Connect The Dots, Edward Mcdonough
Connect The Dots, Edward Mcdonough
Journal of Media Literacy Education
During the dawn of the Covid Pandemic our isolation was a depressant. As teachers we were struggling with how to teach, as the popular saying explains, in an environment “that was like building an airplane as we were learning how to fly it.” As a teacher in practice, Virtually Viral Hangouts became my antidepressant. This daily online community of educators gave me the skills to teach more effectively during the pandemic and beyond. The experience taught me how to seek and forge connections with students and cyber colleagues; how to carve out a cyber environment of psychological safety to …
Seeding Change: What Vvh Can Teach Us About Teaching And Learning In Digital Spaces, Michelle Ciccone
Seeding Change: What Vvh Can Teach Us About Teaching And Learning In Digital Spaces, Michelle Ciccone
Journal of Media Literacy Education
In this essay, I reflect on a central question: “why did I experience something so profoundly different in Virtually Viral Hangouts (VVH) than I was able to help seed in my own district during the COVID-19 crisis?” I identify three key components of the VVH ethos that inspired new ways of thinking, namely: digital technologies free us from constraints to build something different, digital technologies are most effective when we use them to build community, and digital collaboration enables us to tap into the wisdom of the group. As we build better and more humane educational spaces, it is important …
Using Gamification To Teach And Engage Students In The Act Of Summary Writing, Quang C. Ly
Using Gamification To Teach And Engage Students In The Act Of Summary Writing, Quang C. Ly
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This study uses the concept of gamification to engage first-year students in the act of summary writing. The researcher argues that writing instructors should consider ways to gamify concepts in their curriculum to bring novelty and active involvement to course materials. The researcher uses Robson et al.’s (2015) mechanics, dynamics, and emotions framework and Groh’s (2012) principles of relatedness, competence, and autonomy to explain and justify the integration of gamification to the summary genre. Of the typical gaming elements used in gamification, the researcher relies on the uses of digital badges as a motivator and as a sign of credentials …
A Qualitative Study Of Early Adolescents’ Critical Thinking About The Content And Consequences Of Media Violence, Erica Scharrer, Yuxi Zhou
A Qualitative Study Of Early Adolescents’ Critical Thinking About The Content And Consequences Of Media Violence, Erica Scharrer, Yuxi Zhou
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Research shows that young people are likely to encounter considerable amounts of violence in the media they use. Some of those depictions trivialize the severity of violence. Past studies show that media literacy education can spur critical thinking regarding violent portrayals in media texts. But rarely do prior studies employ qualitative methods to understand how young media audience members reason through the key question of whether media violence is either surprising or concerning. In the current study, an in-school media literacy program is offered to 48 6th graders who provide data in the form of written responses to a number …
An Approach To Creative Media Literacy For World Issues, Abduljalil Nasr Hazaea
An Approach To Creative Media Literacy For World Issues, Abduljalil Nasr Hazaea
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This article introduces an approach to creative media literacy for world issues (WIs) such as Covid-19. In so doing, the article integrates four positions on discourse and media as terrible facets of globalization in the context of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The objectivist position deals with WIs as neutral discourse shared among humanity and distributed through English as an international language and educational media. The ideologist position treats creative media literacy as relations of power between global and local identities in the form of competing discourses associated with WIs. The rhetorical position reveals the hidden strategies used in global media …
“Draw The Internet”: A Visual Exploration Of How Children Imagine An Everyday Technology, Luca A. Botturi
“Draw The Internet”: A Visual Exploration Of How Children Imagine An Everyday Technology, Luca A. Botturi
Journal of Media Literacy Education
The internet is today a significant part of children’s daily lives, and digital competences have been included as basic learning goals in many school systems worldwide. In order to develop sound and effective early-age internet education programs, information about how children use the internet should be integrated with insights in how they understand it. This study investigates 8-to-10-year-old children’s understanding of the internet through the qualitative analysis of 51 drawings collected in three primary school classes in Switzerland. The results confirm that children’s conceptions of the internet are rich but often inaccurate or uncomplete. The conceptions collected in this study …
Media, Obesity Discourse, And Participatory Politics: Exploring Digital Engagement Among University Students, Tao Papaioannou
Media, Obesity Discourse, And Participatory Politics: Exploring Digital Engagement Among University Students, Tao Papaioannou
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Situated within research on youth, participatory politics, and media framing of obesity, this study examined how undergraduate students in a media literacy course engaged with obesity discourse as a nexus of civic participation. Twenty-nine students enrolled on the course identified frames of obesity in plus-size model Tess Holliday’s Instagram posts surrounding her controversial Cosmopolitan cover in 2018. Analysis of these frames – self-validation, injustice of fat-shaming and stigmatization, influences of Instagram celebrities on fat embodiment, and health stereotypes of obese people – enabled the students to critique activist responses to accepted body norms and moral values facilitating weight bias. In …

Conceptions Of Adult Education Teachers-In-Training Regarding The Media Literacy Education Of Older People. A Phenomenographic Study To Inform A Course Design, Hanna Vuojärvi, Sirpa Purtilo-Nieminen, Päivi Rasi, Susanna Rivinen
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This phenomenographic study represents part of an ongoing design-based research initiative to inform the design of a new course on older people’s media literacy in the adult-education teacher-education context. The aim was to describe the conceptions of teachers-in-training regarding media literacy education for older people. The data consist of students’ written assignments in which they defined the concept of older people, their societal roles, and of the media literacy education targeting them. The participants included teachers-in-training (N = 22) from a Finnish university’s teacher education program. The data were analyzed qualitatively with the aim of exploring how these students …

Pre-Operative Training Of Patients With Osteoporosis During Premenopause When Planning Dental Implantation (Review Article), Barno J. Pulatova, Nodira G. Achilova
Central Asian Journal of Medicine
The article describes materials on the literature review on the preparation of patients with osteoporosis in the climacteric period when planning implantation. The clinical significance of osteoporosis in the climacteric period lies in the leaching of calcium from the bone into the blood, which makes it possible to minimize the negative influence of the human factor., The high percentage of patients of older age groups, especially women, for the elimination of defects in the dentition with the help of dental implants makes it possible to consider this problem especially relevant, since the asymptomatic, inexpressive course of osteoporosis can be the …

A Scoping Review To Inform Care Coordination Strategies For Youth With Traumatic Brain Injuries: Care Coordination Tools, Brandy Shook, Cara Palusak, Susan C. Davies, Jennifer P. Lundine
Counselor Education and Human Services Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Children with traumatic brain injury (TBI) report unmet needs several years after their injury and may require long-term care. However, this chronic health condition is often only treated and monitored in the short-term. Care for young persons with TBI often relies on parents to manage their child’s complex care network. Effective care coordination can close these gaps and facilitate continuity of care for children with TBI. The purpose of this scoping review was to develop a better understanding of tools that improve care coordination for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN). This, in turn, can inform care for …
Equality And Closure: The Paradox Of Local Citizenship, Kenneth A. Stahl
Equality And Closure: The Paradox Of Local Citizenship, Kenneth A. Stahl
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
In Bourgeois Utopias, a cultural history of suburbia in America, Robert Fishman states the fundamental paradox about the suburbs: “[H]ow can a form based on the principle of exclusion include every-one?” The promise of the American suburb was that every middle-class family would be able to own a home with a yard, but this egalitarian ideal was illusory because what made the suburbs appealing was precisely what it excluded, namely everything having to do with the city—its congestion, political corruption, and most importantly, its racial diversity. And so, as suburbia was mass-produced and made avail-able with cheap low-interest loans …
Boundary As Borderland: Mexico City’S Central Plaza And The Politics Of Presence, Re'al Christian
Boundary As Borderland: Mexico City’S Central Plaza And The Politics Of Presence, Re'al Christian
Theses and Dissertations
In the postcolonial era, the land surrounding national borders—the borderland—has inherited a specific identity and relationship with those who navigate it. While national borderlands are oft discussed amid conversations on globalization, land disputes, and war, the Spanish colonization of the Americas in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries saw the new establishment of borderlands from within in the form of segregative boundaries that purported to separate Indigenous and European peoples. This thesis concerns the manifestation of the borderland as not only an external entity, but an internal one as well. Using Mexico City, the center of the Spanish colonial empire, as …
Questions Of Citizenship And The Nature Of "The Public", Sarah Schindler
Questions Of Citizenship And The Nature Of "The Public", Sarah Schindler
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
This essay is taken from a talk given at a symposium discussing Professor Ken Stahl’s book, Local Citizenship in a Global Age.1 It is not a traditional book review, but rather a series of musings inspired by the ideas in the book.
Professor Stahl’s new book, Local Citizenship in a Global Age, addresses a number of important issues, many of which have been the focus of my prior work: the existence of boundaries, borders, and the spaces in between; who we include in those boundaries and who we exclude; public space, private space, and the lines between them; …
Liberalism, Patriotism, And Cosmopolitanism In Local Citizenship In A Global Age, Eric R. Claeys
Liberalism, Patriotism, And Cosmopolitanism In Local Citizenship In A Global Age, Eric R. Claeys
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
In this review Essay, I survey the most valuable lessons from Local Citizenship in a Global Age. But I have some reservations about the book, and I want to mark those off as well. The book comes off as critical of views that seek to control immigration and to establish relatively demanding criteria for noncitizens to become citizens. In my view, two factors contribute to this impression, and the book would have been more satisfying if both had been addressed.

Out Of Our Depth With Deep Fakes: How The Law Fails Victims Of Deep Fake Nonconsensual Pornography, Kate Kobriger, Janet Zhang, Andrew Quijano, Joyce Guo
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
People have used deep fake technology to generate nonconsensual pornography (NCP) since at least 2017. With technological advances, deep fakes are increasingly easy to create and difficult to identify. This article explores the dearth of both technological and legal recourse for victims of deep fake NCP. It first reviews existing technical solutions for detecting deep fakes, finding that successful deep fake classifiers are often only successful for a short while. As soon as computer scientists publish their work, others build on their discoveries to beat the classification mechanism. Deep fake technology is now so advanced that classification technologies cannot reliably …

How Judicial Application Of Cda § 230 And Fha § 3604 Have Created Safe Havens For Online Housing Discrimination, Sophia A. Studer
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
This article analyzes how the anti-discrimination language of Fair Housing Act section 3604 is currently out of reach for people being discriminated against online through the exclusionary language of Communications Decency Act section 230(c). The exclusionary language in CDA section 230(c) prevents liability from attaching to interactive computer service providers so long as the interactive computer service provider is not a creator or developer of information. Through the decisions of Zeran, Craigslist, and Roommate, the federal appellate courts created broad shield of immunity for interactive computer service providers, leading to a safe haven for discrimination online. Together the courts and …

Elderly Patient With Post-Herpetic Neuralgia Treated With Homoeopathic Medicine: A Case Report, Suraia Parveen, Subhrasankha Das
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Introduction: Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most troublesome complication of herpes zoster (HZ). It often occurs in elderly and immunocompromised persons. PHN is a chronic neuropathic pain that can persist months to years after HZ rashes have healed. The persisting pain causes physical and psychological distress and negatively impacts the quality of life. The conventional method of treatment (CMT) is often only partially effective. In patients with inadequate response, or intolerance to current conventional treatments for pain relief, homoeopathy may be considered. Case Summary: A 64-year-old woman presented with severe neuralgic pain on the right upper chest wall and upper …

When The Dark Shadow Of Virtual Reality Intrudes Into The Real World : A Study Of Ursula Poznanski’S Young Adult Novel, Erebos, Siriporn Sriwarakan
Journal of Letters
This paper studies Ursula Poznanski’s Erebos (2010), a German young adult novel, in terms of the concerns it raises about the dangers of and solutions to computer game addiction among young adults. The novel shows the dominance of the computer game “Erebos,” which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to process the interests and desires of its players. These players are shown attaching themselves to their virtual selves so much that they deny their real-world selves, and are then manipulated by the Erebos AI to commit acts of violence. On the other hand, the novel reveals that such obsession can be solved …

Individualized Homoeopathic Treatment Of Phobic Anxiety Disorders – A Case Series, Deepthi Gilla, Akhila A. L., Sreelakshmy S. R, N D. Mohan
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Introduction: Phobic anxiety disorders (PAD) are common distressing and disabling disorders that reduce the quality of life of an individual. Clinical trials of phobic disorders in conventional treatment are not yet substantiated with too many positive results. Homoeopathy is a well established therapeutic system with potential relevance to psychiatry but has a limited database and its effectiveness in certain disorders such as Phobic disorders is yet to be explored. Cases of phobias, which have been cured in routine homoeopathic practice remain anecdotal. This case series generates preliminary evidence for the usefulness of homoeopathy in phobic disorders. Well planned research studies …

Communication Arts: Faculty Publications
This study examines the one-way information diffusion and two-way dialogic engagement present in public health Twitter chats. Network analysis assessed whether Twitter chats adhere to one of the key principles for online dialogic communication, the dialogic loop (Kent & Taylor, 1998) for four public health-related chats hosted by CDC Twitter accounts. The features of the most retweeted accounts and the most retweeted tweets also were examined. The results indicate that very little dialogic engagement took place. Moreover, the chats seemed to function as pseudoevents primarily used by organizations as opportunities for creating content. However, events such as #PublicHealthChat may serve …
