Operationalizing A New Method For Defining And Scaling Social Innovations Using Tiny Home Communities As A Case Study, Jennifer H. Wilson Jan 2021

Operationalizing A New Method For Defining And Scaling Social Innovations Using Tiny Home Communities As A Case Study, Jennifer H. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social innovations are new approaches to addressing unmet need. In an increasingly globalized and interconnected world, social innovations propagate rapidly in response to the dynamic conditions of our modern world. An example of an emergent social innovation, tiny home communities are gaining traction as a more economically, socially, and environmentally favorable response to homelessness and inadequacies in the current shelter and housing system. The use of tiny homes communities (that is, intentional clusters of small-scale structures) as an innovative response to homelessness is relatively new. As such, there is limited empirical evidence on the topic. Lack of research and defined …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Milk and dairy products provide highly sustainable concentrations of essential amino acids and other required nutrients for humans; however, amount of milk currently produced per dairy cow globally is inadequate to meet future needs. Higher performing dairy cows and herds produce more milk with less environmental impact per kg than lower performing cows and herds. In 2018, 15.4% of the world's dairy cows produced 45.4% of the world's dairy cow milk, reflecting the global contribution of high-performing cows and herds. In high-performing herds, genomic evaluations are utilized for multiple trait selection, welfare is monitored by remote sensing, rations are formulated …

Meal Preparation Constraints In Emerging Adults In College, Rachael Alpert Jan 2021

Meal Preparation Constraints In Emerging Adults In College, Rachael Alpert

Undergraduate Review

Emerging adults in college are in a time of adjustment, and as a result of this, their diets can suffer. In previous studies, meal preparation has proven to result in a healthier and more nutritious diet. With the understanding that an increase in meal preparation leads to the improvement of diet and nutrition, my study looks at what factors constrain meal preparation in emerging adults. The constraints emerging adults have with meal preparation and maintaining a healthy diet can include the frequency of meal preparation, confidence in cooking, time constraints for meal preparation, financial worry for grocery shopping, and a …

Comparing The Condition Of Deformed And Non-Deformed Walleyes In Long Lake, Mn, Clayton Beck

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Walleye Sander vitreus is a popular game fish in Minnesota. Walleye’s have become such a popular game fish for anglers that it has led agencies to raise Walleye in rearing ponds. Farm raised fish can show deformities due to environmental, genetic, nutritional, infectious, and toxic factors. Due to this phenomenon, the purpose of this study was to determine if the condition of the Walleye differed between those with and without deformities in Long Lake, MN. Angling was the method of capture during the months of September 2020 through July 2021. There was no evidence to suggest condition differed between non-deformed …

Tissue Biodistribution And Tumor Targeting Of Near-Infrared Labelled Anti-Cd38 Antibody-Drug Conjugate In Preclinical Multiple Myeloma, Nicholas Cho, Sooah Ko, Monica Shokeen

Open Access Publications

Daratumumab (DARA) is an FDA-approved high-affinity monoclonal antibody targeting CD38 that has shown promising therapeutic efficacy in double refractory multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Despite the well-established clinical efficacy of DARA, not all heavily pretreated patients respond to single-agent DARA, and the majority of patients who initially respond eventually progress. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) combine the highly targeted tumor antigen recognition of antibodies with the cell killing properties of chemotherapy for effective internalization and processing of the drug. In this study, we evaluated the anti-tumor efficacy of DARA conjugated to the maytansine derivative, mertansine (DM1), linked via a non-cleavable bifunctional linker. The …

Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions are widely related to climate change, triggering several environmental problems of global concern and producing environmental, social, and economic negative impacts. Therefore, global research seeks to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, the use of wastes under a circular economy scheme generates subproducts from the range of high to medium-value, representing away to help sustainable development. Therefore, the use of wastewater as a culture medium to grow microalgae strains that biocapture environmental CO2, is a proposal with high potential to reduce the GHG presence in the environment. In this work, Scenedesmus sp. …

Hellish Indigestion: Consumption As Knowledge In Medieval Descensus Christi Accounts, Harley Joyce Campbell Jan 2021

Hellish Indigestion: Consumption As Knowledge In Medieval Descensus Christi Accounts, Harley Joyce Campbell

Quidditas

Present throughout medieval iconography and drama, the hellmouth relays a frightening glimpse of what awaits sinners after death. However, our perception of the hellmouth becomes complicated when we study these images in conjunction with Hell’s portrayal as a speaking character. Ascribing anthropomorphic qualities to Hell makes its theological implications more approachable for a non-clerical audience, effectively forming connections between human sinners and a figure of unimaginable monstrosity. This essay examines the medieval Latin Gospel of Nicodemus and its first Middle English descendant, the verse Digby Harrowing of Hell, in terms of how these texts describe the physiology of Hell …

Lipid Droplet Membrane Proteome Remodeling Parallels Ethanol-Induced Hepatic Steatosis And Its Resolution, Carol A. Casey, Terrence M. Donohue Jr., Jacy L. Kubik, Vikas Kumar, Michael J. Naldrett, Nicholas T. Woods, Cole P. Frisbie, Mark A. Mcniven, Paul G. Thomes

Nebraska Center for Biotechnology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Abstract Lipid droplets (LDs) are composed of neutral lipids enclosed in a phospholipid monolayer, which harbors membrane-associated proteins that regulate LD functions. Despite the crucial role of LDs in lipid metabolism, remodeling of LD protein composition in disease contexts, such as steatosis, remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that chronic ethanol consumption, subsequent abstinence from ethanol, or fasting differentially affects the LD membrane proteome content and that these changes influence how LDs interact with other intracellular organelles. Here, male Wistar rats were pair-fed liquid control or ethanol diets for 6 weeks, and then, randomly chosen animals from both groups were either …

Community Engagement: Moving From The Classroom To Interprofessional Education Collaboration, Melissa Wholeben, Sarah Yvonne Jimenez, Carla Ellis

Nursing Faculty Publications

In a dynamic, rapidly evolving global health care environment, it is vital that educators create arenas of learning that give students opportunities to put into action health concepts they have learned in the classroom and to actively engage in their communities. With limited clinical sites, it has become necessary to think outside the box for potential community opportunities. One baccalaureate nursing program has moved students from planning mock health fairs to collaborating with community partners to host large public health fairs with wide reach. Community outreach efforts have expanded to include interprofessional collaborations with students of other health care disciplines …

The Psychological And Technological Intersectionality In Game Design And Development, Nicholas Saladino

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Over the past number of decades, video games and game design have been evolving and pushing technology forward. This is quite obvious when comparing the original Pong (1972) to God of War (2018). Pong is a simple recreation of table tennis, on the other hand, God of War is a large-scale action-adventure game with highly realistic graphics. What brings these two games together is that they are both meant for a player to enjoy. At the time of each game’s creation, the developers were utilizing the available technology to its fullest. While technology has been advancing, the psychology and philosophy …

Theoretical Framework To Assess Green Roof Performance In Mitigating Urban Flooding As A Potential Nature-Based Solution, Arunima Sakar Basu, Francesco Pila, Srikanta Sannigrahi, Rémi Gengembre, Bidroha Basu

Publications

Increases in extreme hydro-meteorological events due to climate change and decreases in soil permeability and infiltration due to urbanization have increased the risk of flooding, particularly in cities. The limitation of the expansion of conventional drainage systems to manage excess stormwater leads to the application of nature-based solutions (NBS) to control flooding. This study explores potential of green roof NBS for rainfall-fed flood reduction, which can utilize existing roof space for deployment. A detailed literature survey using systematic literature-search procedures was conducted to investigate the performance of extensive/intensive green roofs in runoff reduction using monitoring/modeling approaches. Since limited studies have …

The Effect Of Long-Acting Dual Bronchodilator Therapy On Exercise Tolerance, Dynamic Hyperinflation, And Dead Space During Constant Work Rate Exercise In Copd, William W. Stringer, Janos Porszasz, Min Cao, Harry B. Rossiter, Shahid Siddiqui, Stephen I. Rennard, Richard Casaburi

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

We investigated whether dual bronchodilator therapy (glycopyrrolate/formoterol fumarate; GFF; Bevespi Aerosphere) would increase exercise tolerance during a high-intensity constant work rate exercise test (CWRET) and the relative contributions of dead space ventilation (VD/VT) and dynamic hyperinflation (change in inspiratory capacity) to exercise limitation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In all, 48 patients with COPD (62.9 ± 7.6 yrs; 33 male; GOLD spirometry stage 1/2/3/4, n = 2/35/11/0) performed a randomized, double blind, placebo (PL) controlled, two-period crossover, single-center trial. Gas exchange and inspiratory capacity (IC) were assessed during cycle ergometry at 80% incremental exercise peak …

An Analysis Of Job Description And Person Specifications To Define The Requirements For Obtaining Employment Within Strength & Conditioning, James Vernau, Chris Bishop, Shyam Chavda, Anthony Weldon, Sean Maloney, Robert Pacey, Anthony N Turner

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)

The strength and conditioning (S&C) industry can appear as a saturated market: there is a lack of balance between supply and demand of S&C coaches, with the former outweighing the latter. Job descriptions may be an effective tool for aspiring coaches to identify what current skill sets employers are looking for, in particular those deemed essential, but also those deemed desirable and potentially providing a competitive edge. However, it should be acknowledged that job descriptions can vary greatly with the information they provide with regards to qualifications, experience, and skill sets they expect from the applicant. This may make it …
