All ETDs from UAB

Wellness and wellbeing have been a national priority in the United States of American for many years. Since 1961, wellbeing models have been created and reconstructed to define our understanding of what wellbeing is as well as what it should or could potentially be. These endeavors have contributed to a body of research that serve as a foundation for this study. The aim of this study was to review current theory and design a qualitative study to determine if current theory could be expanded upon utilizing religion, spirituality, faith and centeredness as central grounding principles for the model. This was …

Teaching Peace During Multigeneration War, William J. Cork Jan 2021

Teaching Peace During Multigeneration War, William J. Cork

180 Symposium Publications

For the first time in U.S. history, soldiers are deploying to a war that began before they were born. Today’s youth and emerging adults have grown up in a world of endless war, fear, and resurgent nationalism. Yet they are open to new possibilities and increasingly engaged. The earliest Adventists spoke against war and bearing of arms and in favor of peace and justice. Can this generation rediscover that vision?

Understanding Sexual Abuse And Redemption Of Persons With Sexual Abuse History Through The Person And Work Of Jesus Christ, Nag Chi Wong Jan 2021

Understanding Sexual Abuse And Redemption Of Persons With Sexual Abuse History Through The Person And Work Of Jesus Christ, Nag Chi Wong

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

“Where can sexual abuse survivors find hope in God?” In order to seek an answer to this question, I turned to the person and work of Christ. My hope and belief are that through looking at the person and work of Jesus, where fullness of God was pleased to dwell, we might be able to find the message that God is speaking to God’s hurting children. What is God telling us about Godself, about sexual abuse survivors, and about all God’s people through Jesus’ incarnation, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection, as well as through the eternal Lamb? Much has been written …

Spiritual Life Of The Christian Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Family, Moses Mary Apreku Jan 2021

Spiritual Life Of The Christian Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Family, Moses Mary Apreku

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The Asia-Pacific Christian immigrants and non-immigrants have a huge impact on Western Christianity. Therefore, special pastoral care, faith, and spiritual formation should be given to immigrant families so that they can become efficient lay missionaries. Unfortunately, proper faith formation of the lay faithful is lacking in the Church, while by virtue of their baptism, they are also called to witness Christ in the world. The formation and training of Christians in the faith is essential so that as Christ’s disciples, they may become his efficient witnesses in the world. For this reason, Jesus took three years in training and forming …

Reframing Hegemonic And Fragmented Identities Through Subjective In-Betweenness: A Postcolonial Political Theology Of Care And Praxis In Ethiopia’S Era Of Identity Politics, Rode Shewaye Molla Jan 2021

Reframing Hegemonic And Fragmented Identities Through Subjective In-Betweenness: A Postcolonial Political Theology Of Care And Praxis In Ethiopia’S Era Of Identity Politics, Rode Shewaye Molla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern Ethiopian imperial religious and political evangelization generated and imposed externally-defined hegemonic fictive identities on all Ethiopians. This fictive identity (based on Amhara) contributes to current identity politics that cause ethnic violence, political instability, war, identity fragmentation, and, most of all, the elimination of in-between spaces where boundaries of identity can be crossed for peaceful co-existence. This dissertation integrates the study of Ethiopian religion and politics to advocate the restoration of in-between spaces and in-between subjectivities of Ethiopians. In-between spaces include political, social, religious, and geographical spaces that enable Ethiopians to live as a diversified community with solidarity, equity, care, …

Ambivalence Over Emotion Expression And The Effects Of Religious Coping In African American Christians, Anya Loraine Dobbs

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African Americans are 10% more likely than non-Hispanic Whites to report having serious mental health issues from psychological stressors. Mental health concerns, such as depression and anxiety, that arise from psychological stressors, are more than likely to go untreated in African Americans. African Americans are more likely to turn to religion- their church, their pastors, and fellow parishioners to address these concerns. Religion and religious coping has influenced African Americans’ attitudes regarding help-seeking and mental health treatment, with the “Black Church” historically being a source of many things, including mental health care. Pargament’s theory of religious coping served as a …

Evaluating The Moral Framing Of Disaffiliation: Sociological And Pastoral Perspectives On The Rise Of The “Nones”, Brett C. Hoover

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The wave of religious disaffiliation that began in the 1990s in the United States has gone from a concern of pastoral leaders to perhaps the concern of pastoral leaders. This article examines a moral framing of religious disaffiliation—where disaffiliation is seen as a symptom of larger moral struggles in society. After a review of contemporary sociological research on the phenomenon of disaffiliation, its roots and causes, the article explores the thinking of the influential Catholic bishop and media entrepreneur Robert Barron as an example of the moral framing of religious disaffiliation. Barron operates as a “moral entrepreneur” in today’s media-rich …

Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Catholic Priests, Richard Ehusani Jan 2021

Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Catholic Priests, Richard Ehusani

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research suggests that the clergy could be at the risk of developing secondary traumatic stress (STS) because of their secondary exposure to trauma within pastoral work; however, there has been no explicit discussion of STS related to Catholic priests who may be more at the risk of developing STS than their counterparts in other churches. The requirement of priestly celibacy often leaves Catholic priests with little to no immediate social and emotional support network of family. Because of their sacred vow to keep the confessional seal unbroken in whatever circumstance, Catholic priests also may not share confessional information, even when …

Spiritual Dimensions Of Care: Need For Spiritual Care Interventions In Nursing Clinical Practice, Jillian Jack Jan 2021

Spiritual Dimensions Of Care: Need For Spiritual Care Interventions In Nursing Clinical Practice, Jillian Jack

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Empirical research has identified emerging evidence concerning the value and importance of spirituality in the provision of nursing care. Spiritual well-being has important implications for a patient’s well-being and there is evidence that points to the association between spirituality, individual healthcare outcomes, and quality of life (QOL). Assisting patients in meeting their spiritual needs is also recognized internationally. Despite the fact that spiritual care is an essential part of nursing care, there remains a gap concerning spiritual care practices in the nursing clinical environment. The magnitude of the problem has to do with the lack of spiritual care education training. …
