Dataset For Assessing Water Literacy (Click Data), Nicole D. Ladue Feb 2021

Dataset For Assessing Water Literacy (Click Data), Nicole D. Ladue

Research Datasets

Given the importance of fresh water, we investigated undergraduate students' understanding of water flow and its consequences. We probed introductory geology students' pre-instruction knowledge using a classroom management system at two large research-intensive universities. Open-ended clicker questions, where students click directly on diagrams using their smart device (e.g., cell phone, tablet) to respond, probed students' predictions about: (1) groundwater movement and (2) velocity and erosion in a river channel. Approximately one-third of students correctly identified groundwater flow as having lateral and vertical components; however, the same number of students identified only vertical components to flow despite the diagram depicting enough …

Gratitude, Stephanie Weddington, Megan Paul Feb 2021

Gratitude, Stephanie Weddington, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is gratitude?

There are three ways of thinking about gratitude—as a state, a trait, or a tendency that can be improved through practice. A person can experience a brief state of gratitude in response to a specific event or another person’s kind actions (Emmons & McCullough, 2003). Gratitude is also considered a more enduring personality trait, disposition, or life orientation in which an individual has a general propensity to feel grateful for, notice, and appreciate the positives in day-to-day life (McCullough et al., 2002; Wood et al., 2010). Finally, individuals can enhance their tendency to feel grateful over time …

Drinking Behavior Among College Students: Interventions To Increase Mindfulness And Social Capital, Jenna C. Anderson, Antonio J. Gardner, Barry Hunt Feb 2021

Drinking Behavior Among College Students: Interventions To Increase Mindfulness And Social Capital, Jenna C. Anderson, Antonio J. Gardner, Barry Hunt

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The impacts of drinking behaviors are far-reaching, with college student drinking contributing to over 1,500 deaths and an estimated 696,000 assaults on college campuses each year (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism [NIAAA], 2019). There are a variety of explanations to explain why college students engage in risky drinking behaviors. However, there is evidence to suggest that drinking and other substance use may be a result of complex psychological origins, including adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This paper reviews the literature available on ACEs among college students, how these experiences impact alcohol use among this population, and potential areas for …

Examining The Causal Impact Of Prenatal Home Visiting On Birth Outcomes: A Propensity Score Analysis, Elizabeth R. Anthony, Robert L. Fischer

Faculty Scholarship

Objectives: In Ohio, African American babies die at 2.5–3 times the rate of White babies. Preterm birth and low birth weight are the leading causes of infant mortality. Home visiting is an evidence-based strategy for serving low-income pregnant women; however, there are relatively few rigorous studies examining its effect on birth outcomes. Methods: This study uses a propensity score technique to estimate the causal effect of participation in home visiting on prematurity and low birth weight among a low-income, predominantly African American sample (N = 26,814). Results: We found that participation in home visiting significantly reduced the odds of experiencing …

Capitalism, Migration, And Adult Education: Toward A Critical Project In The Second Language Learning Class, Alisha M.B. Heinemann, Lilia Monzó Feb 2021

Capitalism, Migration, And Adult Education: Toward A Critical Project In The Second Language Learning Class, Alisha M.B. Heinemann, Lilia Monzó

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Migration has become both a consequence of and support structure for global racialised capitalism. A presumed source of support for the people who migrate is adult education, especially the second language learning class. However, as a state organized institution, the policies and practices that govern second-language courses serve to inculcate the ideologies and values that support a racialised capitalist system. We draw on two case examples – the U.S. and Germany – to demonstrate these entanglements. We engage Freire’s critical pedagogy wherein learning contexts encourage students to question the realities of their lives, and Foucault’s ideas regarding heterotopian places where …

Transitioning To College: Experiences Of Successful First-Generation College Students, Jonathan R. Ricks, Jeffrey M. Warren

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This qualitative study explored the high school to college transition experiences of ten successful first-generation college students (FGCS). Participants were college seniors at an historically black university in the United States. A generic qualitative research design was used, including in-depth, semi-structured interviews to collect and analyze data. Participants reported that the transition experience led to confusion with academic and financial procedures, various emotions including anxiety and fear, the realization that they had deficits in academic skills, and the receipt of support from family members and others. Cultural and social capital appeared to play key roles in their success. Student affairs …

Diversity And Inclusion Toolbox: Action Items For The Nonprofit Sector, Donovan Branche Phd, Karen Ford Dsw Feb 2021

Diversity And Inclusion Toolbox: Action Items For The Nonprofit Sector, Donovan Branche Phd, Karen Ford Dsw

#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference

There is a critical lack of diversity in leadership, particularly African-American women, across all sectors. Given that the nonprofit sector is an integral part of the social system, it makes sense to have leaders that reflect the social fabric of the United States. Diversifying the nonprofit work is an important goal, not only given underrepresentation but also because of looming population shifts. This paper builds on previous mixed methods research by the authors by adding concrete implications and action points to increase diversity and inclusion.

Attentiveness To Relationships Is Vital In A Highly Dynamic Organization, Terry Fernsler Mnpl, Phd

#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference

Columbia-Pacific Resource Conservation and Economic Development District, a rural nonprofit organization, is followed through the process of dramatic change from a little-known conservation organization to a highly responsive and important economic and community development player in a four-county region. The organization managed a change from a state of lethargy to one in which governing board members became highly engaged, enthusiastic participants and leaders guiding the organization to significant impact. After the organization’s participants adopted complexity, Columbia-Pacific RC&EDD developed a strong reputation for innovation and impact. Leadership took a systems approach to manage change internally and guide positive approaches throughout its …

Small Nonprofit Collaboration, Terrence Fernsler, Karen A. Ford Dsw

#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference

A growing and current body of literature discuss collaborative best practices, pitfalls, funder pressures, and present case studies. Missing from this literature is the representative voices of small nonprofits and their views regarding collaborative activities designed to reduce fixed costs, reach more clients, maximize fundraising, and manage external environments. Small nonprofits have been encouraged to consider collaboration to leverage their resources and viability. Many rural nonprofit organizations can be classified as small nonprofits. These organizations respond to local needs with people deeply invested in their communities. In this study, representatives of small nonprofit organizations were surveyed to learn whether collaboration …
