Exploring Teaching Librarians' Beliefs About Undergraduate Student Learning, Ashlynn Kogut
Exploring Teaching Librarians' Beliefs About Undergraduate Student Learning, Ashlynn Kogut
Communications in Information Literacy
Whether formally articulated or tacitly held, all librarians have beliefs about how undergraduate students learn. Framing learning beliefs as a component of a teaching philosophy, this study explored how librarians described how undergraduate students learned best. Thirteen librarians from three doctoral universities in Texas were interviewed. Teaching librarians in this study believed that students learn in different ways; that students need to interact with others, act, and reflect in order to learn; and that students learn when certain conditions are met. The learning beliefs identified align with learning theories and the science of learning, but the threshold concepts theory underlying …
Care And Compassion, Daisy Cuevas
Care And Compassion, Daisy Cuevas
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many students who struggle with behavioral and mental health issues have a difficult time succeeding in school. Harden Middle School’s Wellness Center is where students struggling with socioemotional, mental, and behavioral health can come to receive support. The Care & Compassion program was created to address students who have more than five F’s or a zero-grade point average (GPA) and are failing classes at a high rate. A lack of parental and student engagement in distance learning, as well as depression due to isolation caused students to fall behind, fail classes and increased mental health concerns. Therefore, the Care & …

Rainbow Impostors: Impostor Syndrome In The Lgbtq+ Community, Kira C. Rideout
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Most people do not enjoy feeling like they are not enough or as like they are not a part of their community. As human beings we are social creatures and our communities play an essential role both in our development as we grow up and for our overall emotional well-being as we continue to live our lives. When people feel like they are an outcast or like they are not contributing to the progress of their community it can have a negative impact on their state of mind. This sense of self-doubt can cause individuals to realize their fear of …
Women Veterans Needs Assessment, Yezzenia Dena
Women Veterans Needs Assessment, Yezzenia Dena
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Military & Veterans Affairs Office in Monterey County stated 20,674 veterans. They provide advocacy, assistance, and services designed to enhance the lives of the county’s veterans who served their country in the Armed Forces, their families, and their survivors. While this purpose is both efficient and admirable, there are still unmet needs in the veteran community. Increasing the support for women veterans within the veteran community requires further effort to address adequately. They are addressing this by understanding the contributing factors, several of which are related to stigma, lack of understanding services, and trauma. This survey took a closer …

Preliteracy Development Of Sound Blending: Teaching Consonant Vowel Consonant Words Through Differentiated Instructional Strategies, Grace Guenther
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This capstone project reports the interventions, progress, and results of five elementary students who were identified as ‘at-risk’ for preliteracy reading skill acquisition. The capstone discusses differentiated instructional strategies and the rotation of intervention strategies utilized to increase the preliteracy skills of the students. The capstone discusses the interventions implemented across four weeks between the collection of baseline and final data. This research finds that students at-risk for acquiring preliteracy skills can increase their preliteracy skills through differentiated instructional strategies.
Terror Tactics: Vehicular Attacks In Israel, Garrett Smith
Terror Tactics: Vehicular Attacks In Israel, Garrett Smith
Honors Theses
Vehicular ramming attacks are a relatively new phenomenon within transnational terrorism. Their use is concentrated heavily within Israel and the West Bank. Using data from the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database, I conduct an analysis of automobilebased terrorist attacks in Israel and the West Bank. I identify examine the relationship between Israeli counterterrorism policy, specifically the institution of barriers to physical movement, and the adoption of vehicle ramming tactics. These walls and checkpoints inadvertently provoke vehicle ramming attacks, even if effective at reducing firearm and explosive-based attacks. Exploration of existing literature on terrorist tactic selection suggests that vehicular attacks …

The Political And Criminological Conspiracy Of Terrosism: A Case Study Of Nigeria, Cajetan Chidi Ihe
The Political And Criminological Conspiracy Of Terrosism: A Case Study Of Nigeria, Cajetan Chidi Ihe
Dissertations (2016-Present)
Nigeria has recently witnessed the repeated prevalence of a fog of terror that has threatened the stability, peace, and sovereignty of the nation. While the world's attention focuses on Afghanistan, Iraq, and bombings in embassies around the Western world, shocking terrorist activities with immeasurably devastating impacts are regularly ignored by the Nigerian government and the international community. Since 1970, Nigeria has continued to experience repeated domestic attacks entrenched in different forms of tensions and motivations. The Global Terrorism Index (2019) ranked Nigeria as the third most terrorized country in the world, behind only Iraq and Afghanistan with 1,634 attacks, 16,108 …
Touching Sound: Passion And Global Politics, Maria Frederika Malmström, Mark Levine
Touching Sound: Passion And Global Politics, Maria Frederika Malmström, Mark Levine
Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series
How does sound shape and/or constrain the actions of individuals and groups? In what ways does 'touching sound' constitute important stimuli within everyday experiences and how/why does sound induce strong affective states? How does listening to noise as well as to silences, screeches and songs, clicks and pops, affect us? By focusing on the under-studied realm of sound we increase our understanding of the politics of the sonic. This text opens an interdisciplinary conduit that should enable cross-fertilizations between the disciplines of anthropology, ethnomusicology, history, cultural studies, religious studies and political sociology, bringing together studies of aesthetic production, the …
Why Can’T I Have A Choice Of Companion During Labor? Barriers To Implementation Of Companion Presence, Anul Shifa Maknojia, Azwa Malik
Why Can’T I Have A Choice Of Companion During Labor? Barriers To Implementation Of Companion Presence, Anul Shifa Maknojia, Azwa Malik
Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)
Companionship during labor gives comfort and reassurance to laboring women. Couples should experience this pivotal part of life together for its successful accomplishment. They bestow maternal support and ensure psychological wellbeing. However, there are some health care facilities who don’t permit the woman to bring a companion. The common barriers for not allowing companions during labor are: the utilization of traditional methods by companions, improper architectural layout, various ethnicities, and policies of hospitals. Thus, practical and realistic actions should be taken as discussed in the paper. Therefore, a laboring woman can utilize the choice of a companion during labor.
Why Searle's Objection To Twin Earth Is Problematic, Paul F. Scheeler
Why Searle's Objection To Twin Earth Is Problematic, Paul F. Scheeler
Honors Theses
The philosopher John Searle wrote that, “The fundamental question in the philosophy of language has always been: How does language relate to reality?” For much of history, people assumed the answer to this question was “the mind”, and the debate was then about how the mind related language to reality. Starting in the 1970s, this view was challenged by the philosopher Hilary Putnam and others who claimed that meaning is not only in the mind but also involved the environment (a view known as semantic externalism). In this paper, I will give some background to Putnam’s semantic externalism and will …

Qualitative Research On Pant Fit: To Improve Plus-Size Fit In The Plus-Size Market, Lenora Brown
Theses
This study explored the plussize apparel fit and the satisfaction of the plussize women in the United States. This study took a qualitative approach and used structured interviews and surveys with twenty plus-size women size 16 through 22 and ages ranging from 22 through 50 in the Midwest area. The results of the interviews and the survey indicate the plus-size woman is unsatisfied with the fit of their clothing, more specifically the fit of their pants. The results indicate there are many variants …
School Principals’ Awareness Of Their Emotional Intelligence And Connections To Leadership, Lourdes M. Pimentel Soto
School Principals’ Awareness Of Their Emotional Intelligence And Connections To Leadership, Lourdes M. Pimentel Soto
Dissertations
Leaders set the tone and mood of the organization through their attitudes and actions. This emotional climate set by the leader has been found to influence employee’s performance, including their sense of job satisfaction and commitment. In other words, what sets great leaders apart from their peers is their ability to drive the emotions of those they lead in the right direction. This ability to understand and manage one’s and other’s emotions is what is known as emotional intelligence (EI).
This qualitative study explored the perceptions of K-12 principals’ awareness of their EI in relation to how they lead, and …
