Preparing Future Healthcare Professionals: The Relationship Between Resilience, Emotional Intelligence, And Age, Cindy Lee Mcguire
Preparing Future Healthcare Professionals: The Relationship Between Resilience, Emotional Intelligence, And Age, Cindy Lee Mcguire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Preparing students for a successful career should be the goal of any healthcare educational program. However, traditional approaches in healthcare education are primarily focused on the technical components and neglect the competencies needed to navigate the emotional labor associated with clinical practice. With increased stress and demands related to emotional labor, as evident in recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare professionals are likely to encounter adverse events and emotionally challenging situations. The purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional study was to explore the relationship among resilience, emotional intelligence (EI), and age in students enrolled in healthcare programs. Convenience sampling …
Experiences That Support Persistence And Retention Of Latinx First-Generation College Students (Fgcs) At Community Colleges, Veronica Rios
Experiences That Support Persistence And Retention Of Latinx First-Generation College Students (Fgcs) At Community Colleges, Veronica Rios
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this instrumental case study was to describe experiences of successful Latinx first-generation college students that support persistence and retention toward graduation for Latinx first-generation college students at California community colleges. The study was framed using Tinto’s retention theory. Successful Latinx first-generation college students were defined as those who have attained graduation from a California community college. This study focused on Latinx first-generation college students not persisting toward graduation at California community colleges, a situation that extends to the national level. This case study included nine Latinx first-generation college students, and the researcher collected data through virtual semistructured …

How Did You Become A Police Officer? Entry-Related Motives And Concerns Of Women And Men In Policing, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Starr J. Solomon, Rachael M. Rief
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
As police agencies in the United States suffer declining applications and struggle to recruit women, the National Institute of Justice has identified workforce development as a priority research area. To recruit more effectively, we must understand what attracts people to policing and what deters them. We surveyed officers in two Midwestern police departments (n = 832) about entry motivations and concerns and examined gender differences. Serve/protect motivations were most important for men and women, though women rated the category significantly higher. Women and non-White officers rated legacy motives higher than did males and White officers. Women reported more concerns overall …

Developmental Status Of Young Children In Foster Care, Jill Mcleigh, Cecy Lazcano, Karlyn Tunnell
Developmental Status Of Young Children In Foster Care, Jill Mcleigh, Cecy Lazcano, Karlyn Tunnell
Health Status, Outcomes, and Literacy and Healthcare Utilization
Children in foster care (CFC) may be at higher risk for developmental problems. This study sought to determine (1) the percentage of CFC with developmental problems seen at an integrated primary care clinic and (2) whether the presence of various risk factors was associated with increased odds of developmental problems in general and across developmental domains. This cross-sectional study used the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, Third Edition, demographic, and health-related data retrieved from electronic health records. The study included 796 children aged 1 to 66 months seen at an integrated primary care clinic exclusively serving CFC. Frequencies and percentages of …
How Can Public Child Welfare Agencies Get And Keep A Great Workforce?, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
How Can Public Child Welfare Agencies Get And Keep A Great Workforce?, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
QIC-Tips
Public child welfare agencies continue to face complex challenges including high workforce turnover. An examination of federal data found that, from 2003 to 2015, states experienced 14-22% annual turnover rates, with caseworkers staying on the job for an average of 1.8 years. Such turnover increases workloads for remaining workers and negatively impacts children and families. The QIC-WD is working with eight jurisdictions to better understand turnover and test interventions to improve workforce retention. The following tips were compiled based on the experience of QIC-WD sites. They are intended to help child welfare administrators, state legislators, or other local policymakers consider …
Mental Health Outcomes Of Various Types Of Fear Among University Students Who Have An Undocumented Legal Status During The Donald Trump Presidency, Liliana Campos
Doctoral Dissertations
Having an undocumented legal status is a risk factor for mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety among university students. Much of the literature on the experiences of university students who hold an undocumented legal status has primarily focused on better understanding the educational, social, financial, and legal challenges among undergraduate students. The literature has addressed how some of these difficulties impact components of their social and mental health wellness. Yet, there is still a dearth of research focused on further understanding the experiences of students who hold an undocumented legal status from a psychological perspective, and specifically, with …

Dissertations
The purpose of this theoretical project was to examine the available research surrounding preadolescent eating disorders with particular focus on prevalence and risk factors. The author proposed that social media and bullying should be considered as specific risk factors for this demographic in light of the increased media device use among children. Next, the author examined cognitive functioning, child development, and learning theories as they relate to the influence of social media an bullying on the development of eating disorders in children as well as current research on protective factors, prevention, programs, and treatment recommendations. Finally, the author proposed a …

Closing The English Language Proficiency Gap In Post-Secondary Education In Canada, Priscilla Lothian-Hendrix
Dissertations
The proposed research employed a mixed-method approach to investigate why the linguistic standards of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) (levels 5–8) are deemed satisfactory for English as a second language (ESL) learners at the college level. An examination of the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) identified why an ESL learner with a CLB level of 5–8 requires English support services in post-secondary education to achieve academic success in Canada. The CLB levels of six female participants were analyzed using a questionnaire in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to explore their English levels in articulating the language, pronouncing words, …

Implementation research is “the scientific study of methods to promote the systematic uptake of research findings and other evidence-based practices into routine practice, and, hence, to improve the quality and effectiveness” of programs (Eccles & Mittman, 2006). Most implementation science is based on principles of implementing a program’s activities with fidelity; however, the implementation fidelity framework and resources can also be utilized to develop tools and a process to evaluate CBAfunded programs’ adherence to common definitions and data entry practices. The quality of the Evidence-based Nebraska juvenile justice program evaluations rely on the assumption that program staff are …

Children As Mischievous Spirits: Legitimizing Child Cruelty And Filicide In Contemporary Africa, Chima Agazue
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The belief that certain humans are spiritual entities and the belief that some people are spiritually possessed can be found across histories and cultures. While these individuals are not always viewed in the negative or treated inhumanely, cases abound whereby degrading and inhumane treatments are meted out to some of them. In the African continent, certain groups of people, particularly children are linked to certain mischievous spirits due to their unusual appearance, aberrant behavior, disability, chronic illness, psychopathology or exceptional ability. Some are also suspected and consequently mistreated due to events surrounding their birth. Such children are known by different …

Yo Sí Participo: Latinx Parental Involvement In Education In The U.S. Despite Structural Barriers And Cultural Misperceptions, Elizabeth Vargas
Anthropology, Sociology, & Social Work Undergraduate Honors Theses
Latinx immigrants are the fastest-growing minority in the United States. Yet research shows that these immigrants and their American-born children are less likely to obtain a post-secondary education. Further, research suggests that lack of Latinx parental involvement in education is a significant factor contributing to the low educational attainment for these students. However, Latinx parents face barriers that limit their participation in schools, and their efforts to support their children's education often go unseen. This qualitative study explores the experiences of parental involvement in schools among Latinx parents. Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted with five Latinx mothers. Results suggest that …

Crazy Tubby Girl/Mad Fat Transman: Troubling And Reclaiming Schizophrenia Through Women Of Color Feminism And Madness Studies, Tyler Allen Selsor
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Through autobioethnography this project demonstrates a complex, yet incomplete picture of schizophrenia as an illness mediated by and through racist ableist (trans)misogynistic queerphobic capitalist heteropatriarchy. It describes the beginnings of schizophrenia as genetically inherited, yet entirely socially mediated process where subjects come to know themselves as pariahs through the processes of criminalization, incarceration and poor healthcare. Furthermore, it questions the project of wellness and contests schizophrenia as a site of wholly illness. It uses the disciplines of Madness Studies and Women of Color Feminism to argue that schizophrenia is a way of being that upsets patriarchy, so it must be …

Bpbl (Blended Problem-Based Learning) On Extraction And Chromatography Materials Using Coffee Topics To Measure Student Learning Outcomes And Soft Skills, Yismia Ikha Sari, Irma Kartika Kusumaningrum, Surjani Wonorahardjo
Jurnal Pendidikan Sains
This research and development study of BPBL (Blended Problem-Based Learning) teaching materials aimed to measure their effectiveness on students’ learning outcomes in extraction and chromatography courses, as well as on students’ soft skills. Based on a preliminary questionnaire regarding the need for developing BPBL teaching materials, students reported difficulties in understanding the concepts of extraction and chromatography, resulting in learning outcomes that did not meet the required standards. Students also recognized that improving soft skills is important for personal development, social participation, and success in the workplace. BPBL teaching materials combine blended learning and problem-based learning approaches. The use of …

This study examined the rates and correlates of first and repeat births in a national sample of females emancipating from foster care in the United States (N = 3,699). Data from the National Youth in Transition Database and the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System were used to evaluate birth rates between ages 19 and 21, and explore the risk, protective, and child welfare factors associated with first and repeat births. Findings revealed that about 30% of females in the current sample had given birth between ages 19 and 21. Of these females, about one-third had at least …

Citizen-Led Assessments: A Model For Evidence-Based Advocacy And Action To Improve Learning, Suman Bhattacharjea, Sehar Saeed, Rajib Timalsina, Syeed Ahamed
Assessment and Reporting
Designed as household-based assessments, citizen-led assessments (CLAs) are implemented by local organizations who assess children in their homes, thus reaching the most marginalized children, families, and communities, often in remote areas. CLAs add an essential piece of information for truly monitoring progress and help realistically represent the learning levels of all children – at national, regional, and global levels. By using simple tools and easy-to-understand reports, CLAs engage parents and community members in discussions about learning and help foster understanding of the importance of ensuring quality education through civil action. In this publication, members from organizations conducting CLAs in India, …

For my senior project, I wrote a grant proposal on behalf of the Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo (CAPSLO). The proposal was to be submitted to the Miossi Charitable Trust, and funds secured would have been used to complete the construction of a medically assisted residential in-patient detox facility on CAPSLO’s 40 Prado campus. The detox facility, which is currently under construction, will provide treatment for individuals who struggle with substance abuse disorders, and will specifically provide treatment for those facing opioid addictions. Most importantly, the facility is specifically available for low-income and unhoused individuals of San Luis …

Web Of Incarceration: School-Based Probation, Jyoti Nanda
Nevada Law Journal
Close to three quarters of a million cases flow through the United States’ juvenile justice system annually. Juvenile probation is the most commonly utilized form of sentencing, yet juvenile probation has not been the focus of sustained research or analysis. This Article focuses on School-Based Probation, a type of juvenile probation program that was created to enroll youth before a criminal charge has been filed. Described by its proponents as a ‘voluntarily probation’ program, pre-delinquent, or ‘at-risk,’ youth are identified by on-site school probation officers and enrolled in a supervised program. Deemed to be problematic by many jurisdictions, this Article …

The Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria is responsible for the highest number of lives lost in Africa in the past decade. The country has witnessed significant violations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Nigeria has signed and ratified. For instance, Nigeria had the second-highest number of children recruited to armed groups and the third-highest number of abductions in 2018. Current humanitarian efforts primarily target camps for internally displaced persons, while state strategies focus mainly on addressing security through combatant-targeted interventions. However, there is a need for more rights-based, integrated, and multifaceted approaches to …

The essential package of palliative care for cervical cancer (EPPCCC), described elsewhere, is designed to be safe and effective for preventing and relieving most suffering associated with cervical cancer and universally accessible. However, it appears that women with cervical cancer, more frequently than patients with other cancers, experience various types of suffering that are refractory to basic palliative care such as what can be provided with the EPPCCC. In particular, relief of refractory pain, vomiting because of bowel obstruction, bleeding, and psychosocial suffering may require additional expertise, medicines, or equipment. Therefore, we convened a group of experienced experts in all …

Walking The Talk In Participatory Philanthropy, Megan Meyer, Emily Smith Goering, Karen Hopkins, Cheryl Hyde, Nicole Mattocks, Jonalyn Denlinger
The Foundation Review
The philanthropic sector has been called on to increase community engagement and beneficiary voice in funding decisions — in other words, to democratize philanthropy — and foundations have responded with a variety of innovative grantmaking models. One of those, participatory grantmaking, comprises practices that range from soliciting feedback from constituents to encouraging their active participation in or control over grantmaking decisions, program implementation, and outcome evaluation. Little research, however, has examined the perceptions of foundation or community stakeholders involved in participatory grantmaking initiatives.
This article examines the participatory grantmaking process of a Baltimore, Maryland, community foundation that invested $1.5 million …

Contemporary Human Displacement: A Comparative Analysis Of Syria, Yemen, Honduras, And Venezuela, Rav Carlotti
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
What is causing the surge in human displacement around the world? Large-scale displacement in Syria, Yemen, Honduras, and Venezuela has generated unprecedented humanitarian crises in Latin America and the Middle East as millions of displaced people end up as refugees or immigrants. Humanitarian organizations like the UNHCR and host countries have had their resources overextended by these ongoing crises, and there is no end in sight. This thesis shows that contemporary human displacement is rooted in the increasing inability of governments to manage their societies amid great political demands and socio-economics strains. These causes are difficult to tackle because they …
