Goals-Of-Care & End-Of-Life Quality In Relapsed High-Risk Leukemia: Silent Conversations, Lacy Jo Graham

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

BACKGROUND: The distorted association of “end of life (EOL)” with “goals of care (GOC)” has “silenced” crucial goals discussions in patients with relapsed high-risk leukemia, which raises concerns for the provision of care that is inconsistent with patient’s values and preferences.

AIM: The two main goals of this study were to quantify hematologists rate of participation in a GOC pathway initiative during two separate months, then explore their definition and barriers to having/documenting GOC discussions.

DESIGN: Mixed-methods, explanatory sequential design (follow-up explanations variant).

SAMPLE: Quan: Hematology inpatient admissions during the months of October 2020 and January …

Against Personal Ventilator Reallocation, Joel Michael Reynolds, Laura Guidry-Grimes, Katie Savin Apr 2021

Against Personal Ventilator Reallocation, Joel Michael Reynolds, Laura Guidry-Grimes, Katie Savin

All Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease of 2019) pandemic has led to intense conversations about ventilator allocation and reallocation during a crisis standard of care. Multiple voices in the media and multiple state guidelines mention reallocation as a possibility. Drawing upon a range of neuroscientific, phenomenological, ethical, and sociopolitical considerations, the authors argue that taking away someone's personal ventilator is a direct assault on their bodily and social integrity. They conclude that personal ventilators should not be part of reallocation pools and that triage protocols should be immediately clarified to explicitly state that personal ventilators will be protected in all cases.

Transcending Adversity: Trauma-Informed Educational Development, Mays Imad Apr 2021

Transcending Adversity: Trauma-Informed Educational Development, Mays Imad

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The purpose of this article is to reflect on the pertinence and utility of using a trauma-informed lens in educational development. A trauma-informed approach is a framework grounded in an understanding of and responsiveness to the impact of trauma. After I describe the primary source of traumatic stress many faculty members are experiencing, I offer trauma-informed suggestions for how educational developers can help mitigate the effects of that stress. Importantly, in order to do this work of supporting faculty effectively and sustainably, it is critical that educational developers continue to attend to their own well-being. The overarching theme of this …

Fractal Reflection: Cultivating Community And Meaning In Times Of Crises, Deandra Little, Joshua Caulkins, Eric C. Kaldor, Lindsay Wheeler

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The Pandemic Educational Development Research Collaborative (PEDRC) formed in April 2020 to record research-participants’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic racism crises and includes 18 educational developers across various 4-year institutions, types of centers, and positions in the field. The novel research methodology used by PEDRC, called “fractal reflection,” includes an iterative process of reflection, analysis, and meaning-making at the individual, paired, and group levels. However, this methodology served as more than just a means to collect data; it also provided a set of effective reflective practices to support educational developers managing the emotional labor of their work in …

Healthcare altruism and dysconscious healthism are terms proposed to recognize the barriers to healthcare access faced by not only individuals with hearing loss but also all minority populations. The implications of an integrated healthcare model to provide services to individuals who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing, or DeafBlind (D/HH/DB) are explored. Front End Justice: Diverting People Affected By Mental Illness From The Criminal Justice System, Ariel Esqueda, Kelliann Kutschke, Matthew Miller, Kayleigh Wendland Apr 2021

Front End Justice: Diverting People Affected By Mental Illness From The Criminal Justice System, Ariel Esqueda, Kelliann Kutschke, Matthew Miller, Kayleigh Wendland

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Many of the people caught up in the criminal justice system are non-violent offenders struggling with mental illness, which cannot and should not be addressed through incarceration. Our jails and prisons are ill-equipped to provide effective mental health services. Incarceration compounds the problem by contributing to increased psychological distress. We are relying on the criminal justice system to respond to mental illness, rather than investing fully in the spectrum of mental health care from prevention to recovery. Minnesota must invest in diverting people affected by mental illness away from the criminal justice system and into community-based treatment, services, and supports …

The Lgbtq Health Disparities Gap: Access To Healthcare For Lgbtq Individuals In The United States And The Impact It Has On Their Health, Clarissa E. Dennis Apr 2021

The Lgbtq Health Disparities Gap: Access To Healthcare For Lgbtq Individuals In The United States And The Impact It Has On Their Health, Clarissa E. Dennis

Honors Theses

Within the United States, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals statistically face a higher health disparity rate than heterosexuals. Studies show that LGBTQ individuals are often hesitant to seek care, or do not return for follow up care because they experience unwelcoming environments or uncomfortable encounters with healthcare providers. The advancement of medical education in order to create more culturally competent healthcare providers, as well as a more welcoming healthcare environment, could begin the process of closing this health disparities gap. Not only do negative encounters affect the physical health of LGBTQ individuals, but there is also adverse …

Experiences Of Successful African American And Hispanic Non-Traditional Single Mothers At An Urban Community College, Gerald Maitre Apr 2021

Experiences Of Successful African American And Hispanic Non-Traditional Single Mothers At An Urban Community College, Gerald Maitre

All Theses And Dissertations

Single parents who are public welfare recipients and seek to complete a college degree face many obstacles to persist and stay enrolled. Factors such as (a) being custodial parents of a child(ren), (b) juggling a job and family responsibilities, and (c) dealing with financial strains, to name a few, can create role overload which can be daunting (Weber & Tribe, 2019). Because these barriers are present, it is essential to know the motivational orientation of the single parent who has persisted and stay enrolled. Besides documenting the research on programming and policies, the present study explored what motivation students needed …

The Effects Of Physical Activity On Rhr, Tasha Abraham Apr 2021

The Effects Of Physical Activity On Rhr, Tasha Abraham

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect that increased physical activity has on an individual’s RHR, or resting heart rate. RHRs are determined by many factors such as fitness levels, stress management, caffeine intake, diet, thyroid conditions, and other heart rate influencing factors. In the US, the normal RHR of a healthy person ranges from 60-100. Higher RHR’s are linked to many different health issues, while lower RHRs are typically used as indicators of good heart health and fitness. It is important to note though that, with the exceptions of young and very healthy individuals, an RHR that …
