Tenants Without Rights: Immigrants’ Experiences In The U.S. Low-Income Housing Market, Mekonnen Firew Ayano
Tenants Without Rights: Immigrants’ Experiences In The U.S. Low-Income Housing Market, Mekonnen Firew Ayano
Journal Articles
Immigrants who recently arrived in the United States generally are not able to exclusively possess rental properties in the formal market because they lack a steady source of income and credit history. Instead, they rent shared bedrooms, basements, attics, garages, and illegally converted units that violate housing codes and regulations. Their situations highlight the disconnect between tenant rights law and the deleterious conditions of informal residential tenancies. Tenant rights law confers a variety of rights and remedies to a residential tenant if the renter has exclusive possession of the premises. If the renter lacks exclusive possession, courts typically characterize the …
Conspiracy Theories And Social Media: How Online Disinformation Poses A Formidable Threat To The Livelihood Of Contemporary Civilization, Jessica D'Amico
Conspiracy Theories And Social Media: How Online Disinformation Poses A Formidable Threat To The Livelihood Of Contemporary Civilization, Jessica D'Amico
3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing
Overview: In our current, heavily-modernized society, the Internet and Internet-focused technologies have completely redefined our standard means of communication and have become fully integrated into every aspect of our daily lives. More specifically, the rise of social media platforms has revolutionized the ways by which we spread and interpret information and has allowed people all across the globe the opportunity to make their voices heard. However, these social platforms are anything but flawless systems of communication; in the few years that they have been prominent within society, they have presented our civilization with tumultuous challenges that have severely threatened our …

3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing
Overview: Marge Piercy’s novel, Woman on the Edge of Time, takes a dive into the perspective of a mentally ill woman who experiences time travel to a utopian future. Specifically, the novel follows Connie, the protagonist, through her torturous life in a mental ward. She struggles to find any enjoyment in her quarantined life, finding stimulation only through visits from her friends and family. Furthermore, she struggles as a person of color living in poverty. These conditions only lead her mental state to worsen. Her solution for her perpetual agony and looming mental problems is her frequent trips to a …
Medical Injustices: Young Adult Literature Brings Them To Light, Korinne Minton
Medical Injustices: Young Adult Literature Brings Them To Light, Korinne Minton
3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing
Overview:
The term, “young adult” has a very loose definition. Some say it is only teenagers. Some say it can reach up to thirty year olds. The official definition is, “A person in their teens or early twenties” (Google), but one thing that can be agreed upon is that this period of life is a very rough one. People are just figuring out who they are, what they like to do, who they like and who they don’t like, who they can trust and who to not turn your back to. But most importantly, it is a period of growth …
The Patriarchy Gives Way To Irish Mothers, Cora Hawn
The Patriarchy Gives Way To Irish Mothers, Cora Hawn
3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing
Overview: In Ireland, both the patriarchy and the strong mothers seem to be timeless, but they exist in a delicate balance to one another. The Irish mothers who presented as a strong constant have always been capable of overtaking the patriarchy, yet the patriarchy has been a burden on Irish mothers for much of the nation’s history. The beautiful irony is that this patriarchy, a society where men are granted an inequitable amount of control, is slowly falling victim to the persistent Irish mothers, as fathers continue to fail their children and leave mothers with no choice but to take …
The Doctrine Of Implied Honesty In Contract: Is Neither A Slippery Slope Nor A "New Vista" Of Contract Nullification That Should Concern Businesses Or Franchisors, John J. Jacko Iii
The Doctrine Of Implied Honesty In Contract: Is Neither A Slippery Slope Nor A "New Vista" Of Contract Nullification That Should Concern Businesses Or Franchisors, John J. Jacko Iii
Emory Business Law Review
In the fourteen years since the New York Law Journal published Franchising: LJL Transportation, Contract Nullification by Franchisor, the sky has not fallen nor has the concept of honesty in contract slipped down any slope that threatens contract law generally or franchise systems, specifically. Time has proven the critic, the criticism, and any consternation for the franchise termination opinion in LJL Transportation, Inc. v. Pilot Air Freight Corp. and the implied honesty in contract doctrine to be wrong. One franchise contracts treatise embraces and cites the LJL case for the proposition that “[h]iding revenue from the franchisor in order to …
Electric Vehicle Limbo: The Need For Charging Incentives, Shahil Patel
Electric Vehicle Limbo: The Need For Charging Incentives, Shahil Patel
Emory Business Law Review
A study published by AAA in 2018 shows, “20 percent or 50 million Americans, will likely go electric for their next vehicle purchase.” This means that 1/5 Americans plan on moving on from their previous gasoline car to an electric vehicle. Fast forward to 2021, electric vehicle technology has vastly improved in the battery, range, and charging spheres which further popularizes this movement. It is evident that companies have taken note, as announcements of new electric vehicles coming to the market keeps increasing. There are many reasons for this shift and electric vehicles are set to become the future. However, …
How The Black Lives Matter Movement Enhanced Corporate Governance In 2020, Blair Johnson
How The Black Lives Matter Movement Enhanced Corporate Governance In 2020, Blair Johnson
Emory Business Law Review
The year 2020 brought the United States’ ongoing issues of racial injustice and police brutality to the forefront. With the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and countless other people of color, the Black Lives Matter movement has focused on uprooting and dismantling systemic racism in the United States. During what may be “the largest movement in U.S. history,” individuals and organizations are asking themselves what actions they can take to combat systemic racism in the country. Many corporations have chosen to speak out and use their platform to raise awareness of the issues of racism in the …
Cyber Conflicts In Outer Space: Lessons From Scada Cybersecurity, Roy Balleste
Cyber Conflicts In Outer Space: Lessons From Scada Cybersecurity, Roy Balleste
Emory Business Law Review
The story of cybersecurity begins in land. By land, a cyber operations expert would mean the land mass on the surface of the Earth. The great monuments to human achievement surround our daily lives, every hour of every day. These testaments to human ingenuity are not the usual ones known to be appreciated as works of art. The monuments of concern for cybersecurity include, among others, power plants, electrical substations, water dams, water processing plants, auto assembly factories, and satellite ground stations. On January 10, 2014, Australia’s IT News reported that Russian researchers Sergey Gordeychik and Gleb Gritsai discovered vulnerabilities …

Variations In Anterior Segment Vasculature Of The Eye And Their Implication In Strabismus Surgery And Other Surgical Procedures, Adam L. Lewis, Clayton Marolt, M. Scott Draper, Victoria Gordon, Kenneth S. Johnson, Joanna Rowe, Kanwalgeet Hans, Steven M. Silverstein, Anthony Olinger
Faculty and Staff Publications
Objective:
Anterior segment ischemia (ASI) is a serious complication of strabismus surgery and other ocular procedures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate variation of the long posterior artery (LPCA). These variations may predispose patients to anterior segment ischemia following strabismus surgery, and proper mapping may provide surgical “danger zones” for other invasive ocular procedures.
Subjects:
A total of 100 preserved cadaveric eyeballs from University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), Creighton University, and Kansas City University (KCU) were utilized for this study.
Methods:
LPCAs were identified, isolated, and counted prior to removal of the choroid. Two distances were measured …
The Influence Of Religious Belief On Burnout In Medical Students, Megan Haghnegahdar, Palash Sharma, Kevin P. Hubbard, W. Abraham White
The Influence Of Religious Belief On Burnout In Medical Students, Megan Haghnegahdar, Palash Sharma, Kevin P. Hubbard, W. Abraham White
Faculty and Staff Publications
Objective: Approximately half of all U.S. medical students are experiencing burnout. A previous study has demonstrated that higher levels of spirituality are associated with less burnout in medical students, yet no studies have examined the relationship between religious affiliation and burnout in medical students. The purpose of this study is to determine if specific religious affiliation and level of religious involvement is associated with less burnout in medical students.
Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was sent to all students attending five different osteopathic and allopathic medical schools in Kansas and Missouri. It contained a validated burnout measure, an item to …
To Take A Knee, Jay Henley
To Take A Knee, Jay Henley
3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing
Overview: Years ago, when slavery was legal, African Americans were viewed by many as less than human and were treated as such because of the color of their skin. James Wilson and Roger Sherman, delegates for the Constitutional Convention of 1787, even proposed an agreement that determined that each slave would only represent three-fifths of a man when determining state representation in Congress (Finkelman 2013). The Emancipation for African Americans was the key to a promised land of true freedom, but they were left disappointed because they were not actually granted the freedoms they hoped for. Today, even though slavery …

History, System, Principle, Analogy: Four Paradigms Of Legitimacy In European Law, Paul Linden-Retek
Journal Articles
The constitutional dimension of European Union law promises—in its most ambitious forms—reflexive structures of post-national democratic community. But this ambition poses profound philosophical challenges for how we think about the legitimacy of European judiciaries—the relation between legal decision-making and the ideal of post-national self-authorship. European constitutional law not only coordinates new forms of public power, but its jurisprudence also normatively justifies (or fails to justify) that power in what must be similarly reflexive discourses of legitimation. This article argues that theorists of European law have thus far paid too little attention to the thicker socio-cultural registers through which this legitimation occurs. …
