A Computational Investigation Of The Biophysical Mechanisms Underlying Thermotaxis In The Afd Neurons Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Zachary Mobille

Theses and Dissertations

Thermotaxis in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is studied at the cellular scale of the amphid finger-like ciliated (AFD) neurons, which have previously been shown to be essential for thermoreception. The voltage and calcium signals of AFD during temperature stimuli are described with ordinary differential equations. The primary calcium model is a modified version of that published by Kuramochi and Doi in 2017 to explain the calcium responses of the chemosensitive amphid single-ciliated right (ASER) neuron to fluctuations in extracellular salt concentration. To account for the effects of temperature, changes to the stimuli conditions under which inactivation takes place …

Prevention Of Pressure Ulcers, Lauren Venegoni, Jordan Daugherty

Scholars Week

Pressure ulcers are one of the most common challenges all healthcare settings face. Since this is such a prevalent issue in all of nursing, proper interventions need to be put in place to prevent an occurrence. Utilizing risk assessment tools, early mobilization, repositioning, preventive skin care measures, good nutrition, and prophylactic dressings are just a few ways in which nurses can prevent PUs. There is emerging research on the use of silicone dressings in conjunction with other preventive measures that need to be taken in order to improve patient outcomes.

Opioids Are Not A Major Cause Of Death Of Patients With Sickle Cell Disease., Samir K. Ballas

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) database, the total number of deaths due to opioid overdose from 1999 through 2018 was 840,629. Given the alarming nature of these statistics, patients who requested prescription for opioids became targets of suspicion and possible accusation of maladaptive behavior. Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) were often not exempt from such accusations and became guilty by association. In order to clarify the effect of opioids on the mortality of patients with SCD, the mortality rates for children and adults with SCD were investigated using the CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for …

Individuals with chronic conditions face challenges that can negatively impact their health in a variety of ways. One such example is the correlation between rheumatoid arthritis and the development of periodontal disease. Studies have suggested several possible biological mechanisms by which autoimmune conditions like arthritis and immune-inflammatory conditions like periodontal disease can interact. In this study we plan to look at possible linkage between a clinical condition, rheumatoid arthritis, and its possible subsequent relationship in creating the conditions for the development of periodontal disease due to its hindering the ability of an affected person to perform daily healthcare routines. Our …

Nox2 Inhibition Regulates Stress Response And Mitigates Skeletal Muscle Fiber Atrophy During Simulated Microgravity, John M. Lawler, Jeffrey M. Hord, Pat Ryan, Dylan Holly, Mariana Janini Gomes, Dinah Rodriguez, Vinicius Guzzoni

Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications

Insufficient stress response and elevated oxidative stress can contribute to skeletal muscle atrophy during mechanical unloading (e.g., spaceflight and bedrest). Perturbations in heat shock proteins (e.g., HSP70), antioxidant enzymes, and sarcolemmal neuronal nitric oxidase synthase (nNOS) have been linked to unloading-induced atrophy. We recently discovered that the sarcolemmal NADPH oxidase-2 complex (Nox2) is elevated during unloading, downstream of angiotensin II receptor 1, and concomitant with atrophy. Here, we hypothesized that peptidyl inhibition of Nox2 would attenuate disruption of HSP70, MnSOD, and sarcolemmal nNOS during unloading, and thus muscle fiber atrophy. F344 rats were divided into control (CON), hindlimb unloaded (HU), …

An Arabidopsis Oxalyl-Coa Decarboxylase, Atoxc, Is Important For Oxalate Catabolism In Plants, Justin Foster, Ninghui Cheng, Vincent Paris, Lingfei Wang, Jin Wang, Xiaoqiang Wang, Paul A Nakata

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Considering the widespread occurrence of oxalate in nature and its broad impact on a host of organisms, it is surprising that so little is known about the turnover of this important acid. In plants, oxalate oxidase is the most well-studied enzyme capable of degrading oxalate, but not all plants possess this activity. Recently, acyl-activating enzyme 3 (AAE3), encoding an oxalyl-CoA synthetase, was identified in Arabidopsis. This enzyme has been proposed to catalyze the first step in an alternative pathway of oxalate degradation. Since this initial discovery, this enzyme and proposed pathway have been found to be important to other plants …

Wrongful Incarceration Causes Substantial Bodily Harm: Why Lawyers Should Be Allowed To Breach Confidentiality To Help Exonerate The Innocent, Vania M. Smith

Catholic University Law Review

The Model Rules of Professional Conduct (MRPC) governs the conduct of lawyers and provides the framework for how individual states and territories craft their rules. Rules regarding confidentiality have been central through the many iterations of these rules since their inception. Client confidentiality protections are critical to establishing and maintaining the public trust in the profession. Rule 1.6 of the MRPC gives a lawyer the opportunity to divulge a client confidence under varying circumstances, including the prevention of “substantial bodily harm”. To date, this has not resulted in a wide interpretation that this exception includes wrongful incarceration. This article seeks …
