Additional Janus Parallels In The Book Of Mormon, Paul Y. Hoskisson Jan 2021

Additional Janus Parallels In The Book Of Mormon, Paul Y. Hoskisson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

A little more than 40 years ago, Cyrus Gordon discovered and described for the first time an ancient literary technique which he had found in the Hebrew Bible, and he gave it a name — a Janus parallel. That is why no one, more than 40 years ago, could have faked a Hebrew Janus parallel in an English translation of an ancient document. But, as I reasoned, if Janus parallels were a Hebrew literary device at the time Lehi left Jerusalem (for an analog see chiasmus), then such parallels probably can be found in the Book of Mormon. In this …

The People Of Canaan: A New Reading Of Moses 7, Adam Stokes Jan 2021

The People Of Canaan: A New Reading Of Moses 7, Adam Stokes

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Moses 7 is one of the most famous passages in all of Restoration scripture. It is also one of the most problematic in regard to its description of the people of Canaan as black (v. 8) and as a people who were not preached to by the patriarch Enoch (v. 12). Later there is also a mention of “the seed of Cain,” who also are said to be black (v. 22). This article examines the history of interpretation of Moses 7 and proposes an alternative understanding based on a close reading of the text. In contrast to traditional views, it …

An Ishmael Buried Near Nahom, Neal Rappleye Jan 2021

An Ishmael Buried Near Nahom, Neal Rappleye

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Latter-day Saint scholars generally agree that “the place called… Nahom,” where Ishmael was buried (1 Nephi 16:34) is identified as the Nihm tribal region in Yemen. Significantly, a funerary stela with the name ys1mʿʾl — the South Arabian equivalent of Ishmael — was found near the Nihm region and dated to ca. 6th century bc. Although it cannot be determined with certainty that this is the Ishmael from the Book of Mormon, circumstantial evidence suggests that such is a possibility worth considering.

From Illicit Cults To Superstition: Regulating Women’S Spiritual Activities Since The Late Qing Dynasty, Polly Robinson-Valenza Jan 2021

From Illicit Cults To Superstition: Regulating Women’S Spiritual Activities Since The Late Qing Dynasty, Polly Robinson-Valenza

Theses & ETDs

In China, women have long been engaged with praying, burning incense, and taking part in various temple celebrations and activities. As a result, China’s elites have consistently criticized women for their spirituality and attempted to control women by banning them from visiting temples. Despite the abundance of works in gender and religion in Chinese studies, many scholars have not sufficiently highlighted the intersection between these two fields. This thesis aims to fill this gap by analyzing the gendered motives behind temple bans in China since the late Qing dynasty. Moving chronologically from the late Qing period, to contemporary China, it …

Religion In The Orville : The Dangers Religion Poses To Modern Society As Reflected In Seth Macfarlane’S The Orville, Cassandra Parvaz Jan 2021

Religion In The Orville : The Dangers Religion Poses To Modern Society As Reflected In Seth Macfarlane’S The Orville, Cassandra Parvaz

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines how the science fiction show T he Orville showcases the dangers of religion in contemporary society. Created by Seth MacFarlane, T he Orville is a science fiction television show which is often thought of as a parody of S tar Trek which is better than the original. The Star Trek franchise has featured many episodes which cast religion in a negative light; T he Orville follows in S tar Trek’ s footsteps. The anti-religious sentiments in T he Orville are even more evident since Seth MacFarlane himself is a devout atheist who disparaged religion in his earlier …

Concerning A Manuscript From A Moravian Immigrant’S Trunk: Postil By Johann Spangenberg (1557), Hana Waisserova

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

In Nebraska, a family of Czech ancestry possesses a precious and unusual family artifact—an antique early-modern book, which was passed down in the family from generation to generation as their most precious treasure, a book that is much older than most carefully investigated family genealogies. The book has neat calligraphy and prints, leather binding, and comprises more than a thousand pages, though the first batch of pages is missing. The inside of the cover bears a pencil-written date: 1542. There are no title pages, no forewords, and no introductory chapter(s). The family lore tells that they kept it hidden in …

The Reception Of Hagar In The Writings Of Origen, John Chrysostom, And Augustine, Mariah Case Jan 2021

The Reception Of Hagar In The Writings Of Origen, John Chrysostom, And Augustine, Mariah Case

MA in Religion Theses

The premise of this thesis is to explore the reception of the Hagar stories through three prominent early Christian thinkers -Origen, John Chrysostom, and Augustine of Hippo - in order to evaluate the theological significance she had for those particular contexts. Hagar functions predominately as a symbol in contexts where group identity, power, and ideology are contested. The hermeneutical and theological stances of the authors are examined to expose and mitigate the religious conflict occurring in their historical location. The resulting interpretations of Hagar and her story vary from Christianization of the character to outright scorn and rejection of the …

Experiencing The Shock Of Mark 13, Jeremiah Jordan Hamby Jan 2021

Experiencing The Shock Of Mark 13, Jeremiah Jordan Hamby

MA in Religion Theses

The Gospel of Mark is a narrative text, a piece of literature, a story. In this narrative, the apocalyptic rule of God, Jesus, and other literary elements of the narrative then come together in a particular way within Mark 13 to shock the readers. Readers progress through the narrative and are shaped by various aspects of it along the way. The primary goal of this thesis is to look at Mark 13 and how narrative elements come together to evoke a particular experience in readers. Readers and stories meet at places where their horizons, their vantage points, converge. Narrative experiences …

Phenomenology Of Death: The Religious Dimension In The Ethical Thought Of Emmanuel Levinas, Changhyun Kim Jan 2021

Phenomenology Of Death: The Religious Dimension In The Ethical Thought Of Emmanuel Levinas, Changhyun Kim

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores Levinas’s phenomenology of death in order to unveil the religious dimension in his ethical thought through examining the political moment of the third party. I argue that death is neither a pure phenomenon transparently intelligible in the noema-noesis structure of intentionality nor a mere non-phenomenon totally irrelevant to the phenomenological investigation. Rather, death is a para-phenomenon whose unfathomable feature calls into question Levinas’s two important philosophical precedents: 1) Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology, in a methodological sense, and 2) Heidegger’s ontological interpretation of death, in a thematical sense. On the one hand, Levinas faces in the para-phenomenality of death …

The Awakening Of Islamic Pop Music, Jonas Otterbeck Jan 2021

The Awakening Of Islamic Pop Music, Jonas Otterbeck

Music & Performance in Muslim Contexts

Awakening – an Islamic media company formed in London – has created the soundtrack to many Muslim lives during the last two decades. It has produced three superstars (Sami Yusuf, Maher Zain and Harris J.) among a host of other artists. As the company celebrates their first 20 years in the industry, Jonas Otterbeck examines their remarkable rise to success and their established reputation as one of the most important global enterprises producing pop music inspired by Islam.

Otterbeck thoroughly describes the history and development of new Islamic popular music genres, in particular pop-nashid and Islamic pop, for the first …

What In Hell Conflicts With God? The Divine Promulgation View Of Hell Confirms The Reality Of Hell Does Not Make God A Moral Monster, Kara Y. Harris Jan 2021

What In Hell Conflicts With God? The Divine Promulgation View Of Hell Confirms The Reality Of Hell Does Not Make God A Moral Monster, Kara Y. Harris

Masters Theses

The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate that God is not morally at fault for humans consigned to eternal punishment in hell. In this work, I contribute to the ongoing conversation of hell in the following ways: (1) I provide an exposition on the words translated as hell in the Bible; (2) I uncover the progressive nature of the doctrine of hell as sin increases and God advances His plan of salvation to rescue humans from such an eternal fate; (3) I argue that Christianity and the biblical doctrine of hell are bound principally as Christ’s work on the …

Animating Plastics: Shinto And Environmentalism In Sayaka Ganz’S Reclaimed Creations, Erin Inouye Jan 2021

Animating Plastics: Shinto And Environmentalism In Sayaka Ganz’S Reclaimed Creations, Erin Inouye

Oswald Research and Creativity Competition

Sculpture artist Sayaka Ganz uses found plastic objects to create intricate recreations of nature. From the pair of horses in Emergence II to the monumental whale Nanami, Ganz’s work breathes new life into discarded plastic materials that would otherwise lay dormant in landfills and trash cans. Ganz herself attributes her attraction to working with alternative sculptural materials to the emphasis on Shinto animist beliefs engrained in her throughout her upbringing.

This presentation will explore the ways in which Sayaka Ganz’s Reclaimed Creations series demonstrate Aike P. Rots’s theory of the Shinto Environmentalist Paradigm which asserts that the “animistic” beliefs …

Spirit Of The Corporation, Russell Powell Jan 2021

Spirit Of The Corporation, Russell Powell

Seattle University Law Review

Christian theologians have analyzed the productive and destructive qualities of institutions, sometimes attributing to them human virtues and vices. In City of God, Saint Augustine describes a utopian vision of human community within a Christian context as an alternative to the flawed “City of Man.” Contemporary theologians and sociologists have described collective structures of human behavior in institutions as having a kind of “spirit” analogous to the individual human “spirit.” Institutions are then assumed to take on an existence separate from the individuals within them, and in fact, the “spirit” of an institution influences the behavior of individuals. In The …

Spirit Of The Corporation, Russell Powell Jan 2021

Spirit Of The Corporation, Russell Powell

Seattle University Law Review

This Article provides a contemporary theoretical framework for Berle’s insight as a basis for considering its legal and ethical implications for corporate governance. Part II attempts to unpack contemporary understandings of spirit in order to provide a helpful working definition. Part III considers the origins and essential traits of the modern business corporation in the United States. The question posed by Berle—whether corporations can or ought to have a sort of moral orientation—is discussed in Part IV, while Part V ponders potential policy shifts that might tilt the orientation of the “spirit of the corporation” toward the common good. Part …

Performing Multiculturalism: Ukrainian-Canadian Identities In Transnational Politics Of Recognition, Olga Glinskii Jan 2021

Performing Multiculturalism: Ukrainian-Canadian Identities In Transnational Politics Of Recognition, Olga Glinskii

Anthropology ETDs

As a result of specific aspects of history, including historically complex diasporas, contemporary Ukrainian identities -- both socially normative and personal -- are subject to a transnational politics of recognition. Whereas Charles Taylor has done more than any other scholar to highlight obligatory and unavoidable character of the politics of identity today, his univocal approach to the relations among language, culture, and identity is inadequate for illuminating the Ukrainian situation. In this dissertation I show that Ukrainians of different sorts employ situational strategies for mobilizing a set of perspectively valid --though not always logically consistent -- historically based ontologies. I …
