Nocturnal Pollination In Fruit Agriculture, Stephen Robertson Jul 2021

Nocturnal Pollination In Fruit Agriculture, Stephen Robertson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Insect pollination in agriculture provides as much as 35% of the global food supply and contributes hundreds of billions of dollars to the global economy each year. In the past 30 years, reports of declining populations of managed and wild bees, notably the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and a wide array of bumble bees (Bombus spp.), have raised concerns about the stability and outlook of agriculture. At the same time, agricultural dependence on insect pollinators is increasing as greater percentages of land being converted to pollinator-dependent crops, such as soy and oil palm, than pollinator-independent crops, such as grains …

Establishment Of Pollinator Habitat Within A Livestock Pasture Ecosystem, Roshani Sharma Acharya Jul 2021

Establishment Of Pollinator Habitat Within A Livestock Pasture Ecosystem, Roshani Sharma Acharya

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Pollinators are important for fertilization, setting fruits, and seed development of more than 78% of the flowering plants that provide food for human beings and other species. Use of pollinators to maximize crop production is a proven agricultural practice; however, it has been less explored in livestock forage production systems. This study investigated pollinator abundance and diversity in pastures using different sampling methods and determined the impact of different pasture management practices on insect pollinators in a livestock pasture ecosystem. In Chapter 2, utility of four different colors of pan trap (blue, green, yellow, and purple) for sampling bees in …

Publications and Research

Introduction HIV transmission within serodifferent heterosexual couples plays a key role in sustaining the global HIV pandemic. In the USA, transmission within established mixed-status couples accounts for up to half of all new HIV infections among heterosexuals. Oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention method, although underutilised among serodifferent couples. Moreover, there is a dearth of research on US HIV-serodifferent couples’ perspectives and use of PrEP, alone or in combination with other prevention methods. In this paper, we describe the study protocol for the Magnetic Couples Study, designed to fill critical knowledge gaps regarding HIV-serodifferent heterosexual couples’ …

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Wild birds modulate wing and whole-body kinematics to adjust their flight patterns and trajectories when wing loading increases flight power requirements. Domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) in backyards and farms exhibit feather loss, naturally high wing loading, and limited flight capabilities. Yet, housing chickens in aviaries requires birds to navigate three-dimensional spaces to access resources. To understand the impact of feather loss on laying hens’ flight capabilities, we symmetrically clipped the primary and secondary feathers before measuring wing and whole-body kinematics during descent from a 1.5 m platform. We expected birds to compensate for increased wing loading by increasing wingbeat …

Pathways To Just, Equitable And Sustainable Trade And Investment Regimes, Tomaso Ferrando, Nicolas Perrone, Olabisi D. Akinkugbe, Kangping Du

Reports & Public Policy Documents

In this report we discuss what a Fair, Just and Equitable approach to the global, liberalized and hyper-competitive system of global trade and investments should be. The global market for goods and capital affect the life of producers and workers, stimulates the run towards cheaper products and puts farmers and workers against each other. The current vision of trade and investments is based on the silencing of gendered and reproductive labour and is responsible for the increase in inequality and relative poverty. Furthermore, it stimulates the extraction of commodities and contributes to the degradation of the planet, it has a …

Buyer Beware: An Exploratory Assessment Of The Static And Dynamic Effects Of The New Chilean Food Labeling Model, Omar Vasquez Duque Jul 2021

Buyer Beware: An Exploratory Assessment Of The Static And Dynamic Effects Of The New Chilean Food Labeling Model, Omar Vasquez Duque

UC Law SF International Law Review

Chile recently introduced an innovative food warning label system that intends to reduce current overweight and obesity levels among the Chilean population. This initiative has been generally commended worldwide. Chile’s new food labeling system mandates food producers to include a warning label that resembles a stop sign when the product exceeds a certain level of calories, fat, sodium, and sugar per 100 mg. The idea behind this regulation is that by making health risks more salient to eaters with simplified disclosures, people will change their eating behavior.

As a consequence of this new law, many product markets show a clear …

Strengthening The Evidence-Base Of Youth Nutrition Programs: A Three Part Approach, Rebecca Kyryliuk Jul 2021

Strengthening The Evidence-Base Of Youth Nutrition Programs: A Three Part Approach, Rebecca Kyryliuk

Theses and Dissertations

National dietary guidelines recommend that children’s diets consist of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, while limiting high-fat foods. Studies indicate, however, that children consume an abundance of sugar-sweetened, calorically dense foods and are lacking in fruit and vegetables, behaviors which significantly contribute to high rates of childhood obesity and subsequent, lifelong, detrimental health impacts. This dissertation provides new knowledge to strengthen the evidence-base and inform future best practices in youth nutrition programming so that more children will have the opportunity to meet national dietary recommendations. Three distinct investigations sought to 1) examine current and past youth dietary intake by comparing …

Different Prey Impact Metabolic Activity In Pitcher Plant Microbial Communities, Franco Nero, Leonora Bittleston (Mentor), Jessica Bernardin (Mentor) Jul 2021

Different Prey Impact Metabolic Activity In Pitcher Plant Microbial Communities, Franco Nero, Leonora Bittleston (Mentor), Jessica Bernardin (Mentor)

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

The carnivorous pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea is habitat to a diverse aquatic community of insects, mites, rotifers, fungi and bacteria, and captures different insects in order to gain nutrients, like nitrogen. In order for the nutrients to be absorbed by the plant, the associated bacterial communities help break down the prey, and thus they are closely tied to the plant’s growth. Many bacteria in this inquiline community produce enzymes such as chitinases, lipases, and phosphatases that help to deteriorate insects and their exoskeletons, so that the pitcher plants can fully access all the nutritional components of the prey. We hypothesized …

Comparing Apples To Oranges: What Is The Relative Nutritive Value Of Avian And Rodent Prey To An Apex Arctic Predator?, Sebastian Acevedo, David L. Anderson (Mentor), Michael T. Henderson, Travis L. Booms

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Effective conservation and management of raptors necessitates an understanding of their diet and feeding habits, especially in environments highly susceptible to anthropogenic change. The Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) is an apex avian predator of the Arctic tundra ecosystem that specializes on Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus), Rock Ptarmigan (L. muta), and Arctic ground squirrels (Urocitellus parryii). Despite being approximately equal in overall biomass, the relative nutritive value of ptarmigan and squirrels to breeding Gyrfalcons is unknown. Because Gyrfalcon habitat and dietary specialization make them particularly susceptible to changing prey distributions and abundances resulting from …

Exploring Provider Perspectives To Understand How To Best Inform Patients In South Dakota, Isabelle M. Lehman Jul 2021

Exploring Provider Perspectives To Understand How To Best Inform Patients In South Dakota, Isabelle M. Lehman

Honors Thesis

Patients in rural areas are more likely to experience worse health outcomes than patients in urban or suburban areas. The reasons for this discrepancy are multi-faceted, including inequities in resources and access, as well as differences in the environment. Rural providers understand what education and resources patients are missing as they often interact with patients in multiple contexts. We interviewed rural providers and performed an inductive thematic content analysis of the interviews to shed some insight into what information rural patients would need to be better healthcare advocates for themselves. Three themes emerged from the interview data: health education, access, …

Sometimes, When It Rains It Pours: How Does Flooding Alter Plant-Herbivore Relationships?, Lauren R. Urie, Erinn Dady, Esther N. Ngumbi Jul 2021

Sometimes, When It Rains It Pours: How Does Flooding Alter Plant-Herbivore Relationships?, Lauren R. Urie, Erinn Dady, Esther N. Ngumbi

PRECS student projects

Flooding, an under-studied abiotic stressor, creates hostile soil conditions, including hypoxia, which hinder the growth and development of plants. Plants respond to abiotic and biotic stressors. A common response is the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which modulate stress responses and mediate plant and insect interactions. Flooding causes significant losses in crops of agricultural and economic importance including tomato. Understanding how flooding impacts plant growth, plant chemistry, caterpillar performance and chemical mediated plant-herbivore interactions will create fundamental knowledge to an emerging challenge brought about by climate change and inform pest management decisions post flooding events. This study investigated how …
