Apple Surface Defect Detection Method Based On Fusion Of Infrared And Visible Images, Wang Yun-Peng, Si Hai-Ping, Song Jia-Zhen, Wan Li
Food and Machinery
Objective: To solve the current situation of manual screening in most cases of Chinese apple classification. Methods: The infrared and visible image fusion algorithm based on multi-scale transformation was used to fuse the collected visible image and infrared image of the apple to obtain a more intuitive fusion image with defect characteristics, and performed image preprocessing operations on the image to obtain a binary value. The image data set was transformed, and then the AlexNet model of the convolutional neural network was used to train, verify and detect the previous Apple surface defect data set. Results: The detection method has …

The Calculating For An Adequate Systems Tool (Cast): A Low-Cost And Effective Tool To Improve A Community’S Substance Use Disorder Care Preparedness, Margarita Consing, Quinci Paine, Gabriela Balf
School of Medicine and Health Sciences Student Publications
Objective
In the context of an ongoing opioid crisis, the authors used The Calculating for an Adequate Systems Tool (CAST) to help quantify the rural community preparedness to care of people with substance use disorders (SUDs.)
Methods
CAST was developed by Green and associates in 2017. CAST uses demographics, social, and community indicators to produce a global risk score for hospitalization due to SUDs and highlights which SUD care system resource areas in the studied community are lacking or redundant. There are no human subjects involved; the majority of the required data for CAST is freely available on official national …
Peer Effects And Recidivism: The Role Of Race And Age, Kegon Teng Kok Tan, Mariyana Zapryanova
Peer Effects And Recidivism: The Role Of Race And Age, Kegon Teng Kok Tan, Mariyana Zapryanova
Economics: Faculty Publications
Recidivism rates are a growing concern due to the high cost of imprisonment and the high rate of ex-prisoners returning back to prison. One policy-relevant and potentially important determinant of recidivism is the composition of peer inmates. In this paper, we study the role of peer effects within a correctional facility using data on almost 80,000 individuals serving time in Georgia. We exploit randomness in peer-composition over time within prisons to identify effects of peers on recidivism rates. We find no evidence of peer effects for property or drug-related crimes in the general prison population. However, we find strong peer …

Trouble With Names: Commercial Speech And A New Approach To Food Product Label Regulation, William Cusack
Trouble With Names: Commercial Speech And A New Approach To Food Product Label Regulation, William Cusack
Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar
The Supreme Court has recognized First Amendment protection for “commercial speech” since 1975. Commercial speech doctrine seeks to balance advertiser interest in speech, consumer interest in information, and society’s interest that “economic decisions in the aggregate be intelligent and well-informed.” Regulations and compulsory disclosures of commercial speech play a part in ensuring consumers are well-informed. Yet, there continues to be consumer confusion surrounding the commercial speech doctrine’s application to food labeling. Lawmakers continue to pass regulations that are unnecessary or nonsensical. Regulators continue to enforce these regulations, even if the state interest in doing so is minimal or non-existent. There …

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
Performance assessments of teachers and/or teaching (TPA) are becoming part of the educational accountability landscape on an international scale. This article presents insight into the process three teacher educators have followed as their research evolves from a critical document analysis into a collaborative self-study of their programs and practices. The work is framed by critical race theory and guided by practices undertaken in becoming critically reflective educators. This piece represents the conversations and connections to research around the critical need for educators to examine bias-based assumptions and internalized deficit-thinking. The tools we have developed for our next steps into collaborative …

Concurrent Achilles Tendon Vibration And Tibial Nerve Stimulation To Estimate Persistent Inward Current Strength In Motoneurons, Denis César Leite Vieira, Amilton Vieira, Matheus Avelino Dos Santos, Rafael Rodrigues Da Cunha, Victor Lage, Anthony J. Blazevich, Martim Bottaro
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Vibratory (Tvib) and sustained (Tsust) torque responses to concurrent Achilles tendon vibration and neuromuscular electrical stimulation applied over the muscle belly (vib+stim) are used as indicators of motoneuron facilitation and, theoretically, persistent inward current strength. However, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) applied to the nerve trunk may potentiate motoneuronal excitability more than muscle belly NMES, yet it remains unclear whether NMES applied over the nerve evokes robust Tvib and Tsust responses when used during the vib+stim protocol. This study tested whether a nerve-targeted vib+stim protocol elicits Tvib and Tsust responses in the ankle plantar flexors with acceptable intra- and inter-session reliability. …

Walter Scott At 250, Alison Lumsden, Kirsty Archer-Thompson
Studies in Scottish Literature
This essay marking the 250th anniversary of Walter Scott's birth reflects on the current state of Scott studies, the scholarly directions in which it might develop, and ways in which the relevance of Scott’s work may be re-discovered and re-invigorated for contemporary audiences. In particular, it examines scholarly and critical attitudes to Scott's work over the past 50 years through papers given at the triennial international Scott conferences initiated in Edinburgh in 1971, alongside developments in public engagement at Abbotsford House and elsewhere during the 250th anniversary year.
Scott's Last Words, Peter Garside
Scott's Last Words, Peter Garside
Studies in Scottish Literature
Walter Scott’s dying words as recounted by J. G. Lockhart, widely accepted by in the Victorian period, have since been seen as largely fabricated. In 1938, H. J. C. Grierson blamed Lockahart’s “pious myth” on a “lady relative” of Scott’s anxious to deflect future detractors who might vilify Scott as irreligious. The concerened lady, unnamed by Grierson, was Mrs Harriet Scott of Harden, one of Scott’s first confidants, early adviser on literary matters, and later nearby neighbour at Mertoun House. Her positive influence on Scott, still underestimated, is hardly that of the “evangelical lady” featured regularly in post-Grierson Scott biographies. …
