The wound healing process is a multi-step cellular and biochemical process. For wound healing, antibiotics; preservatives; desalination agents; chemicals; and others are used. Some of these synthetic drugs are limited due to side effects. For this reason, the use of medicinal plants for wound healing has increased in popularity over the years due to the reduction of side effects. In fact, previous studies proved that Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (gumamela) extract can be used to treat wounds. Thus, the purpose of this study intends to evaluate the wound healing potentials of the formulated herbal ointment containing the gumamela ethanolic leaf extracts. The …

Emerging microbial agents have been increasing in number. Microbial agents are necessary in combating microbes such as bacteria that cause viruses and diseases. Hence, some bacteria are being resistant to antioxidant and antibacterial drugs that is why it resulted to find antimicrobial agents coming from organic molecules. This reason resulted in the researchers finding an organic antimicrobial agent using Mango Bark Aqueous Extract (MBAE). In the previous studies, it was proven that Mangifera indica (Mango) has phytochemicals that help inhibit the growth of bacteria. Thus, the researchers screened the antimicrobial activity of MBAE by applying the MBAE with a concentration …

Human Performance and Sport Sciences faculty Research
Objectives
The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence of overweight/obesity and to explore sex differences in body weight perceptions and correlates of weight gain among Black students at 2 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the USA.Methods
Participants completed a paper-based survey, and their height and weight were measured (67% completion rate). Results
The overweight and obesity rates were 33.8% and 26.9%, respectively. More females than males accurately assessed their weight (p<0.05). Body weight underestimation was associated with male sex, excellent/very good perceived overall health, and not being informed by a doctor of having overweight or obesity (p<0.01). Higher odds of ≥5% weight gain were related to female sex, living on campus, and not being informed by a doctor of having overweight or obesity (p<0.05).Conclusion
Given the high overweight and obesity rates among Black students, HBCUs in the USA should develop intervention strategies for …0.05).>0.01).>0.05).>“Information Has Value” In Business Library Instruction: Approaching The Frame Three Ways, Grace Liu, Lumarie Guth, Ilana Stonebreaker

Declining Knowledge On Paper Food Storage And Preparation Household Food Waste And Sustainability, Luke Ramirez-Bryan, Amir Golmohamadi
Nutrition Student Work
In 2020 in the U.S alone over 40 million tons of food was wasted. Part of this this waste is attributed to discarded fruits and vegetables and equals to 7% of croplands’ yearly production. Reducing food waste can be an important factor in improving environmental and social sustainability. Lack, or inadequate, knowledge of food preparation, storage, and cooking has contributed to this loss. One method of reducing food wastes is decreasing the amount of waste in households by using nutrition education intervention such as training local communities to improve their cooking skills and general food storage and preparation knowledge. Consumers …

Freshwater is in short supply but the demand for it is constantly growing. Water footprint is used to indicate the amount of fresh water that any given process or activity uses. Growing and processing animal products have a much higher water footprint than crops such as fruits and vegetables. More information and research must be carried out regarding water footprints to improve overall sustainability and use of fresh water. Continuous research on developing policies, and more sustainable habits, must be developed to conserve the current freshwater resources. The objective of this research is preparing a report that can be used …

Healthcare In A Vulnerable Population: Female Inmates In The Usa, Shanon Ward
Psychology Student Work
The prison population of the United States is estimated at around 6,410,000 (Maruschak & Minton, 2018). Studies have found that access to healthcare for inmates is subpar with a lack of routine examinations and preventative care and an earlier onset and higher rate of chronic medical conditions than the general population. In addition to the lack of healthcare for all inmates, specific at-risk subpopulations are likely to receive even less healthcare support due to discrimination and “invisible” illnesses. This research explores the health care and support services available to an underrepresented and vulnerable group of prisoners: Female inmates, pregnant inmates, …

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are common malformities resulting in exposed spinal cord or brain tissues caused by the inability to close the neural tube in embryogenesis. Previous research has shown folate deficiency increases the risk of NTDs. A folic acid metabolism gene, serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is responsible for the synthesis of thymidylates, purines, and methionine which are important for DNA replication especially during embryogenesis. Typically, eukaryotes have two copies of SHMT which are either localized to remain in the cytosol or transferred to the mitochondria. The different localizations are a result of mitochondrial target sequences on the N-terminus. Interestingly, the …

Systemic insulin sensitivity shows a diurnal rhythm with a peak upon waking1,2. The molecular mechanism that underlies this temporal pattern is unclear. Here we show that the nuclear receptors REV-ERB-α and REV-ERB-β (referred to here as ‘REV-ERB’) in the GABAergic (γ-aminobutyric acid-producing) neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) (SCNGABA neurons) control the diurnal rhythm of insulin-mediated suppression of hepatic glucose production in mice, without affecting diurnal eating or locomotor behaviours during regular light–dark cycles. REV-ERB regulates the rhythmic expression of genes that are involved in neurotransmission in the SCN, and modulates the oscillatory firing activity of SCNGABA neurons. Chemogenetic stimulation …

Two sympatric pinniped species, Peruvian fur seals (PFS; Arctocephalus australis unnamed ssp.) and South American sea lions (SASL; Otaria byronia), reside in highly productive waters off the coast of Peru. These apex predators have experienced dramatic population fluctuations linked to both natural and anthropogenic events. As Peru’s mining and agriculture industry increase, it is important to monitor potential effects on the vulnerable ecosystem. Fifteen trace elements in PFS and SASL vibrissae (whiskers), serum, and milk collected between 2009 and 2019 were analyzed via inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS): aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), …

This project examines environmental discourse and rhetorical appeals used on Instagram by environmental influencers and addresses the lack of scholarship about social mobile commerce, Instagram, and the popularity of “eco-influencers.” My research applies post-composition studies, circulation, and visual rhetoric to two eco-influencers, Greta Thunberg (@gretathunbeerg) and Jessica Clifton (@impactforgood). I argue that Thunberg and Clifton employ aesthetic and apocalyptic rhetoric to educate and communicate with their following about reducing their carbon footprint and reversing climate change. By collecting three months of Instagram posts employed by each influencer, I identify patterns related to environmentalism, stylistic choices in captions, and presentation of …

Investigations Into The Cellular Target Of 4-Trifluoromethoxy Chalcone Via Darts Method, Jordan Stacy
Undergraduate Theses
Cellular drug target discovery is an important step in any drugs journey from bench to bedside. This is true for our lab's molecule of interest, the Chalcone. The Chalcone molecule and its derivatives have been identified as small, plant-derived secondary metabolites that, when interacting with human cancer cell lines, trigger apoptotic pathways leading to varying levels of cell death. One derivative, 4-Trifluoromethoxy Chalcone (4TFM), was identified through screenings as inducing the highest death rate in A549 cancer cells, in conjunction with having the lowest IC50, making it a good candidate to use in searching for the currently unknown cellular target …

Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Early-life period (≤ 1 month after birth) is critical for determining long- and short-term health of neonates. Composition of neonates’ gut microbiota varies greatly between individuals whose development is influenced by various factors including differences in maternal diet and lifestyle during pregnancy, related to population and ethnicity. Balanced microbial composition can create symbiosis among commensal microbes, immunomodulatory compound production, and subsequent immune response regulation. Unbalanced microbiota composition, characterized by more pathogenic organism, less diversity, and less resistance to disease, is called dysbiosis. Probiotic bacteria are a bacteria group contributing to the balance of neonates’ gut microbiota. Probiotic bacterial strains, such …

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
The care of older patients with cancer is becoming increasingly complex. Common challenges for this population include management of comorbidities, safe transitions of care, and appropriate medication use. In particular, polypharmacy-generally defined as the regular use of five or more medications-and inappropriate medication use can lead to adverse effects and poor outcomes in older adults with cancer, including falls, hospital readmissions, cognitive impairment, poor adherence to essential medications, chemotherapy toxicity, and increased mortality. Managing polypharmacy across different cancer care settings is often challenging. Providers face barriers to safe and successful medication management that may include lack of time, absence of …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Prior research examining the relationship between cannabis use, sedentary behavior, and physical activity has generated conflicting findings, potentially due to biases in the self-reported measures used to assess physical activity. This study aimed to more precisely explore the relationship between cannabis use and sedentary behavior/physical activity using objective measures.
Methods
Data were obtained from the 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 2,092 participants (ages 20–59; 48.8% female) had accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Participants were classified as light, moderate, frequent, or non-current cannabis users depending on how often they used …

Exploring Mental Health Experience In Individuals Living With Temporomandibular Disorders, Wafaa Safour, Richard Hovey
Patient Experience Journal
Despite the evidence supporting deteriorating mental health because of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) conditions, there is limited evidence of TMD patients' experience regarding how their mental health is affected by the disorders. As a sequence of these conditions, TMD patients suffer from physical and mental complications, not to mention the loss of food enjoyment. In this study, we aim to explore TMD patients' lived experiences who had changed their dietary habits concerning their mental health. Six participants were interviewed to answer open-ended questions during semi-structured interviews regarding their mental health experiences with TMD-related food routine changes. These interviews were held face-to-face …
