Is God Responsible For Sin?, John Wesley Holmes
Is God Responsible For Sin?, John Wesley Holmes
Masters Theses
Does sin actually exist without the presence of divine commands? Without a rule can there be a violation? If sin results from violating a divine command, then the assignment of responsibility must fall on the one issuing the commands. However, if God is responsible for sin, then the core of Christianity must be questioned. This thesis confronts the accusation that God is responsible for sin by establishing commands that are foreknown to be violated. This paper will demonstrate that God is not responsible for sin and show humanity to be accountable for individual choices. Demonstrating human responsibility for sin will …
Psychedelic Drugs And Atheism: Debunking The Myths, Wayne Glausser
Psychedelic Drugs And Atheism: Debunking The Myths, Wayne Glausser
English Faculty publications
Two recent surveys of people who took psychedelic drugs and reported “God experience encounters”, along with successful clinical trials using psychedelic therapy for depression, have given rise to public misconceptions about psychedelics and atheism. Specifically, three inferences have been drawn: (1) that the psychedelic experience tends to dissolve atheist convictions; (2) that atheist convictions, once dissolved, are replaced with traditional monotheist beliefs; and (3) that atheism and depression somehow correlate as afflictions for which psychedelic drugs offer relief. This paper argues, based on analysis of the studies and trials along with relevant supplemental evidence, that each of these popular inferences …
Perceptions Of Multilingual Employees In The Workplace, Sydney Marie Milian
Perceptions Of Multilingual Employees In The Workplace, Sydney Marie Milian
All Theses
As the workplace becomes further diversified, it is important to understand how foreign language skills are treated in relation to other skills and the factors that influence this such as how the language was learned. Although there are efforts to further understand the experiences of multilingual and multicultural employees, much of the existing work is designed to examine the experiences of these employees but not the perceptions of others around them related to their job-relevant skill sets. This study sample was comprised of 474 participants from US Amazon’s Mechanical Turk workers, aged 22–74. Independent variables of level of organizational citizenship …
Pentecostalism: A Comparative Study Of African And African American Churches In Springfield, Emmanuel Kumah
Pentecostalism: A Comparative Study Of African And African American Churches In Springfield, Emmanuel Kumah
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis is a comparative ethnography of two forms of black Pentecostalism, an African American congregation and an African immigrant congregation. The goal of this project is to show the similarities and differences between these Pentecostal groups. By observing members and interviewing them about worship practices, glossolalic utterances, and gender, the project reveals that although these two groups historically have a common root, there are both real parallels and differences between them because they developed independently from each other. This fieldwork at the African American Deliverance Temple Ministries and the African immigrant Redeemed Christian Church of God revealed that women …
Inclusivity In Practice: A Queer Examination Of The Acceptance Of Trans Communities From The Standpoints Of Trans University Students, Sean Maulding
Inclusivity In Practice: A Queer Examination Of The Acceptance Of Trans Communities From The Standpoints Of Trans University Students, Sean Maulding
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Despite attending the same universities and working toward the same degrees, trans students and cisgender students do not always have the same experiences during their college years. In addition to the hardships associated with being a university student, members of trans communities often also face gender-based discrimination and challenges that their cisgender counterparts do not. Although the mid-size Southern California university at which this research took place has taken steps toward fostering an accepting climate for all students, the transmale, gender nonconforming, and gender nonbinary students who participated in this study continue to experience a layer of rejection due to …

Blessed Are The Poor (In Spirit): Wealth And Poverty In The Writings Of The Greek Christian Fathers Of The Second Century, Jacob D. Hayden
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This paper examines how Greek Christian authors engaged with the topics of poverty and wealth during the second and third centuries CE - a period of major transition for the Christian Church. Beginning with the latest documents in the Greek New Testament (c. 90 - 120), this study traces these themes through the works of the Apostolic Fathers, including Clement of Rome (c. 35 - 99), Ignatius of Antioch (c. 34 - 108), and Polycarp of Smyrna (c. 69 - 155). It then addresses to the apologetic authors Justin Martyr (c. 100 - 165) and Irenaeus (c. 130 - 202). …

"There Was One Samuel": Possible Multiple Sources For The Samuel Narrative, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap

During the second day of Christ’s ministry to the New World, a curious event took place. Having taught and commented on a number of biblical texts, Christ then had Nephi3 present his own record for review.1 The inspection uncovered a missing event that Christ brought to the attention of the gathered disciples: “Verily I say unto you, I commanded my servant Samuel, the Lamanite, that he should testify unto this people, that at the day that the Father should glorify his name in me that there were many saints who should arise from the dead, and should appear unto many, …

The Śhiva-Buddhist Concept In The Temple Of Singhasari-Majapahit Periods, Deny Yudo Wahyudi, Agus Aris Munandar, Turita Indah Setyani
International Review of Humanities Studies
Religious tolerance, which is now starting to fade, has grown since the past. The Śhiva and Buddhist religious coalition from the Singhasari era to Majapahit might represent its religious tolerance. Several temples, consisting of Jawi, Jago, Panataran and Jabung, seem to reflect the concept of Śhiva-Buddhist. Its Śhiva-Buddhist characteristics could be referred from the textual information, its architecture, and its relief. This study used the analytical method and a historical-archaeology approach. The descriptions of these elements were identified and analyzed to strengthen the opinion of the Śhiva-Buddhist coalition. This study found that the Śhiva-Buddhist concept, as reflected in the Jawi, …

Knowledge, Attitude, And Practice Regarding Covid-19 Among Residents Of Pesantren, Milla Herdayati, Juliana Karniastuti
Kesmas
Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) run the risk of COVID-19 transmission. The pesantren learning system is generally carried out collectively, with an all-day-long interaction between teachers and students. This paper presented a lesson on controlling COVID-19 outbreak in pesantren through Community Service Activities (CSA). The CSA was designed to empower the pesantren to prevent and control COVID-19 to become a safe place protected from COVID-19 spread. This was a relevant case study in a traditional Islamic boarding school (salafiah) in Lebak District, Banten. The study population (a total of 97 participants) consisted of the pesantren leader, the teachers (“Ustaz/Ustazah”) , and …
Buddhist Perspectives On Pluralism And Public Sphere, Jesada Buaban
Buddhist Perspectives On Pluralism And Public Sphere, Jesada Buaban
International Review of Humanities Studies
This paper examines the concept of pluralism in Theravada tradition. Its main purpose is to discuss an idea proposed by Pinit Ratanakul, who tends to portray Buddhism as an inclusive religion, while this paper argues that such an inclusivism of Buddhism has limitations. In contrast, Buddhism also reflects some senses of exclusivism in order to confirm its truth claim. This aspect is always overlooked because scholars seem to interpret their religions to promote the trend of world peace but in a narrow way, until various parts of the scriptures have been ignored. Methodologically, textual analysis has been applied in this …

Freedom Of Speech At Ursinus College, Benjamin Henwood
Business and Economics Summer Fellows
Freedom of speech is a hot topic issue on many college campuses across the United States. My research project’s goal is to find out how our community at Ursinus College feels about freedom of speech. My project is going to explore how well Ursinus holds itself to its standards of free and open inquiry and how the students on campus feel about free and open inquiry. In order to understand how the community feels about free speech on our campus, we borrowed a survey from the Foundation of Individual Rights in Education and distributed it to roughly half of the …

Tourists, Pilgrims And Cultural Routes: The Case Of The Kumano Kodo Route In Japan, Polyxeni Moira, Dimitrios Mylonopoulos, Georgia Konstantinou
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Cultural Routes are one of the most important tools for the promotion and the interpretation of cultural heritage. They are itineraries designed around a core theme and they include, inter alia, monuments of archaeological or historical interest, architectural monuments, industrial heritage buildings, religious heritage edifices, traditional settlements, spiritual places. In Japan, one of the most important routes, in Kii Mountain Range, is the Kumano Kodo religious-cultural route. The route reflects the merging of the ancient worship of nature – which is believed to be inhabited by Gods or spirits - Shintoism and Buddhism. The route, due to its great importance, …

Sharing Hearts: Buddhist Charity And Urbanization In Vietnam, Sara Ann Swenson
Sharing Hearts: Buddhist Charity And Urbanization In Vietnam, Sara Ann Swenson
Dissertations - ALL
My dissertation analyzes how and why volunteers joined or established grassroots Buddhist charities in Ho Chi Minh City. I spoke with approximately 400 members of 25 charities, focusing on seven main groups that shared an overlapping network of volunteers. My research includes perspectives from demographic groups often excluded from positions of authority in institutionalized Buddhism and, in turn, Buddhist studies scholarship, such as low-income day laborers, elderly women, Buddhist nuns at peri-urban temples, and a lay community of queer "same-gender-loving" [đồng tính] men. Despite their marginalization from formal leadership in Vietnam's state-managed National Buddhist Sangha, volunteers claimed social and moral …
