Beyond "Bad" Cops: Historicizing And Resisting Surveillance Culture In Universities, Amy J. Wan, Lindsey Albracht Dec 2021

Beyond "Bad" Cops: Historicizing And Resisting Surveillance Culture In Universities, Amy J. Wan, Lindsey Albracht

Publications and Research

In this article, we define and examine surveillance culture within US college classrooms, a logical extension of pervasive carceral and capitalist logics that underlie the US educational system, in which individual success is tied to behavior monitoring, rule following, and sorting, particularly within marginalized student populations. Reflecting anxieties about the expansion of educational access, we argue for how crisis and change have historically contributed to the
urgency and opportunity to expand surveillance culture and consider why this has continued to happen as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. We offer suggestions and alternatives to surveillance culture that have helped us …

Stability Analysis Of Dc Microgrid With Constant Power Load, Sarah Ansari Dec 2021

Stability Analysis Of Dc Microgrid With Constant Power Load, Sarah Ansari

Theses and Dissertations

Development towards sustainability has led to an increase in the integration of various distributed generation (DG) units like renewable sources of energy, energy storage systems (ESS). In order to counteract the challenges, caused due to integration of DG units into conventional power systems, the concept of DC microgrid (DCMG) has been introduced. DCMGs have power converters that are present on the source side and load side of the DCMGs. The power converters at the load side when tightly regulated behave as constant power loads (CPLs). There are stability issues pertaining to the inherent non-linear characteristic of the ideal CPLs because …

Ceding Power In Intra-Household Bargaining In Times Of Economic Anxiety: An Experimental Study In Nepal, Margaret Boittin, Katrina Kosec, Cecilia Hyunjung Mo, Soosun You

All Papers

How do perceptions of one’s relative economic status affect beliefs regarding gender roles? We conducted a 2019 survey experiment with approximately 2,000 adults in Nepal. Employing an established survey treatment called a priming experiment to subtly alter half of respondents’ perceptions of their relative economic well-being, we find that increased feelings of relative deprivation make married women significantly less likely to support gender egalitarian perspectives. Women decrease their support for women making decisions over household expenditures, having equal control over household income, sharing household chores, and women working outside the home. A message randomly read to some women and designed …

Jurnal Konstitusi & Demokrasi

The right to vote is the characteristic of democracy, which is to elect representatives who make, amend, and repeal a law. Without that right, there is no form of transfer of power from people to the government. But in practice, there are restrictions on that right, that is limitation of the right to vote on active members of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). Type of legal research is normative juridical, comparison of law and legal history. The basis for this regulation of right to vote for members of TNI is maintaining the neutrality of TNI. While there are several forms …

Supervision For Advocacy: Supporting Self-Care, Kathleen J. Farkas, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk

Faculty Scholarship

The objective is to examine the intersection of advocacy for social change, the individual’s emotional costs of advocacy, and the use of trauma informed care in supervisory practice to encourage and support advocates and their work. Supervision models exist, but none address the needs of advocates who might become targets for scorn and persecution. The literature on trauma informed care provides a direction to improve the support and supervision of advocates, especially those who use their personal experiences as examples in their work. We reviewed data bases and relevant literature regarding supervision and the principles of trauma informed care. Periodical …

Struggle For Substantive Justice And Community Development: Transgender Subjects In Contemporary India, Pushpesh Kumar

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

This paper discusses the transgender community's fight for justice and developmental rights since 2014 and the response of the Indian Government toward this assertion. The point of choosing 2014 as the starting point is not because the fight for their justice actually begins in this year but because India witnessed an intensification and an increase in public visibility of transgenders’ mobilization following the recognition of members of transgender communities as legal citizens through the landmark Indian Supreme Court (Court) verdict called the National Legal Services Authority Union of India (NALSA). In documenting transgenders’ mobilization and the state's response, the author …

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

The children of today’s generation are considered as digital natives, which means that they have the capacity to navigate technological terrains to the best of their abilities and create online communities in new storyworlds. Minecraft and Roblox, two sandbox open-world mobile games, are manifestations of such ability to create worlds, survive in difficult gaming situations, face opponents in combat, and interact with players within a community. Even more so, such transmedia engagements allow the child participants, as evidenced in this study, to transact with players and the app itself to introduce new playstyle strategies that complement or subvert the gameplays …

Meaning-Making Dynamics Of Job Interview Performances, Jacquelyn K. Bertman Dec 2021

Meaning-Making Dynamics Of Job Interview Performances, Jacquelyn K. Bertman

Graduate Masters Theses

Behavioral interviewing has become a popular technique used across fields to assess the fitness of job seekers (Roulin & Bangerter, 2012; Powers, 2000). This particular style of interviewing calls on the interviewee to narrate their prior experiences in the workforce, with the idea that past behavior on the job is prelude to future job performance. The answers (stories) follow a specific format in order to be considered successful, one that adheres to the style and organization of the dominant Discourse (Gee, 1989). However, storytelling is a culturally situated practice and candidates from diverse backgrounds may construct their narratives outside of …

Acknowledgment Of Culture And Stereotypes: Black Participants’ Perceptions Of Specific Therapist Behaviors, Tsotso T. Ablorh Dec 2021

Acknowledgment Of Culture And Stereotypes: Black Participants’ Perceptions Of Specific Therapist Behaviors, Tsotso T. Ablorh

Graduate Masters Theses

Mental health disparities for Black people of diverse ethnicities compared to people of other racial identities has been well-documented (Alegría et al., 2008; Maura & Weisman de Mamani, 2017). Research addressing this pervasive systemic and interpersonal problem often focuses on client-related factors that create or intensify barriers to care. However clinician-related factors (i.e., racial identity, multicultural training, implicit biases, behavior, etc.) also have a significant impact on barriers to care, retention in therapy, and clinical outcomes for people of African descent (Larrison & Schoppelrey, 2011; Owen, Imel, Adelson, & Rodolfa, 2012). Researchers suggest that the favoring of historically white perspectives, …

Despite significant prominence, influence, and investment from the partners involved, public-private educational partnerships in Boston have been understudied. The intention of this dissertation was to bring an understanding of how this urban educational public-private partnership developed; the motivations of the partners to participate; the partner perceptions of the successes and challenges of the partnership; and the extent of the partnership's influence on the Boston Public Schools.

This case study utilized qualitative methods of document analysis and semi-structured interviews of partnership leaders …

Religious Coping After Natural Disaster: Predicting Long-Term Mental And Physical Health In Survivors Of Hurricane Katrina, Monica Arkin Dec 2021

Religious Coping After Natural Disaster: Predicting Long-Term Mental And Physical Health In Survivors Of Hurricane Katrina, Monica Arkin

Graduate Masters Theses

Natural disasters are increasing with regards to both frequency and severity (CRED & UNDRR, 2015; NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), 2020). Exposure to natural disasters, in turn, increases the likelihood for the development of adverse mental and physical health outcomes (Augustinavicius et al., 2021). Religion and spirituality is an accessible form of coping that many people turn to during and after natural disasters, and may be especially valuable to those who face barriers to accessing mental health treatment or may not feel served by formal mental health institutions (Abu-Raiya & Pargament, 2015; Bryant-Davis & Wong, 2013). However, there …

Archaeology Of Disease And Medicinal Practices In 18th-Century Boston, Massachusetts, Kaitlyn N. Ball

Graduate Masters Theses

This research explores the knowledge of medical techniques during the early 18th century in Boston, Massachusetts, a period of modernization and changing attitudes toward disease. By analyzing archaeoparasitological samples, written accounts, and artifacts associated with medicinal practices, I shed light on attempts to treat parasitic diseases encountered by those living in urban Boston. The collections I have selected to analyze are samples of urban Boston life and provide ideal contexts for parasite preservation. I analyze samples from the Parker-Emery household privy (c. 1720-1750) in the North End and compare them to samples from the early 18th-century Town Dock landfill in …

Critical Transformations Through Community Service-Learning Programs For Students Of Color At Predominantly White Institutions, Varsha Ghosh Dec 2021

Critical Transformations Through Community Service-Learning Programs For Students Of Color At Predominantly White Institutions, Varsha Ghosh

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Service-learning has become deeply embedded in higher education, as both a co-curricular and curricular tool to achieve learning outcomes, promote civic engagement and promote diversity. Yet it has also struggled with the critique that service-learning, unintentionally, reinforces deficit thinking by promoting a dominant narrative centered on the White middle-class perspective. This narrative excludes the experience of students and faculty who reflect the demographics of the community served or who are simultaneously from the community and the institution. This qualitative study seeks to challenge the traditional narrative to understand the service experience of students of color from low-income backgrounds at predominantly …

In the late 18th century, the abolition of slavery through manumission initiated a period of enormous change in the lives of people of African descent living on Nantucket, MA. Newly free, people of color living on the island immediately began to establish families and purchase property. At the end of the 1700s, they founded the community of New Guinea, located on the southwestern edge of the town of Nantucket. Though enslavement had been abolished and the whaling industry brought economic opportunity to Nantucket, the people of New Guinea continued to experience evolving forms of racial inequality, discrimination, and violence. To …
