauma or little trauma as …

Listening To Transgender Patients And Their Providers In Non-Metropolitan Spaces: Needs, Gaps, And Patient-Provider Discrepancies, Michelle Teti, Loren Bauerband, Tyler Myroniuk, Erica Koegler

Social Work Faculty Works

Trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) patients need better care; providers need TGNC focused medical trainings. TGNC health conferences can help, yet these events occur mostly in urban centers. Meanwhile, patients in non-metropolitan areas often face significant discrimination and notably poor access to TGNC care. This study explores the ongoing needs of TGNC patients and their providers following a one-day TGNC health conference in a small town in the American Midwest. Exploratory semi-structured interviews were used to gather in-depth information from TGNC conference attendees (N = 25). Theme analysis methods were used to identify areas of need for future trainings. Providers …
