Preaching To Millennials: A Content Analysis Of Preachers' Communication As It Relates To Millennial Congregants, Matthew Joel Hastings Jan 2021

Preaching To Millennials: A Content Analysis Of Preachers' Communication As It Relates To Millennial Congregants, Matthew Joel Hastings

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The American church is facing a decline in attendance (Barna, 2014). This truth is especially prevalent in the millennial generation, the largest yet also the least religious American generation. Many of whom describe themselves as spiritual but not religious. The church has a unique opportunity through the weekly sermon that other organizations do not have. This opportunity provides the ability to verbally communicate in person with the entire organization at one time. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis study was to better understand how preachers who led the fastest growing churches in the Southern Baptist Convention used communication tactics …

The church in America is facing difficult times. The majority of churches are experiencing plateaued or declining attendance and a lack of spiritual vitality. While every church is unique in her own experience, there are some common factors that can lead to new life and vibrancy. The purpose of this study was to understand how to lead a specific church, Bridges Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to rediscover her missional purpose and discover vibrant growth, as individuals and as a corporate body. This study utilized the REVEAL for Churches Survey, an online survey that is both descriptive and prescriptive in …

Enhancing Glucose Metabolism Via Gluconeogenesis Is Therapeutic In A Zebrafish Model Of Dravet Syndrome, Rajeswari Banerji, Christopher Huynh, Francisco Figueroa, Matthew T Dinday, Scott C Baraban, Manisha Patel Jan 2021

Enhancing Glucose Metabolism Via Gluconeogenesis Is Therapeutic In A Zebrafish Model Of Dravet Syndrome, Rajeswari Banerji, Christopher Huynh, Francisco Figueroa, Matthew T Dinday, Scott C Baraban, Manisha Patel

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Energy-producing pathways are novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we focussed on correcting metabolic defects in a catastrophic paediatric epilepsy, Dravet syndrome which is caused by mutations in sodium channel NaV1.1 gene, SCN1A. We utilized a translatable zebrafish model of Dravet syndrome (scn1lab) which exhibits key characteristics of patients with Dravet syndrome and shows metabolic deficits accompanied by down-regulation of gluconeogenesis genes, pck1 and pck2. Using a metabolism-based small library screen, we identified compounds that increased gluconeogenesis via up-regulation of pck1 gene expression in scn1lab larvae. Treatment with PK11195, a pck1 activator …

Case Report: Dupilumab Successfully Controls Severe Eczema In A Child With Elevated Ige Levels And Recurrent Skin Infections, Tejas P Joshi, Sara Anvari, Meera R Gupta, Carla M Davis, Joud Hajjar

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The efficacy of dupilumab in pediatric patients with severe eczema presenting in the setting of elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels and recurrent bacterial skin infections is not well-understood. Here we present the case of a child with elevated IgE levels in whom dupilumab treatment led to remarkable control of his eczema and recurrent skin infections. We also review the use of dupilumab in other patients with molecularly proven cases of hyper IgE (HIGE) syndrome. Our case supports the notion that dupilumab may have a seminal application in treating severe eczema that occurs in the setting of elevated IgE levels and …

Effects Of Exposure To Video Games On Sexual Harassment, Chelsea Renee Washburn Jan 2021

Effects Of Exposure To Video Games On Sexual Harassment, Chelsea Renee Washburn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous research has suggested a positive relationship between video game play and negative outcomes, with the APA going so far as to publish a press release on the negative effects of violent media (APA, 2005, 2015a, 2015b; Anderson et al., 2010; Kepes et al., 2017). However, critics argue that these results are marred by publication bias and are overstated (Ferguson, 2007; Ferguson et al., 2020; Hilgard et al., 2017). The current study examined the relationship between the amount of time participants played video games and engaged in sexual and general harassment, and examined whether exposure to video game violence, hostile …

Recommender Systems In Higher Education: The Effectiveness Of Meta-Data Analysis In Predicting Academic Success, Michael J. Holmes Jan 2021

Recommender Systems In Higher Education: The Effectiveness Of Meta-Data Analysis In Predicting Academic Success, Michael J. Holmes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A recommender system is: “a software technology that proactively suggests items of interest to users based on their objective behavior or their explicitly stated preferences” (Pu et al., 2011, p. 157).

Whether we realize it or not, much of our lives are influenced by recommender systems. These systems may recommend where we eat, what movie we watch, what music we listen to, what products we buy, or even what news and social media content we see.

Recommender systems have been effectively utilized in higher education to recommend courses as well as customizing content within an online course to meet specific …

Exploring The Rhetorical Constitution Of A Safe Space For Women In Begum Rokeya And Frances Ellen Watkins Harper's Works, Rifat Rezowana Siddiqui

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis studies the literary texts of two womanist authors, Begum Rokeya and Frances E. W. Harper, who are from different cultural and geographical background. The thesis attempts to uncover how both authors envision feminist utopian safe space for women of their society. Being the representative from the global south, Rokeya elaborates on 19th century social customs such as purdah and zenana to demonstrate sex segregation in her society. Harper, on the other hand, illustrates the social crisis of slavery and racism through her work. Criticizing the social norms that create obstacles for racialized women, both the authors assert the …

Protein-Functionalized Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Hydrogels As Scaffolds For Monolayer Organoid Culture, Reid L Wilson, Ganesh Swaminathan, Khalil Ettayebi, Carolyn Bomidi, Xi-Lei Zeng, Sarah E Blutt, Mary K Estes, K Jane Grande-Allen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Stem cell-derived, organotypic in vitro models, known as organoids, have emerged as superior alternatives to traditional cell culture models due to their unparalleled ability to recreate complex physiological and pathophysiological processes. For this reason, they are attractive targets of tissue-engineering efforts, as constructs that include organoid technology would be expected to better simulate the many functions of the desired tissue or organ. While the 3D spheroidal architecture that is the default architecture of most organoid models may be preferred for some applications, 2D monolayer arrangements remain the preferred organization for many applications in tissue engineering. Therefore, in this work, we …

Do Online Courses Provide An Equal Educational Value Compared To In-Person Classroom Teaching? Evidence From U.S. Survey Data Using Quantile Regression, Manini Ojha, Mohammad Arshad Rahman Jan 2021

Do Online Courses Provide An Equal Educational Value Compared To In-Person Classroom Teaching? Evidence From U.S. Survey Data Using Quantile Regression, Manini Ojha, Mohammad Arshad Rahman

All Works

Education has traditionally been classroom-oriented with a gradual growth of online courses in recent times. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically accelerated the shift to online classes. Associated with this learning format is the question: what do people think about the educational value of an online course compared to a course taken in-person in a classroom? We address this question and present a Bayesian quantile analysis of public opinion using a nationally representative survey data from the United States. We find that previous participation in online courses and full-time employment status favor the educational value of online …

Antiquities And The Art Market: Forever Divided Or Will Ancient Art Find Its Place In An Evolving Contemporary Art Market?, Yvette Abiuso Jan 2021

Antiquities And The Art Market: Forever Divided Or Will Ancient Art Find Its Place In An Evolving Contemporary Art Market?, Yvette Abiuso

MA Theses

This paper argues that the market of ancient art will rise because of three positive trends: dealers, auctions, and galleries offering both antiquities and contemporary art together to potential collectors; the improving and added transparency of provenance research techniques; and millennial art collectors who have brought a new perspective to the art market. This study will explore if the combination of ancient art and contemporary art in gallery settings has increased sales. It will ask how much has “crossover collecting” affected the art market by exploring the techniques used by modern galleries to implement both genres in art fairs and …

Autobiographical Meaning Making Protects The Sense Of Self-Continuity Past Forced Migration, Christin Camia, Rida Zafar Jan 2021

Autobiographical Meaning Making Protects The Sense Of Self-Continuity Past Forced Migration, Christin Camia, Rida Zafar

All Works

Forced migration changes people’s lives and their sense of self-continuity fundamentally. One memory-based mechanism to protect the sense of self-continuity and psychological well-being is autobiographical meaning making, enabling individuals to explain change in personality and life by connecting personal experiences and other distant parts of life to the self and its development. Aiming to replicate and extend prior research, the current study investigated whether autobiographical meaning making has the potential to support the sense of self-continuity in refugees. We therefore collected life narratives from 31 refugees that were coded for autobiographical reasoning, selfevent connections, and global narrative coherence. In line …

Uncertainty Due To Infectious Diseases And Stock–Bond Correlation, Konstantinos Gkillas, Christoforos Konstantatos, Costas Siriopoulos Jan 2021

Uncertainty Due To Infectious Diseases And Stock–Bond Correlation, Konstantinos Gkillas, Christoforos Konstantatos, Costas Siriopoulos

All Works

We study the non-linear causal relation between uncertainty-due-to-infectious-diseases and stock–bond correlation. To this end, we use high-frequency 1-min data to compute daily realized measures of correlation and jumps, and then, we employ a nonlinear Granger causality test with the use of artificial neural networks so as to investigate the predictability of this type of uncertainty on realized stock–bond correlation and jumps. Our findings reveal that uncertainty-due-to-infectious-diseases has significant predictive value on the changes of the stock–bond relation.

All Works

Currently, online organizational resources and assets are potential targets of several types of attack, the most common being flooding attacks. We consider the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) as the most dangerous type of flooding attack that could target those resources. The DDoS attack consumes network available resources such as bandwidth, processing power, and memory, thereby limiting or withholding accessibility to users. The Flash Crowd (FC) is quite similar to the DDoS attack whereby many legitimate users concurrently access a particular service, the number of which results in the denial of service. Researchers have proposed many different models to eliminate …

The Impact Of Arabic Part Of Speech Tagging On Sentiment Analysis: A New Corpus And Deep Learning Approach, Abdul Munem Nerabie, Manar Alkhatib, Sujith Samuel Mathew, May El Barachi, Farhad Oroumchian Jan 2021

The Impact Of Arabic Part Of Speech Tagging On Sentiment Analysis: A New Corpus And Deep Learning Approach, Abdul Munem Nerabie, Manar Alkhatib, Sujith Samuel Mathew, May El Barachi, Farhad Oroumchian

All Works

Sentiment Analysis is achieved by using Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and finds wide applications in analyzing social media content to determine people’s opinions, attitudes, and emotions toward entities, individuals, issues, events, or topics. The accuracy of sentiment analysis depends on automatic Part-of-Speech (PoS) tagging which is required to label words according to grammatical categories. The challenge of analyzing the Arabic language has found considerable research interest, but now the challenge is amplified with the addition of social media dialects. While numerous morphological analyzers and PoS taggers were proposed for Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), we are now witnessing an increased …

The Dark Side Of Social Media Engagement: An Analysis Of User-Generated Content In Online Wildlife Trade Communities, Kim Feddema, Paul Harrigan, Shasha Wang

All Works

There is a growing academic interest on the dark side of engagement on social media and the role of user-generated content (UGC). The illicit trade of wildlife online is a major contributor to global species loss and, thus, strategies to reduce demand for wild species and consumer engagement in the market and are of paramount importance. We first conduct qualitative analyses on a large data set of UGC (n=14,729 words from 1060 comments from 12 Facebook groups) from a biodiversity hotspot, The Republic of Indonesia. We use automatic machine-learning lexical software to explore the discourse that occurs in comments of …

Artificial Intelligence And Trade, Anupam Chander Jan 2021

Artificial Intelligence And Trade, Anupam Chander

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Artificial Intelligence is already powering trade today. It is crossing borders, learning, making decisions, and operating cyber-physical systems. It underlies many of the services that are offered today – from customer service chatbots to customer relations software to business processes. The chapter considers AI regulation from the perspective of international trade law. It argues that foreign AI should be regulated by governments – indeed that AI must be ‘locally responsible’. The chapter refutes arguments that trade law should not apply to AI and shows how the WTO agreements might apply to AI using two hypothetical cases . The analysis reveals …

Sovereignty 2.0, Anupam Chander, Haochen Sun Jan 2021

Sovereignty 2.0, Anupam Chander, Haochen Sun

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Digital sovereignty—the exercise of control over the internet—is the ambition of the world’s leaders, from Australia to Zimbabwe, a bulwark against both foreign state and foreign corporation. Governments have resoundingly answered first-generation internet law questions of who if anyone should regulate the internet—they all will. We now confront second generation questions—not whether, but how to regulate the internet. We argue that digital sovereignty is simultaneously a necessary incident of democratic governance and democracy’s dreaded antagonist. As international law scholar Louis Henkin taught us, sovereignty can insulate a government’s worst ills from foreign intrusion. Assertions of digital sovereignty, in particular, …

Board Gender Diversity: A Path To Achieving Substantive Equality In The United States, Kimberly A. Houser, Jamillah Bowman Williams Jan 2021

Board Gender Diversity: A Path To Achieving Substantive Equality In The United States, Kimberly A. Houser, Jamillah Bowman Williams

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

While the European Union (EU) was founded on the concept of equality as a fundamental value in 1993, the United States was created at a time when women were considered legally inferior to men. This has had the lasting effect of preventing women in the United States from making inroads into positions of power. While legislated board gender diversity (BGD) mandates have been instituted in some EU countries, the United States has been loath to take that route, relying instead on the goodwill of corporate boards, with little progress. On September 30, 2018, however, California enacted a law that has …

The Corruption Of Copyright And Returning It To Its Original Purposes, Michelle M. Wu Jan 2021

The Corruption Of Copyright And Returning It To Its Original Purposes, Michelle M. Wu

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since its inception, Copyright has had two purposes: the private interest of the author in being paid for her work and the public interest served by the dissemination of these works. Within the last two decades, though, some industries have systematically undermined both of those interests, redirecting the benefits of copyright towards themselves instead of the intended beneficiaries. This paper looks at the book, music, and entertainment industries, examines how copyright has been used to suppress the uses it was intended to foster, and explores ongoing and proposed avenues for course correction.

Could Private Legislation Be The First Key To Unlocking The Nation’S Information Resources In The Battle Against Misinformation?, Michelle M. Wu Jan 2021

Could Private Legislation Be The First Key To Unlocking The Nation’S Information Resources In The Battle Against Misinformation?, Michelle M. Wu

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Unfiltered, unverified information flows freely on the web and is much more easily found and used than reliable sources. There are logical reasons for this, as quality, reliable information often costs both time and money to investigate, verify, and publish. However, that type of investment only justifies the charging for the information at the outset, not the cabining of it once it is available and has been purchased. Where public libraries have acquired content, they should be allowed to maximize its use in society within the bounds of copyright. Such use is within the spirit of copyright and its hope …

Restoring The Balance Of Copyright: Antitrust, Misuse, And Other Possible Paths To Challenge Inequitable Licensing Practices, Michelle M. Wu

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Libraries’ purposes of ensuring access to and preservation of information have been compromised as licensing increasingly replaces ownership. This article outlines various novel legal strategies that libraries could use to restore copyright’s intended balance, including antitrust, preemption, misuse, and unconscionability.

Storming Zuckerberg’S Castle, Anupam Chander Jan 2021

Storming Zuckerberg’S Castle, Anupam Chander

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A company’s server is its castle, Richard Epstein once declared. Because of this, anyone sending an email to that server needs permission to enter. Within its own logic, this seems incontrovertible, but it depends on a few logical steps worth unpacking. It begins with the premise that a man’s home is his castle. (The masculine pronoun in the early formulation seems relevant.) Let us accept that premise for the purpose of argument. Combining this premise with the investiture of legal personhood on a corporation, we might then deduce that a company’s home must be its castle. Finally, combining that …

Counterterrorism 2.0, Deborah Pearlstein Jan 2021

Counterterrorism 2.0, Deborah Pearlstein

Articles

Are there any lessons to be gleaned for combatting the rising threat of white nationalist terrorism today from the U.S. response to the attacks of 9/11 twenty years on? This symposium reflection suggests that among the most important lessons may be in avoiding the conceptually defining characteristics of the early U.S. response in 2001. Detainee torture and abuse, the embrace of trial by newly formed military commission, and other misguided policies and practices whose effects are still felt today were set in motion in the first few weeks after the attacks, driven by the instinct to do something, bolstered by …

From Lex Informatica To The Control Revolution, Julie E. Cohen Jan 2021

From Lex Informatica To The Control Revolution, Julie E. Cohen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Legal scholarship on the encounter between networked digital technologies and law has focused principally on how legal and policy processes should respond to new technological developments and has spent much less time considering what that encounter might signify for the shape of legal institutions themselves. This essay focuses on the latter question. Within fields like technology studies, labor history, and economic sociology, there is a well-developed tradition of studying the ways that new information technologies and the “control revolution” they enabled—in brief, a quantum leap in the capacity for highly granular oversight and management—have elicited long-term, enduring changes in the …
