The Effects Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Over Multiple Days On Shooting Performance In Elite Deaflympic Athletes: A Case Series, Nicholas Pudar, Milan Pantovic, Sheniz Mooney, Brach Poston
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method that has shown the ability to enhance motor learning in numerous studies. However, only a few of these studies have been conducted on elite level performers or in complex motor tasks that have been practiced extensively. Rifle shooting is a difficult motor task that has real-world implications in military, police, and sport settings. Although a few studies have investigated the influence of tDCS on shooting performance, these were all acute studies conducted on novice performers. The PURPOSE was to determine the effects of DLPFC-tDCS on motor learning over multiple days …

Consumers' Perception Of Food Containing Insect Protein Affected By Serving Condition And Questionnaire Protocol, Yupeng Gao
LSU Master's Theses
Edible insects are a new sustainable protein source compared to meat. Western consumers show aversion to the prospect of insects as food due to unfamiliarity, food neophobia, and negative emotions. This dissertation research explored consumers’ emotional perception of insect-based food products presented under different testing conditions and examined the influence of other people’s emotional expressions towards consumers’ purchase decisions. To identify and rate emotion intensities, tests were conducted using three presenting formats including text, image, and an actual product; all of which were applied for both cookies containing insects and without insects. In addition to these presenting formats, news of …

An Examination Of Coping Strategies And Intent To Leave Child Welfare During The Covid 19 Pandemic, Francie J. Julien‑Chinn, Colleen C. Katz, Eden Wall
Publications and Research
Child welfare work is inherently difficult, and child welfare agencies are known to experience high rates of turnover. We sought to expand the existing literature on intention to leave one’s child welfare agency and commitment to child welfare work through examining the coping mechanisms of frontline workers. Having and utilizing healthy coping mechanisms has proved beneficial to child welfare workers in previous research. In this paper, we examine specific coping mechanisms identifed in the Comprehensive Organizational Health Assessment and how they were associated with child welfare workers’ intent to leave their agency and their commitment to remain in the field …
Understanding Nutrition Education And Physical Activity Instruction In Rural Elementary Schools, Allison Harris, J. Dusti Linnell
Understanding Nutrition Education And Physical Activity Instruction In Rural Elementary Schools, Allison Harris, J. Dusti Linnell
Journal of Extension
We surveyed K-6 classroom teachers in four rural counties in Oregon to ascertain current nutrition and physical activity and/or physical education (PA/PE) instruction, barriers to teaching these subjects, and interest and need for professional development. Although most respondents reported teaching nutrition and PA/PE in their classrooms and appear to place high importance on teaching these subjects, reported delivery time was low. Extension can play an influential role in ensuring that students receive adequate nutrition and PA/PE instructional time by providing support to teachers through professional development, direct education in the classroom, and policy, systems and environmental change.

Excitotoxic Lesions Of The Perirhinal Cortex Leave Intact Rats’ Gustatory Sensory Preconditioning, Jasper Robinson, Peter M. Jones, Emma J. Whitt
Excitotoxic Lesions Of The Perirhinal Cortex Leave Intact Rats’ Gustatory Sensory Preconditioning, Jasper Robinson, Peter M. Jones, Emma J. Whitt
School of Psychology
We report findings from two sensory preconditioning experiments in which rats consumed two flavoured solutions, each with two gustatory components (AX and BY), composed of sweet, bitter, salt, and acid elements. After this pre-exposure, rats were conditioned to X by pairing with lithium chloride. Standard sensory preconditioning was observed: Consumption of flavour A was less than that of B. We found that sensory preconditioning was maintained when X was added to A and B. Both experiments included one group of rats with lesions of the perirhinal cortex, which did not influence sensory preconditioning. We discuss our findings in the light …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
The prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) among adults in the United States is low and decreases with age. Our objective was to identify specific age windows when the loss of CVH accelerates, to ascertain preventive opportunities for intervention. Data were pooled from 5 longitudinal cohorts (Project Heartbeat!, Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study, The Bogalusa Heart Study, Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults, Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project) from the United States and Finland from 1973 to 2012. Individuals with clinical CVH factors (i.e., body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose) measured from ages 8 …
Bark- And Wood-Infesting Insects (Coleoptera And Hymenoptera) And Associated Parasitoids Reared From Yellow Birch (Betula Alleghaniensis) In Ingham County, Michigan, Robert A. Haack
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Four species of bark- and wood-infesting borers (two Coleoptera and two Hymenoptera) and six parasitoid species (Hymenoptera) were reared from yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) one year after the trees were cut and left standing in a woodlot in Ingham County, Michigan in 1986–87. The borers were species of Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) and Xiphydriidae (Hymenoptera), and hymenopteran parasitoid species of Aulacidae, Braconidae, Chalcididae, and Pteromalidae. Xiphydriophagus meyerinckii (Ratzeburg) (Pteromalidae) is a new Michigan state record. For the borers, yellow birch is a new host record for the cerambycid Sternidius alpha (Say) and the xiphydriid Xiphydria tibialis Say. Seasonal emergence data …
Spiraling Flight Behavior May Integrate The Biological Compass Systems Of Migratory North American Monarch Butterflies, (Danaus Plexippus, L.), Matthew M. Douglas
Spiraling Flight Behavior May Integrate The Biological Compass Systems Of Migratory North American Monarch Butterflies, (Danaus Plexippus, L.), Matthew M. Douglas
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Here I report a unique spiraling flight and orientation behavior (comprising multiple clockwise and counterclockwise circles coupled by extended figure-8 patterns) observed in free-flying “late” migratory monarchs released under sunny ambient field conditions from a location with an unobstructed view of the sky. Following this spiraling flight, migrants continue to fly at very high altitudes until a final orientation and migratory flight direction is established with vanishing bearings statistically concentrated to the SW/W. These results provide preliminary evidence for the possible calibration and use of an inclination magnetic compass that can be used under all local free-flying field conditions. During …

Susceptibility, Preference, And Suitability Of Carpinus And Ostrya Taxa For Gypsy Moth Larvae (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), Fredric Miller, Susan Wiegrefe
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Twenty Carpinus taxa and three Ostrya taxa, growing in the tree breeding production area at The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, IL, were evaluated in laboratory bioassays for feeding susceptibility, preference, and suitability for gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar, L.) larvae. No-choice and multiple-choice laboratory feeding studies revealed that C. coreana, C. fargesii, C. laxiflora, and the hybrid C. caroliniana x C. orientalis were the least suitable for larval development and pupation, and were less preferred by gypsy moth larvae. Suitability rankings for gypsy moth larval development time were highly correlated with larval longevity, but the proportion of …

Influence Of Age On Decision Making By Ovipositing Pieris Rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae)., Brett Breitkreutz, Tracy Le Wagner, Rodrigo J. Mercader
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Due to its effect on the time available for host selection and learning, butterfly age is expected to alter the degree of host specificity and potentially niche breadth. Here, we use the small cabbage white, Pieris rapae L., to test the effect of age on ovipositional specificity and decision-making time. Specifically, we examined the ovipositional behavior of P. rapae 4, 8, and 12 days post-emergence. Females were recorded in thirty-minute trials using leaves of two hosts, mustard leaves, Brassica juncea, and collard greens, Brassica oleracea Acephala group, and the non-host common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris. Subsequently, we measured …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Climate change is an existential threat to all of humanity. Its impact on the children of Somalia provides insights into the severity of risks posed by climate change to current and future generations. Globally, there has been a continuous increase in mean annual temperatures since 1991 and scientists anticipate an increase of up to 4.3 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Concomitantly, Somalia has experienced a decrease in annual rainfall, resulting in recurrent droughts. According to the UN’s emergency aid coordination office, these droughts have grown in frequency and intensity over the past three decades, fueling increased frequency …

Poverty In A North American Context, Nathanael Snow, Benjamin Pettus
Poverty In A North American Context, Nathanael Snow, Benjamin Pettus
White Papers
From the Introduction
Understanding the impact of poverty can be aided by careful measurement. Statisticians and economists, both within the government and in the private sector, collect and analyze such statistics.
Disagreement about the interpretation of those figures can make it difficult for most people to know how they should respond to specific cases of poverty they encounter. For a meaningful discussion to take place, the existing understanding should be presented. This report summarizes the existing research on poverty and provides the interested reader with resources to continue learning about the topic. This report does not offer policy advice or …
